Obscure Pet Shop Boys @ Electric Ballroom Camden…

Last Friday night, Stuart and I went to see the Pet Shop Boys perform their Obscure show. OMG.

B-sides, album tracks and fan favourites. They played some of my favourite ever Pet Shop Boys tracks; To Face the Truth, King’s Cross, The Way It Used to Be, Your Funny Uncle, Later Tonight (to name but a few). I was in Heaven.

The crowd sang every word to every song.

It was a fabulous show. But also a meaningful one.

The Obscure shows aren’t meant to be judged by the same criteria as a standard Pet Shop Boys concert. They’re the deliberate antithesis of the long‑running Dreamworld tour, which has been delivering the hits, brilliantly around the world since 2022.

Obscure is something else entirely: a curated deep‑dive for the people who’ve lived with these songs for decades.

For many of us, these tracks aren’t “obscure” at all. They’re the soundtrack to very specific moments in our lives. We remember exactly where we were when we first heard them. Who we were with. How we felt. We fell in love to these songs in our bedrooms, listening on cheap hi‑fis and cassettes made by people we cared about, some of whom aren’t here anymore. We revised for exams to them. We listened to them on Walkmans at bus stops in the rain. We listened at funerals to them, we danced at weddings to them, skipped to the pub humming them and skipped home singing them even louder.

These songs taught us about running away, about revolution, about dignity, about being yourself with a bit of class.

So when the Boys choose to build a show around this part of their catalogue, it isn’t a downgrade... it’s a gift. It’s a chance to hear the emotional architecture of their career performed with intention, in a venue small enough to feel personal.

If anything, the only “obscure” thing is the idea that a band with a forty‑year legacy should only be measured by how loudly a crowd reacts to their biggest singles.

For the fans who’ve carried these songs through every chapter of their lives, Obscure made perfect sense.

Lisa and I had a lovely ferry trip and walk along the coast yesterday. We were winding our way towards Christ the King. It’s pretty damn high but offered amazing views of the city and the bridge.

Then we met up with the gaygooners to watch the football and have a beer.

Great to see so many gaygooners before (and at) the match yesterday.

There are smash & grabs, & then there is whatever this was. Arsenal spent much of evening politely passing the ball around, before Kai Havertz wandered in late & helped himself to a winner.

A lively start saw David Raya reminding everyone he has hands, tipping one onto bar, while woodwork at both ends took more punishment than referee in north London derby.

After that, the game settled into gentle hum of Arsenal possession with all menace of a damp Tuesday evening.

Sporting had their moments, Arsenal had the ball much of the time, & neither seemed especially keen to do anything decisive with it. Martin Ødegaard tried, limped, & departed stage left, which felt ominous.

Enter Havertz. Late, quiet, & devastatingly effective. Gabriel Martinelli did the hard work, beat a couple, squared it, & Havertz finished it.

It was not pretty. It was not convincing. It was, however, extremely useful.

Last Friday night with Stuart went to see A Doll’s House @ Almeida Theatre in London’s glitzy Islington.

Ibsen’s feminist play via Anya Reiss gets a sleek modern polish; bankers, mobile phones, and threesomes.

Romola Garai burns bright in her brittle dollhouse of secrets, while director Joe Hill-Gibbons keeps the screws turning.

Chic, chilly, quietly savage. But not quite stellar.

Great to see so many gaygooners before (and at) the match yesterday. But it was a bad day at the office.

Shea Charles scored an 85th-minute winner to dump the Gunners out of the competition after substitute Viktor Gyokeres had levelled following Ross Stewart's first-half opener.

Sure, being knocked out of the FA Cup can be seen as a mixed blessing. It gives us the opportunity to concentrate on bigger competitions - the Premiership and the Champions League. Put momentum is a big thing in football and being booted out of two domestic cup competitions in as many weeks is a blow.

As the mighty Steps once sung, some things are better best forgotten.

Last night Stuart & I went to see Les Liaisons Dangereuses at Lyttelton Theatre on London’s glitzy South Bank.

Marianne Elliott directs Christopher Hampton’s take on Laclos into a long but juicy duel of love, lies, and social warfare.

Lesley Manville prowls, Aidan Turner smoulders. Slick, wicked fun.

Earlier today Stuart and I took a rather super Race Across The World style “let’s get up & see where we can get to” day trip.

Angus had suggested Corinth so we looked where it was on the map and off we dashed.

Tubes, trains, quite a bit of running, and a crazy high-speed taxi drive later (blowing the budget) it turned into a fabulous day out featuring a 19th-century shipping channel, some impressive archaeological ruins, & a commanding 575-metre-high mountain fortress.

The frighteningly deep Corinth Canal slices Greece like an overconfident cheese wire. Nero started it. The French finished it.

Ancient Corinth serves up its columns aplenty; Apollo still has seven marble ones left his at his temple, and St Paul submitted his as a letter to the Corinthians.

And to finish the day off we climbed a mountain. Yes, the Acrocorinth has great views but it’s a lung-busting climb.

History, drama, and mild exhaustion.

We deserved a beer.

First things first: Thessaloniki is very welcoming. Right on the Aegean coast, with big food and even bigger Greek smiles.

There are some beautifully quaint corners to explore, and we stumbled across some genuinely standout restaurants. Special shoutout to Kanoula.

It’s also a perfect base for exploring the wider Macedonian region.

(Though… the less said about our stay at Holiday Inn Thessaloniki the better. 100 students running wild at 3am is… well, not quite the tranquil getaway Stuart & I had in mind 😅)

Meteora Monasteries…

Stuart and I visited some very tall rocks yesterday to see the Meteora monasteries. These are six Eastern Orthodox glorious buildings perched on massive sandstone pillars like God left his lego out. Apparently 14th century monks used ladders, pulleys and nets to get up there which sounds like a health and safety nightmare even for the devout.

Now it is a UNESCO site full of frescoes and artifacts.

Breathtaking views.

Athens: The Changing of the Guard…

Athens does pageantry with a straight face and excellent calves. The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is hourly theatre in pleats, pom poms, and a kick that suggests Pilates with a side of nationalism.

Sunday at 11am adds a band and extra drama.

Stuart and I were entirely charmed.

Yesterday Stuart & I wandered around Athens on our last day here. But we kept seeking out one thing.

Yes, we walked through the Koukaki with its little shops & bars, shopped in Plaka for souvenirs & climbed up Filopappou Hill. But we were drawn again and again back to the wonderful Parthenon. It really is that magnetic.

Yesterday Stuart and I went to the ancient historic site of Delphi; place of the Oracle and her dodgy prophecies.

So when Zeus sent two eagles to find the centre of the world they landed at Delphi and honestly fair enough. His son Apollo then moved in and started dishing out advice.

For the next 1000 years the Oracle (local women aided by the hallucinogenic gases being emitted from the rocks under the site) did the same - for a price.

The ruins are now quietly iconic, or so the guide loudly informed. The museum adds a bronze charioteer for a bit of drama.

The town of Arachova nearby does the lunch and the mountain-perching charm.

Athens Acropolis…

Yesterday Stuart & I wandered through 2500 years of history & climbed the Acropolis of Athens with its sweeping views across the city & out toward the Aegean Sea.

It is dominated by the Parthenon, the crowning monument dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron. A proper wow moment.

We also explored the Propylaea, Erechtheion, Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, & Temple of Athena Nike.

We wrapped up our culture vulture day at the Acropolis Museum & wander through the lovely old world Plaka.

Great fun.

Bad day at Wembley. Woeful performances all round. I watched it in an Athens sports bar. It was no less painful.

Biggest regret? Manager Mikel Arteta & his decision to play keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga rather than David Raya. Kepa had a howler.

If you’re trying to win a trophy, why wouldn't you play your number one keeper to give yourself the best possible chance?
