Cup ties in small grounds are meant to be uncomfortable. But we had a proper scare.

Mansfield pressed, shot often and generally behaved like a team on a mission.

Thankfully Noni Madueke curled in Arsenal’s opener before the break, then Mansfield nicked one after a youthful wobble, but Eberechi Eze arrived off the bench to restore order with a thunderbolt. ⚡️

Teenagers impressed, nerves jangled, quarter finals secured, job done.

Last night Elliot and I went to see Tell Me Straight at Park Theatre in London’s glitzy Finsbury Park.

A brisk two hander from @_paulbradshaw and @buckbraithwaite with @jadeanouka on voice duty. Precious few laughs and the characters feel inconsistent and the central dilemmas never quite earned. And still the mystery remains. Why are straight men falling at his feet? We were flummoxed.

An Evening With David Byrne @ Eventim Apollo…

Last night Steven went to see An Evening With David Byrne at Eventim Apollo in London’s glitzy Hammersmith.

David Byrne arrives dressed entirely in blue and proceeds to turn a bare stage into a nervy art pop revival meeting. No amps cluttering the view, no rock star posturing, just Byrne and a troupe who move like a very stylish civic parade. At seventy three he has more twitch than most men half his age and considerably better tailoring.

He opens with Heaven and builds the night brick by existential brick. Ray Suen glides between violin and guitar with quiet precision, Kely Pinheiro anchors the whole enterprise with a bass line that could shift tectonic plates, and Daniel Mintseris straps on a synthesiser like he is about to join a particularly intellectual marching band. They do not so much play as orbit one another.

The screens whirl from department store to cornfield to churning sea. Punk, we are told, is now about kindness. The world burns politely behind them. On My Apartment Is My Friend Byrne offers a guided tour of loneliness in New York and somehow makes it danceable. T Shirt delivers slogans that land somewhere between protest placard and knowing wink. The crowd cheers. Of course they do.

The Talking Heads classics arrive like old friends who still fit into their good suit. This Must Be the Place gets everyone upright. Life During Wartime feels less like nostalgia and more like a news bulletin. By the time Burning Down the House detonates as the encore, the American dream has been lightly toasted.

It is glitzy Hammersmith outside, apocalypse chic inside, and five stars without hesitation.

Well, that was stressful. But fun.

Saliba opened proceedings with the air of a man who had read the script. Arsenal then generously scored all three goals, which is inclusive if nothing else. Poor Hincapié will want that one back.

Timber rose from a corner and nodded home the winner. Routine now. That was our ninth league winner from a corner this season. Set pieces are less a tactic and more a lifestyle choice.

And speaking of nines, Pedro Neto collected Chelsea’s ninth red card of the campaign because symmetry matters. And Chelsea don’t. Same old Chelsea, always cheating.

The result restores a five point cushion over Pep Guardiola and his lot.

Control, chaos, corner, repeat.

Yesterday Darren and I went to see Blondie in Camera 1978 at Barbican Music Library in London’s glitzy Barbican Centre.

Martyn Goddard’s lens turns 1978 into a time machine with better cheekbones. Fifty shots of Blondie at full voltage, Debbie Harry smouldering, the band mid-detonation. Posters, album art, even the cameras get their own moment. Rock history, beautifully framed and faintly feral.

I’m heading to Welwyn North today. To see my mum. A semi-regular trip by train. 🚂

My Oyster 60+ gets me to Ally Pally for ‘free’. So as usual I planning on buying a separate extension ticket for the rest of the journey - a return train ticket from Ally Pally station to Welwyn North. The usual £9-50 return. 💷

Except…. Making the same journey a couple of weeks ago, an inspector got on my train and checked my ticket. She pointed out I’d made a mistake. Shit! What? Yikes! 😱

Well, it turns out the error had actually been in their favour. The Oyster 60+ card actually extends as far north as Hadley Wood - four stops up the line from Ally Pally so nearer Welwyn North. 👍

And the price of a return ticket from Hadley Wood to Welwyn North? £6-50 return! D’oh! I’ve been over-paying by £3 every time I’ve been to visit my mum! 🫣

The thrill of discovering you can do something slightly cheaper in your sixties is unmatched. 😂

Two nil up against the team propping up the table and somehow we decided to slam on the brakes. Wolves, previously allergic to points, left with one. We left with existential questions.

It had the aroma of a defeat. Two points politely placed in the recycling. Meanwhile Manchester City are hovering with the enthusiasm of a tax inspector.

The title charge is not yet a sprint but you can hear the starting pistol being polished. Next stop Spurs away. Joy.

Last Saturday afternoon with Stuart went to see Turner and Constable at Tate Britain in London’s glitzy Pimlico.

The two peerless landscape performers, JMW Turner and John Constable, had a rivalry that crackled like a Regency diss track.

Turner swirls in with storm and swagger with his own poetry. Constable plants his boots in Suffolk mud and serves unblinking realism.

Different styles, same genius. Both outstanding.

Arsenal 4 - 0 Wigan…

Lovely to go to the game last night with my sister Joanna. Her first match. As it turns out, she’s a bit of a lucky charm.

Arsenal treated the FA Cup like a speed awareness course. Four goals in half an hour and Wigan were still looking for their parking pass. 😁

Eberechi Eze split the pitch open for Noni Madueke, then did it again for Gabriel Martinelli. Jack Hunt added a souvenir own goal after Bukayo Saka and Madueke tied him in knots. Gabriel Jesus completed the opening act with a cheeky chip.

Saka turned up late, played in midfield and ran the show anyway. Kepa Arrizabalaga saved the only serious Wigan effort, largely out of politeness.

Fifth round reached. First time since 2020. Funny how silverware memories return.
