Yahoo Pipes... In fact, it's so remarkable, it's disruptive. It seems using Yahoo Pipes I can do everything! This is not a joke. Today I tell you about the five most useful pipes:

New Yahoo Pipes amazing pipes appear daily. Increasing average Y-Benders pipes produced increasingly difficult and interesting. Four pipes below were created literally day ago. Let us consider each pipe details.

First pipe: Good MP3 Search

I tried to find your favorite songs from childhood... Found! This is a wonderful, I immediately fell in love with this service. Sometimes the Good MP3 Search (GMS?) shows album covers and track price. But for the future, I recommend that the author to increase the number of sources. At least Amazon MP3 and iTunes not deterred.

Second pipe: Price watcher

I used this pipe to find FSBO. Overall, it is even a good idea, although the relevance could be better.

Look at the picture. Very complex pipe, which consists of 12 modules, some of which are themselves pipes. System very fine! I, to the surprise, have found even the credit for iPhone :-)

Google blocks Yahoo's Pipes

The two leading search engines have reached a technical impasse over Google's news service and Yahoo's pipes product.

Pipes is a highly regarded product from Yahoo's Brickhouse team. Users are able to collect data from various sources around the internet, manipulate it, filter it, sort it and then deliver it in another format. For example, with Yahoo Pipes a brand team could monitor news aggregators and blog search engines around the web for mentions of their brand and then deliver this research in one single RSS feed. That's easy to read and easy to monitor.

In the past Google has been used by viruses to query the web looking for forum sites with known vulnerabilities or email addresses. Google's defence to this sort of virus attack is to block automated queries to the search engine and also to Google News.

Google's anti-automated query defense is now blocking the automated queries from Yahoo Pipes. Many of the published pipes in Yahoo's system are now showing as empty and blocked as Google News was an incredibly popular source of information.

Yahoo's Pipes requests for Google News URLs are being forwarded to Google's blocking page. Google is treating Pipes as a virus or other unwanted computer request.

Pipes and Netscape: Historyscape for Geeks

Following Alan’s experiment with Yahoo! Pipes I thought I’d have a quick play and see if anything interesting could be done with it. What I’ve done is aggregate Netscape feeds to produce something like an historical / archaeological version of Digg. You can do this with Pligg, but the advantage of hooking into Netscape’s API is that you already have people voting without having to promote or maintain the scripts. The headlines should be quite interesting from the start.

The wonderful thing about Netscape is that each tag has its own feed, so you can subscribe to feeds for history stories and archaeology stories. However if you’re interested in history AND archaeology then I can’t see a way to combine the stories into one useful feed on site - hence Pipes.

Initially Pipes looks nothing special. You can import feeds and mix them, but you can do the same with things like Feedjumbler, and a lot more easily too. Where Pipes gets more interesting is that it’s a fairly easy way to start messing around in a more complex way with feeds. In this case the Netscape feeds have a votecount attribute. Mix the feeds together and it’s very easy to order them by votecount descending, meaning that you have the most popular stories at the top of the feed. Regex means I can chop out bits of the description I don’t want, like the links to the channel and tags, which look confusing. Access your mashup while iPhone

The Pipes team spent a hectic 24 hours as part of the recent internal Y! hack day (video coming soon) creating an iPhone interface for Pipes. We thought it was so useful we wanted to get it out as soon as possible.

Now everyone can access their mash-ups while mobile by going to iphone.pipes.yahoo.com. In addition to running any of your pipes and getting the output in a suitably styled interface, one of the coolest parts of our hack was integrating Pipes with the built-in iPhone mapping application. You can put any of your geo Pipe results on the iPhone just by pressing the “Map” button.
