CHILI CHECK – Kay Fenrich, standing far left, representing the Owasso Sertoma Club and ChiliJohn Fenrich, chairman of the Owasso Harvest Festival Chili Cook-Off presented a giant check for $1,800 recently to members of the Owasso High School FFA chapter at a livestock exhibit at the school.

The funds were raised at the Chili Cook-Off through the sale of chili tasting kits. More than 5,000 people attended the event at Centennial Park last October.

The 2012 Owasso Harvest Festival Chili Cook-Off is scheduled to be on Saturday, Oct. 27^th.

Upcoming events for the FFA chapter include more livestock shows and the speech season for all members involved in public speaking.

Trails End BBQ will be hosting a fundraiser for this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Owasso/Collinsville on this Saturday, February 11, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

A special Valentine's Dinner will be served for the evening’s event. The dinner will include a salad, baked potato, steak, drink, and dessert for $39.95 per couple. Relay Team members from Renaissance Dental will be bussing tables that evening and 10% of the proceeds will go to Relay For Life for Owasso/Collinsville, along with any tips.

Cornerstone Church to Host Benefit Spaghetti Dinner for Local Woman Battling Cancer

Jamie Francis Thurman has been fighting cancer since 2008 and has recently received news that the cancer has spread to her liver. Jamie lives in Claremore with her husband Steve and their two children, Taylor and Eli.

The family has faced addition trials with a tragic house fire in November 2010. Please join us in celebrating Jamie's life and future by offering support to help her and family through this trying time in their lives.

The event will be held on February 18th from 6-8pm at Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church, located at 7700 North Whirlpool Drive in Sperry. The evening will include a spaghetti dinner, music and an auction.

OTEMS Ambulance District to Hold Second Public Forum

The OTEMS ambulance district has scheduled its second public forum from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Oologah Community Building to discuss the status of the Seven Ready program. The voluntary ambulance program currently offered to OTEMS district residents through Rural Water District No. 4 or Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative lets patrons avoid out-of-pocket expenses for medically-necessary ambulance runs by paying a small monthly fee on their utility bill.

Because the ambulance district covers almost 200 square miles, no one utility provides billing services to all OTEMS patrons. The ambulance district is exploring arrangements with two other utilities to provide almost 100 percent availability. The program offered through Verdigris Valley Electric Cooperative uses an opt-out system to allow members to express their interest in whether to participate and have a $7 fee added to their monthly power bills. Additional information about the Seven Ready program offered through VVEC is available by calling the OTEMS office at 918-443-2350. To participate through RWD #4, patrons must get and fill out a form through the water district office. They can call the water district at 918-443-2542 for additional information or to get a form mailed or faxed to them.

Enrollment in Seven Ready will begin once the patron files a completed and signed form with the water district office. The Seven Ready name was coined because the program will bring financial stability to the OTEMS ambulance service while protecting patrons from ambulance bills that, even with insurance, can cost a patient hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket for a single call. Local Family Holding "SWEET" Fundraiser to Save Family Home

A local couple who say they believe they have been called to provide a stable and loving home for their three grandchildren have recently gained custody of the children, but have incurred significant expenses in the process. In the past 8 months the couple has incurred legal fees, higher household costs, and the cost of replacing a vehicle. Now the mortgage company is foreclosing on the house the couple shares with their grandchildren. They have until February 21st to catch up on the note with the mortgage company.

The couple is working to repair the situation by selling the wife's legendary carrot cakes, which she has been offered $50 for in the past. The couple has decided to sell 400 carrot cakes for $30 each. Christ Church Episcopal, has offered the use of their commercial kitchen to bake the cakes. Sam’s Wholesale Club, at 71st and Mingo, is providing the flour and sugar.

The family says that the best way to help is to order a cake or two, share this message with others, or take orders and deliver cakes to your family and friends. The cakes are ideal for birthday parties, Super-Bowl parties, Valentines Day, etc.

TULSA, Okla. – Platinum-selling country recording artist Billy Currington is set to perform at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa on April 12.

Currington, who recently celebrated his fourth consecutive No. 1 single with “Let Me Down Easy,” spent most of 2011 with Kenny Chesney’s Goin’ Coastal tour but will bring his own high-energy show to The Joint.

His performance will feature his No. 1 hits “People Are Crazy,” “That’s How Country Boys Roll,” “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right,” “Good Directions” and “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer.”

Owasso neighborhood honors fallen soldier

On Saturday, January 28, 2012. residents in the Crescent Ridge subdivision, along with Owasso and Collinsville officials, renamed a portion of E.123rd Street North after Army Spc. Christopher Horton.

Spc.Horton, was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard's 45th Brigade Combat team who died in Afghanistan Sept. 9.

A street sign at the corner of 112th East Avenue and 123rd Street North , as well as a plaque, located below the sign were dedicated to Spc. Horton.

At the ceremony, Owasso Mayor Doug Bonebrake proclaimed Saturday, January 28 as "Christopher Horton Day" in the city.

Arrest made in fatal hit and run

Sergeant Nick Boatman, with the Owasso Police Department tells Owassoisms this evening that police have arrested Jedediah Perky, the suspect in a fatal Hit and Run Collision that occurred near 126^th St N and Garnett Road in Owasso on January 15^th.

The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office approved a warrant for charges sought by Owasso Police for the crime, and Detectives with the Owasso Police provided Perky the opportunity to turn himself in to them, which he did shortly after 3:30PM today.

Perky is being transferred to the David L. Moss - Tulsa County Jail under an Arrest Warrant for Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Hit and Run - Auto Pedestrian Collision.

Owasso Police Investigators would again like to thank the public for the numerous tips received and continued support

Erin Lee, is 31 years old, married and has a 5 year old child.

Erin has an acoustic neuroma tumor. It is located at the connection where her ear canal connects to her brain. The tumor is large and surgery is a must. She will loose permanent hearing in her right ear as well as the nerve controlling her balance, in turn she will need to re-learn to sit, stand, and walk. 3-5 month recovery.

Coldwell banker is doing a community garage sale and all proceeds will go to help the family with medical and living expenses. Within the garage sale we will have a bake sale, raffle baskets off and also sell concessions.

The sale will be held Feb. 16, 17, & 18. The space next door to Coldwell Banker has been generously donated so it will be an inside sale. The space is in the Tyann Plaza shopping center ( the now closed Essentials Furniture store.)

We are asking for garage sale items to be donated NOW. The Coldwell Banker office has keys to the space next door, so anyone donating can stop by the Coldwell Banker office and we will be happy to open up the doors for drop off. Dr. Clark Ogilvie featured speaker for the February Monthly Chamber Luncheon

Dr. Clark Ogilvie will be the featured speaker for the February Monthly Luncheon, Wednesday February 1, 2012.

Dr. Ogilvie was named the Superintendent of Owasso Schools in July of 2004. He is a 30+ year veteran of Oklahoma public education and holds three degrees from Oklahoma State University. He is a Tulsa native and has served in several Tulsa County school districts as a teacher and administrator.

He comes from a family of educators as his father was a long time Oklahoma superintendent in several school districts and his mother was a teacher as well.

He was named as Oklahoma Association of School Administrators District #5 Administrator of the Year for Northeastern Oklahoma in 2005 and currently serves as the District #5 OASA Representative for Northeastern Oklahoma. He is the Past President of the Urban/Suburban Schools Association and the Tulsa County Superintendents Association.

One of Dr. Ogilvie's areas of expertise is "Strategic Planning." He directed the creation of the Owasso School District's six (6) year strategic plan that was officially christened "The Owasso Way" by a committee of over 100 staff and patrons. This document serves as the roadmap for the future of Owasso Public Schools.

He believes his greatest accomplishments to date have been leading the district to over 100 million dollars in bond issues and infrastructure improvements and Owasso's continued rise in academic performance.

Dr. Ogilvie and his wife Phyllis have been married for 36 years.

Studies show that couples who receive at least 4 hours of pre-marital counseling have a much lower rate of divorce, and conversely, a much higher rate of happiness.

Owasso Community Resources Takes Another Step in Helping Families in our Community: JobLink, Connecting You with Your Future is Now Open

Residents in the Owasso area now have a local resource to turn to for employment assistance. The new job center opened early January and is available to job seekers. "We are looking forward to bringing the opportunity for individuals to receive assistance in finding jobs and getting hired" said Owasso Community Resources Director, Nadia Guevara. Volunteers and staff are available to assists clients with their individual needs.

JobLink is located at on 109 Birch, Suite 114 and is open during OCR regular hours (Monday-Wednesday 9am to 2pm and Thursday 1pm to 6pm). JobLink accepts drop-in clients, though not all services are offered every day. Individuals interested in one-on-one assistance can visit the job center Monday 9am to 12pm, Tuesday 11am to 2pm, and Thursday 3pm to 6pm, other hours are available by appointment only.

The new job center consists of a job board with current job postings, area job placement agencies and job search website. JobLink has available four computer workstations with unlimited internet access to complete online job applications and conduct job searches. Also available are resources for interview preparation, tips on writing resumes and more. Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals with experience in Human Resources.

Doobie Brothers Return to Tulsa

The Doobie Brothers perform at the grand opening of The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa on Sept. 30, 2010. The band returns to The Joint on March 29.

TULSA, Okla. – When The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa opened on Sept. 30, 2010, it was California classic rockers the Doobie Brothers that broke in the sound system to a sold-out crowd.

Now a year-and-a-half later, the Doobie Brothers return to The Joint on March 29. Tickets start at $50 and go on sale Feb. 16.

“There was a lot of fanfare surrounding the opening night of The Joint, and the Doobie Brothers did an outstanding job helping us open the venue,” said Danny Finnerty, entertainment director for Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa. “We’re excited to bring them back so they can once again share a collection of hits that continues to resonate with listeners.”

The Doobie Brothers have sold more than 30 million albums and charted 29 singles in the United States over nearly four decades. The band’s No. 1 hits include “Black Water” and “What a Fool Believes.” Other popular singles include “Listen to the Music,” “Jesus is Just Alright,” “Long Train Runnin’,” “Takin’ It to the Streets” and “China Grove.”

Overnight Burglary

Thieves broke in to Robertson Tire in Owasso Wednesday morning, stealing more than $150,000 in tools, a safe a car and more.

The theives broke the front garage door glass to gain entry to the building.

The car that was stolen from Robertson is a gold colored four-door 1994 Oldsmobile with Oklahoma license plate of 272-BHY.
