In many countries, a sworn translator has been authorised by the government of the country in question to translate and notarise a document. A document provided by a sworn translator is an official document in its own right. The translation will be provided with a stamped declaration which is written in the relevant language, as well as English.

The UK does not have sworn translators

In the common law system in the UK, we do not have the “sworn translator” that exists in civil law countries. Even so, translations have to be “sworn” or certified for various purposes. Certifying or swearing has no bearing on the quality of a translation, but serves to identify the translator and his or her qualifications so that he or she is accountable. When a translation is sworn before a notary, the notary does not verify the quality of the translation, but merely satisfies himself or herself as to the translator’s identity.

When is a certified document translation required?

There are many occassions when it is necessary to provide a certified translation of a document. Universities, government bodies, professional organisations and courts frequently require certified translations. You will usually be told by the requesting body that a document translation requires certification, though it is worthwhile checking with the organisation if you are unsure if certification is required.

Are certified translations legal documents?

A certified translation creates a legal record. With a certified translation, along with your translated documents you’ll also receive a written statement from a certified translator that the translated version is a true and accurate version of your original. The front page of your translation is sealed to reduce the possibility of fraud.

What is the difference between a certified translation and a sworn translation?

About the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)

The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) is a professional association that assesses the quality of its members, maintains a list of members with suitable language skills and technical expertise, and can hold its members to account in the event of complaints.

The ITI was founded in 1986 as the only independent professional association of practising translators and interpreters in the United Kingdom. It is now one of the primary sources of information on translation and interpreting services to government, industry, the media and the general public. With its aim of promoting the highest standards in translation and interpreting, the ITI offers guidance and advice not only to those who offer language services but also to their customers.

ITI members are required to abide by a Code of Professional Conduct.
