Most cats that don’t use kitty litter trays will develop the habit of doing their business in garden where they can cover their business up afterwards. However not all cats do this or sometimes they use a dirt area but the dirt is just too hard/rocky and they are not able to cover up afterwards. After a while this can become very annoying, frustrating and smelly – particularly when it’s not your cat that’s messing in your yard.

Now I know some people will say they have to do it somewhere, just put up with it, but it can be a   problem after a while, particularly when it’s right where you walk or beneath the kitchen window.

This article outlines a few suggestions for how to stop cats leaving their business in your yard.       Remember all cats are different and all situations are different, so what works for one household may not work for another. I suggest trying whichever method seems easiest for you and if that does not work, just keep working through the list until you find something that does.

1. If it’s your own cat, ensure it has access to a kitty litter tray that is cleared regularly, preferably daily. Oxyfresh deodorizer helps to eliminates the odor and deodorize the surrounding kitty litter area.
2. If you know someone who owns a cat, speak with them politely and ask if they can ensure their cat has access to a clean kitty litter tray.
3. Where possible, try planting shrubs or placing pot plants or some other item in the area where the cat is using as its toilet (eg. I have an area where I keep my rubbish bins. Every week, on the night the bins out, the neighbour’s cat leaves a ‘present’ there for me. I now keep some large pot plants in that area and when the bins are out awaiting collection, I spread the plants out to cover the area that would have been left as a bare dirt patch. It only takes an extra minute or so each week).
4. Fertilize the area with blood meal fertilizer, fresh manure (although this smell could be worse than the cat poop!) or a liquid fertilizer.
5. Fairly heavily sprinkle cinnamon, citrus peel or fresh coffee grounds on the area. You may need to repeat this process every couple of days and after rain.
6. Spray the area with some citrus essential oil – lemon or orange.
7. Spread a few garlic cloves around the area.
8. Spray the area with vinegar or red wine vinegar.
9. Place a few pine cones around the area.
10. If possible, consider covering the area with some mulch (eg. wood chips), gravel or rocks.
11. Use a commercial cat repellent available from many pet stores or vets (eg. Shake-Away Domestic Cat Repellent Urine Powder).
12. Depending on the area, you could also try placing some chicken wire there or pieces of aluminium foil. Hold the foil in place with a few rocks. This may not be ideal long term, but hopefully after a short time the cat will get the idea and find a more suitable place.
13. In some drought-ridden areas, the use of sprinklers is banned. However if this is an option for you, a motion sensor sprinkler works well.
14. You can also try keeping the area damp as cats generally prefer to use dry soil.
15. Keep a spray bottle of water handy and if you see the cat in the area, give it a quick squirt with water. Don’t drench the cat – just a quick one-second squirt is usually enough to deter it.

WARNING

Many people have recommended a heavy sprinkling of chilli powder, pepper or cayenne pepper on the area. While this may well keep the cat away, it actually gets up their nose and in their eyes (via their paws) and burns them. This is extremely cruel and has been known to cause terrible injuries as the cats try to stop the stinging. Please DON’T USE  this method.

Similarly, other forms of insect repellents (eg. mothballs), poisons and laxatives are very cruel and may cause the cat a lot of pain before slowly killing it.

Remember, the cat is only doing what comes naturally. It just needs a little guidance and education and training.

Cats are by nature fussy and clean animals. You can see them always licking their fur to make it clean and always in proper place. However, even the fussiest cat needs little grooming most especially those having long hair.

Ways of Grooming your Cat

Brushing

The amount of water should be just enough for a brisk bath. Don’t pour the water directly to the cat’s head or submerge her in the water. During the bath, your cat will sometimes howl, but she’s perfectly fine. It’s just a sign of surprise and perhaps she’s a little frightened. Once you’re done with the bath, wrap her gently in a towel and hug her for a moment. This will give her feeling of assurance. It is also a form of bonding between you and your pet.

Ear Cleaning

Every pet is different, but many of them suffer from a common health problem we are often not aware of : ear infections. You should clean your cat’s ears twice a month at least. You should be very gentle when you try to clean your cat’s ears.  Research shows that complications involving the ear are the leading health issue for dogs and rank eighth among our furry feline friends. Yet, this condition is preventable.

Despite the discomfort, our pets can’t tell us when there’s a problem. Be on the lookout for these telltale signs:

• Shaking of the head or scratching at the ears
• Discharge from the ears, especially if it is moist
• Abundance of wax in the ears
• Odor from the ears
• Red or painful ears
• Swollen ears
• Head tilt Problems with balance

Nail Trimming

The nails of a cat can be very dangerous both to your skin and to your furniture. This is the main reason why it is very important that you trim your cat’s nails on a regular basis. Do not force your cat when it does not want to. Being able to trim one or two nails is already good enough.

• All Injured Animals Can Bite
Never assume that even the gentlest pet will not bite or scratch. Pain and fear can make animals unpredictable and sometimes dangerous.

• Take Caution
Don’t attempt to hug an injured pet, and keep your face away from its mouth. Trying to get close to the animal could scare him or amplify the pain.

• Be Gentle
Perform any examination slowly and gently and stop if the pet becomes agitated. If you have to move the animal, do it extremely slowly and carefully. If your pet seems aggressive, it may be best to leave him alone until you can get help.

• Get a Hold of the Vet
Call your veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic before moving your pet. That way they will be ready for you before you arrive. You can ask the vet for any advice on how to take care of your pet’s injury.

• Consider Muzzling
You may consider muzzling your pet if he is not vomiting to reduce your chances of being bit. If you don’t have an actual muzzle, you can use towels, stockings or gauze rolls for dogs. Cats and other small animals can be wrapped in a towel to restrain them. If you wrap them, make sure they have room to breathe.

• Take Care of Injuries
If possible, try to stabilize injuries before moving the animal by splinting or bandaging them. Again, if your pet is being aggressive you may want to wait until you get further instruction from a veterinarian.

• Transport Safely
While transporting your injured pet, keep it confined in a small area to reduce the risk of additional injury. Pet carriers work well, or you can use a box or other container.

• Be Prepared
Even if your pet has never been injured, you should always be prepared for this type of situation. Keep bandages, pet carriers, muzzles and your veterinarian’s phone number on hand. When you have these things ready, pet emergencies will go more smoothly if they happen.

By following all of these steps, you should be able to provide standard pet emergency care and get your pet safely to a medical professional. The key is to take caution and be careful; all animals have the ability to bite and scratch when they’re hurt, even if they’re usually calm and gentle. Healthy Dog Gums
Pale gums usually mean that a pet doesn’t have enough red blood cells, a condition called anemia. Anemia is serious because red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. When there aren’t enough of them, oxygen levels fall, and pets get weak and tired.
Parasites are one of the most common causes of anemia. Dogs and cats produce just enough red blood cells to stay healthy. When fleas, hookworms, or other blood-sucking parasites are drinking their fill, there may not be enough blood to go around. Pale gums may be a sign of internal bleeding, resulting from ulcers or even cancer. Internal bleeding that goes on long enough can also cause anemia.
The light-coloured gums can also be caused by a serious condition called autoimmune hemolytic anemia, in which the immune system mistakenly destroys red blood cells. This type of anemia may be hereditary, with cocker spaniels, Shetland sheepdogs, collies, English springer spaniels, Old English sheepdogs, Irish setters, and poodles having the highest risk.

Finally, anemia may be a side effect of medications. Drugs such as estrogen, chloramphenicol (an antibiotic), and phenylbutazone (taken for pain) may inhibit the blood marrow from producing red blood cells. Dogs that are taking aspirin for pain will sometimes develop ulcers and internal bleeding.
Pale gums don’t always mean that your pet has anemia. After a serious accident, for example, blood pressure can fall to dangerously low levels because the heart is so busy pumping blood to vital organs that it neglects more-distant regions like the gums, toes, or the tips of the ears. This drop in blood pressure and the resulting pale gums mean that a pet is going into shock and needs emergency care.
Giving pets a balanced diet will help them recover from many forms of anemia. Your vet may recommend putting your pet on a prescription diet that is high in minerals, protein, and vitamins. Don’t give pets iron supplements without your veterinarian’s advice because they can be toxic.

Even though anemia can be dangerous, it is usually not that difficult to restore the red blood cells to healthful levels. Pets that are plagued by fleas, for example, will often recover within three to four days once you get rid of the little pests. Since anemia can make pets very weak, however, it is a good idea to avoid flea dips, powders, or other strong medications.

Bad Breath in Dogs: Could Gum Disease Be The Problem?
If your dog has bad breath, it could signal the sign of disease. Have your dog checked by a veterinarian as bad breath can be the earliest – and most easy to detect – early warn sign of canine gum disease.
Foul Breath, Plaque, & Gingivitis: All of these become more common in older dogs, especially if you have not taken care to keep your dog’s teeth clean throughout his life. Regular dental checkups may be necessary to ensure that any serious problems are quickly treated but by regularly brushing your dog’s teeth you can actively avoid problems in the first place.

A veterinarian can assess the condition of the dog’s teeth and confirm that this is where the odor is coming from (it’s important to rule out other health problems that can cause an odor on the breath). Your veterinarian can also advise you as to what steps you should take, based on the degree of tartar and periodontal disease.
