Uniqlo recruits a diverse cast for its new campaign. 15-year-old Rookie Founder/Editor Tavi Gevinson stars alongside 34-year-old model Alek Wek and 58-year-old pop singer Cyndi Lauper. The campaign features Uniqlo’s new colourful skinny jeans, and also pieces from a collaboration with Irish designer Orla Kiely, famed for her vibrant and bold prints. Orla’s range for the retailer includes scarves, printed dresses, long-sleeved shirts, tees and and tanks with patterns featuring leaves, sail boats, sliced pears, tiny cars and florals. Last week, we went backstage at London Fashion Week. Here is a look at some of our favourite shows including Basso & Brooke, Topshop Unique, Temperley London, Aminaka Wilmont, Meadham Kirchhoff, J.W. Anderson, Oliver Spencer and Jayne Pierso.

Under Emma Farrow’s helm, Topshop Unique unveiled a very wearable collection that took inspiration from old military uniforms and sixties beatnik boyfriend dressing. ’Dichotomy, birds and walls’ were the three points of inspiration behind Bruno Basso & Christopher Brooke’s AW12 offering, and translated into an elegant and print-diverse collection. Alice Temperley referenced the rich colours and textures of paintings, sculptures and tapestries from the early Renaissance period, while over at Aminaka Wilmont, the models cut dark, flowing silhouettes inspired by the composition of structures in glass, crystal and stone. Elsewhere, Ashish was awash with sequins and rainbows inspired by Goa and the New Age movement.

One of LFW’s most talked-about shows was from Meadham Kirchhoff, with models decked out in face-paint, fantastical headgear and all manner of clashing prints and textures. J.W. Anderson’s womenswear AW12 collection borrowed from his menswear collection as well as from ideas of aristocracy, youth culture and individualism.

Australian rock band My Disco are coming home after a hiatus following a five week European tour last year. After receiving stellar reviews for their third album, Little Joy, released late 2010, My Disco are again putting the touring wheels in motion as they prepare for four shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Geelong.

Last month saw the unveiling of a brand new music video for the track ‘Turn’, which features perfectly formed ballerina Erinn Arnel dancing seductively against a stunning light show by Robin Fox.

A breakaway star from the TAFE Innovators show at RAFW last year, she wowed our eyeballs with her SS12 offering ‘Queen Aurelia’. AW12′s capsule collection ‘Tropical Rebel’ continues with the surf culture nostalgia, but this time is slightly more sinister with blood-hungry sharks lurking in the dark depths of the ocean. Courtney Love, The Craft and Poison Ivy act as inspirations, while there’s a veritable dream team behind the lookbook, with Ollie Henderson in front of Byron Spencer’s lens, and Paul Bui in charge of styling. This season also sees the incorporation of unisex pieces like fleece jumpers and t-shirts, with the ‘Great White’ print (which expertly combines tie dying and screen printing techniques) a key motif. After many rumours, Radiohead have confirmed that they will tour Australia and New Zealand at the end of this year. A big “holy shit!” is in order. Their first Australian tour in 8 years and their first NZ show since 1998, they’ll be playing songs off their latest record, The King of Limbs. Having only played in Australia three times since Creep was released in 1992, this is going to sell out crazy-fast.
