It all started in my eye, with a strange, persistent sensation like an annoying hair. It didn't last long before I realized this was no minor irritation.

At first, it felt like a harmless annoyance, a tiny flicker of discomfort. After days of the “something in my eye” feeling, I started having strange sensations on my face. I visited the dentist thinking it was a dental issue. After the all-clear from the dentist, I noticed redness and irritation on my temple, I knew something more serious was happening.

My vision started blurred, light felt piercing, and it was clear I needed medical help immediately. After a visit to the urgent care, I was sent immediately to the eye doctor.

A visit to the eye doctor felt urgent-and rightly so. I was diagnosed with shingles in the eye, medically known as herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). This occurs when the varicella-zoster virus—the same one responsible for chickenpox reactivates in the nerves of the face, particularly the eyelid and forehead area.

He quickly prescribed an antiviral medication to fight the virus, antiviral eye drops and steroid eye drops to reduce the inflammation and protect my vision.

Shortly after, I was hit with flu-like symptoms: fever, achiness and a deep fatigue that wrapped around me for about a week. Simultaneously, nerve pain began -sharp, pulsing, and deeply unsettling. These nerve pain cells felt like they had taken permanent residence.

Let's pull back the curtain on what shingles really is—and why it can be so tough.

Shingles, or herpes zoster, comes from the varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-the same virus behind chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, VZV lies dormant in nerve cells and can resurface years later as shingles. About one-third of people in the U.S. will experience shingles at some point in their lives. It's most common in adults 50 years or older, though younger individuals — especially those with weakened immune systems or stress-can get it too. In my case, HZO (when shingles affects the eye) accounts for 10-20% of all shingles cases.

According to my doctor, starting treatment within 72 hours of symptoms is critical as it significantly reduces the risk of complications, such as vision loss, scarring or glaucoma.

My rash began to heal within a few weeks. The typical timeline is 2 to 4 weeks, sometimes up to 5, but the nerve pain can linger. In my case, it is going on six weeks and I still have mild itching and nerve pain. Currently keeping the area moisturized and occasionally take Benadryl for the itching.

I think we all want to know how to prevent shingles in the first place. The shingles vaccine is recommended for most adults aged 50 and up, with strong protection-about 90% effective.

If there's a takeaway from this experience, it's how quickly something that feels small can escalate-and how important timely care is. I learned that listening to my body truly matters, and that seeking help early can protect not just our health, but our peace of mind.

To anyone navigating this pathway, you're not alone. Whether you're newly facing shingles or brushing off a strange irritation, trust your instincts and always advocate for yourself. Remember to give yourself lots of grace, rest when needed and try relaxation techniques, such as quiet music, mediation, a walk in nature or prayer.

Here’s to continued health -

xoxo

Shannon

WALKING THROUGH SHINGLES

The True Meaning of Mother's Day

The True Meaning of Mother’s Day: Honoring Every Woman Who Nurtures, Inspires, and Loves

Mother’s Day is so much more than just cards and flowers. The season of renewal, fresh starts and—let’s be honest—the yearly panic about whether our winter bodies are ready for short sleeves and sunshine. But just as the trees start budding again and the birds rediscover their most flirtatious songs, midlife is the perfect time to rekindle intimacy in our relationships.

Now, before you roll your eyes and say, “Oh great, another list of date night ideas and communication tips,” let me assure you—this is not that blog post. We’re going deeper, getting creative, and, yes, adding a little humor because, let’s face it, intimacy is about more than just candlelit dinners and remembering each other’s love languages. It’s about reconnecting in ways that feel fresh, real and uniquely you in this season of life.

So let’s shake off the winter cobwebs and dive into some unexpected, slightly offbeat ways to reignite intimacy this spring.

1. Play the “What If?” Game—But Make It Spicy

Remember those late-night conversations when you first started dating where you’d dream up wild scenarios together? Maybe you talked about traveling the world or what you’d do if you won the lottery. Well, it’s time to bring that energy back—only this time, add a little heat.

Ask each other questions like:

	•	What if we had to go on the run together—what crimes would we commit?

	•	What if we could have dinner with any couple, past or present—who would it be, and why?

	•	What if we booked a last-minute trip next weekend and just disappeared for 48 hours?

These kinds of playful, slightly mischievous conversations shake up the routine and tap into that adventurous side of intimacy that often gets lost in the shuffle of mortgage payments and meal prepping.

2. Spring Cleaning…But Make It Seductive

Yes, you read that right. Spring cleaning might not sound like a love booster, but hear me out, instead of grumbling over decluttering, make it a challenge. Turn on a playlist of your old favorite songs, pour a glass of wine and go through your closet together. Model ridiculous outfits for each other. Try on things you forgot you owned. Laugh at that one sweater you swore you’d wear but never did. And if the moment presents itself, well… let’s just say, cleaning can wait.

Bonus: Find something in your home that brings back a memory—an old photo, a memento from your early days—and let it spark a conversation about a time you both felt wildly in love.

3. Create a Secret Spring Ritual

Intimacy thrives on the little things—the inside jokes, the small but meaningful traditions that belong only to you two. This spring invent a secret ritual that’s just for the two of you. Maybe it’s sneaking out for an early morning coffee date before the world wakes up. Maybe it’s leaving surprise notes in unexpected places (inside the fridge, on the bathroom mirror, tucked inside a book they’re reading).

The point? To create something that strengthens your private world.

4. Embarrass Yourselves on Purpose

Nothing strips away the walls of everyday stress like shared ridiculousness. Go to a karaoke night and butcher your favorite love song together. Take a salsa class and step on each other’s feet. Try an art night where you both attempt to draw each other’s portraits (and no, artistic talent is NOT required).

When you allow yourselves to be a little silly, you drop the expectations, the “we should be serious adults” mindset, and tap into the kind of joy that reminds you why you fell in love in the first place.

5. Plant Something Together (Metaphorically or Literally)

Since it’s spring, why not lean into nature’s theme of renewal? Whether it’s a real garden or a symbolic project, start something fresh together. Maybe you plant actual flowers or herbs in your backyard, a shared reminder of how things grow with care. Or maybe you start a “relationship time capsule,” where you write notes about your favorite moments together from this season and tuck them away to read next spring.

The point is to invest in something that represents growth, just like your love.

Spring is Your Wake-Up Call - Midlife is not a signal to slow down intimacy—it’s a reminder to redefine it. Love doesn’t get stale because of age; it gets stale because we stop putting in the effort to make it exciting. This season take a cue from nature and breathe fresh life into your connection.

After all, if the flowers can bloom again after a long, cold winter, so can we.

Much Love xoxo

Shannon

Spring Awakening: Reviving Intimacy in Midlife

A Journey of Hope

The sun beat down relentlessly as we ventured deeper into El Salvador’s countryside, the rough, dirt roads leading us to remote communities that felt worlds away from everything I knew. I had come with World Vision’s Be Chosen campaign, eager to meet Anderson, the young boy I had been sponsoring. But as we traveled from place to place, meeting families and hearing their stories, I realized this trip wasn’t just about one child—it was about an entire country in need of transformation.

Before meeting Anderson, we visited several rural communities, and the conditions were devastating. The daily struggle for survival is harsh reality in this part of the world. Many families live in makeshift homes constructed from scrap materials. Children played barefoot on dirt roads, their laughter masking the hardships they face daily.

The greatest struggle is the lack of clean water. Time and time again, we heard stories of families collecting water from contaminated sources—stagnant ponds, polluted rivers and hand-dug wells filled with bacteria or fun-off from the landfill. This was the water they drank, bathed in and cooked with—water that can cause constant illness like diarrhea, parasites and malnutrition.

We spoke with young girls who spent hours each day fetching water instead of attending school. Their futures were being shaped not by their dreams, but by their need to survive.

One of the most unforgettable moments of my trip was meeting Anderson, the child I have been sponsoring. He greeted me with a huge smile, standing beside his mother, his small hand gripping hers. His eyes were filled with excitement and shyness. Though we had exchanged letters, nothing compared to seeing him in person.

Anderson, like so many children in El Salvador, continue to face an uphill battle. His family, like many others, struggle with limited resources, unsafe water and few opportunities. Yet, standing before me, he was full of life, a reminder that even in the hardest circumstances, hope still shines through.

One thing became clear during my visit is the impact of World Vision. This organization is changing lives—not just for individual children, but for entire communities.

In areas where families once walked miles for water, wells now provide safe, drinkable water right where they live. These wells do more than quench thirst—they prevent disease, allow children to attend school, and give parents the freedom to work instead of spending hours gathering water.

Beyond clean water, World Vision equips children with knowledge and confidence. They teach essential lessons on hygiene, sanitation, bullying prevention, and safety, empowering kids to take control of their futures. Education and resources are breaking cycles of poverty that have lasted for generations.

Another remarkable aspect of World Vision’s work is how they empower women in these communities, many of whom are left to raise their families while their husbands travel long distances for meager wages. Without financial independence, these women often struggle to provide for their children. There were women that I considered “pillars of the community,” taking the education provided by the World Vision team and educating their entire communities because they want better for future generations.

Through economic empowerment programs, World Vision equips them with the tools and resources to start small businesses. I met women who had received chickens through World Vision, allowing them to sell eggs and provide both nutrition and income for their families. I had the honor of visiting one family who shared how World Vision taught them planting methods and provided them with information on nutrition and safe food practices leaving them with aspirations of a food storage business.

These programs don’t just provide for immediate needs—they instill an entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of self-worth, proving to these women that they are more than their circumstances. When women are empowered, entire communities thrive.

Despite the incredible progress being made, El Salvador remains a country in urgent need. Many communities are still waiting for safe water, healthcare, and access to education. In remote areas, families remain trapped in survival mode, unable to dream beyond their next meal or drink of water.

As I left each community, I couldn’t stop thinking about the children I met—those still waiting for help, still suffering because something as basic as clean water is out of reach. The need is urgent, but the solution is within our hands.

Meeting Anderson and visiting these communities changed me. It showed me that sponsorship isn’t just about providing—it’s about restoring dignity and creating opportunity. Anderson’s life is already different because of the support he’s received, and you can be part of that change.

Right now, a child is waiting for you. You can be the reason they have access to clean water, an education, and a bright future. Sponsor a child today through World Vision’s Be Chosen campaign and let them choose you. Or, if you want to make a lasting impact, consider gifting a well, bringing safe water to an entire community in desperate need.

Visit World Vision’s website to take action. Hope begins with YOU!

Blessings, Shannon

xoxo

We’re told that success and happiness come from always being available, always taking on more and always helping others. But what if I told you that one of the most powerful things you can do for your well-being is to simply say “no”?

The power of saying “no” is something many of us overlook, especially as we get older. In midlife, the stakes feel higher. The pressure to please everyone around us - be it family, friends, colleagues or even society - can become overwhelming. Yet, saying no is not about being selfish. It is about protecting your time, your energy, and most importantly, your peace.

Many of us struggle with saying “no” because it feels uncomfortable. We fear letting others down or feeling guilty about declining requests. There is often an underlying belief that if we don’t say yes, we’re not being helpful or we’re not living up to expectations. But constantly overcommitting ourselves comes at a high cost. The truth is, saying yes to everything often means saying no to ourselves and to what truly matters.

Saying no is a game-changer because it is a practice in setting boundaries, which is an essential tool for self-preservation. When we say no, we are making a conscious decision to protect our time, emotional energy, and mental health. It’s actually a form of self-respect and a way of prioritizing what aligns with our values and goals. By letting go of the need to please everyone, we free ourselves to focus on what really matters to us.

Saying no also helps us avoid burnout. Constantly giving to others without considering our own needs can leave us drained and resentful. But by learning to say no, we begin to restore balance in our lives. We can spend more time nurturing ourselves, pursuing our passions and giving quality attention to the relationships that truly nourish us.

I recently read Mel Robbins new book “Let Them.” Mel dives deep into the power of protecting your peace and understanding when it’s time to set boundaries. She explains that in order to thrive, we must stop over-explaining ourselves or seeking validation for our choices. Instead, we should embrace the strength of choosing what is best for us without guilt.

One of the key takeaways from Robbins’ book is that we don’t need to explain or justify every decision. Whether it’s turning down an invitation, saying no to a request at work or deciding not to take on a new responsibility, we have the right to protect our peace without offering long-winded explanations. Robbins encourages readers to embrace this simplicity as a way to reclaim their time and energy. It’s about saying no with confidence, without feeling the need to make excuses or apologize for it.

If saying no feels difficult for you, here are a few strategies to help you start:

1. Be Clear on Your Priorities: When you have a clear understanding of what matters most to you, saying no becomes easier. Does this request align with your goals, values or needs? If not, it’s okay to say no.

2. Practice Saying No: Like any new skill, saying no takes practice. Start small by saying no to minor requests. As you build confidence, you’ll be able to say no to bigger asks without guilt.

3. Be Direct but Kind: Saying no doesn’t have to be harsh. You can be firm but still polite. A simple, “I’m unable to take that on right now,” or “,This doesn’t fit into my schedule,” is enough.

4. Remember, No Is a Complete Sentence: You don’t owe anyone a lengthy explanation. It’s empowering to simply say no, and often, people will respect that.

5. Give Yourself Permission to Prioritize Yourself: At this stage of life, it’s essential to remember that your needs matter. Protecting your peace should be one of your highest priorities. By saying no when necessary, you give yourself the opportunity to truly nurture your health, happiness and well-being.

Midlife is a time of reflection, growth, and sometimes reinvention. As we enter this phase, it becomes even more critical to protect our peace - mentally, emotionally, and physically. Saying no is one of the most powerful tools we have for doing so.

By embracing the art of saying no, you create space for the things that truly matter: your health, your relationships, and your happiness. You stop living to meet the expectations of others and start living in alignment with your own desires and boundaries.

As Mel Robbins aptly puts it in “Let Them, ‘we don’t need to carry the weight of everyone else’s expectations on our shoulders. Protecting your peace means knowing when to let go, when to say no and when to focus on what truly enriches your life.

Remember, saying no is not a rejection of others. It’s an affirmation of yourself. It’s time to give yourself permission to say no, so you can say yes to a life filled with peace, purpose and joy.

In addition to Mel Robbins’ Let Them, there are several other insightful books that dive into the power of setting boundaries, saying no and protecting your peace. Each offers a unique perspective on how to reclaim your time, energy, and mental well-being by embracing the art of saying no. Here are a few noteworthy titles that expand on this important topic:

1. “Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life” by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend

This classic book on boundaries is a must-read for anyone looking to regain control of their life. Drs. Cloud and Townsend explore how boundaries are essential for emotional health and personal growth. They offer practical advice on how to set boundaries in relationships, work, and other areas of life without guilt or fear of rejection. The book also addresses why saying no is necessary for building healthy relationships and living a life that aligns with your values.

2. “Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less” by Greg McKeown

In Essentialism, Greg McKeown emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly matters and letting go of distractions. He argues that saying no to the non-essential allows us to make space for what brings the most value to our lives. Essentialism is not about doing more, but about doing less - and doing it better. This book offers a refreshing perspective on how to cut through the noise and concentrate your efforts on what is truly meaningful.

3. “The Art of Extreme Self-Care” by Cheryl Richardson

Cheryl Richardson’s The Art of Extreme Self-Care is a guide to taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, in a way that honors your needs and desires. Richardson provides strategies for saying no, setting boundaries, and creating a life that nurtures your well-being. Her approach encourages self-compassion and challenges readers to break free from the societal pressure to always be “on” for others.

4. “Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha” by Tara Brach

While Radical Acceptance isn’t specifically about saying no, it deals with the core of why we struggle with boundaries and self-acceptance in the first place. Tara Brach’s book teaches us how to accept ourselves fully - imperfections, limitations, and all. Radical acceptance is about letting go of self-judgment and embracing your authentic self. As you grow in self-acceptance, saying no to things that don’t serve you becomes a natural extension of this practice.

5. “The Gift of No” by Deborah McNamara

In The Gift of No, Deborah McNamara addresses the power of saying no from a more psychological and emotional perspective. She explores how saying no can actually be a gift to both you and the person on the receiving end, fostering healthier relationships and more honest interactions. The book delves into why we feel compelled to say yes, how to overcome that impulse, and the liberation that comes from asserting our needs.

6. “The Book of Boundaries: Set the Limits That Will Set You Free” by Melissa Urban

Melissa Urban, the co-founder of the Whole30 program, tackles the topic of boundaries head-on in her book The Book of Boundaries. This practical guide gives you step-by-step advice on how to create and enforce boundaries in different areas of life—whether at work, in relationships, or with your own personal habits. Urban also provides scripts for tough conversations and offers insight into why boundary setting is key to your mental and emotional well-being.

7. “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero

While not solely focused on saying no, Jen Sincero’s “You Are a Badass” touches on the importance of knowing your worth and protecting your energy. Sincero encourages readers to stop apologizing for wanting what they want and to stop giving their energy away to things that don’t serve their goals. She discusses how to stop people-pleasing and start living life boldly, unapologetically, and with a sense of purpose.

In short, I have come to realize that saying “No “is an Act of Self-Love Whether you’re looking to reclaim your time, focus on personal growth, or simply reduce stress, learning how to say no is one of the most empowering practices you can incorporate into your life. Each of these books offers valuable insights into the benefits of setting boundaries, protecting your peace, and embracing the freedom that comes with saying no.

By applying the wisdom from authors like Mel Robbins and Dr. Henry Cloud, you’ll not only improve your relationships but also create more space for the things that truly nourish your soul. Saying no is not about rejecting others; it’s about saying yes to yourself and your well-being.

XOXO

Shannon

The Power of Saying "No" and Protecting Your Peace

How to Combat the "Winter Blues"

Winter can be beautiful, with its snowflakes glistening and crisp air, but it can also bring with it a certain kind of heaviness. Winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), is a real phenomenon that affects many people during the colder months. The days are shorter, the sun feels like a distant memory, and the cold can seep deep into your bones. As the temperature drops and the weather often keeps us inside, it’s easy to fall into a rut of gloomy feelings. But beating the winter blues is possible with a little creativity and effort. It starts with changing your perspective and finding joy in the coziness and comfort of the season, rather than focusing on what’s missing.

One of the easiest ways to beat the winter blues is by embracing the indoors and making your home a warm, inviting retreat. Start with transforming your living space—add extra layers of soft blankets, candles, or twinkling lights to create a peaceful, uplifting atmosphere. Have fun with winter-themed crafts—perhaps a DIY candle-making kit, knitting, painting, writing, or even puzzle-solving. Baking is another comforting way to lift your spirits, with the added bonus of filling your home with the sweet, mouthwatering smell of fresh cookies, cakes, or even a hearty winter stew. If you enjoy arts and crafts, setting up a cozy corner to work on DIY projects, painting, or even scrapbooking can be a great way to pass the time and be creative.

Sometimes, however, the best cure for the winter blues involves connecting with others. Whether it’s through a virtual game night or hosting a cozy dinner gathering with friends, companionship has the power to lift your spirits. Plan a themed movie marathon with your friends or loved ones—maybe something nostalgic like childhood favorites or a binge-worthy series.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can host an indoor spa day where you indulge in self-care with facials, bath salts, and cozy robes. Even just chatting over a cup of hot cocoa or mulled wine can be enough to break through the winter fog and bring a sense of warmth. In addition, maintaining strong social connections can have a significant impact on combating the winter blues. Studies have shown that socializing, whether in person or through virtual platforms, helps reduce feelings of isolation and boosts feelings of well-being. Even casual conversations or shared activities with friends and family can release oxytocin, a hormone that promotes bonding and decreases stress. Engaging in fun indoor activities, like board games or cooking together, provides the opportunity to laugh and connect, all of which can combat the sense of loneliness that often accompanies winter.

For those who enjoy pampering themselves, winter is an ideal time to create an at-home spa experience. Set up a DIY facial, take a long soak in the tub with Epsom salts or bath oils, or try a luxurious body scrub. You can even experiment with homemade beauty treatments like face masks or hair treatments. Not only does this care for your skin and body, but it also encourages relaxation and mindfulness—both of which have been linked to improved mental health.

If staying indoors starts to feel like too much, consider a change of scenery. A weekend getaway, even if it’s just to a nearby cabin in the woods, can offer a refreshing break from the monotony. Look into local bed and breakfasts or Airbnb cabins that give you the feeling of being away without the need for a long travel commitment. If you’re craving adventure but prefer something closer, check out nearby towns for a change of pace, perhaps an indoor water park, a museum you’ve never visited, or a winter festival. A change in environment, even for just a day or two, can rejuvenate you and offer fresh perspectives. Winter is also the perfect time to start planning a trip for later in the year. Whether it’s a tropical vacation or a ski trip, having something to look forward to can make the cold months feel less daunting. Researching new destinations or reading travel blogs can give you the excitement and inspiration you need to get through drearier days.

Physical activity is another powerful tool for beating the blues. Exercise, whether it’s yoga, a home workout, or a winter sport like skiing or ice skating, releases endorphins—the body’s natural mood enhancers. Research has shown that regular physical activity can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, which often peak in the winter months. So, even though the weather might not be ideal, moving your body is an excellent way to lift your spirits and improve your mental health.

Lastly, a routine that incorporates regular sleep, a healthy diet, and mindfulness practices can help stabilize emotions and improve overall mood. The winter months can make it easier to slip into unhealthy habits like overeating or excessive napping, which can worsen feelings of lethargy and sadness. Mindfulness exercises, such as meditation or journaling, have been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health. By taking care of both your mind and body, you’re better equipped to handle the emotional challenges that winter brings.

Above all, be kind to yourself and recognize that the winter blues are normal. By embracing the season with open arms and turning it into a time of rest, creativity, and connection, you can make the most out of these colder months. Whether through indoor activities, socializing, or planning for future adventures, there are countless ways to bring joy into your life during the winter months.

XOXO

Shannon

How to Combat the "Winter Blues"

How to Start Crushing Your Bucket List

Midlife can be a time of reflection, reassessment, and a renewed focus on living life to the fullest. If you’ve spent years taking care of others, building your career or just managing the everyday, it might feel like your personal dreams and aspirations have taken a backseat. But now is the perfect time to take a look at that bucket list and start making those dreams a reality. I got serious about my list when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now that I reflect on that season, I would tell you - don’t wait until life takes an untimely turn before you start prioritizing your dreams. Here’s how to start checking things off your list and truly embrace the adventure that life has to offer.

The first step in tackling your bucket list is to make sure you have one! Get clear on your dreams. If you haven’t already written down your goals, now’s the time. Reflect on what you’ve always wanted to do, places you’ve dreamed of visiting, skills you’ve wanted to learn or experiences you’ve hoped to have. Don’t hold back—this is your chance to aim high.

Once your list is written, take some time to prioritize it. Some items may be more important to you than others or some may be easier to achieve. Prioritize based on what excites you most or what you feel will give you the greatest sense of fulfillment. For example, if you’ve always wanted to travel to Italy, but you’re also keen on learning to play an instrument, you might decide to start with music lessons to get the ball rolling. The key is to take one step at a time, so you don’t overwhelm yourself.

Some of the items on your bucket list may seem daunting or out of reach, and that’s okay to DREAM BIG! The trick is to break down larger goals into smaller, actionable steps. Let’s say you’ve always wanted to run a marathon, but it feels like a huge commitment. Start by setting up a plan: Begin with walking or jogging, then work your way up. Each small victory gets you closer to your ultimate goal. It’s all about progress, not perfection.

In order to make real progress on your bucket list, consistency is key. Whether it’s signing up for a class, traveling somewhere new, or picking up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try, create habits that support your dreams. If travel is on your list, maybe you commit to taking one weekend getaway every few months. If learning a new language excites you, set aside a few minutes each day to practice. Incorporating these activities into your routine will help keep your goals alive and prevent them from becoming just “someday” dreams.

Do not let fear hold you back. As we get older, self-doubt and fear can creep in. The idea of trying something new, taking a risk or stepping outside of your comfort zone can be intimidating, but midlife is the perfect time to face these fears head-on. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to surf or take an art class but have been too afraid to try. Take that first step anyway! Trust that the courage to pursue your dreams will bring a sense of joy and accomplishment you won’t find by playing it safe.

If you’re feeling uncertain or want someone to share the experience with, consider involving others in your journey. Having a friend, partner or family member to join you can make the process more fun, and having an accountability buddy can push you to stay committed. Whether it’s traveling to a destination together or tackling a fitness goal as a team, shared experiences are often the most memorable.

Life happens. You may run into obstacles that slow you down or cause you to adjust your plans. That’s okay! The beauty of midlife is the wisdom that comes with experience—you know that flexibility is crucial. If one goal no longer sparks excitement or if circumstances change, feel free to adapt your list. The journey is just as important as the destination, and sometimes the detours lead to the most unexpected and fulfilling experiences.

While it’s great to dream big and look ahead, it’s also important to remember that the present moment holds joy too. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment to start living your bucket list. Life is happening RIGHT NOW, and every small step toward your goals is a part of the journey. Embrace the beauty in the “here and now,” and let that fuel your continued exploration of what’s possible in the future.

Midlife isn’t a time to slow down; it’s a time to ACCELERATE TOWARD YOUR DREAMS. Whether you’re checking off items from your bucket list or simply making more room for things that bring you joy, you have the power to live with PURPOSE and INTENTION. Start small, stay focused, celebrate those small wins and remember that every step you take is an opportunity to create the life you’ve always imagined. It’s never too late to chase your dreams—so go ahead, start checking things off your list!

XOXO

Shannon

How to Start Crushing Your Bucket List

Super Bowl Snack Time

We’re less than a week away from the Super Bowl! I love the excitement surrounding the big day. My husband and I always watch the game every year with a small group of friends. This year, I’m hoping to really score with four of my favorite recipes. Grab your grocery list, because you won’t want to miss these. Game plan: Soup, chips, dips, sliders and a taco bar!

    1. Maryland Cream of Crab Soup: Snacks are my go-to Super Bowl menu choice. That being said, I still want ingredients that are both delicious and filling with lots of protein. That’s why I chose this crab soup —warm, indulgent, and satisfying! Below, you’ll find the perfect crab soup recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound Maryland jumbo lump crab meat

1 tablespoon fresh parsley

3 teaspoons OLD BAY Seasoning

1/4 cup butter

2 pints heavy whipping cream

1 quart half and half cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

1 pint milk

DIRECTIONS:

Bring milk, half and half, and heavy whipping cream to a boil. Add crab meat, fresh parsley, Old Bay Seasoning, butter, salt and pepper. When it starts to boil, make a paste of cornstarch and water to thicken soup.

4. Taco Bar - This is my favorite because I usually load up on the toppings and go for a vegetarian option. I brown some hamburger or even tofu, add a variety of tasty toppings (ex. banana peppers, pickled onions, mini sweet peppers, fried plantains, olives, grape tomatoes, avocado, fresh herbs and limes … you get the idea) and load it on a tortilla for a healthy and filling snack. And it makes a beautiful display.

Whether it’s because of life changes, relocations or simply growing apart from old connections, making new friends in midlife can sometimes feel daunting. But the truth is, forming fresh, meaningful relationships at this stage of life is not only possible—it’s incredibly rewarding. In fact, building new friendships in midlife can bring a sense of renewal and enrich your social life, offering both emotional and physical benefits. So, if you’re wondering where to start or how to go about making new friends, you’re not alone. Let’s explore why it’s worth the effort and where you can find opportunities to connect.

Why Making New Friends in Midlife is Important

Emotional Support - The midlife season often comes with its own set of challenges: career transitions, aging parents and perhaps even empty-nesting. New friendships can provide essential emotional support during these times, helping to reduce stress and increase your sense of well-being. Having a strong social network also gives you a sense of belonging, which is key for mental health.

Growth and Fresh Perspectives - Meeting people from different walks of life can broaden your horizons and offer new perspectives. Midlife can be a time for reinvention, and forming new connections gives you a chance to explore different interests, hobbies and ideas. Friends can challenge you to step outside your comfort zone, be more adventurous or even learn a new skill.

Increased Longevity - Studies show that having a strong social circle contributes to a longer, healthier life. Friendships not only boost your mood but also help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, improve your immune system and contribute to a lower risk of mental health issues like depression. The support of friends is linked to better cardiovascular health, too.

Shared Joys and Fun - As you get older, life can sometimes start to feel more routine. New friendships can inject a sense of excitement into your daily life, offering opportunities for fun activities, laughter and shared experiences. These moments of joy can increase your happiness and help you feel more connected to the world around you.

Where to Meet New Friends in Midlife

Classes and Workshops - Whether it’s a cooking class, yoga or a writing workshop, classes are a great way to meet people with similar interests. Engaging in an activity you enjoy naturally sets the stage for meeting new people, and the shared experience gives you something to bond over right from the start.

Volunteer Opportunities - Volunteering is one of the best ways to meet people while giving back to your community. Whether it’s helping out at a local food bank, animal shelter or organizing charity events, you’re likely to find others who share your values and commitment to making a difference.

Meetup Groups - Websites like Meetup.com are fantastic for connecting with people near you who have similar interests. You can find groups focused on anything from hiking, photography, car and book clubs to language exchange or meditation. These gatherings offer a low-pressure environment to get to know people at your own pace with no added pressure.

Social Media and Online Communities - While meeting friends in person is important, there’s no harm in using online platforms to find groups or individuals who share your interests. Whether it’s Facebook groups, LinkedIn, or platforms like Bumble BFF, these apps can be a great tool for connecting with like-minded people—especially if you’re in a new area or feeling a bit isolated.

Fitness and Wellness Activities - Joining a fitness class, walking group, or even a hiking club can be a fun way to meet new people while taking care of your health. Exercise not only improves physical well-being but also releases endorphins, making you feel good about yourself and more likely to attract others with a positive attitude.

Interest-Based Clubs - Whether it’s a gardening club, a wine-tasting group, or a knitting circle, interest-based clubs are a natural place to make friends in midlife. These environments foster easy conversation, and the shared interest serves as a natural icebreaker, allowing you to connect with others who share your passion.

Faith Communities - For those who are religious or spiritual, local churches, synagogues or meditation centers can offer not only a sense of belonging but also a tight-knit community where deep, lasting friendships often blossom. Participating in group activities or study sessions can be a fulfilling way to meet others who are aligned with your values.

Professional Organizations or Networking Events - Attending professional networking events or joining industry-specific organizations is another way to meet people with shared career interests. These gatherings can lead to both professional connections and friendships, especially when there’s mutual respect and camaraderie.

Local Parks and Recreation Centers - Sometimes, meeting people in a more casual setting is as simple as heading to a local park. Many community centers offer recreational sports leagues, community fitness classes, or social events. A simple walk in the park or joining a local recreational team can provide the perfect opportunity for spontaneous connections.

Neighborhood Gatherings - Getting to know your neighbors is an often-overlooked but highly effective way to create meaningful connections. Host a casual gathering or join in on block parties or neighborhood events. These interactions can lead to long-lasting friendships that are convenient and close by. We are plugged in to our community book club and card clubs. These connections have forged life-long friendships.

Tips for Building and Maintaining New Friendships

• Be Open-Minded: Don’t be afraid to step outside your usual social circles. The more open you are to meeting different kinds of people, the more likely you are to make meaningful connections.

• Take Initiative: Making new friends can require some courage. If you meet someone you click with, don’t wait for them to reach out first—suggest a coffee date or a walk in the park. The more you put yourself out there, the more you’ll get in return.

• Follow Up: After meeting someone you like, follow up and suggest an activity you both enjoy. Whether it’s a second meeting for a walk, or a visit to a museum, putting the effort into building that initial connection goes a long way.

• Quality Over Quantity: It’s not about how many friends you make—it’s about cultivating a few deep, supportive relationships. Focus on quality connections and don’t feel pressured to be friends with everyone.

• Be Patient: Friendships take time. Allow relationships to develop organically, and be patient with the process. Building trust and camaraderie requires effort and consistency, but the payoff is worth it.

My Personal Experience: Making Friends on Instagram

I never expected to make real friends on Instagram. When I first joined the platform, it was purely for personal reasons— to follow my favorite influencers, post my personal favorites and explore interests like photography and travel. But over time, I began to notice something amazing: I started connecting with people who shared not just my interests but also similar life experiences. Through mutual follow-backs, direct messages, and the occasional comment on posts, a sense of camaraderie developed. It wasn’t long before I found myself talking to people who felt more like friends than distant followers and even meeting in person. I now consider these ladies some of my very dearest and best friends.

What I’ve learned is that social media can be a surprisingly great way to build authentic connections, especially in midlife when meeting people in person can be more challenging. People on Instagram often share their lives, vulnerabilities and stories, which creates an easy way to connect beyond the surface level. And, because it’s an ongoing platform, you’re able to see what’s happening in each other’s lives in real-time, making it easier to foster deeper bonds.

A few of my Instagram friends and I now regularly chat in direct messages, share tips on things we’re learning, and even plan meetups when travel brings us closer to one another. It’s a reminder that friendship doesn’t have to be confined to geographical boundaries anymore—it can be built and nurtured online, to

Friendship in midlife can bring a renewed sense of joy, connection, and support. While meeting new people might require stepping out of your comfort zone, the benefits—emotional, physical, and social—are immeasurable. Whether you’re connecting over a shared hobby, volunteering together, or taking a fitness class, the opportunities to meet new friends are everywhere. Even platforms like Instagram, where I’ve personally met some of my closest friends, can help foster meaningful connections. So, embrace the journey, and remember: it’s never too late to make a new friend.

Meeting Friends in Midlife: The Power of New Relationships

Top Trends for 2025

I love researching style predictions for each new year. While it can be overwhelming for some, it brings me joy and excitement. I hope this article serves as your one-stop shop for all 2025 trends. Trends aren’t for everyone, but I’ve compiled a list of classy, effortless trends that I believe are here to stay.

Peep Toe Heels - Taking the runway by storm, brands like Prada and Miu Miu have embraced this shoe design for 2025. They’ve also been spotted on many celebrities. Just like most trends, they’ve cycled in and out of fashion over the years, so hopefully you still have a pair tucked away in the back of your closet ;) Now’s the time to bring them out and embrace them!

Powdery Pink - Mocha browns, and cherry reds dominated this past fall and winter. These bold colors really packed a punch. As we’re stepping into spring, we’re moving toward a softer pallet. This creamy, muted shade of pink has captured my attention. It’s stunning styled monochromatically or as a chic alternative to white or cream for the spring season.

Heirloom Bags - Bags that stand the test of time - slightly weathered, with character - are all the rage in 2025. Purses with worn-in leather that tell a story are going to be praised. We’ll be seeing vintage, second hand, and well-crafted totes this year and I’m loving the move toward sustainability and craftsmanship.

Maximal Outerwear - Capes and fringe and animal print - OH MY! We are going big this year with our outerwear. As we’re wrapping up the colder months and thinking about spring's arrival, we’re opting for show-stopping, light weight outerwear. Gone are the days of just purchasing one black peacoat for all year long. This year, we’re making a statement!

Pillbox hats - The chicest hats spotted on the runway this year are pillbox hats and barrets. These retro, classic styles are adding to the “old money” aesthetic we’ve seen increase in popularity over the past couple of years. Pair a pillbox hat with your perfect set of pearls for an iconic look - whether it’s day or night!

Romantic Daytime Lingerie - Comfort, femininity, and versatility all come together in the trend of daytime lingerie. Layering lingerie pieces under an oversized leather blazer or paired with a skirt and sneakers are an interesting way to elevate your style in 2025. PLUS, it gives you an instant confidence boost!

xoxo

Shannon

Intentions have been set and new habits are being formed. However, clouds and cold air settle over my hometown almost daily. We’ve been having many cozy evenings around the fire, which have been nice. But I have a confession to make: I’ve been growing a little restless, and we’re only two weeks into January! LOL. I wanted something exhilarating to look forward to and get excited about. Then I remembered—Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Now I’m excited! ;) I usually do something simple and sweet with my husband, but this year, I wanted to also celebrate the amazing friends I’ve made through social media. That’s when the idea of a girls’ trip/weekend started to brew.

This brings me to my first point: Prioritize celebrating the women in your life, even if it seems inconvenient. Women in ALL stages of life are busy. Whether you’re building an empire, packing kids' lunches, taking care of your house or being a caregiver for your parents, “life” always seems to get in the way of making plans. But girlfriends can be celebrated whenever and however—it just takes a little planning. This year, my girl squad decided to take a weekend getaway in the mountains (More details to come). We are all flying or driving in to our home away from home for a long weekend at the end of January. It’s a little early, but we knew we wanted to squeeze in a trip to see each other. It’s never too early to celebrate your Galentines! Whatever works for your friend group is perfect. If your friends can’t sneak away for a weekend, maybe you could have a weekend brunch instead. There are always options, and I encourage you to make it a priority and put it on the calendar! The memories you create on your weekend away will strengthen your bond and lift your spirit for now and seasons to come.

Here are a few other Galentine’s ideas:
Hosting a Galentine’s-themed party is always one of my favorites. I love setting stunning tablescapes, planning the perfect menu, and finding a playlist for the best vibes. If you’re hosting this year and feel stuck deciding on cuisine, try mixing it up with a Pizza Making Party or a Sushi Making Party. Everyone can bring their favorite toppings, and you can make homemade pizzas together with your favorite wines.

If you’re feeling crafty this year, try an at-home Paint and Sip. You could paint wine glasses or canvases and enjoy some charcuterie while you work!

Have you heard of a “My Favorite Thing” party? It’s been all the buzz lately! The idea is simple but so much fun. Everyone invited buys one of their “Favorite Things” to share with the group. It could be a makeup product, a body lotion, a candle or even a new cheese to try—the possibilities are endless! At the end of the party, everyone leaves with one of everyone’s favorite things. Who doesn’t love a gift swap?
Tip: Set a price limit to keep it affordable for everyone!

If you’re feeling cozy this year, try a spa night or game night at home where everyone comes dressed in their favorite Galentine’s pajamas.

If your girl gang is in the mood for a night out, try a rooftop bar in a nearby city. Most in our area have firepits and craft cocktails. The views will feel magical. I also suggest mixing it up. Try having drinks at one spot, appetizers at another and ending the night with a main course and dessert or even back home for late night s’mores and a rom com movie.

What to Wear:
2024 and 2025 have been all about pink, sequins and bows. It’s been the year for the girlies, and I’m loving it! I’ll be focusing on pink this year. Pink has been having a moment. My philosophy is: Go big and glam hard! Bows, sequins, satin, feathers, fringe - if there’s a trend you’ve been wanting to try what are you waiting for? NOW is the time …….. to celebrate life and our girlfriends.

The holidays were extra busy! We had a blast and made many memories along the way, but there was no time for cleaning. We were too busy decorating ginerbreads to think about organizing. If you read my last blog post we talked about easing into our goals and setting intentions. This year, I hope to be more organized and minimalistic. So we’re starting small.

Take it Slow: In years past, I would get a burst of energy and clean the entire house in one weekend. This left me feeling anxious, overwhelmed and burnt out. I’m trying something new this year. I’m starting small and taking it slow. An easy tip is to create a customized calendar on Canva and laminate it with what days you’ll tackle certain areas over the next few months. It may take until March, but you’ll be set up for a successful summer. A physical checkmark helps create the feeling of accomplishment which can fuel you to keep going!

One in/One Out Rule - A personal rule I set for myself is if I buy something new, I donate, sell or discard one older item. For example, a new purse means selling or donating a handbag. This can work for most things in our home: rugs, blankets, pajamas, dresses, etc. This way we’re making space for what’s new. Once you make room for that item, who knows, you may even find yourself wanting to donate a few more items. I have been using this rule for over a year now and my closet always feels clean and organized.

No More Hangers - Another rule I’ve set for myself is not buying anymore hangers. This may seem silly, but in my opinion “there’s always more room”. I would buy more hangers and squeeze my clothes so tight in my closet. However, everything was so cluttered, I couldn’t even see what I had and then I would forget what I owned. I would end up buying similar items and never felt like I had anything to wear.

Marie Kondo - Minimalism was popular in the 60s and 70s, then it regained popularity in the early 2000s. Podcasts and articles started swirling about how less is more. Tiny homes became popular and in 2019, Marie Kondo released a show on Netflix called “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” Her famous catchphrase - “Does this spark joy” took the world by a storm. We had never heard of clutter talked about in this way and in a sense it was a new twist on minimalism. This question has stuck with me over the last 5 years. I often ask myself as I’m cleaning out, does this spark joy? Of course, some things are purely practical, but in general you can ask yourself this question in relation to home decor, clothing and accessories. Hopefully, this question can help you as you’re looking to declutter your home.

Physical and Mental Clutter - A clean space equals a clean mind. The last thing I do before I go to bed is head downstairs and make sure the dishes in the sink are washed and the dishwasher is unloaded. I put my dirty clothes in the laundry basket in the laundry room and I pick out my outfit for the next day. This is nonnegotiable. I do this not because I want to, but because I know it will set my mental space up for success the following day. The more you create intentionality in your home with organization, I believe the more peace you’ll feel.

Take it one area at a time - Starting small is less daunting. Over the holiday, I cleaned out a dresser one day and the next I cleaned out my jewelry. I felt less rushed and could really devote time to the task at hand. The weekend I cleaned out my laundry area. Setting small goals are more attainable.

Decluttering is Cathartic - There’s really a special feel that comes with decluttering. Getting rid of things that no longer serve you, helps relieve stress. Let’s be stress free this year together!

I hope you have the best year and wish you the best luck in organizing!

Tips for Decluttering in the New Year

How to Have Successful Realistic Goals in 2025!

IT’S GOOD TO DREAM

At some point in life, we stop dreaming. When we're young, we're often asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "What college are you going to?" "What are you studying?" But eventually, people stop asking these questions—maybe when we enter a career or start our first job.

As I thought about 2025, I was reminded that we should never stop dreaming, thinking about what's next, and imagining what life could be. Some of you may know that I worked as a Court Reporter for 35 years. I loved my career and still work in the field today. I've made lifelong friends and learned so much. However, my creative side began to itch for something more. Several years ago, I started exploring social media. If I had stopped dreaming, I wouldn’t be here today, writing this blog post.

This is why, even at 50, 60, 70 or beyond, we’re meant to keep dreaming and remain hopeful. We’re creative beings with a natural desire for change and new experiences. How beautiful it is that, once a year, we have the opportunity to reflect, be thankful for the year gone by and dream about all the possibilities the new year holds.

SET INTENTIONS

As I began thinking about the new year, it felt more like a chore. I looked at the goals I’ve set in the past and couldn’t help but laugh, because I rarely stick with any of them. I’m sure we can all agree that New Year’s goals and resolutions can feel a bit discouraging. Some of the ones I remember are: work out every day, eat <30 carbs daily, eat 100g protein daily, walk 12k steps daily, take daily supplements. It starts to sound more like a to-do list than a vision for the year ahead.

That’s why I’ve started setting intentions for the new year instead. I focus on how I want to feel, not just what I want to accomplish. I’ve found that choosing a word for the year is a great way to focus on what’s truly important to me. For example, if you want to prioritize peace, you might set an intention to spend 30 minutes of quiet, alone time daily. Or if your word is family, you could make a point to create memories with your loved ones throughout the year.

If you’re trying to pick a word for 2025, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

What do I value most?

In what areas could I see myself growing?

What brings me joy?

If I died tomorrow, what would I want to be remembered for?

START SMALL

Once you’ve set your intention for the year, it’s time to start implementing practical habits to help you achieve your vision, goals and intentions. This is where people often get overly ambitious. I’m not saying you can’t achieve your goals, but speaking from personal experience—and statistics—it’s easy to get ahead of yourself. According to Baylor College of Medicine, “88 percent of people who set New Year’s resolutions fail within the first two weeks.” Resolutions don’t seem to work for 88% of Americans, and they haven’t worked for me either.

So, as you think about the habits you want to implement in 2025, start SMALL! You might feel like it’s not enough, or that it won’t make a difference, or that it’s not drastic enough—but it needs to be something approachable. For example, if your word of the year is HEALTH and you want to build habits to feel more energized, set a realistic goal like going to the gym twice a week. It takes 66 days to form a habit. Once you’ve mastered that routine, then you can add another day.

This slow and steady approach may seem too small, but it will help you build lasting habits—rather than burning yourself out by relying on willpower alone.

PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION

If you're truly looking to set achievable goals, it's about progress over perfection. I believe the reason 88% of people fail at their resolutions is that as soon as they “cheat on their diet” or miss one gym session they think, “Forget it, I’ll start next month or next year...” It’s easy to fall into this cycle. But I don’t want that for myself, and I don’t want that for you. I want us to form habits that CHANGE OUR LIVES. And it doesn’t even have to wait until January 1st, 2025— you can start your new habits tomorrow.

I want to encourage you not to get discouraged. If you set a goal and get off course, remember: tomorrow is always a new day with new opportunities. You can choose yourself again tomorrow. Keep showing up for yourself and keep saying yes to the life you dream of.

I believe in you! Happy New Year xoxo

How to Have Successful Realistic Goals in 2025!

Finding the Perfect Gift

The Secret to Finding the PERFECT GIFT for Every Person on Your List

Do you know that one person that is the perfect “gift giver?” I have a friend or two that always gives the best gifts. I have thought a lot about what makes the gift so perfect, and that is the time put in to studying the recipient. First, do they have a hobby? Do they like to read? Do they like an experience or an actual gift? You get the idea.

So It’s that time again. I always try to get ahead of the shopping game, yet I always find myself searching on Amazon the weekend before Christmas, finishing up all my last-minute stocking stuffers. I’ve compiled a list for those who are potentially hard to buy for. Maybe they already “have everything,” or maybe we don’t know them well enough to know what they would use, need, or enjoy. I hope this list helps you with your last-minute shopping as you’re tying a bow on CHRISTMAS 2024!

The Homebody

I’m obsessed with the brand Cozy Earth. Their pajama line has been on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” list for years. How could pajamas make that list, you might ask? This long-sleeve matching set has impeccable quality and a long list of color options for anyone on your list. I bought a pair over a year ago and wear them often. They don’t pill, become thin with multiple washes, and are just as soft and cozy as they were when I first ripped them out of the packaging. Cozy Earth often runs sales, so try to snag them when they’re discounted. I would also recommend their sheet sets. They not only come in beautiful colors, they’ve become fan favorites throughout the cozy community, and I’d be doing you a disservice if I didn’t mention them. If I haven't mentioned, I'm a big proponent of gift baskets. I’d grab this pajama set for the homebody on my list and assemble a basket with a candle, essential oils, and maybe even a face mask or lip scrub. I truly believe anyone on your list would rave over these!

The Gym Enthusiast

We all know an athlete, a gym bro or your gal pal who just got into fitness, and I know the perfect Christmas gift for them: the Magnetic Bottle Bag. This is often something people wouldn’t buy for themselves, which is the most exciting thing about gift shopping. I want it to be something special, maybe slightly unnecessary, but to them it’s a treat because it makes their life easier or more enjoyable. That’s what’s perfect about the Magnetic Bottle Bag. It holds your water bottle while also magnetically attaching to any metal surface. It has pockets for your cell phone, pre-workout powder, earbuds, and resistance bands. You can even clip your keys to the adjustable strap and toss it over your shoulder. Cleanliness and compactibility are the stars of the show. No longer tossing all your belongings on the gym floor. 10/10 recommend this product!

The Workaholic

Those who work hard, often play hard AND are incredibly busy. I find that many of my friends hardly have time to do other things outside of their jobs. We’re in a busy time where we’re being pulled in many directions. Cue my favorite gift for my workaholics, even if they don’t want to admit it ;) A standup desk with a walking pad is great for those who are busy and need to stack good habits. I’m all about habit stacking! If we don’t have time to take a one-mile walk during our days, break out your walking pad. It’s a great way to get movement and helps with distractions, actually increasing productivity. Secondly, digital business cards have grown in popularity over the past couple of years. Anyone who is an entrepreneur or major networker NEEDS A DIGITAL BUSINESS CARD. You can link your phone number, email address, website and all your socials.

The Techy (or Maybe the Forgetful One)

AirTags are being used for everything! In your child’s book bag, on your keys, on your pet’s collar or just attached to any belonging you often lose. This is a great gift for your tech-obsessed friends and family members.

The Sister

Many of the ladies in my life do SO MUCH for everyone around them and don’t take time to unwind or do a little self care. For the sister in your life, (or someone who plays that role) I’m suggesting a gift that’s an experience. A massage or a facial at a local spa is a great experience that would serve as an incredible gift. I know I’d love it!

The Healthy Guy or Gal

If you’re wanting to really impress the healthy person in your life, the Hatch Alarm Clock, Power Plate, or Shakti Mat are sure to do just that! These are unique gifts that can all benefit anyone’s health routine. Whether through building strength with the Power Plate, meditating on the Shakti Mat, or improving your sleep routine with the Hatch Alarm Clock, these are all winners in my book!

Parents/Grandparents

We all love them and want to bless them because we know they do so much for us, but in my experience, they already have everything, never want anything, and never really like what I get them! I’ve started opting for more sentimental and personal gifts for those in this stage of life. Shutterfly has a user-friendly calendar builder where you can upload your favorite photos to create a special calendar for the upcoming year. Go Black Friday shopping. Cyber Monday… add to cart. Have dinner with friends. Decorate the Christmas tree. Frost holiday cookies. Drink hot chocolate. Watch Hallmark movies. Wrap gifts... THE LIST GOES ON AND ON! These moments sound exciting, but they also bring a pang of anxiety. Anyone else? The pressure to "get into the holiday spirit" and check off every last item on my to-do list can feel overwhelming. I’m already stressed just typing this.

I was determined that this holiday season would be different. I wanted to pause, be thankful, sit around the table with my family and truly enjoy the meal we had just prepared together. That's when I stumbled across the word “hygge.” I quickly knew I wanted to embrace the Danish tradition of hygge (pronounced hoo-guh). A quick Google search will show you that it’s hard to fully capture the essence of hygge in a single definition, and that's because it's more of a feeling than a concrete concept. The more I explored it, the more I realized I just HAD to implement it, ASAP! I didn’t even fully know how, but I was on a mission. Eventually, I found a definition that resonated:

"A quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being."

Helen Russell, a British journalist, wrote a book titled The Year of Living Danishly, in which she defines hygge as “taking pleasure in the presence of gentle, soothing things.”

Coziness, friendliness and contentment are probably the closest English synonyms for hygge. Did you know that the Danish are ranked among the happiest people in the world? I think it has something to do with their hygge-ing ;)

So, how can we hygge in America? Is it even possible? Is it selfish? Let’s dive in!

IT’S ALL ABOUT MINDSET

It may seem impossible to embody the word hygge in America. When I first read the definition, I thought about my holiday to-do list and immediately wondered what I would need to cross off to fit "hygge" into my schedule. But I was missing the point. Hygge isn’t something to add to your list — it’s a mindset. It’s about taking the things already in your schedule and making them more meaningful, less stressful and more intentional.

For example, let’s say you have to go Christmas shopping. Instead of focusing on how packed it’s going to be or rushing through Black Friday sales where you might get trampled, try visiting your local farmer’s market, rain or shine. Maybe invite a friend and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the market with a coffee in hand. Look for crafted gifts from local artisans, or perhaps you’ve thought about making homemade gifts this year — like ornaments, a loaf of sourdough with jam or a freshly baked pie. Often, hygge is about slowing down, appreciating what’s around you, and embracing simple living.

Some of the best things in life are free: being outside, listening to live music or taking a walk by the water. AND THE BEST PART ABOUT HYGGE is that you can do it alone or with others. These small moments can be enjoyed with a small group of close friends (which is often how the Danish do it) or by yourself, curled up in your own living room.

There are many beautiful traditions and ways of life in other cultures. As Americans, we often have a sense of patriotism and are taught that the Western way of life is the only way. But I think we can all admit there are things that America doesn’t get right 100% of the time. We don’t have it all figured out, and I think that’s beautiful. America is a melting pot of cultures, and we can always learn and grow from others around the world. Hygge is just one example.

Other examples of cultural practices that embrace similar values include meditation, herbs and Ayurvedic practices from Eastern cultures. Europeans are praised for their higher quality of food and leisurely mealtimes. In the Philippines, meals are often served family-style, fostering a great sense of unity in the community. In Stockholm, gathering outdoors is a cherished tradition. Even in winter, restaurants provide blankets so diners can enjoy their meals outside in comfort. These customs and traditions are beautiful and they deserve to be celebrated and admired.

Even when your schedule feels too busy or your life too hectic, I challenge you to shift your mindset. It may seem like extra work at first, but the more you practice this cozy, present and intentional way of living with those around you, the more natural it will become.

Here are a few ways I’ve been tapping into the art of hygge in my daily life:

Reading by the fire

Quiet time reading my devotional by the lighted Christmas tree in the mornings

Grabbing a cup of hot cocoa with your significant other and strolling through town

Having a picnic in the park

Meeting a friend for a walk and wine afterward

Slipping into your favorite cozy boots

Making your daily tea time more thoughtful, almost ceremonial

If you find yourself stressed this holiday season, you’ve come to the right place. I want my Instagram, website and blog to feel like a resting place for you. No pressure for perfection or materialism — just a space to be and enjoy. And, of course, with a few sprinkles of styling tips along the way. I hope that’s what I’ve inspired you to do today!

If you are looking to learn more about hygge - I have enjoyed these books.

The Little Book of Hygge

How to Hygge

EMBRACING HYGGE

WINTER SKIN CARE ROUTINE

The chilling temps have entered the chat. I live in Coastal Virginia, and we’ve just hit the 40s and 50s . Our autumns can be quite toasty near the coast, but now that the cold has arrived, we have had to turn on the heat and I’m using my heated blanket religiously. Who doesn’t love these cozy months? With a book in hand, I’ve been cuddling up by the fire. However, I’ve noticed something—MY SKIN IS CRYING FOR HELP. It's dry and thirsty for moisture.

I used to use the same skincare products all year long, but in the last five years I change my skincare routine with the season. I’ve revamped my skincare routine to keep my skin more hydrated, supple and youthful-looking through the winter months.

Here are eight of my holy grail WINTER SKINCARE TIPS:

A Good Foundation:

Our bodies are temples, and glowing skin starts from the inside. I stir away from sugary drinks and only have a sweet treat occasionally. My number one skincare tip is all about hydration and nutrition. If you're looking to bring back that youthful glow, drink plenty of water to flush out toxins—especially around the holidays. Between spiked cider and all those Christmas cookies, our skin can feel bloated and puffy. To combat the bloat, eat anti-inflammatory fruits and veggies. Berries, nuts, seeds, ginger, turmeric, and green tea are staples I keep on hand. Gua Sha and facial cupping are also great tools to use in the winter months. I use these with a gentle oil in the mornings to get my lymphatic system moving. Gua Sha and facial cupping help depuff and improve blood flow to the face.

Remove Your Makeup (Properly):

Imagine you've had a fun night out, you're in full glam, and you can’t wait to lay your head on the pillow. BUT WAIT—don’t forget to remove your makeup! Makeup remover wipes, although convenient, can be harsh on your skin’s natural barrier. I tossed them from my routine a couple of years ago. Now, I use a cleansing oil to remove all my makeup, leaving my face feeling clean but without stripping its natural oils. The Camellia Cleansing Oil is a cult classic. Tata Harper’s Nourishing Oil Cleanser and Core Ritual Cleansing Oil for are also great options.

Shower Temperature Matters:

I love a hot bath or shower, but extreme temperatures aren’t the best for our skin. I recommend keeping your shower temperature lukewarm. According to Healthline, “Hot water damages the keratin cells in the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin. This disruption can lead to dryness, irritation, and the loss of natural oils.” Hot water can strip your skin of moisture, leaving it feeling dry and irritated. Shorter showers are also better for your skin.

Apply Products Right After Showering:

When your skin is still damp from a shower, it’s the perfect time to apply your skincare products. This helps your moisturizer absorb better and locks in moisture for more nourished skin throughout the day. When your skin is well-moisturized, your makeup will apply more smoothly as well.

Choose Your Moisturizer Wisely:

Even oily skin types need moisturizer in the winter! Opt for thicker formulas that will help trap moisture in. Look for Non-Comedogenic moisturizers that won’t clog your pores or make your skin more acne-prone.

Sunscreen ALL YEAR ROUND:

Sunscreen is a must, even in winter. Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF 30 on your face daily. While it may seem like the sun’s rays aren’t as strong in winter, they still shine through car windows, reflect off snow, and reach your skin. This is why I believe sunscreen year-round is essential! Sunscreen is the foundation for youthful, wrinkle-free skin.

Gentle Cleansers:

Gentle cleansing helps preserve your skin’s natural oils and protective barrier. According to Neutrogena, gentle cleansers use non-irritating ingredients that cleanse without causing dryness or sensitivity. Personally, I don’t wash my face in the morning; I just rinse it with cool water. I save the cleansing for the evening when I remove my makeup. This way, my skin stays naturally moisturized for the next day.

Exfoliate Wisely:

Chemical exfoliators are better than physical exfoliators because they are less likely to irritate the skin. Physical exfoliators can be rough and cause microtears, leading to redness and blemishes. For winter, I recommend using PHAs or Azelaic Acid, which are gentler than AHAs and BHAs. Great options include products from Paula’s Choice, The Ordinary, and Open Formula..

HERE’S TO GLOWING SKIN THIS WINTER

XOXO

WINTER SKIN CARE ROUTINE

HOLIDAY CAPSULE WARDROBE

OVERVIEW OF WHAT’S TO COME

'Tis the season for elegant holiday glitz and glamour! With 47 days until Christmas, ladies, the pressure is on (at least, that’s how I’m feeling). Christmas movies running in the background, holiday tunes filling the air and decorations popping up all over the block. Not to mention, everyone on social media has already decorated. I’m feeling a little behind over here!

One thing I’m NOT behind on? My holiday capsule wardrobe. Simple, elegant, and glamorous—that’s the vibe I’m going for this year. The best part about a holiday capsule wardrobe is that when Christmas sneaks up on you (as it always does), there’s no need to stress. You can always rely on your trusted pieces to pull everything together. No more last-minute Amazon orders hoping your dress will arrive on time. We’re keeping it simple, being prepared and feeling fabulous. Follow along for my tips and tricks on how to be a showstopper this festive season with a streamlined, easy-to-put-together wardrobe!

WHY CAPSULE WARDROBE?

It’s all about keeping it simple. That’s the theme for this year. If you’ve been following along on the blog, you know I’m all about simple, meaningful, stress-free living in almost every area of my life—whether I’m hosting a party, prepping for a trip, or tackling holiday prep. I like to keep it painless.

The holidays come with so much stress already—decorating, cooking, and fitting everything into an already overly packed schedule. What I want to focus on is spending quality time with my family—baking cookies with my daughter, sipping my favorite “healthy” hot cocoa around the bonfire (link to mushroom hot chocolate), and enjoying time with my niece and nephew. But I still want to look fabulous doing it! Can I get an amen?! ;)

This is why I swear by a holiday capsule wardrobe. It allows me to be prepared, look great and spend more time doing what matters most to me.

WHAT PIECES SHOULD WE AVOID?

I’ve definitely fallen into the “trend trap” more times than I care to admit. Last year it was frilly bows, platform Uggs, and corporate holiday attire. This year, it’s all about long leather gloves and oversized fur coats with a defined waist. These all sound incredible, but trends change so fast, it’s hard to keep up!

This is exactly why I’m sharing my Christmas capsule wardrobe with you: to help you avoid the trend cycle and focus on timeless, elegant pieces that never go out of style. A holiday capsule wardrobe is about creating a stunning festive look that will still feel classy in 20 years—not just trendy.

If you must incorporate a trend into your capsule, I recommend choosing something versatile—either a piece that can be worn all winter or an accessory you can reuse each year. This way you stay on-trend without overspending.

WHAT PIECES ARE A MUST?

Let’s talk must-haves! Here are the key pieces I can’t live without in my holiday capsule wardrobe:

Leather: I’ve worn leather every holiday season for as long as I can remember. It’s powerful, chic, and warm—perfect for the colder months. A great pair of straight-leg leather pants is ideal for any festive sweater or sparkly blouse. Leather speaks confidence! Not into leather pants? Try an oversized leather blazer—it radiates power. Let’s leave the leather leggings at home and go for a looser fit this season (even though I know they’re comfy as heck!).

Velvet: Velvet is my absolute favorite for fall and winter. It elevates any outfit instantly, making you feel like you're in the holiday spirit without going overboard. For the holiday capsule, I recommend opting for rich, deep colors like olive green or burgundy. A velvet blazer, pants, or vest in one of these shades is festive without being too “on the nose.” These are a few of my favorite pieces.

Sequins & Sparkles: Let's add some sparkle to the holiday season! I love a little extra glitz year-round, but especially at Christmastime. A sequined clutch, brooch, or heels can instantly turn any outfit from basic to fabulous.

Shades of Red: You need a red sweater this season. Trust me. It’s a must-have for any holiday occasion—from office parties to family dinners. The best part? You can find a red sweater at any price point, from Amazon to Nordstrom. It’s a versatile piece you’ll wear time and time again. Burgundy, ruby, merlot - any shade of red puts me in the Christmas spirit! Adding all the reds to cart now.

Red Lips: The French have been rocking red lips for ages, and Christmas is the perfect time to channel that classic look. I’ve always been a little hesitant to wear bold red lips year-round, but the holiday season is the perfect excuse to go for it. Red lips add instant glamour and class to any look. I’ve linked a few of my favorites below.

I’d love to see how you’re styling your holiday outfits this year! Tag me on Instagram with your Christmas looks—you can’t live without! It’s so easy to get caught up in the flurry of party prep, trying to perfect every detail and make everything just right. But over the years, I’ve come to realize that the best gatherings aren’t defined by the perfection of your home or menu. Instead, they’re defined by the warmth and connection you create and the joy that flows from simply being together.

I’ve made it my mission to host in a way that’s peaceful and meaningful—because home is meant to feel like “home “from the moment your guests walk through the door. Whether it's the welcoming aroma, the food on the table or the overall ambience, every detail matters. But here’s the catch: I’ve vowed to leave behind the anxiety of last-minute prepping and the rush of cleaning and to focus more on being present and letting my gatherings unfold naturally.

The Trap of Perfection

In the past, I would spend hours—days even—scrubbing everything from the kitchen counters to the baseboards, all in the name of perfection. By the time guests arrived, I was exhausted, frazzled and had little energy left to actually enjoy the moment. The constant hustle and bustle—the trips to the grocery store, the endless cleaning, the menu prepping—meant I was too drained to truly embrace the gathering. I’d lost sight of what really mattered: spending time with loved ones.

Through trial and error, I’ve learned that hosting doesn’t have to be stressful. It doesn’t need to be perfect to be memorable. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that the best gatherings are the simplest ones—the ones where the focus isn’t on the details, but on the people we love.

The True Meaning of Gatherings

Holidays, special occasions, family reunions—these are the moments we live for. It’s not about a perfectly-plated meal or a spotless home, it’s about the joy that comes with being surrounded by family and friends. I used to stress about the “perfect” event, worried that every detail had to be flawless, and in doing so, I missed out on the joy of being present. I learned the hard way that letting go of perfection is key to making those moments truly meaningful.

How to Host Simply But Meaningfully

Hosting doesn’t need to be complicated to be beautiful. Here are a few ways I’ve found to make gatherings simple, yet still incredibly meaningful:

1. Keep It Stocked & Simple

For me, the best way to prepare for an impromptu gathering is to always have a few staples on hand. I like to keep a selection of fun beverages, homemade sparkling waters, refreshing cocktails or mocktails with fresh garnishes, and even a new wine or two stocked in my pantry. The secret to making last-minute visits feel “classy” is all about having these essentials ready to go.

I also keep a few shelf-stable snacks like crackers, dried fruit, olives and jams, which allow me to easily assemble a quick charcuterie board or snack spread at a moment’s notice. It doesn’t need to be elaborate—just a few quality ingredients thoughtfully put together can go a long way. We love gathering around our kitchen island, the heart of our home, where these snacks naturally foster conversation, connection and laughter. Maybe it's the Italian in me, but food always fosters connection - from a big bowl of pasta, to an aperol spritz!

2. Create a Welcoming Ambience

Ambience is everything. It’s not about having a picture-perfect home—it’s about making your space feel comfortable and inviting for your guests. Over the years, I’ve realized that the best experiences are those that engage all five senses. Here’s how I’ve learned to do it:

Sight: A tidy, uncluttered space with soft, ambient lighting sets the tone for relaxation. I prefer warm, cozy lighting over bright overheads for a more intimate, calming atmosphere, and a few candles and simple fresh flowers always soften the space.

Touch: Comfort is key. A soft, cozy couch with plenty of blankets is a must. I always want my guests to feel relaxed, so I make sure they have what they need to feel at ease, whether it’s a pillow, an extra throw or an ottoman.

Smell: A welcoming scent can make all the difference. Whether it’s a beloved Italian dish cooking in the kitchen or a few drops of essential oil in the diffuser, the right scent adds an extra layer of comfort. My favorite is a simmer pot filled with seasonal spices. You can even make up a few simmer pot jars and keep in the fridge until ready to use. I’ve included one of my go-to recipes below!

Taste: Elevate the dining experience with fun, unexpected flavors. I love to add fresh herbs, spices, or simple garnishes to my meals and drinks to give them that “wow” factor. The smallest details can turn a meal into a sensory experience.

Sound: Music is the invisible thread that ties everything together. Soft classical jazz or seasonal tunes during the holidays create the perfect backdrop for conversation. Music should enhance the experience, not overpower it.

3. Keep Your Space Clean (Without Overdoing It)

A perfectly spotless, sparkling home sounds enchanting, but the time and energy exerted to achieve this just isn’t attainable—at least not every time. My best tip for having a clean home just in time for a gathering is by keeping up with regular house chores throughout the week. Sweeping the floors, wiping down countertops, tidying common spaces, and keeping the sink and bathroom clean are the little things that go a long way. If I stay on top of these tasks, a last-minute Saturday game night only requires a quick tiding up to keep everything looking hygienic.

The goal isn’t to obsess over every last speck of dust or mess, but rather to create the appearance of a clean space. A visually clean home immediately helps others feel at ease and relaxed. When people walk in, they should feel welcomed by the environment—not by perfection, but by the comfort and order of the space.

Seasonal Simmer Pot Recipe
Here’s one of my favorite simmer pot recipes to fill your home with a cozy, welcoming aroma:

Water

1 orange or clementine, sliced

3-4 cinnamon sticks

1 tablespoon whole cloves

A few sprigs of fresh rosemary

3/4 cup cranberries

Add everything to a pot, bring to a simmer, and enjoy the scent that fills your home!

Hosting isn’t about achieving perfection—it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, relaxed and connected. The holidays are underway. Is it just us or do all families go around the table on Thanksgiving day and say what we are grateful for? “Our family, our house, friends” - My family’s voices echo through the room. Each shout is a thread in our shared narrative that binds us together in the bustling moment of Thanksgiving. BUT THERE IS MORE. Why are we just thankful on a certain holiday? How can we posture our hearts toward appreciativeness every day? These questions have been swirling in my mind. And to add another to the mix: when you’re feeling hopeless, overwhelmed or struggling to find reasons for gratitude, how can you still cultivate a sense of thankfulness?

We’ve all found ourselves in one season or another in some sort of trouble, trial, season of sadness or suffering. Being overwhelmed or stressed is part of human existence. It seems like each day has another headline or news article to add to our daily stress. This stress can cause us to disassociate and numb out. Before we know it, we’re back to the next holiday season sitting around the table shouting out the things we’re thankful for again. The human experience includes connection, creativity, culture, and learning, but I’d like to add trauma, mental health issues, physical health issues, and grief - just to name a few. We all experience it to some extent, but there is still hope to be found in the midst of our trouble..

MINDSET

It truly comes down to mindset! As a breast cancer survivor, I have had to endure hard news and even more difficult times during treatments and ultimately surgeries. I had to keep reminding myself that there is more to life than how I felt in that exact moment. Our circumstances can become all-consuming. Our thoughts often shape our reality and can sometimes make it seem worse than it actually is.

I’m not saying you can’t acknowledge that a particular season is challenging. Cancer SUCKS; treatments are awful, and they can feel overwhelming, but “choose” to stay strong. From the moment my feet hit the floor, I start my day with gratitude for another day and vowed just to focus on “today” and finding the joy and blessings of each and every day, such as a beautiful sunrise or sunset or an unexpected call from a friend. These little God winks kept me going.

I promised myself I would put on “real clothes,” as I call them, and apply my makeup. Even if I took an afternoon nap, I would do it with mascara and lipstick on. Everyone battles their own mind games in seasons of hopelessness, but having a positive mindset helped me stay the course. Even when I felt like I was on the verge of spiraling, I was reminded that I could ask the Lord for a sound mind. I clung to this verse in the midst of my trial:

2 Timothy 1:7: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

There is life on the other side of every bad situation, and for this, I am thankful. I knew it wouldn’t last forever, just as your challenges won’t last forever. For this, you have a reason to be thankful, too!

SURRENDER

Now surrender is a challenge for me. I like to have a plan, be prepared and ultimately be in control. I think most women do. I am, after all, a Type A personality. Maybe it’s innate inside us to keep all the plates spinning at once. Women do so much for their families, households and careers. The mental and physical load that we carry - I think we are all super women! This is why when we are faced with a season of depression, grief, illness or overwhelm, it slows us down, as it should. We are often stopped in our tracks. It feels like the world around us is crumbling. Maybe this is how it should have been all along. I think physically our bodies indicate what’s going on internally. When we find ourselves in one of these hopeless times, our body is pleading with us. Our body needs to rest. Our minds need to rest. We need time to feel. AND THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO SURRENDER. When we can’t hold it all together ourselves, we’re reminded that we aren’t meant to. God wants to carry our load, and our friends and family want to help carry the load. We aren’t in it alone! And for this, I have a reason to be thankful and you do too!

SERVING OTHERS

Sometimes we have to physically remove ourselves from our own situations. The more we dwell on what we can’t change, the worse our situations feel. I have found that wallowing in my own stress and hopelessness just leads to more self-pity and depression. This is why I recommend serving others.

I have found that when we serve others in need we are taking the focus off of ourselves, which allows us to be present in the moment. We’re getting out of the spiral in our minds and into our physical bodies. This is an act of medication and it’s a gift to ourselves, as well as to others. This perspective shift from internal to external changes everything. When we see others in need, we realize everyone has challenging situations. This shared experience fosters a sense of connection to community. I always say, “Everyone has a story”.

A few ways to serve your community is by bringing a meal to someone who is sick, offering to help with household chores if a friend has had surgery, and helping an elderly family member decorate for the holidays. Helping others gives us a purpose and for that, I am thankful and you should be too!

This Thanksgiving season is a time to reflect on all the gifts we’ve been given. Some gifts are easy to recognize and others require us to take a deeper look. If you’re in the midst of hopelessness this season, I hope this encourages you by reminding you that you are not alone. It’s never too late to start shifting your mindset, learning how to surrender and to serve your community!

HOPE IN THE MIDST OF TROUBLE

Menopause and Oral Health

Ladies, we all know that menopause can cause many unexpected things to happen to our bodies. With the drop in estrogen, we all have heard and possibly even experienced the dreaded hot flashes, night sweats and expanding waistline, but did you know that menopause can also impact oral health in several ways?

With the drop in estrogen levels during menopause, this can lead to painful gums, sensitive teeth, receding gum line, tooth decay, and burning mouth syndrome, among other things. And due to this sudden shift in hormones, we can experience dry mouth, which in turn can increase the likelihood of gum inflammation and even periodontal disease. This was a symptom of menopause that caught me by surprise. I actually found myself in the grocery aisle searching for remedies for dry mouth.

But not to fear, a change in habits like limiting alcohol intake and sugary foods, along with regularly scheduled dentist visits can lessen our chances of menopause

negatively affecting our teeth and oral health. In addition to the at-home remedies, I found my biggest source of information and comfort came directly from talking to my dentist. Delta Dental's 2024 Oral Health and Menopause Survey says 84% of dentists are comfortable discussing menopause and oral health but 53% of dentists prefer not to discuss it unless the patients bring it up first. This tells us that most dentists are willing to talk about menopause but are hesitant to bring it up. While it was certainly a bit awkward brooching the subject with my male dentist, I found a quick template that helped me feel more relaxed covering the topic of oral health and menopause, and it was super easy - cut, paste, fill in a few details and hit "Send." Click here to get the email template created by Delta Dental that I used so you can get the conversation started and help normalize this topic,

Menopause and Oral Health
