The blog is called "Granny Coder" and it is subtitled "iPhone games programming from unusual perspective".

I love that her first post is titled: "Dear kids, welcome to my blog".

Here is a bit from her blog:

I have one secret that practically nobody (except my family) knows about - I am Apple enthusiast, especially i love Mac and iPhone. By the way, it was my passion for Apple what persuade me to start with this blog.

Some time ago, I got myself to programming. Ta-dah! Yes, your eyes and ears are working right, I hope, my dear. I remeber that moment like it was yesterday - my youngest grandson Michal (I have 5 grandchildren - 3 boys and 2 girls) bought me an iPhone. It was like little magic when I saw it for the first time. Well, I had mobile phones before of course, but this was something I coudn't explain - there was everything moving, everything was shiny and clean (like in my kitchen - I think every good housewife should have her kitchen clean!) and mostly I didn't need to use my glasses when I was working with it. This little iPhone thing really thrilled me! And it was so close to start my big passion for iPhone. When I saw all the cool applications and heard stories about talented little kids programming games for iPhone, I said: "Marie, if little kids can learn this you can too!" As a developer you can also check your App's ranking and also any reviews you may received.

Also, the thing I like the most is that I receive an email every night with the previous day's sales data. No need for me to log in manually every day. That's a great feature.

The hardest part about the whole process is supplying your iTunes log-in details so they can connect to your account and retrieve your app's information, but they do specify that security is a high priority.

Click here to go to the appFigures site.

Here is some info from the site:

What is appFigures?
As iPhone developers we didn't like the way reports are displayed in iTunes Connect. We wanted to see totals, amounts, and more than the past seven days. So we created appFigures and opened it to all other iPhone developers to enjoy.

appFigures is a utility application by Fileitup Media that lets iPhone application developers view their downloads, updates, and profits using interactive charts and browsable data that's easy to view and understand.

How does appFigures work?
appFigures imports reads the text-file reports that Apple provides developers through iTunes Connet and transforms them into structured data. Reports can be uploaded manually, by syncing with iTunes Connect, or automatically on a daily schedule using Auto Import.

What kind of files can be imported?
appFigures can import daily and weekly reports download reports from iTunes Connect. Files can be imported automatically, by syncing with iTunes Connect on-demand, or by uploading them from your computer.

Is my data secure?
Yes. We take security seriously and take multiple measure to make sure it is protected. We encrypt all private information and protect all of your data on our own secure servers. We restrict access to your information so no one other than you can view your reports, not even us.

DIY Concrete Calculator - New iPhone App

Here is a new app that I have created for the DIY Handyman, and it is also handy for the professional trades person.

DIY Concrete is a handy calculator to help work out the volume and pricing of your concrete projects. Dave is co-author of the book "Beginning iPhone Development - Exploring the iPhone SDK".

This has to be one of the most interesting Press Releases out there promoting an iPhone Application. The press release is for the app Listmonger by Inspiretis.

Here is the press release in full:

ListMonger for iPhone Surpasses Annual Sales Goal, Turns Profit of
Over $6 in First Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 28, 2009

CHICAGO, Illinois - Inspiretis today announced that first-week sales
of ListMonger, a powerful yet easy-to-use list-making application for
iPhone and iPod touch, have wildly exceeded all internal sales goals,
covered all fiscal development costs, and delivered a profit of $6.86
in just seven days. “ListMonger has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone
and iPod touch users around the world,” said Paul Spire, Inspiretis
founder and president. “I’d sincerely like to thank my customers for
giving ListMonger a try and for helping Inspiretis reach this
astonishing milestone in just one week.”

International sales account for 25% of ListMonger’s 69 first-week
purchases, proving that passion for nested lists, robust sorting
options, and flexible insertion points, like love, knows no borders.
“At the current pace,” added Spire, “every 8,765.2 seconds someone
somewhere in the world purchases and downloads a copy of ListMonger. I
couldn’t be more thrilled.”

ListMonger offers:

- Multi-nested / hierarchical lists
- Flexible sorting
- Toggling column views
- Flexible insertion point for new items
- Robust flagging and checking
- Auto date stamping of checked items
- 10 fields, including 1 used-labeled field
- Send lists via email
- Thoughtful design

ListMonger was conceived in November 2008 by Spire, who last honed his
programming skills in the 6th grade (30 years ago) when his junior
high school received it’s very first personal computer (an Apple II,
natch). Spire’s fiscal outlay to re-launch his programming interests
and to develop ListMonger included:

Programming in Objective C by Stephan Kochan, $29.69*
The iPhone Developers Cookbook by Erica Sudan, $25.19*
Beginning iPhone Development by Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche,
$26.39*
Apple iPhone Developer Program Registration, $99.00

Total fiscal investment = $180.27
Inspiretis’ portion of first week’s sales revenue = $187.13
Profit = $6.86

“In the face of worldwide economic crisis, Inspiretis’ strategy will
be to invest in the future and to innovate its way out of the current
downturn,” said Spire. To this end, Inspiretis plans to reinvest 100%
of its stunning week-1 profit into future ListMonger development. “I
hope that users find the features delivered in ListMonger version 1.0
to be useful and well-implemented,” Spire said. “Furthermore, I want
to assure current and potential future customers that ListMonger is in
active development, and much more is yet to come.”

Pricing & Availability
ListMonger is available for purchase for $3.99 on the iPhone App Store
at:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312259526&mt=8

Additional Information
For additional information about ListMonger, including screenshots, a
demo video, and more, please visit http://www.inspiretis.com

Press Release
http://www.inspiretis.com/Main/News_Blog/Entries/2009/4/28_Press_Release__ListMonger_Turns_a_Profit.html

Contact
inspiretis@me.com

*Reflects actual purchase price from a major, online retailer. With your purchase you also receive 2 bonus eBooks "Interviews with the Best" and "How to Successfully Promote Your App".

Carla's story is an interesting one and her books should help give some direction to the people who have an idea for an app but don't know where to start.

The one thing I don't like on her site is the large line of text that reads " Download to join the iPhone gold rush!". I think the gold rush is over, and every day there are a lot more apps to compete with on the App Store. But with the right idea, great design and solid marketing... who knows.

Click here to go to the book site for more info and to buy the book.

iPhone SDK 3.0 beta 4 Released.

Apple has released beta version 4 of the iPhone 3.0 SDK.

Here is the Read Me Before Downloading info from the Developer's site. There is a maximum amount of 50 codes per application. Keep in mind that you do not need to create all 50 codes at once, as they expire after 28 days.

After sending the code to your reviewer (or friend / family member) they need to redeem the code at the iTunes store. On the right hand side of the iTunes Home Page, under the Quick Links section there is the "Redeem" link. After going through this a few times, I began writing notes to myself, which eventually become a rather lengthy checklist.

   * The list is not necessarily the shortest path to create a distribution.

   * A few redundant steps are listed, mostly done as a sanity check to ensure nothing was missed.

   * This list will be helpful primarily to those who are about to adventure upon their first deployment.

Click here to go to John's site and download the pdf.

iPhone App Development Flowchart

William Taysom from Cubicle Muses has posted a fantastic flowchart showing the steps involved in creating iPhone Applications. Applications targeting iPhone OS releases prior to 3.0 beta cannot be tested in this seed.

    * iPhone SDK for iPhone 3.0 beta is for development purposes only. This software should only be installed on devices dedicated exclusively for iPhone 3.0 beta application development.

    * Devices updated to iPhone 3.0 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iPhone OS . Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iPhone OS 3.0 software.

    * iPhone SDK for iPhone 3.0 can not be used for submitting iPhone OS 2.2.1 applications to the App Store.

Developers can log in to developer.apple.com/iphone for more info and to begin downloading the latest build.

Xcode Unexpected error (0xE8000001) - Simple Solution

I just had a problem trying to upload/test my iPhone app from Xcode onto my iPhone. (make sure you change the "Your Name" text to your actual name).

defaults write com.apple.Xcode PBXCustomTemplateMacroDefinitions ' { "ORGANIZATIONNAME" = "Your Name"; } '

Press Enter and that is it. One of the most common requests from our users was the ability to exchange data over the Internet. Greg Robbins of Google's Mac team suggested that the Google Docs API might be useful, so I jumped in and took a look.

This turned out to be a great way to give our users access to free Internet storage, letting them back up their data and share it across multiple devices. To return the favor, I'd like to share my experience: the learning process, getting the code working on the iPhone, and how I found what I needed from what Google generously provides.

Click here to read the whole post.
