The Blu-rays obviously used the Japanese title, and I didn't want to upscale the title frames from the DVDs, so I have named the episode with the American title in the filename. Just ignore the title in the episode or rename the file. Whatever melts your butter.

Roger is hired by Paradigm Power Management to go to the Electric City and negotiate with the locals the reactivation of the hydroelectric power plant. However, the people there claim a god lives in the water, as Roger meets an old scientist living as a hermit, and finds that the god may not be quite what it seems...

A small note about the framing of this episode: I don't know why, but the episode has a black bar on the left side thought most of the episode (seen in the pictures above), but not all of it (such as some of the fight scenes around 17:20). I confirmed the DVDs have this same black bar, so I left the bar as is.

A Few Notes About Big O

So I wanted to wait until I was preparing Episode 3 to mention these, but there are a few things I needed to mention with regard to the Big O releases.

Release Plans: I'm trying out something new that, if successful, will probably form my new releases plans going forward. I'm treating February as "The 28 Days of Big O in 26 Days", which is to say that I plan to release one episode per day for the majority of the month. Because of the way I've done this, I've built up a buffer of about 5-6 episodes ahead of what has been released. This will let me keep a steady release schedule without feeling too pressured to get stuff out, and leaving me time to fix mistakes if I spot a problem before release. If this works out, the plan going forward will be to alternate months for releases, using the "off" months to step away from releases to do other stuff, as well as give me prep time for whatever the next series will be. Planetes will be exempt from this as I intend to finish that as soon as Big O is done, and may end up releasing simultaneously with the last episodes of Big O. After that, I'll look at how I want to proceed. This will probably get more detail in a new post once Big O and Planetes are finished/clone to finishing.

720p Releases: These will be releasing via torrent only due to the current plan to discontinue DDLs. I'll be encoding these directly from the source instead of the re-encodes of the 1080p versions. What that means is that they will take anywhere from a few days to a week before I get them released as I have to use my work PC to encode them, and then bring them home to assemble into the episodes. So 720p versions will be coming, there will jut be a slight delay on them so please be patient.

iOS HD Releases UPDATED: ssj2_goha is currently working on these and is trying to get them out within a day or so of release of the 1080p versions. These ARE re-encodes of the 1080p versions, but they are offered in 720p, so for those of you who want 720p versions sooner, these are an option. UPDATE - The concerns we had about the variable frame rates were confirmed not to be an issue, so the releases for iOS are all good. Also, ssj2 will be moving at the end of the month, but since I'm working ahead, he should be able to have the iOS encodes done and posted even while driving across the country.

OP Credits: This is the one that, depending on your perspective, you will either be happy with, be pissed about, or for most people, you simply won't care. As a fan of Big O since it's original airing, I've always watched Big O with the original OP that ripped off Queen's "Flash Gordon" theme song. In 2007, for the Japanese rebroadcast, a new OP theme was created along with new visuals. I personally can't stand the new OP, which is unfortunately what the BD release used. Because of this, I made the decision to upscale the DVD OP for these releases. I wanted to be upfront about the fact that I did this, since it's not something I would normally do.

Audio Replacement: One part of this only affects one episode (Episode 7), and it is related to the above point. Episode 7 used the OP theme as the soundtrack to part of the mecha battle, and as such, was replaced with the new OP theme in 2007. As I said before, I don't care for the new OP, so this episode will have audio sourced from the R1 DVDs. Because the BDs include the dub audio, I will be doing a FLAC Pack, which will use the unedited audio, so it will feature the 2007 OP theme. I tried to edit the DVD audio into the lossless audio from the BD, but the audio levels made it too difficult to normalize to the audio that came before and after.

FLAC Pack: Due to the loss of MegaUpload and the extra space our current seedbox provider offers over our old host, I've decided that FLAC Packs will still continue, but only as 1-2 sets per series, depending on the series length. These packs will be released when the series is complete as a batch torrent. With regard to Big O, due to the OP replacement, I'll patch in the audio for the old OP, which won't be lossless given that it's sourced from the R1 DVDs, but it's that or no OP music at all.

Season 2 Audio: Big O Season 2 has a 5.1 mix for the dub audio, which will become the primary track when we get to Episode 14, but the surround mix was not put on the BD release for whatever reason. The stereo audio will still be included and will obviously be what is included in the FLAC Pack.

I'll edit in additional information if anything comes to mind, because I can swear I'm forgetting something.

End of DDL Section

Hello everyone, I'm sure you have been keeping up with the news lately but if you haven't, let me sum it up by saying DDL file sharing has more or less completely died. I have lost all control over both my MU and FS accounts and MANY of the current DDL links are offline. Only a random few FS links currently remain active but since my account was disabled, I doubt they will last for much longer.

So to sum this up, there will no longer be any DDL's offered from us, only torrents.

I'm also considering adding download bots to IRC, but that is still up in the air.

Digimon Xros Wars

Ok, so, it was announced over at Xros Raws that we would be scanlating the Xros Wars manga. Here's the deal behind whats going on with that:

omniG is project lead on this one. He will be posting releases for the manga.
Most of the raws will not be from Xros Raws, but they will be a backup source and will be helping with other things.
Most of the scans are new, cleaned up scans (see sample preview below)
omniG is still waiting on materials before getting underway.
A translation is available for the work, and they are looking into a secondary translator to iron out some details.
The preview page has the site address and IRC channel on it but the final releases will NOT have these URLs on them.
I will be tweeting release announcements just like I do with new episode announcements. Other than that, comments/questions/complaints should be directed to IRC or the Xros Raws comments section.
If we think of anything else, it will be edited in here.

As an example, here is a basic scan of the source, which according to omniG, has been printed on Japan's worst toilet paper, and an example of the cleaned up page. This is taken from a special chapter that wasn't in any of the single volumes, and will likely be released as an initial test to iron out any issues.

A Few Odds and Ends

I just wanted to mention a few assorted things that were a bit too long for Twitter but each too short for their own posts.

- Batches. I'm WAAAAY behind on batches for the Patlabor Original Series OVA, MS IGLOO, and especially Zegapain. I'm going to be working on encoding all the bits of bonus material for these, but I don't think I'll have the time to work on them with any real focus until around Thanksgiving since I'll have a few extra days off. So sit tight and I'll get those done as soon as I can.

- Regarding those batches, since they haven't been released as the final versions, I'm still debating if I should change the subs to match the new style on the Planetes release. I'll be putting a poll up in a few days to get feedback on that, so please vote.

- How about mobile encodes? As a lot of people are aware, HP recently liquidated their stock of their Touchpad tablet. Myself and at least two of our staff that I know of got one, and so I've been experimenting with playing back our encodes on it. Here's what I have found:

MKVs work using Kalemsoft Media Player ($6 on their site if they ever fix their PayPal, $7 from the webOS catalog but updates are slower)
Subtitles, including .ASS subs like we use, now work as of the latest build. Custom fonts and effects do not work, and there are some issues with multiple lines not all appearing (such as secondary dialog).
1080p encodes will play if subs are not enabled and your Touchpad is overclocked to 1.5GHz. Since the screen on the thing is only 720p, this is kind of pointless unless you want to watch the dub with no need to download the 720p file as well.
10-bit files don't work, but since we haven't gone 10-bit for anything, this is a non-issue.

- Digimon Xros Wars manga. See the post after this one for more details.

- Redline. This movie is awesome. If you haven't watched it, you are missing out. Manga has licensed it and is dubbing it, with a BD release set for January 17th, 2012. This is one of those anime films thatis capable of breaking out of that "anime niche" and could go mainstream if given the chance. Seriously. It's that good. I really urge everyone to check out the fansubs and then pick up a copy of the BD when it releases. Amazon or TRSI have it up for preorder.
