HUNT- The Story Inn

Sunday (July 27th) we packed up, and drove up to Nashville, IN. (Just east of Bloomington, In., in Brown County.) There we stayed at the Haunted Story Inn. I HIGHLY recommend it if you want a little out-of-the-way bed-and-breakfast, but still near enough to drive for all kinds of shopping and Brown County activities. They have kept all of the exterior 'old-tyme' decor, but the interior accommodations are excellent! They also have a famous 5-star restaurant on the ground floor. I know it doesn't look like it from the outside, but this is "fine dining" at some of it's best. We had scallops the size of hockey pucks! Most of the food they serve (except for the seafood and tropical fruits) are either grown in their own huge botanical gardens out back, or bought locally- INCLUDING the bison and chicken eggs!

As for being haunted- Kim and I stayed in the "Blue Lady" room, supposedly the room with the most activity from several of the ghosts in the area. Honestly, we didn't get bad feelings, nor did we see anything (altho the camera did- pics below) the entire time- HOWEVER, something strange did happen on our second day. We came back from an early dinner in Nashville, and decided to take a nap before we woke up and tried to contact the "Blue Lady" to see if anything would happen. Suddenly, a loud CLICK-CLACK came from inside our room while we were napping on the bed- it startled both of us awake. For the next half-hour I went around the room, rapping and dropping items to try and reproduce the sound we heard. Finally I hit on it- In the room, there is an old vanity with a huge mirror on it. The vanity has a glass top to it. On the glass top (for decor) they have an old time silver hairbrush and hand mirror set lying there. When i picked up the hairbrush and dropped it back on the glass from the height of about a half-inch, i got the exact noise we heard! (Interestingly the hand mirror when dropped made a different sound). I shook the vanity to see if it was wobbly, but no- it was very sturdy. The glass top itself wasn't loose either. I even tried jumping on the floor near it- but nothing happened. Only when I picked up the hairbrush about a half- inch and dropped it did I get the sound. Nashville was beautiful, and it was fun shopping and all, but the haunted Story Inn is what I'll remember most!

The following sequence of pictures was taken by myself- NO flash, and the camera was set on a tabletop to minimise movement. As for what the black mass is- I cant explain. I didn't see anything with my naked eyes, but at the time i 'felt' something in the room- that's why i started taking the pics. Let me know what you think...

EVIDENCE- Vortex

Vortices & "ectoplasm" are similar to orbs: they are an easily explainable, and duplicated, camera effect. I'd say about 99% of Vortices are due to the camera being set on "night exposure", or on a slower shutter speed- I'll show example photos and how it's done below.
However, "ectoplasm" photos ARE just a vapor in the air due to moisture, fog, smoke, breath, aerosol spray, a fine powder, even plant spoors (step on a puffball mushroom, you'll see what I mean). Whether the "ectoplasm" pics are paranormal or not can never be determined due to the millions of possible natural environmental and atmospheric phenomena that will all resemble the same thing on a photo. And the first rule of investigation is- if it can't be proven that it's NOT something natural, you have to THROW IT OUT. "Ectoplasm" photos should not be taken as proof, they should be viewed in the same category as "personal experiences". Meaning, interesting, but not verifiable, and in the long run, just a good story.

Vortices, however, are mostly produced on film in one of three ways.

1. The camera operator snaps a photo in a darkened area (with OR without flash). during the microseconds that the shutter is open, the camera operator is moving the camera. No matter how good you think you are, you are human, and can NOT hold the camera absolutely still. While the shutter is open, an external light source (i.e.- porch light, flashlight, headlight, small led light, tiny light on an appliance) will appear to leave "streaks" on the final image -due to the fact that light moves faster than the shutter- therefore, the camera operators shakiness leads to the final photo of a "vortex".

2.This explanation includes the orb-like vortex phenomena of "solid" vortexes- They are the reflected flash off of a camera strap, human hair, finger, string, bug, -basically ANY solid object, moving or stationary- that is too far inside the camera's focal length.

3. The camera IS perfectly still (i.e.- on a tripod on stable ground that can't vibrate, and the camera is on automatic or remote timer, so there is NO human contact at the time that the photo is taken), and the external light source (anything emitting light) is moving at a rapid rate past the camera. This is the explanation that most ghost hunters would like to believe happened in their photo. However, most of them don't use an automatic timer and tripod to get vortex pics. And even if so- that still doesn't prove that the moving light source was paranormal. Any moving light source BEHIND the camera can reflect off of a surface in front of the stable camera, causing a Vortex.NOTE: Bi-pods and Mono-pods help, but do NOT render the camera perfectly still. therefore, those photos should be included in explanation #1.

COMMON VORTEX EXAMPLE PHOTOS and which above explanation they fit in:

Explanation #1- stationary light in distance. Camera on night setting with flash. The flash illuminates the ground only for a fraction of a second, causing it to look like a stationary photo. After the flash, the shutter on night setting is STILL OPEN, picking up the movement of the camera by 'streaking' the stationary light source in the distance.

Explanation #1- same reason as the picture above, except here we have FOUR external light sources, and TWO reflected-flash sources. Notice the external sources have the same streak pattern, while reflected ones are random. this is due to the fact that the camera movement is duplicated by external light sources (they don't shut off), while the reflected flash streaks are only illuminated for a fraction of the camera's movement. Also notice the dust orbs. See the EVIDENCE-Orbs section in the archive for more info on them.

Explanation #1- This time, the vortex is due to either a stationary light source BEHIND the camera, or the flash itself. Notice the bug-spray can. It's warning label has the same pattern on it as the "streak". This photo is most likely the reflective, metallic can and slow shutter speed combined with a turning movement of the camera operator.

Explanation #2- Camera operator's body part- most likely a finger.

Explanation #2- Camera operator's hair. Notice the "rings" in the vortex. These are made by the scales on the human hair (or even a textured camera strap) that reflects the light in a pattern. Also, note that "hair" vortex photos don't necessarily have to be the camera operator's fault. Any dog or cat fuzz drifting by at the time of the picture will give the same result.

Explanation #2- This is a non-textured camera strap. Notice the "shadow" of the vortex on the wall. If vortexes supposedly are light anomalies, why do they cast a shadow? Well, the NON-paranormal ones do!

Explanation #2- Bug flying by the camera. Notice the regular pattern of the wings as they flap. There was no flash in this picture (this is a still-frame of a video), HOWEVER, it is an I-R camera. IR constantly illuminates. Think of it like a flash that never shuts off, that your normal human eye can not see. As the bug travels quicker than the shutter (but slower than IR light), it's illuminated the entire way it flies, leaving a bumpy streak.

"Ectoplasm". It's an early spring morning (notice no leaves on the trees but daffodils are up) and still cool outside. Most likely camera operators breath.

More "ectoplasm". Again, most likely breath. See the partially melted snow throughout the junipers and mulch? Means it's still cold out (early or late winter).
NOTE- if it feels warmer to you outside, and you swear you cant "see your breath" because it wasn't cold enough, that DOES NOT mean that the camera flash will not pick up the water vapor from your breath! Breath you 'can't see' with your eyes STILL CAN BE PHOTOGRAPHED.

EVIDENCE- Orbs

Ok- Now onto a pet peeve of mine: Orbs.
I have seen real 'orb' photos and video. However, People HAVE to start realising that orbs are like the UFO phenomena in one respect- 99% of orb photos are natural and explainable. Being an experienced photographer, I can create (and recreate) most orb photos that are out there.

If I get a hold of a few of the true orb pictures, I will post them below. In the meantime, here's a good list of NON-orbs and their photos. I will only say I got the following photos from a Google Image Search. I am not here to discredit any fellow paranormal researchers- merely to point out that people are often easily mistaken.

#1. DUST ORBS:

Seen in 75% of "orb" photos. The dust is either a- ON the lens of the camera, or b- freefloating a few inches to feet directly in front of the camera. The photographer is usually taking a picture of something more distant than the dust, so the focal point of the picture is past where the dust is. When the flash, or even strong ambient light, reflects off of the dust back to the camera, it creates the "orb" because the dust is out of focus.

#2. PARTICULATE ORBS:

These orbs are caused by airborne contaminates (i.e., a disbursed powdered substance, plant pollen, photographer's dandruff, etc..). The particles that make up these orbs are a little bigger and denser than dust, so you don't quite get all of the 'translucent' quality of dust orbs. They are 'made' the same way dust orbs are- out of focus reflected particles.

#3. PRECIPITATION ORBS:

Same as #2, except caused by rain, snow, heavy mist, someone sneezing, etc... Basically, droplets (or crystals) of water in the air.

#4. REFRACTED ORBS:

These orbs are a little more rare at night, however, nonetheless are still explainable. Mostly attributed to 'lens flare', these orbs are created when concentrated light enters the camera, and is slightly refracted by the curvature of the lens on the camera. This type of orb most always has color to it. NOTE- the light causing the orb doesn't necessarily have to be from an external source- the camera flash itself, having bounced off of a metal, crystal, or polished surface ANYWHERE in the room could possibly reflect back and hit the camera's lens correctly to cause this effect.

#5. INSECT ORBS:

These are formed much the same way particulate orbs are formed- out of focus and reflected. however, the culprit is usually a bug. These orbs can be a color (depending on the insect), but most are irregularly shaped, blurry, and sometime leave movement "streaks" of light. NOTE- Bugs also come in swarms, so you could get just one bug orb in a photo, or hundreds, or anywhere inbetween.

#6. FACE / IMAGE ORBS:

These are orbs of ANY of the types above, that once you increase them digitally, you see images, faces, or items "in" the orb itself. This is due to digital image software, and it's called Morie Patterning. When the computer expands (enlarges) the image, it "fills in" the gaps itself with it's 'best guess' on what size, shape, and color of pixel should fit in the gap. The human brain and eye is trained for pattern recognition (looking for faces or objects in patterns- such as when you "see" an elephant "in the clouds"). When you view a blobby colorful pattern, your eyes and brain 'create' a recognition of something within, in order for you to more easily classify something you see. These types of orbs are due to computer enhancement, as well as good 'ol human genetics.

There are at least 3 or 4 other types of "common orb photos", but are more rare on the web. I will post them here when I get ahold of them, as well as a few rare REAL orb photos.

REMEMBER- you can have anywhere from ONE orb from one of the types above in your photo, to a mix of ALL of the types, and hundreds of orbs. Please look carefully at your environment, and study your photo.

NOTE-If you're unsure if the pic you are taking in a darkened area is a orb or not- TURN OFF YOUR FLASH, AND RETAKE THE PICTURES. If you still get orbs on a black or super-dark photo, then it's a real orb. Orbs emit their OWN light, and electricity arcs and balls do NOT reflect a flash anyways. If you're using a flash, 99% chance its NOT an orb!!

CREATURE- Chupacabara

Apparently this is the week for finding mythic beasts. Someone caught something that someone called a chupacabara ("goat-sucker"). Again, I'm taking this with a grain of salt.
The pic above is from a couple of years ago when someone in Texas found one. The video below is of the recent find.

CREATURE- Bigfoot

Apparently, Someone has discovered a dead Bigfoot. I'm taking this one with a grain of salt, until after the upcoming press conference and when the scientific community finishes all of it's testing.

I am looking for REAL evidence, -not hoaxes, humor sites, or photo-edits. I have 20+ years of digital photo editing and photography experience, and will spot a fake or "iffy" pics easy.
