Victoriana

Primary Six Room 17 have been learning about the Victorians. We are creating a rich house corner in our classroom. In order to do this authentically, we have studied William Morris wallpaper patterns and created some of our own in the same style.

We have learned all about Queen Victoria and enjoyed researching facts about her life. We are looking forward to learning lots of new things and posting our hard work on the blog.

Mad Scientists!!

Primary six enjoyed setting up and carrying out fair experiments. They were using a process called chromatography to separate inks. This process involved placing ink onto filter paper and dipping the end of the filter paper into water. We then observed how long each ink took to spread out into the colours that make it. We also recorded the different colours that made up one type of ink.

Here is a picture of the boys enjoying making observations and recording their results in a table.
We really enjoyed this experiment and look forward to conducting more before the end of term.

Pagoda Mania!!!

Primary Six Room 17, have been busy, busy, busy!! They have finished their pagodas and created some fantastic examples. They made these using art straws, lollipop sticks, card and sellotape. Here are some of the examples of the work they created.

This group even added a ramp to enter their pagoda.

Another lovely example of a pagoda. The boys in this group were incredibly enthusiastic and really enjoyed having the experience of designing and building something using ideas that were all their own. Well done primary six!!!

Fantastic Fans

Primary 6 Room 12 have decorated these beautiful Japanese style fans using inks and fine paint brushes.

We also made some great 3D pumpkin decorations that were used to decorate the hall for the Halloween disco. We have taken them home to decorate our houses for Sunday night.

Super Science

In Primary 6 Room 12 we have been doing some Kitchen Chemistry! We have been separating dyes in water using a process called Chromatography. This is what scientists call the process of separating a mixture into different parts. This is what did:

First we put a small dot of marker pen onto some coffee filter paper
We measured out 50ml of water into a plastic cup
Then we placed the paper in a little water and watched the colour separate out.
We then recorded our findings

The filter paper was then laid out to dry so that we could stick them into our booklets and record our findings. The first strip was purple, the second was green and the third in this row is red, a primary colour, so there was no separation.

Topic and Language
Primary 6 have had a really good first term. We thoroughly enjoyed our topic on Japan and have learnt lots of interesting and unusual things. This term both classes are going to be making a class book that we will have published through the blurb.com website. Everyone will have the opportunity to write, edit and re-draft their own piece of writing that will be added to the book. First things first we need to choose a genre...

General
Primary 4-7 are getting ready to put on this years Christmas Concert. There will be auditions on the 2nd of November for those that would like speaking parts. Everyone will also be involved in learning songs, creating props and designing the set for the show.

We would also like to add that some of the work that the children completed on their Japan topic has been sent to the Japanese Consulate in Edinburgh to be displayed. We are very proud of this.

Homework
Children are encouraged to use their Home Learning Log regularly and to keep up to date with the tasks that have been set. They are also reminded to bring in weekly maths, reading and spelling homework when it is due.

In Room 12 we have been working very hard recently to finish our 3D Pagoda models. We used a variety of materials incuding art straws, lollipop sticks, card and straws. We planned our design and measured each level carefully. We all worked well in our little groups and communicated our ideas to each other. We are absolutely delighted with how well they have turned.

We also drew some observation line drawings of a Pagoda temple using fine line black pens. We tried to get our pictures to look 3 dimensional. Some of us found this alittle tricky but, with alot of hard work, we are very proud with how well the pictures have turned out.

Topic Art and Technology

Primary six room seventeen have been very busy so far this term. We have enjoyed creating Tokyo cityscape pictures shown below.

We have also created carp streamers which are usually displyed in Japan to celebrate the children's festival. They really brighten up our classroom and everyone really enjoyed making them.

Don't they look lovely? We are very proud of the amount of work we put in to them. We are now concentrating on the design and construction of a type of Japanese temple called a pagoda. Here are some photos of us hard at work on our pagodas.

Kung Fu Fighting

On Friday Primary 6 Room 12 put on an outstanding blockbusting assembly on Japan! There was singing, dancing and a giant sumo wrestler. All of our parents came along and thought it was fabulous - thanks for all of their support on the day!

Primary 6 have made a fantastic start to the new school year. They are really enjoying learning all about the culture, art and lifestyle in Japan.
In R.M.E. they will be studying Buddhism and Shintoism, which are the two largest religions in Japan.
P.E. P6 Rm 17 will have P.E. on a Monday and Wednesday. P6 Rm 12 will have P.E. on a Monday and Tuesday.
Health and Wellbeing The P6s will be continually working on achieving the school's values of Friendship, Honesty and Respect. They will also be learning about internet safety and their local community.
Homework P6 will have weekly maths and language homework as well as a 'Home Learning Log' which is crammed full of extra and exciting home learning tasks.
Book Detectives The P6s will be developing their reading skills and enjoyment of reading through the use of a set of Book Detective reading skills.

Photography Club

Mr M (our teacher) has started up a P6 photography club, in which we capture interesting photos and edit them on programs like picnik, and fotoflexer. One of the pictures we made was Jamie’s (Mr. Ms baby’s) head on Queen Victoria’s body! Another of the things we do in the photography club is: we look at old photos on the computer and discuss the backgrounds of them, the foregrounds of them, the colours and textures and lots of things like that.
There are two groups in the photography club: group 1 and group 2. Different groups come at different times, lunchtime and after school, according to the date it is on. The photography club is a place to have fun but still be learning.
I made a fotoflexer picture of David Tennant’s head on a Scotty’s body and Simon Cowell’s head on Cheryl Cole’s body (hee hee hee!) Also someone made one of Simon Cowell’s head on Sherlock Holmes’ body (HA!) We also use picnik in the photography club and people can distort photos (stretch them), add clip art and just play around in general and then save them as jpegs! I find the photography club very interesting and I’m sure everyone else does too because it is so, so fun.

Holi Weaving

We also did weaving that the Victorians would have done, but we did it with special colours. They were bright colours that the Victorians would not have had, and we used them to symbolise the Indian Festival of Holi, where lots of bright coloured powders and paints are thrown around. We watched a short clip from an Indian film as well, because Holi was around the same time as we were doing the weaving. To start off with, we chose either a circle or a rectangular shaped loom to do our weaving on, and then we chose some bright coloured wool. The weaving was really fun and very simple once you started and you knew how to do it. All we had to do was to thread the wool through the eye of the needle then weave the needle over and under the threads on the loom. Once we had gone over and under a few times we pulled the thread through and left a little tail at the end of the wool. Then we continued weaving the wool until we had done a few lines and then we changed our colour and kept doing that till we had filled up the loom.

Cross stitching

In art we have been doing cross-stitching and weaving for our Victorians topic. First of all we learned how to cross-stitch by making a little cross in a piece of material with some string and a needle. Mr M taught us how to do it and then we tried it ourselves. We chose coloured string and a colour of material for our background and then we started. It was quite hard at first but once you started it was really fun. Most of our class cross-stitched their name and a little design next to it. Once we had finished, we gave it to Mr M and he stuck it onto a piece of card then displayed it on the wall outside the classroom.

Using archive clips for our Victorian project

In class we are making films about what we do in the play ground one group is doing modern games, one group is doing playground games and one group is doing Victorian games. First we watched some films on Scotland on Screen about what children played in the street. Then we split into our groups and made story boards for our film. The Victorian group got to dress in Victorian clothes while the other groups dressed in their normal clothes! We had to stay inside for a while until the other group came back in which was quite a while. Then we went out to film it ours had quite a few mistakes but we got there in the end. We had to choose different toys to play with I chose the whip and peerie which is a Victorian equivalent of a spinning top other people chose girdle and cleek [type of hula hoop], skipping ropes, marbles and hopscotch. In other groups people chose more modern things like Nintendos or skate boards. People in playground games chose games like 44[a game that is a bit like tig] e.c.t.My favourite part was working the camera!!! Now our group has three scenes left because we had quite a short time filming.

Victorian School Toys

Seeing that our topic is the Victorians, We have been trying out lots of different classical school toys. As a class once every week we go outside to play with them, and we all really enjoy them. Here are some examples of the toys we have: Gird and cleek, the whip and peerie, the Diablo, the ball and cup, a music box and a few other things like that.
Together, as a class, we are comparing toys we use these days, like skate boards and consoles, with the toys the Victorian children used to play with! Actually most people like playing with the old Victorian toys! In the Victorian times the toys the rich children used, inside, were things like rocking horses, and tin soldiers. So over all our class really enjoy playing with the toys they used, back in the Victorian times!

Joan Eardley's Street Children

We also have been doing Joan Eardley art work. Joan Eardley was also very famous, she saw the children playing around the muddy alleyways between tenements and 10 story flats, in horrible condition. She loved the expressions on their faces, even though they were playing in horrid conditions because they were playing with amazing attitude and making great use of the limited things they had! As a result of her liking to these young children she took them one by one, outside, to let them sit down, to draw them, so she could capture the weird and wonderful expressions on their faces.
We, as a class, tried making our own Joan Eardley style pastel and charcoal pictures. Some of them came out brilliant and so we were very, very proud of them.

Wallpaper designs inspired by William Morris

This year we have been making lots of interesting pieces of art, some linking our Victorian topic and some not. In class we have been concentrating on lots of different artists like Joan Eardley and William Morris. William Morris was a famous Victorian artist who made and designed wallpaper, table cloths and all things like that. He especially liked to use floral designs for his art work and sometimes birds, and other small animals. We have tried out some of our own floral designs to make wallpaper, some of us drew, and coloured in, plants and flowers weaving through plant racks or just by themselves and some of us drew, and coloured in, leaves and flowers being linked with vines and some flies, like dragon flies and bugs clinging onto the vines or plants.

CROSS COUNTRY

Our Cross Country runners took part in the final competition of the
Dunbartonshire Schools Cross Country League on Saturday at
Kirkintilloch. Every one of the runners gave 100% and the results were
fantastic.

The P5/6 girls team finished in 1st place
winning gold medals.

Cross Country Winning Results

Once again our Cross Country runners have done us proud. In very
difficult slushy and icy conditions at Mugdock they managed to win 16
medals.
This
is the biggest haul of medals so far for Bearsden Primary.
Congratulations to all the pupils who took part. The P6 results are as

Unfortunately these were the only two P6 boys running, so they did not
