With December less than two months away, it is one the most exciting times in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic nation, whose celebration of Christmas brings many Filipino diaspora wonderful memories of “home.” Included in that is the parol, a five-point star-lantern symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem, which lead the Three Kings to the infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is a Filipino symbol of their strong faith as Christians and fond memories of the family making a parol each Christmas.

PASACAT Executive Director, Anamaria Labao Cabato shared, “Growing up, I remember my mom re-papering the parol every Christmas, with the trimming on the outline of the star and the beautiful tassels.” Cabato continued, “Mom said that they used to place candles in the parols, but often times caused fires.” Filipino’s now use the intricately capiz shell parols which provides a kaleidoscope of lights in different patterns and styles.

PASACAT hopes to inspire and encourage families to rekindle the tradition with Parol Making Workshops and a Parol Competition to be held at the 14th Annual Philippine Lantern Festival on December 3, 100 PM to 500 PM at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center’s Celebration Hall. The winners will be announced at the end of the Parol Festival.

Free workshops are also be conducted by the House of the Philippines on Saturday, November 19, 10 am – 1 pm at the Hall of Nations, Balboa Park and on Wednesday, November 30, 4 pm – 6 pm at Skyline Hills Library, 480 South Meadowbrook Drive, San Diego.

Tickets to the Parol Festival are $12.00 for General Admission and $8.00 for students and seniors.

PASACAT is a non-profit cultural arts organization founded in 1970. The Parol Philippine Lantern Festival is funded in part by the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, San Diego County Community Enhancement Fund and the City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture.

Traditional Philippine dance and songs are taught to the children as a way of imparting the rich culture of the 7,100 island Republic. Dances include the bird dance Kadal Blila from the mountain regions of Mindanao, Paso Doble reflecting the Spanish-European influences, the popular Singkil originally a Maranao fan dance which has evolved into one of the most colorful and memorable of Philippine dances.

“I love how I have a second family to come to at PASACAT” said Kelsey Sinsay, a dancer for the past 12 years. “It’s also one of the first places where I learned about Filipino culture.”

Family is a common theme among the young dancers. Fifteen-year old Alex Abutin, who has been dancing with PASACAT for six years, shared, “I like how when you come more often, you form this bond with every one in PASACAT and become a close family.”

A second family and great food may be what keeps a lot of dancers coming back to PASACAT. However, some things are more simply put. “I like playing drums and dancing,” claims a six year old Miles Batuyong. Although a three-year “veteran” in the group, Batuyong is still one of the youngest dancers in PASACAT.

The featured keynote speaker was the acting Lieutenant Governor of the State of California, Ms. Mona Pasquil. A strong Filipina American, Ms. Pasquil was appointed to the second highest public office in California on November 4, 2009.

PASACAT held two dance workshop sessions at the conference. <a href="http://www.pasacat.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/photo-3.jpg" rel="lightbox[234]" title="PASACAT alumnis attended the conference (L-R): Manuel "Jun" Narvaza, Vice Principal of Montgomery High; Melissa Mationg, daughter of PASACAT alumni, Eva Ricasa; Ana Labao Cabato, PASACAT Executive Director; Eman Manzano, whose eldest son Eric attended the conference. Although there was a lot of exhausted expressions at the end, the students appeared to really enjoy learning the dances. Hopefully, this little taste of Philippine dance will encourage these young men and women to continue to explore the arts.

In the northern region of the Philippines known as Ifugao, entire mountain-sides have been carved into breathtaking terraces for rice harvesting by native farmers. The practice, which has existed for more than an a thousand years, was the result of highly-skilled, yet lightly-equipped indigenous commoners. The vast landscaping in the region has earned the Banaue rice terraces the local title of “eighth wonder of the world” among Filipinos. Also known as the “stairways to the sky,” the rice terraces cover a total surface area over 13,000 miles long!

Because the natural beauty of these ancient developments are continuously threatened by erosion and disappearing native culture, the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Centre has been named a “world heritage site.” This has raised awareness of the rice terraces and brought about some protections sought for historical preservation.
