End of Fiscal Year Stats and New Books!

Pittsburg-Camp County Public Library is anticipating a busy year. Many people are discovering or re-discovering the Public Library. We have issued user cards to 22 new families in the first two weeks. The past year was record-breaking. We counted 75,778 circulation transactions, up 7.54% over last fiscal year. We also issued new user cards to 271 families, up 11.1% over last fiscal year. Six hundred seventy-four people attended six programs and 209 pounds of food was collected for local food pantries.

The Friends of the Pittsburg-Camp County Public Library will host the second annual 5K Fun Run, Walk or Crawl on Saturday, September 26, 2009. The race begins at 8:00 a.m., check in time is 7:30 a.m. Entry fees are $15.00 per person in advance, $20.00 on race day. The race will be held at the City Park, across from Pittsburg High School, 300 Texas Street. First, second and third place awards will be given in each age group. One hundred (100) t-shirts are available at check-in on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pre-registration deadline is Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. at the Pittsburg Camp County Public Library, 613 Quitman Street, Pittsburg, Texas 75686. All proceeds will benefit the Pittsburg Camp County Public Library. The Friends of the Library are a support organization, providing summer programs for children and families and other needs not always addressed in the fiscal budget. This summer more than 600 children and adults attended programs provided through the Friends of the Library organization. Even though I love technology, getting the hang of all these social networking gadgets is not easy. This week’s site gives some tips on Twitter, specifically how to properly ‘retweet’. The art of “retweeting” is best described as taking a twitter message someone else has posted, and rebroadcasting that same message to your followers. When broadcasting this message, you should give credit to the original poster. While retweeting sounds great for the original tweeter (since there is usually a link involved), retweeting can actually benefit you as much or more. The summer programs were a huge success this year! We could not have pulled if off without many great donations and volunteers! Thanks to you all! We have tried not to leave anyone out, but if we somehow did, please forgive us. A total of 674 people attending 6 programs with our highest attendance ever for one show of 212 people. We collected 202 pounds of food for two local food pantries and we are grateful to those who gave. Through your generous donations, the library was able to put together and have drawings for 38 sets of school supplies! Thank you Pittsburg and Camp County!

MAGIC PROGRAM - Thursday, 13th10:30 a.m.

Come to the Luau at the Public Library today (August 6th) at 10:00 a.m. This program will last approximately 45 minutes – one hour and include stories, crafts, snacks and drawings for school supplies. To earn extra chances at the drawing, bring non-perishable food items for the local pantries. Bring your children for a traditional story time.

The public library is busy. It seems we have broken another record in our circulation statistics this past month. We will have official figures a little later. We had a total of 13 waiting list reservations on Monday for the public access computers. Public access computers are in high demand.

The Library will host its next summer program Friday, July 17th at 1:00 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Camp County Extension Office and will include a Cotton Gin Demonstration and Show Animals from 4H participants. Most of this program will be outdoors and we will be in the shade as much as possible. Bring your canned goods for the local food pantry for extra chances to win in the drawing for school supplies. So far we have collected 110 pounds of food donations.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 9th at 1:00 p.m. to see David Slick Jugglers at the public library. The best juggler in Dallas will present his professional stage show. We had our largest crowd ever for our first show, so be sure to come early for the best seats. Public computers will not be available during the performances this year. Mark your calendars for Friday June 19th at 11:00 a.m. The library’s first program of the summer will be Zooniversity, the teaching zoo that comes to you. They will showcase native Texas critters. Even though the space is more open this year after our remodel, be sure to come early for the best seats. Public computers will not be available during the performances this year. I cannot say it enough. Pittsburg is a community of helpful people. Our call to action for story time programs brought in some great ideas, with people attached. It is going to be a wonderful summer for our community.

We have one more call to action. Anyone who can donate small prizes, bottled water, school supplies, restaurant coupons, etc. would be appreciated. One of our story time ideas is to create a small version of the state fair, complete with games. Since money is tight this year for everyone, we thought of giving school supplies as some of the prizes. You do not have to donate a specific number of any of the items, just whatever you can do to help the kids have a great summer and prepare them for the next school year. Please call the library at 903.856.3302 if you are able to donate prizes or refreshments for the summer programs.

We would like to offer the community the opportunity to help local food banks this year. We will offer a drawing for a prize during each of the summer programs. Those attending will receive one entry in the drawing. For each non-perishable item that is donated, there will be an additional entry in the drawing. Our first program is Friday, June 19th at 11:00 a.m.

For the months of June and July, we would like to offer our patrons a way to pay their fines by helping others. For each non-perishable item that is donated, we remove 50 cents from your fine owed to the library. This helps you pay down your fine and help others in the process. We think that is a win-win situation.

If you are a church or other institution in Camp County that provides a food bank for the community, please bring a letter stating that you provide this service, so that we can distribute these items to your organization.
