For game-changing immersion, the Logitech G35 Surround Sound Headset is the first Logitech headset to offer 7.1 surround sound – a perfect complement to the growing number of action games and high-definition movies that support 7.1-channel surround sound.

Immersive Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. Powered by second-generation Dolby Headphone technology, the G35 simulates the complex acoustics of a listening room, creating a detailed, outside-the-head sound field. Plus, with its proprietary ear-enclosing design, the G35 headset greatly reduces ambient noise from interfering with your entertainment, while an adjustable, noise-canceling microphone focuses on your voice and reduces background noise.

Victory never sounded so good. Play with the best.
Features
7.1 Surround Sound Powered by Dolby technology
Delivers a detailed soundfield – hear your enemies before they see you. Dolby Pro Logic II is used in conjunction with Dolby Headphone technology to create an expanded stereo sound for files recorded in traditional format.
3 Swappable Headband Pads
To ensure your headset remains comfortable during long gaming sessions, the G35 headset features three swappable headbands – thin, thick and contoured designs – so you can select the style that fits you best.
3 Customizable G Keys
If you use popular chat clients such as Ventrilo or Team Speak, the G35 headset includes three G-keys on the left earpiece for one-touch command over voice morphing. If you want to sound like your World of Warcraft character or disguise your voice when gaming, you can install the included software to enjoy six voice-morphing options, including cyborg, giant, mutant, space squirrel, troll and alien.
On-Ear Audio Controls
For quick access to volume, microphone mute and surround sound adjustments.
Adjustable, Noise-Canceling Microphone
Focuses on your voice and reduces background noise.
Full-Speed, All-Digital USB Connection
For clean, clear audio.
10-foot braided cable
With cable management wrap to keep excess cable out of the way.
Microphone Mute Light
So you always know if you’re on or off mute.
2 Ways to Mute
Press the microphone mute botton or rotate the microphone boom into the upright position.

The G35’s earmuffs are a circumaural design (meaning that they wrap around your outer ear, instead of resting on top of it). This helps isolate you from the distraction of outside noises while preventing the audio that you’re hearing from leaking out and disturbing other people around you. Although Logitech claims the headset is capable of delivering 7.1-channel audio, each muff has only physical speaker inside: a 40mm driver with a 15mm voice coil.

The G35 connects to your PC via a stiff, braided fabric USB 2.0 cable. You have to install Logitech’s G35 control panel software to use and configure the headset — this is a little inconvenient for LAN parties, but the software provides a lot of features. The software is also ’smart’ and automatically directs your audio to the headset while disabling your speakers — you don’t have to juggle connections or change sound settings in the Windows Control Panel when they’re plugged in.

The G35 headset comes with the “leather” (actually vinyl) ear covers, and I was immediatly struck as to how comfortable they are. Also, because of the full ear cover design, they block out a lot of ambient noise. I can’t give an actual reading in decibels of how much sound they cut out, but in a room with televisions and a radio on, they easily cut out 75% of the external noise. Never mind expensive cooling fans, these will do the job for you. If you can still hear your computer running when you have these things on, then you really need to look at the cooling solutions in your PC.

Once you’ve installed the drivers, plugging the headphones in results in the software auto-loading, and Windows automatically switching to the G35s as the default audio device. It’s a nice touch that means when you pull them out, Windows auto-switches back to your speakers without the cost or hassle of hardware switch boxes. On the flipside, these headphones will only ever be used for your Windows PC, as no 3.5mm jack is present, and no Mac or Linux drivers are supplied.

The microphone works from the moment the USB plug is connected and is one of the best we have used on a set of PC gaming headphones. It is clear and distortion-free and the rubberised mount allows the microphone to be easily positioned for optimum usage. When the microphone is rotated up out of the way, it automatically mutes itself — a nice touch.

The surround sound was, however, somewhat skeptical at times. At times I felt it worked incredibly well, and others it lagged and didn’t really immerse me as much as I was expecting (hoping). This was really apparent while playing F.E.A.R to test it out, which made some noises eerily real, while others sound flat (directional bullets and explosions) and lack of direction.

Microsoft’s LifeCam NX-6000 is a nice little webcam, but may not be all that a user may expect. The NX-6000 is a high resolution webcam with 2.0 mega pixel video, but the quality of the video is not all that it would seem in some of the resolution settings. At 640×480 and 800×600 the NX-6000 performs marvelously, but other resolution settings are not as nice. At higher resolution motion is blurry and distorted due to low frames per second, while at the low resolution settings the picture is out of focus. In the Intellipoint software, there is a focus adjustment, but it was unavailable for use with this camera. Hardware Pacers currently has a support request placed with Microsoft concerning the focus issue and will update this review if any resolution is made.

The video quality settings are an issue, but the design of this camera is amazing. Very small and portable, with a retractable lens. Once the lens is out it has the ability to tilt up and down for the perfect angle. This camera is perfect for portability; it is rugged and the lens is protected. The camera clip on back is quite sturdy as well. In addition to all that, this camera comes bundled with a nifty carrying case.

It’s at resolutions of 800×600 and below that the NX-6000 really shines. The camera produces good-looking, smooth video for use with Live Messenger or another major instant-messaging client, such as AIM, Skype Chat, or Yahoo Messenger. Alternatively, you can capture video as a Windows Media Video (WMV) clip via the Dashboard. Controls in the Dashboard also let you take JPEG stills and record Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. You can even embed an assortment of graphics into your photos (though they’re a bit childish), or use the one-click buttons to e-mail your friends or transmit images to a Windows Live Spaces blog.

Setting up the LifeCam is a breeze; the software navigates you through installation. As can be expected Windows Live Messenger comes with this software pack, but it does not come with too many options for customisation. As usual you can set resolution and other key areas (up to 1600 x 1190 pixels for video and 3200 x 2380 for still camera) but options for sound are minimal.

A dashboard control allows for very simple effects, such as a little crawling lady beetle, that would appeal to younger uses, and the camera has a 3x zoom, which can be quite handy, as well as a 71-degree wide angle lens.

The Dashboard includes the controls for the camera, such as pan, tilt and zoom. You can also use the built-in face tracking function and the NX-6000 will always keep your face in frame, so there’s no need to bother with the controls during a video chat. The Dashboard offers video effects such as snow and rain, as well as other graphics that appear on the screen with you. If you use Microsoft’s Live Spaces for blogging, you can snap pictures with the NX-6000 and upload them directly to your blog by clicking an icon on the Dashboard.

Colors are nice and rich with a decent auto white balance, keeping flesh tones fleshy and white walls white, even in dim lighting. In dark lighting however where the only source of illumination is the LCD in front of me, the LifeCam’s quality degrades significantly, due to the lack of exposure controls. Faces will be visible as far back as two feet, but beyond that nothing else can really be seen. It would have been nice if Microsoft implemented a night mode feature that raises the exposure at the expense of FPS, but no dice there.

The MSI U123 Netbook is one of the newer netbooks from MSI. It is actually part of a range of netbooks in the U123 Series that include the MSI U123H and the MSI U123T. The U123 is a 10 inch netbook that will easily fit into an A4-sized bag, and has some really cool colours (albeit with strange names) like pearl white, dolphin grey, midnight blue and silver red.

The Wind U123 sports the same chassis as the U120, which is not quite as snazzy or slim as the HP Mini 1000 or Dell Inspiron Mini 10. MSI claims that the U123’s design is for adults and business professionals, but the HP Mini 2140’s aluminum chassis seems more appropriate for that market segment. Still, the U123 is sleeker than the original U100 and forgoes its rounded edges for a squarer shape with cleaner lines. A glossy navy blue lid (also available in white, red, black, and gray) covers the outside of the netbook and is offset by a black underside and glossy screen bezel.

The display is a 10” anti-glare 1024×600 sized display. It’s excellent with vivid enough colors. Seems pretty much the same as every other 10-inch non-glare screen I’ve used on a netbook. It’s slightly brighter than the 1000HE but you can always bump the brightness up on the 1000HE with EeeCtrl. The MSI Wind doesn’t go as dark as the 1000HE though and I wish it went a tad tarker for use without the lights on. Viewing angles were the same on both the 1000HE and the U123 as far as my eyes can tell.

Its more expensive sibling, the X340, runs on Intel’s efficient ULV SU3500 processor, which, MSI claims, uses 1/6 the power of a regular mobile CPU. With its faster CPU, the system can also support faster RAM, up to 4GB of DD2-800. While both X-Slim systems boast a 13.4-inch screen with 1,366-by-768 resolution and the increasingly popular 16:9 aspect ratio, the X340 also integrates an HDMI port for 1080p playback.

Sound volume is good but it’s quite tinny. Seems the same as on the original U100. Overall I’m not really impressed with the U120’s sound quality as I’ve heard much better on a netbook. For instance, all three netbooks I have in the room right now sound better: The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, Acer Aspire One D150 and ASUS Eee PC S101.

There’s that HD Audio Equalizer you some on many netbooks (brown speaker icon in the taskbar) where many have said will give you better sound if you adjust it. In my opinion an equalizer does little when the speakers are subpar in the first place.

The design of the C8180 is similar to the rest of the printers in the Photosmart series, but this particular model has a few notable hardware additions that you won’t find in most all-in-ones. Unlike most printers, the C8180 has a swiveled touchscreen that lets you control all the software functions including photo editing, wireless setup and management, and scanning jobs.

The touchscreen eliminates button clutter and frees up the rest of the front panel for simple buttons that control one-touch red-eye removal as well as a few others for start, stop and cancel. The front of the C8180 also has a memory card bay with slots for Compact Flash, xD, SD/MMC and Memory Stick cards.

Inserting photo media into one of the front slots summons the Photosmart Express menu on the control panel’s LCD. You can even send an image from a Bluetooth-equipped phone. Printing options include simple album formats, various layouts, and even video-frame capture (which I didn’t try). The bundled HP Photosmart Essentials software offers more tools. There’s a dedicated input tray for 4-by-6-inch photo paper. The scanner platen (with an included holder for slides and negatives) digitizes hard photo media. The printer’s six total inks include light cyan and light magenta, for a broader palette when printing photos.

Colour prints on plain paper are also generally good, with solid areas of colour and good registration of black text over the top. A photocopy of our black text and colour graphics page showed better colours than many, though there was noticeable feathering of text into the paper, which gives it a fuzzy, spiky appearance. This can also be seen in the straight black text print and is a shame, as it lowers the overall print quality in an otherwise excellent set of test results.

The C8180 comes with an easy-to-follow installation booklet, which we always applaud, although this one is a bit complex. But so is the printer. Do you want to connect it to your network or a computer? And if a network, do you want to connect with a cable or wirelessly?

The wireless feature in this day of broadband routers is a tremendous advantage in placing the printer. It can go anywhere, really, as long as your router can find it. Since it also operates without a computer to copy photos or documents, you don’t have to keep it with the computer gear. All you need is an electrical outlet.

Speaking of software, the printer comes bundled with Photosmart Essential software for your PC. This software, although not required, gives your printer added benefits. For example, the printer sends pictures to any given computer, for easy emailing or more intensive editing, and all it takes is 3 to 4 taps on the touch screen.

So now you are probably wondering, “How good is the scanner?” Well, it’s pretty damn good! The quality of the scanned images is probably the best quality of any scanner I have used to date. It can deliver a resolution of up 9600 dpi (dots per inch) or 19200 dpi when enhanced with software and 96 bit rate.

Graphics are easily acceptable for any internal business use, though (as with many printers) thin lines tend to disappear. If you stay away from thin lines, the quality is sharp enough to hand out to an important client or customer you need to impress with your professionalism. I noticed a tendency for full-page graphics to make the plain paper in our tests curl, however. If you cover most of the page with graphics, you may want to use a more-expensive, heavier-weight paper.

Color photos handily rank as true photo quality—better than what I’d expect from my local drugstore. I saw a problem with color balance in a monochrome photo, with slight tints at some shades of gray. That won’t be an issue if you print only color photos, however.

The setup and install procedures for the C8180 are fairly straightforward. Partway through the process, the installation CD will ask if you want to set up the C8180 as a USB or network device (either Ethernet or Wi-Fi). If you want to switch the computer to the other connectivity option at a later time, you’ll have to reinsert the CD to install a second set of drivers. Note, however, that Bluetooth connectivity requires the USB drivers, so if you haven’t installed the C8180 as a USB device on that system, you will be asked again for the CD. Another downside: You can have a USB and network (wired or wireless) connection active at the same time, but you can’t have a simultaneous Ethernet and Wi-Fi connection. When you connect an Ethernet cable to the C8180, it automatically disables the 802.11 radio.

FileMaker has long been known for software that seems to do the impossible—marry relational-database power with impressive ease of use. The $299 (direct) FileMaker Pro 10 solidifies that reputation. A dramatically improved interface with toolbars, tooltips, and quick-start screens guides you through the design process faster than ever before. The new Report Assistant helps users present data in a variety of useful formats. Web features, too, have improved with better PHP capabilities, a new Web-site building option that has ten themes, and iPhone support. This version also supports the Excel 2007’s XLSX format. I like the changes a lot—they make database development more intuitive, and small businesses won’t be disappointed. Big corporate users will likely find Microsoft Access a more useful tool, however.

This new version of FileMaker Pro can also connect to an external SQL database, and it supports Software Management Services and IPv6. These features are critical to those who use FileMaker in larger, corporate settings, and they should extend the reach of users who want to develop their own databases.

In our tests, we were able to quickly find and replace, create, delete, and edit records in our 500,000-record database. The wait times were very short: A simple search that took FileMaker Pro 9 about 6 seconds to complete took less than 3 seconds. For better search time and overall efficiency, we recommend running FileMaker Pro 10 on a computer with at least 1GB (or even 2GB) of RAM rather than the recommended 512MB.

A less cosmetic, more substantial improvement in FileMaker 10 is a new saved-and-recent finds feature. Do you define the same finds over and over again—for example, Q4 sales, or unpaid invoices, or your favorite contacts? FileMaker 10 keeps track of your finds and lets you re-execute them without having to switch to find mode and reenter criteria over and over again. The recent finds feature is a bit like the list of recently-opened databases in the File menu or the history feature in your Web browser. And if you want to keep a find around permanently, you can simply save it, the way you might bookmark a favorite Google search.

Different status toolbars are displayed for the Browse, Find, Layout and Preview views, and each of them can be individually customised. You can hide or show the status toolbar, but you can’t revert to the old vertical status area. This is bound to cause some temporary irritation, since many fixed-size layouts that use the status area will need re-designing to accommodate the change. The benefits are worth the effort, however, and it’s a long-overdue change.

Another long-awaited improvement, which will delight FileMaker developers, is that script triggering has finally been built in. No longer do you need to rely on third-party plug-ins, because scripts can now be triggered by a comprehensive list of events including entering, leaving or modifying a field, changing layouts, committing a record and more.

The scripts and apps also ran about 15 percent faster, although FileMaker says it made only small performance tweaks in this upgrade. A frequently run, complex script–one that imports about 28,000 records from an Oracle database (as well as local records from Excel), then manipulates them and generates various reports–took an average of 53 minutes to complete in FileMaker 9, and only 45 minutes in FileMaker 10. Perhaps even more impressive, this company does all its work in FileMaker Pro, not Advanced. Unlike most relational databases, the entry-level version is not dumbed down. The Advanced version adds features needed only by custom application developers.

FileMaker Pro makes it easy to share data across a network so up to nine FileMaker Pro users (Mac or Windows) can simultaneously access a single database file. For larger groups, FileMaker Server 10 supports up to 250 simultaneous FileMaker Pro users while FileMaker Server 10 Advanced supports up to 999 people. You can also convert information into Microsoft Excel or Adobe Acrobat files and e-mailed to others.

Something that FileMaker Pro pioneered and does well is publishing databases to the Web. Here, FileMaker Pro supports up to five simultaneous Web users. And for more capability, FileMaker Server 10 Advanced supports additional Web users.

The P221W comes fully assembled, so there is very little time between unboxing and using. It is extremely bulky, though—the screen alone is 3.5 inches thick thanks to its S-PVA technology. S-PVA LCD technology offers better display of blacks and colors and wider viewing angles, albeit at a higher price than the more common, twisted-nematic technology. Also, S-PVA screens usually have slower pixel-response times and trouble with input lag, meaning that they aren’t great for fast-paced gaming.

The NEC MultiSync P221w also offers hardware calibration, an unusual extra that will likely appeal photographers and others who might want to adjust the whitepoint or gamma curve. NEC also sells calibration software for the P221w - the software enables further fine adjustments to the screen.

The NEC MultiSync P221w pivots and adjusts easily, and the unit’s smooth black finish would grace any desk quite nicely. The P221w includes DVI and VGA ports for hooking it up to a PC, but it lacks both HDMI and DisplayPort connections.

The monitor’s profile looks solid, especially in comparison with modern super-slim models. On the other hand, the P221W is obviously not meant for a secretary’s desk and does not have to look elegant. The thickness of the monitor is not a problem because the occupied space depends on the footprint of the stand. And the size of the stand is determined by the necessity to keep the monitor steady.

The explanation, of course, is cost. TN panels are much cheaper to manufacture. Most buyers, meanwhile, choose monitors based on a handful of rather rudimentary metrics. Essentially, it boils down to price and panel size. According to a number of manufacturers we have spoken to recently, the mass market just isn’t willing to pay extra for a premium panel.

That hurt the XPS 625 in a few benchmarks, which I’ll address in a bit. Four gigabytes of DDR2-800 RAM run on a motherboard that sports AMD’s 790x chip set. That isn’t the highest memory clock the processor can support; it could support DDR2-1066, too, but we rarely see that on machines at this price point.

A single Seagate 500GB hard drive provides above-adequate storage for the system, upon which Windows Home Premium 64-bit comes preinstalled.

On top of the stylish case is a small handle; this activates the door release. Just give it a tug upwards and the side of the case pops open, letting you tinker around inside, as well as perform upgradeys. There’s a ton of space inside of the case for modifications or upgraded components; Dell’s left it so that you can do pretty much whatever you want to the XPS 625. One big plus is that Dell actually put a 750 watt power supply in this machine, so for once you don’t have to worry about upgrading the power supply if you buy the desktop now and decide you want to add an additional video card and a few fast hard drives. Granted, not all power supplies are created equal, and there’s no telling how good the quality of this power supply is, but I’m willing to give the Round Rock juggernaut the benefit of the doubt.

The CPU in our test rig was an AMD Athlon X2 5600+ Black Edition running at 2.9 GHz. Deeper-pocketed consumers can upgrade to their choice of three other Dragon platform processors from AMD—quad-core Phenoms—but you’ll be tacking on between $100 and $375 to the price. Assuming the goal of going with the XPS 625 is to keep costs low, forking out for a more powerful processor doesn’t make much sense—especially given that the entry-level CPU (slightly overclocked—we’ll get to that in a bit) proved quite adequate in the games we tried.

As a complement to AMD OverDrive, you also get AMD Fusion, which acts like a software manager. It appears as a simple dial on your desktop. Turn it on before you launch a game, and it shuts down all of the extraneous applications and processes that sap performance. It comes with three presets, as well as a profile manager for creating your own settings. OverDrive is probably more useful of the two programs, as it’s easy enough to manage your background processes by hand. Both of these are worthwhile value-adds, but neither is exclusive to Dell. You’d expect to find them the on the less expensive Maingear Dash referenced above, for example, which also offers overclockable Black Edition AMD chips.

The CPU is cooled with an air cooler consisting of 8 copper heat pipes, with a single fan sandwiched between two layers of aluminum fins. Robust airflow is available throughout. As with other XPS systems, the front panel lights offer multiple colors and are tunable. The OS is Vista Home Premium x64, and also includes the Dell Dock, an add-on interface that strongly resembles the MacOS dock. The optical drive is mounted at the top, front of the case, which is something of a nuisance. When the drive tray is fully extended, the extruded aluminum case edge hands over, so you have to partly slide the disc into place before dropping it into the tray.

Since the system is designed as a low cost gaming platform, graphics are important. The Dell XPS 625 comes equipped with the ATI Radoen HD 4850 graphics card. This is a good budget graphics card that offers decent performance for those looking to play games. Expect to be able to play most of today’s games up to the 1680×1050 resolution. Higher resolutions are possible in some games but not all. It would have been nice to see Dell offer the higher performance 4870 or NVIDIA GeForce based cards as an option but they are not.

One thing that Dell does so right with the Dell XPS 625 is their Windows XP Professional downgrade. In many tests, the older XP platform does perform better for PC gaming than the newer Vista operating system. Of course, consumers are paying for Vista still and also for the XP downgrade.

The svelte-but-boxy Adamo comes in two colors, “Pearl” and “Onyx”–the latter made me do a double-take for a sec, since it looks eerily similar to the Envy 133. The difference is that this system’s unibody design doesn’t smudge up as much in your hands. The brushed-metal case of the Adamo also feels way more substantial than the Voodoo Envy 133’s chassis: I could use the Envy 133 for a couple minutes, and it would look like a crime scene with all my scuffs and fingerprints. And if I was eating Cheetos at the time–fuhgeddaboutit.

Built into an aluminum case with unibody construction, similar to the current MacBooks, the 0.65-inch-thick Adamo is, according to Dell, the thinnest laptop in the world. It certainly is thin, but going toe-to-toe with the MacBook Air, the true “thinnest” title is open to interpretation. The tapered Air is thinner at its narrowest point, but slightly thicker at its widest point. In either case these are both very slim systems (see a direct comparison here). Picking up the Adamo, it feels a little heavier than the system looks like it should. At a hair less than 4 pounds, it’s certainly lightweight, but based on the size and thinness, we were expecting something closer to the 3-pound MacBook Air.

The Adamo is one of the first laptops to use a 13.4-inch glass screen. Although the edge-to-edge glass contributed to its heft, Dell worked extensively on the inlay that supports the glass. The inlay measures 0.5mm thick and houses materials that don’t obstruct your wireless connection (The wireless antennas for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile broadband run up the screen). The extra weight of the glass was one reason why the Air, the X301, and the Z590 decided to use a plastic liner instead. The Adamo’s 13.4-inch screen is consistent with the latest movement to a 16:9 screen format from 16:10. (Both the Voodoo 133 and the Air use 13.3-inch widescreens, which are in line with the traditional 16:10 aspect ratio.)

The Dell Adamo, on the other hand, offers lesser parts and charges.. more? Maybe we should call it ‘Adamo Tax’. Dell’s high-style notebook costs between £1649 and £2249, depending on processor, storage and RAM. The Dell Adamo we tested was maxed out with a 1.4GHz CPU and included 4GB of RAM to help it make the most of the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium.

Supposedly the Dell Adamo’s battery will last 5 hours, if we’re to believe promotional materials. In the PC World battery life tests, it lasted 4 hours. Still, that’s better than how the MacBook Air fared.

Below the screen is as you would expect the keyboard - it is a laptop after all. Set into the metal casing, Dell have not opted for the individual key options you’ll find on the high-end Sony Vaio or Apple MacBook options, instead offering a keyboard with large flat-ish keys, but which still offer plenty of space even for fat fingered typists. Physically bigger than Apple’s key offering, the font change to something a little more rounded will certainly take those who notice these things a little getting used to. The font isn’t hard to read, it’s just it’s different.

The Adamo is both a compliment and an insult to Dell engineering. It’s possibly the most beautiful computer Dell has ever manufactured, but I’m not sure that Dell has caught up to competitors in either aesthetics or power. There have been lots of qualitative Adamo reviews out there, but we got the first of the units that will actually ship to customers, so it’s time for real benchmarks. As it happens, performance is really what’s at stake here.

A multimedia machine with flair, the F50Sv-A2 marks ASUS’ entrance into the emerging category of 16-inch notebooks. Thanks to its fast Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia graphics, this $1,149 system provides stellar performance and graphics punch. Add in a compelling design and included Blu-ray optical drive and you have a serious contender. The sub-2-hour battery life is a definite turn-off, but this desktop replacement offers a lot of bang for your buck.

The ASUS F50 has a slick design that looks clean and very modern. In a way you could easily compare it to the look HP uses in their notebooks having most of the surfaces color-matched and glossy. The palmrest and touchpad surface share the same design, with the pattern flowing seamlessly through both surfaces. Above, the keyboard keys are matte black with glossy black trim bordering the keyboard. The F50 lacks touch-sensitive multimedia keys, instead having only quick access buttons for Instant-On, power switching mode, Web browser, touchpad disable, and power.

Build quality is above average with solid plastic used throughout the notebook, which helps reduce flex and protect components. The screen cover gives adequate protection against impacts and the display shows no ripples when you press firmly on the back cover. The palmrest has good support and only flexes under strong pressure from your hands. Under normal activity it feels rock solid. The keyboard is the same, with minimal flex under heated typing.

Performance on the F50SV-A2 is right where it should be for its size and price. Its 16-inch screen puts the unit in the mainstream-notebook category, which also comprises 15.4-inch notebooks, many of which are priced below $800. Even so, when compared with the 16-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 (selling for $1,249 at the time this was written), it falls a little short in CPU performance.

The black, glossy top is very similar to the one on the Dell Vostro 1310 and picks up just as many smudges and fingerprints. The tendency to attract smudges also extends into the palm rest area, the touchpad, and the mouse buttons. A better-looking, more smudge-resistant Merlot (dark red) version will be available at a later date, though. The frame is boxy looking, not as curvaceous as the HP Pavilion dv6t (1030us) or the Gateway MD7801u—both consumer laptops in the same price range as the 4510s.

This build is relatively low-powered for a 15.6-inch computer, and while it will satisfy the demands of most business users, some people will want more power. The ProBook can scale considerably and buyers can move up to a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor (or down to a Celeron), add up to 8GB of RAM (you’d want a 64-bit OS with that), and up to a 500GB disk also. Other notable upgrades include a Blu-ray drive, Gobi mobile broadband, and ATI discrete graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon HD430). In keeping with the small business theme there is no SSD option, but the mobile broadband is nice to see.

The 5.7-pound ProBook 4510s won’t win any design awards, but its angular chassis with a lacquered lid (available in black or “merlot”) looks sharp; just be prepared for the fingerprint smudges whenever you touch it. The simple-yet-modern design continues under the lid, where flat-top keys pop out of a glossy backdrop. The large 16-to-9-aspect-ratio screen means there’s room for a dedicated number pad, though the main keyboard’s Function, Ctrl, and Alt keys are truncated to fit. The keyboard is plenty roomy otherwise, and the keys have good tactile and audible feedback without being too noisy when you type on them.

The 3.3 x 1.7-inch touchpad is plenty large, and the rubbery texture provides just the right amount of friction. The touch buttons, meanwhile, feel like trap doors. Instead of being straightforward push buttons, they’re hinged at the top, so only the part closest to the edge of the notebook depresses. To put it another way, it’s kind of like pressing a piano key. We would have preferred traditional buttons.

What really impresses is the spacious keyboard. The cut-out keys create enough of a gap between buttons and HP even manages to fit in a 10-key keyboard without it feeling too squeezed. Also, the final models come with a textured coating that makes the buttons more scratch-resistant. The mouse is slightly off-center and the buttons have a solid, lush feel.
