Upon arrival, deputies found a two vehicle collision involving a gray Nissan Frontier and a tan Chevy Trailblazer. The female driver from the Nissan Frontier was deceased at the scene. An adult male passenger in the Frontier was transported to the Trauma Center at University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The sole occupant and driver of the Trailblazer was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Traffic Unit responded to further investigate. At this time investigators are advising the Nissan Frontier and the Chevy Trailblazer were westbound on Roller Coaster Road. The Nissan Frontier pulled to the shoulder of the roadway to make a U-turn (to go eastbound). The Chevy Trailblazer struck the Frontier in the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Identification of the driver of the Nissan is not being released at this time pending next of kin notification.

Traffic investigators continue to investigate.

Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased adult male laying on the west side of the roadway.

Homicide Unit detectives responded for further investigation. Detectives confirmed that the victim was decapitated. The victim’s head, hands, and feet were not located with the body.

On January 18, 2012, a head, hands and feet were found in Los Angeles, California near the Hollywood sign.

Detectives from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department began working with detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department to determine if there was a possible connection to the January 6th homicide.

DNA was compared from the PCSD’s homicide case with DNA from the LAPD case. Today it was determined that the two cases are unrelated. The report will be shared with LAPD.

The goal of the upcoming checkpoints is to discourage people from driving impaired.

Motorists who are not impaired can expect only short delays of two to three minutes while passing through the checkpoint.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to adhere to two basic principles when consuming alcohol. In recognition of this problem, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has partnered with Arizona Verified Destruction (AVID) to host several “Shred-A-Thons.” The goal of these events is to promote identity theft awareness and education. These events are held throughout the year at different locations in Pima County.

The public is encouraged to participate, FREE OF CHARGE, by bringing their old personal documents and papers to be shredded. By shredding old documents, you can reduce the possibility of thieves stealing and assuming your identity.

The Shred-A-Thon is scheduled for this Saturday, February 25, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Marana High School located at 12,000 West Emigh Road. This Saturday’s Shred-A-Thon will be a drive-through shredding service. An attendant will go to your car and transfer all your documents to a bin for shredding.

If you have any questions, please contact the Community Resources Unit at (520) 351-4615.

Learn how to help.

As “elders” become more physically frail, they are less able to stand up to bullying or to fight back if attacked. They are also often a target for identity theft, fraud, and fall victim to a myriad of scams which ultimately drain their life savings.

Physical abuse most often occurs with those who are closest to the elder, be it a family member, spouse or caretaker. Institutional facilities, especially long-term care facilities, can also be a source of elder abuse. Financial abuse may include the above persons; however, it can also be committed by anyone the elder comes into contact with.

An older victim may not know how or where to seek help. Older adults often live alone or with family members and don’t interact with others in the community. They do not seek help for themselves because they either blame themselves for the abuse, or they tolerate and accept the abuse. Some types of abuse include:

Physical Abuse

Sexual Abuse

Psychological/Emotional Abuse

Financial Abuse/Exploitation

Neglect

Self-Neglect

The most common of these allegations involve self-neglect situations where the senior’s safety or well-being is being compromised by their inability to take care of their basic needs, their medical needs, their finances, their home environment or their personal hygiene.

It may be difficult to tell whether abuse or neglect is occurring. In general, look for changes in the senior’s behavior or habits. Look at how the senior is communicating, signs of their emotional health, physical limitations, personal appearance, and the condition of their home and surroundings. These signs may not necessarily be proof of abuse, neglect, or exploitation, but may be clues that a problem exists and that a report needs to be made to Adult Protective Services or law enforcement.

If you suspect someone you care about is being abused or neglected, you can help. You do not need absolute proof to report suspected abuse. Contact Adult Protective Services (APS) in the Tucson area by calling 1-877-767-2385. Adult Protective Services investigates all reports of abuse and neglect as quickly as possible.

Call 911 if you believe a senior is in immediate danger.
