It’s a jaw-dropping hideout worthy of a James Bond villain – so some may find it appropriate that Pionen White Mountain in Sweden is indeed connected to WikiLeaks, international whistle-blowing organization and current foe-du-jour of the U.S. government. Though it seems that this former Cold War bunker located nearly 100 feet below the granite rocks of Stockholm’s Vita Berg Park is not exactly WikiLeaks headquarters, it does host two WikiLeaks servers, and its combination of modern steel and primitive caves is undeniably fascinating in its own right.

Pionen White Mountain was originally created as a World War II bomb shelter and was converted into a civil defense center in the 1970s to house an emergency unit of the Swedish government in case of nuclear war. In 2008, Albert France-Lanord Architects updated it into a state-of-the-art data center for Banhof, a Swedish internet hosting company. Bahhof expanded the space to accommodate gas oil power generators that keep the servers running in the event of a power outage.

Science fiction was naturally a major inspiration for the design, Banhof CEO Jon Karlung told Pingdom. Old sci-fi movies like Logan’s Run, Silent Running and Star Wars all contributed visual clues as did – of course – James Bond.

“Since we got hold of this unique nuclear bunker in central Stockholm deep below the rock, we just couldn’t build it like a traditional – more boring – hosting center,” he said. “We wanted to make something different. The place itself needed something far out in design and science fiction was the natural source of inspiration in this case – plus of course some solid experience from having been a hosting provider for more than a decade.”

Each year, Bostons photo blog “The Big Picture” compiles an amazing set of photographs looking back at the year just gone. This year is no different, with three sets of astounding photographs looking back 2011. Rather than me telling you about the set, I’ll just let the pictures do the talking…

Any “best of” list must surely be subjective. This one is no different. Choosing the best photographs of the year is an enormously difficult task, with many terrific photographs slipping through the cracks.

I stumbled across this really nice video through a Facebook post from somebody on the fan page, it’s a video his father recorded of Dublin back in 1974. The video starts on St.Stephens Green, with the car passing the spot where TGI Fridays sits today. He then drives down Grafton Street, very different from the pedestrianized street it is today before heading down Dame Street and across the liffey. Worth a look..

My dad and his friend filmed themselves driving around Dublin city centre in 1974. They drove down Grafton Street and up by Dame Street by the central bank (still being built) then down past Trinity College and up to the top of O’Connell street. Check out the flares and 1970s cars

IRISH PREMIERE – ‘LOVE IS THE MESSAGE – A NIGHT AT THE GALLERY 1977’

Nicky Siano was the disco dj that perfected the art of beatmatching at his Gallery nights in New York in the early 70’s. His innovations were to inspire future clubland legends like Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan, and eventually landed him a residency at the mythical New York disco palace Studio 54.

He was one of the first DJ’s to move into the studio, collaborating with Arthur Russell and Talking Heads’ David Bryne on the 1978 leftfield disco classic ‘Kiss Me Again’. Following a long hiatus from DJ-ing he took to the decks again at NYC’s infamous Body and Soul parties in 1998.

He has travelled all over the world since, bringing the music and spirit of clubland’s early days with him. Now a sprightly 56 years of age, his last Dublin appearance in 2009 was supposed to be his last ever, as he planned to retire in the autumn of that year. Turns out he couldn’t stay away and with a fresh NYC residency established he looks set to keep the fire burning for some time yet.

Over the past few years Nicky has also been working on a documentary from a whole heap of original footage from the ‘Gallery’ nights back in the late 70’s. Having put the finishing touches to the documentary in 2010, Nicky took to the road to showcase the movie entitled ‘Love Is The Message – A Night At The Gallery Party 1977′. It captures the joyously wild and decadent atmosphere of a great disco party perfectly.

Nicky Siano will then take to the stage after the documentary to give a true Gallery musical experience first hand. This promises to be a very special night.
