In pursuit of God

I have decided to embark on the path in persuit of God. I will try to update my struggles in a short bloglets (no i don't use twitter, i find it quite burdensome to update all my movements). I want to use this as an avenue to note down my journey so that when i looked back, i can say that God is indeed good to me. Not that he wasn't but it is just that Man is forgetful. God has always been good to me.

When you flip the newspaper in the morning, you will be greeted with news of economic gloom and doom. Your heart will sink further and whatever hope that is remaining will falter day by day.

Everyone seems to be waiting.

Waiting...for the economy to recover.
Waiting...for companies to stop retrechments.
Waiting...for a good time to enter into the stock market.
Waiting...for the stock market to rise.
Waiting...for any good news.
Waiting...for a good deal.
Waiting...to do the things they want but are worried about the foreseeable future

It is like everyone is holding their breath.

Hoping that it is a bad dream and that it will go away quickly.
Hoping that the next retrenchment will not happen to them.
Hoping that the company they worked for will not go bankrupt.
Hoping that they will once again be able to spend on those things they like.
Hoping that they can start to dream again.

In the midst of waiting and hoping for a better tomorrow, life still goes on.

There are still births and deaths.
There are still love one to treasure
There are still work to be done.
There are still chores to be completed.

Are we losing hope or direction? Choose to focus on things you like and people you love rather than the economic gloom and work problems. Take this moment to prioritise. Many People, including myself have be racing so fast this few years to seriously reflect, prioritise and (most importantly) take action.

We can choose to sigh everyday and wait OR
We can choose to live and enjoy every moment, take each task when it comes (in stead of worrying) and face the problem in stride.

Because we know that all these will PASS and we WILL have a better tomorrow.

New Year, New Beginning

A new year, a new beginning. I am actually tired of making resolution list but God has shown me that he is weaving me together, bit by bit.

Life is a journey, it is not a cliché, but a profound truth. I know why i am still struggling to match the resolution list. It was because for the past year, i have not (yet) yield completely to Him. He has not given up on me (although i am tired of myself and my stubborn way). Because Life is a journey, a journey that i have to travel with Him.

The finanical tsunami caused by excessive consumerism and leveraging this year caused me to reflect on many things.

For 2009,

1. I want to dedicate this new year to God and spend more time with Him. I want to dedicate all my goals to Him and let Him direct my goals and my path according to His will.

2. I would like to focus more this year on the "Have"s rather than the "Have-not"s. It is easier said than done. But to look internally , to treasure and to give thank for the things that God has blessed me rather than to look at those things that others have.

I may not have gotten the COE at $2. I may not have bought my airticket at the cheapest price. I may not have that high flying job. I may not have that fancy car and house.

but i have what i have and i know i have been blessed.

3. I want to exercise more and start to control my diet. As one of my blog friends stated "Eat with less consideration for pleasure, with more awareness for health".

4. I realised that human relationship are not dependent on "chemistry" or "Charisma" but it is a result of hard work.

I want to work hard at all my relationships (family members, at work place and friends etc). It will be hardwork and i have to be prepared that not all will be reciprocated. I should not expect it. I want to be kinder, more tolerant, talk less and therefore judge less.

5. I want to smile more this year.

6. I want to believe.

On this last day of 2008, i did a little spring cleaning of my house and heart. I will spend the rest of the day in reflection and planning for the year ahead.

2008 has been a year of turbulent. I thank God that He has kept me and my family safe and full of blessings. 2009 may be a tough year (in every economic sense).

We can take this opportunity to refresh, consolidate (save more for rainy days and for financial opportunities), recover and spend more time with our family as we wait earnestly for the economy to recover.

I wish all readers a happy 2009 and may the new year bring joy, health, peace and prosperity.

In Memoriam: Ms. Lo Hwei Yen

I didn't update my blog recently. Too burdened with the 'grind' of life.

Just when i was lamenting last week how life is so repetitive and filled with so much responsibilities (that can be quite suffocating some times), i came across news of a Singaporean (my fellow countryman) held hostage by terrorist in Mumbai.

To be honest, it was so distance and i thought it would be fine in the end (we were so desensitised by all the bad news reflected in the newspaper nowadays) plus the fact that we are swamped with relentless task at work that
most of us (my friends and I) just talked about it briefly but did not stop to offer a short prayer.

It turned out to be a sad news. A Singaporean, Ms Lo Hwei Yen died at the hands of the terrorists. When i heard the news, my heart ache for her husband, their families and friends.

I do not know her. It was quite unfortunately for a bright young lady (age 29) to die at such a young age.
But what really moved me was how she lived a good life and managed to touch many lives around her. She was quoted by her friends as "There is no doubt that she lived a good life. She shopped, she travelled, she wined and dined, and she partied. But she always made an effort to show her love, care and concern and appreciation for the people around her."

Wow, i hope someone close to me would said that of me in the final eulogy at my funeral.

To live life to the fullest, enjoy every moment and at the same time made an effort (because love is an action) to show love should be the theme song for everyone. At least, it will be for me.

Today her family, friends and fellow Singaporeans bid final farewell to Ms Lo Hwei Yen. As we grieve her passing, we should also be reminded how life could be live and love like the way she did.

Efficiency is one of the main drivers for any company. It is the increase of shareholder returns by delivering profits at reduced costs. Besides striving hard to generate the income (most banks are affected by the recent financial crisis) , they should take a hard look at reducing cost. Two main cost centers they should address are the operations and IT departments.

Through innovative use of technologies like utility computing and virtualisation, banks can reduce costs. and improved speed and service.

The Lehman brothers' saga provided the banks with invaluable experience and insight on communication and service quality. They should also take this opportunity to tighen the process of selling financial products especially if they are to continue offering complex derivative products. Care should be taken to balance risk and efficiency.

Of course, there is the treasury (investment) function which in recent years is the Cash Cow of most banks.

For many years, banks have been growing at break-neck speed. The tremendous growth has produced redundancies and inefficiencies. It was not a priority to be dealt with at that time. They were more concern with more growth, riding on unprecedented economic prosperity.

A series of U.S. legislative moves in the 1980s made subprime lending possible. Mortgage securitization made the banking scene more complex than ever. Eventually the bubble burst, the subprime-led financial tsunami swept through the world affecting the real economy.

What should the banks do next?

The banking institutions should go back to the basics and take this time to increase steady revenue (interest and non-interest income), reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve service quality.

There have been sad news all around. News of economic recession and retrenchment.

People around me are quite downcast. All their efforts (chasing after) and their dreams flushed down the drain. They fought, endured, worked their heart out but at the end of the day, achieved nothing significant.

Ask yourselves: is your chase, in vain?

At the end of the day, what matters?

If you pin your hopes on your job, it will disappoint you.

If you pin your hopes on money (or the wanting more of it), it will disappoint you.

It you pin your hopes on material things like big house, car, they will 'depreciate' away
