During the last 6 months of 2009, members of POSTMUSIC began creating a documentary in a disused, cold, rainy, almost-entirely-broken 1930s art deco Odeon Cinema in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Northwest UK.

In spring we found a way into the building, cleaned up the areas that were usable and set up a studio. We began inviting musicians and bands to record a live session in one of the building's many rotten rooms, corridors, roofs and balconies, as well as in the main theatre room itself.

Forthcoming DVD features performances from:

The International.

Trouble with books.

Zombina and the Skeletones.

Each session from Aug - Nov 2009 was treated in a similar fashion to a live concert, the band arriving mostly briefed, setting up and playing in just a few hours, while POSTMUSIC members documented the whole scene using 16 channels audio engineering techniques and a handful of DV film cameras.

13 of these audio / visual sessions are available on POSTMUSIC's Cinema Sessions DVD Vol 1.

The exhibition explores the ways in which creativity can manipulate and reinvent the purpose behind ideas, objects, web-sharing, personal and world events. Works include a satirical rehash of a presidential television broadcast by filmmaker Chris Morris; as well as an immersive display of projected stills from the collection Pripyat: 21 Years After Chernobyl by architectural photographer Quintin Lake, documenting both the initial aftermath of the nuclear disaster and the change in its environment since.

Along with the show as a whole, the works use existing material by changing their original intentions; a leaders broadcast becomes a skilled re-edit ridden with satire; the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, via its documentation, inevitably becomes a collection of photographic art. Other new and existing works in the show will include; the focus of normal practical objects being turned into pieces of visual art; a short video art piece encompassing a well known graffiti love-note from the walls of the infamous Park Hill flats in Sheffield; and various pieces looking at Internet Memes and considering their place in the art world.

RUINS ALONE //

Ruins is the brainchild of drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, one of Japan's most original and fiercely independent musicians. He formed the band in the summer of 1985, originally intending to be a power trio, but when the guitarist didn't show for their first rehearsal, he bumped Ruins down to a rhythm-section-only duo. At the time, he was also performing with YBO2, along with avant guitarist K.K. Null. The seeds of the present-day communal atmosphere of Japanese underground musicians were sprouting with this early moonlighting affair, as Null would go on to play with Zeni Geva and Yona-Kit, among others, and of course Yoshida has played with darn near everyone, even The Flying Luttenbachers in a live version of "De Ventura".

With the departure of fourth bassist Sasaki Hisashi, Yoshida Tatsuya is carrying on as RUINS alone. A one-man performance that has to be seen to be believed. Yoshida performs the music of RUINS, KOENJIHYAKKEI and other music he has composed throughout his career.

Ruins produce a unique fusion of punk and progressive rock. Yoshida has stated that while he admires punk's energy, he has no desire to play pure punk, and in fact grew up on a steady diet of prog bands such as Genesis, ELP, and Gentle Giant. However, his true inspiration came from France's Magma. Magma's trademark odd-metered motives, faux operatic signing, and especially Christian Vander's extroverted drumming have certainly made their way into Yoshida's consciousness, although the jazzy undertones and relatively atmospheric group sound did not. From an early point, Ruins appealed to the avant-garde and punk listener more than the more traditional 'progger'. On their first recordings, they teamed up with NYC experimental sax-icon John Zorn, and would later put out albums on his Tzadik label. The Ruins sound is dense mix of hardcore punk, prog theatrics, and free-improv. Some critics have used the term 'jazzcore', but that seems inadequate. There really is no describing the band's sound.

MONOBROW- LIVERPOOL FREE-NOISE COLLECTIVE started in 2007 for a show with Kong in Bar Fresa. Originally a duo called Peter Smyth and running for the last 4 years doing very little to push forward popular music but swelled immensely with members of a.P.A.t.T / Stig Noise / Beast-Gigantees / Indica Ritual / The International - The Left Hand / Ruivin / Barberos n many more different combinations basically to include as many drummers and textures as could realistically fit in any one performance space.

The disused gym and dance studio on Hardman Street that for the last 8 months has been referred to as Dont Drop The Dumbells, will close.

It was an amazing space for music, art, film, discussion and quite free moments ... there will be a new series coming soon im sure...
in the meantime we will begin to release more from the last 8months of Dont Drop The Dumbells.

We will be using this site to document all wonderful creative maddness that went on from Sept 2010 - May 2011.

While we were an active space we had to be somewhat careful and not attract to much attention now that we no longer need to hide we will begin to make a fitting epitaph :) shine some light on what happened here for those that missed it and get on with new things!

It was an immense experience for POSTMUSIC and DDTD Crew. Thank You to all that supported the space from Sept 2010 - May 2011 and made it the stuff of idle chat in the future im sure :)

When we found out the building was being bought again and we would no longer be welcome POSTMUSIC began answering some of the email requests for more info and a few articles cropped up in the last few months, not only from the keen eyed diy music folks of liverpool either, thanks to ALL those who found us and props to those who stayed. x

They Ain’t Heavy: Don’t Drop The Dumbells

Rising from the spot at the top of Hardman Street where the Picket once stood, Don't Drop The Dumbells shows that nights out in this still can still have the power to surprise...

The Don’t Drop The Dumbells crew (pic r) don’t go in for manifestos. But if they did, something approximating ‘making music, not money since 2010’ would be as good an intro to the chaps’ philosophy – and the reason why this warren of rooms off Hardman Street has been responsible for some of the city’s most exciting, and eclectic musical evenings over the past two seasons.

Rising from the quadrangle of crumbling buildings that once housed the Picket, the Dumbells HQ actually occupies the former site of a deaf school, and gym (hence the name) that’s turned inwards, away from the city’s gaze, and overlooked by all but those who’ve determinately sought it out. It’s a location that fits their DNA like a hand in a double helix glove.

Outside, at street level, there’s talk of a Cafe Nero, and a(nother)Tesco to trap the city-bound as they trudge down from the University to Bold Street. But the Dumbells remain undaunted. Their art and music space, practice rooms and bunker
isn’t about to be bulldozed by big business anytime yet.

Jake, Steve and Joel met up concocting something wonderful, and fleeting, at the equally crumbly Park Palace – a boarded up music hall hidden in the badlands of the Dingle. A couple of encounters later, and they’d met the landlord of their current HQ, and sold him on the idea of exchanging a peppercorn rent in return for breathing life, and purpose, into this venerable corner of city’s musical heritage.
“It’s an experiment,” says Jake. “We wanted to create an environment that’s not hostile to creativity, one that doesn’t make money a consideration for getting involved.”
“There’s not enough people who don’t care about money,” he adds. “It just doesn’t happen in the UK, but in Europe, places like Dumbells thrive in the city’s abandoned spaces, and the authorities either turn a blind eye, or have a hands off position that allows them to grow and thrive.”
Things, so far, are thriving nicely here, too. Half hidden behind the cast iron gates, the DDTD DIY aesthetic is proof that you don’t need bouncers, nor PR, nor early bird wristbands to create a genuinely exciting musical movement in the city. All you need is an old gymnasium (tick), a seriously skilled sound engineer (tick) and some of Europe’s most innovative and incendiary live acts (double tick), and you got yourself a scene. Sort of. Just don’t tell everyone.
“We only put posters up in here,” laughs Jake, “then our crowd is self selecting. We never get any trouble. If scallies ever do wander in, they don’t last long…”
Not that the Dumbells are fostering any ideas of a cool-kids only space for the in-the-knows and the circle-jerking scenesters. If you get it, you can be part of it.
“There’s been a real lack of imagination in the city, especially in the new venues and music spaces opening up,” Steve says. “We just thought ‘if you’re a new band, with no money, no address, how do you get to perform? If you don’t give a platform to the city’s genuinely creative souls, you’ll lose them. And then we’ll all be poorer.”

To that end, DDTD has seen memorable nights from local and international heroes such as Ergo Phizmiz, Zombina and the Skeletones, Ex-Easter Island Head, a.P.A.t.T and Carlton Melton: bands big, small, young and old, drawn to the climbing frames and parquet flooring up Hardman Street with no promise of a rider, no merch stand, no 7 out of 10 reviews in The Echo. Just a crowd, an atmosphere, and a feeling that everyone’s in it together.
“Why aren’t other people doing this?” ponders Jake, beneath a hanging mobile of molars and incisors (remnants of a toothy art installation) “Liverpool’s got us and the Kaza, but there needs to be more spaces where you can genuinely have a meeting of minds, and where amazing things can happen. Where there’s an opportunity to come up with something new…”
As we talk, somewhere in the building’s labyrinthine passages, other members of the crew are digitally splicing together the latest video diary: since its inception DDTD has produced discrete documents of its art shows, discussions, film shows, parties and pandemonium – for no other reason than to say – hey, this happened. Hosted by Paul Tarpy, the videos add weight to the belief that what’s happening here isn’t a random collection of gigs, of 20 and 30 somethings getting wasted on cider and pogoing to art rock (although, to be fair, that’s pretty much as good a reason to call as any), but a counter-culture documentary, filmed in real time, with real people.
“People remember the early eighties’ political scene,” Jake says, “we’re just trying to keep that spirit alive. There’s so many distractions, these days, but we believe that when everyone pools what they’ve got together, something great can happen. The beauty is in finding it.”
And this is one experiment the DDTD crew are determined isn’t going to be as easily snuffed out by the wrecking ball, the tyranny of town planning or – yes, even – the advance of Tesco.

On May 13th 2011 an exhibition opened at Wolstenholme Creative Space as part of Light Night Liverpool and a half hour film documentation of 3 shows POSTMUSIC organized and filmed in W C S was shown. Wolstenholme Creative Space highlights radical movement within the city, celebrating independent culture and living. The gallery will exhibit some of the best photography and moving image that documents Liverpool's creative music scene,including live footage from seminal gigs stemming from Liverpool's DIY venues, as well as stalls from the city's best loved independent retailers and anarchist publishers.
The gallery will also house site specific installations and artwork by Artlab Contemporary Print Studio and a live performance by artist The MothMan at 9.00pm.

Originally Episodes 01 - 04 went out weekly documenting the first 2 months Sept - Nov 2010 - As this whole project is fully unfunded and we are quite an active space, demands on time were immense and we have decided from Episode 05 to put them out just as regulary as we can but we making them longer and mix them up abit ...

REMEMBER, REMEMBER, Led by Graeme Ronald, Remember Remember began life as one man and his loop pedal. Crafting delicate electronic structures in his bedroom, initial material had a rare fragility which seemed completely unforced.

Now expanding to a seven piece group, the collective have moved far beyond their origins. Returning with last year's four track EP 'RR Scorpii' the band move between Krautrock, folk and electronics.

Hoooray! its here! :) Finally.

We have been documenting quite obsessively since working in this space and after putting the first 4 months of footage together with mostly pretty ropey last minute camera work and harsh built in mic sound, we've got a couple of hours of footage edited together. so, the idea is to cut it up and release it in episodes once a week, each show presented as an episode and hosted by local wordy fella Paul Tarpy.

This is the first installment from the very first show curated within days of acquiring the space.
