The festivities will begin on Friday, October 8th at 1pm with a high-roller 9-ball tournament. This one day event will only have 16 spots available. At $350 entry, those who especially want to play, will fork over the cash! California Billiards is guaranteed to add $1,000 to the prize fund. With a full field, this one day event could yield a purse up to $6,600! Race to 8 on both sides of the bracket.

Beginning at 11am on Saturday, October 9th. 64 player maximum number of entrants allowed in this tournament, at $85/each player (bringing the pot potential to $9,440). POV Pool returns to Hards Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA for its first Saturday 1-Pocket and Sunday 9-Ball Tournaments. Each month, pool players from across Southern California and beyond gather at the largest pool room in Los Angeles. The weekend starts with the best of LA playing 1-pocket. The usual 1-pocket gamblers leave their normal hang-outs to come out and see who is the best in the tournament. The winner comes out with bragging rights for the month, until the next, ‘first Saturday’ tournament. In rare instances someone will win several months in a row and tell this memory for years.

Bragging rights goes without saying when you win the 9-Ball Hard Times Tournament, as well. Because Hard Times Bellflower is near LAX airport, you never what pros will drop in. That being said if you can defeat the best in Southern California and then any additional pros, you would definitely have the right to boast of your accomplishments.

Every June, Family Billiards in San Francisco commemorates the life of Cole Dickson, one of the greatest pool players who traveled the country playing money games and tournaments. COLE DICKSON (NOVEMBER 20TH, 1950 – MAY 15TH, 2013) WAS KNOWN AS A STAND-UP INDIVIDUAL WHO ALWAYS PLAYED WITH HEART. DELBERT WONG, OWNER OF FAMILY BILLIARDS, WAS A DEAR FRIEND TO COLE DICKSON. THIS YEAR, DELBERT WILL BE ADDING $3500 GUARANTEED TO THE PURSE AND WILL NOT BE TAKING ANY GREEN FEES.

SUMMER SHOOTOUT: 3-CUSHION BILLIARD TOURNAMENT

In May of 2019, 3-Cushion USA will hold its first championship tournament. This prestigious 3-cushion tournament at Tucson, Arizona’s premier resort and casino/venue, Casino Del Sol. The 6-day event from May 27th-June 1st will consist of a handicap format tournament, open to 64 players. With a guaranteed $5,000 added tournament, three cushion billiards in the United States is getting the bang of revival!

This event will be handicapped based on the player’s average (skill level). With the varying point spreads, the amateur player can be competitive with the best players. Depending upon your average, the entry fee and points vary:

The Andy Mercer 9-Ball Classic Tournament has helped to cement the reputation of the bar-table or ‘bar-box’ as a great equalizer. Mr. Mercer was visionary who started the Southern Nevada Tavern’s Association which got the ball rolling for local pool players who were looking for competition and regular events. Although the Association lived on, Andy Mercer passed from a heart attack at the early age of 59; at which point, longtime friend and Rum Runner owner, Geno Hill started this event in 1991 to celebrate Andy’s legacy.

In support of many hopeful players who, wish to qualify for the 2019, U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship at the Mandalay Bay Hotel/Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada; California Billiards in Fremont, California has coordinated directly with Matchroom Sport to host an Official, ‘U.S. Open, 9-Ball Qualifier’ event with additional payouts to the top 16-24 players (based on final field size). Open to 128 players, California Billiards is adding $2,000 with no green fees attached; entries will be ‘tiered’ based on each player’s Fargo Rating.

April of 2019, is set to be a record-breaker in cue sports history, as players from all over the world will touchdown in Las Vegas to attend the 43rd annual, US Open 9-Ball Tournament at the prestigious, Mandalay Bay Hotel Resort. Boasting a total prize fund of $300,000; Matchroom Multi Sport’s recent acquisition of the ‘U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship’ franchise from the Behrman estate in 2017; a franchise that was launched in 1976 by Barry Behrman who passed in April 23, 2016.

Hard Times Billiards: 30 Years!

Returning to Bellflower, California for the 7th consecutive year, POV POOL will be on location to provide ‘live-action’ coverage of December’s, ‘Hard Times Billiards Monthly, One-Pocket and 9-Ball Tournaments’. Coincidentally, it turns out to be a total of 30 years of operation since Hard Times Billiards opened in 1988. That said, we have decided to celebrate its 30th just prior to the Holiday Season and when it’s coolest (If you know what I mean). And for this December weekend, Hard Times’ owner, Eddie Arreguin has arranged to provide a few giveaways at the venue (for those who are eligible); a Mezz EC7 cue, cue case, Hard Times Billiards t-shirts and items by TAOM Tips.

Remembering Hard Times Billiards, Bellflower

It is important to note that, this December’s, Hard Times 1st weekend (specifically the Sunday, 9-Ball), should mark a notch in cue sports history as being the longest running, monthly pool tournament at any one single venue. Shortly after opening it’s doors in 1988 and originally dubbed, the Hard Times, 1st Sunday 9-Ball Tournament, Son and Father, owner/operators (in that order), Mike and Chuck Markulis posted the event to the monthly calendar. With the tournament direction of well known pool promotor and now, author ‘Toupee’ Jay Helfert, the 1st Sunday, Hard Times 9-Ball became a staple for local and traveling pool players seeking to develop their talents. Back in those day, Chuck Markulis and Jay Helfert held court with a regular attendance of up to 90 players each month, consistently adding various monies from the house.

Fun Fact: On opening day, it was recalled by Ken Thomason that, when Chuck opened the doors he welcomed everyone in and told them that table time was free for the day!

Then in the early 2000’s came ‘The Wave’! Dave ‘The Wave’ Hemmah that is; who was hired by Ken Thomason as the Hard Times’ ‘House-Pro’ and who, also took over as tournament director, was instrumental as an instructor and as a mentor to many in the pool community. Hard Times’ 2nd owner Ken Thomason purchased Hard Times Billiards in the mid 90’s with a similar vision support pool players with the best playing conditions at all times and to provide a safe and friendly atmosphere for family patrons and casual players. It was shortly after this time that Ken added a 1st Saturday, One Pocket Tournament to the rotation and, The Hard Times 1st Weekend Tournaments quickly grew roots in Southern California, by earning recognition as a regular stomping ground for scores of pool heroes such as, Efren Reyes, Jose Parica, Lou Butera, Keith Mcreedy, Tang Hoa, Ernesto Dominguez, Larry Bohn, Morro Paez, Bernardo Chavez,  Ron Rosas, John Morton, Francisco Galindo and honestly, the list is goes on and on and on…Ritchie Florence, Kim Davenport, Raphael Martinez, Rodney Morris, Hawaiian Brian, Jay Swanson, Jeannette Lee, Francisco Bustamante, Dennis Hatch, and on even further, it is no wonder that Hard Times Billiards has long been dubbed, ‘The Home Of Champions’.

It is certain today that, if you were to ask any veteran pool player about the Hard Times monthlies during pool’s ‘heyday’, you just might get cornered for an hour or two with endless tales.
