Like many cities catching up from the Great Recession, the City of Paso Robles is considering a sales tax measure to address projects, programs, and services that were delayed or cut over the past 10 years.

Paso Robles is proposing a general revenue measure, which would require a majority of voter support, as opposed to a special revenue measure, which would require support from twothirds of voters. In order to determine local sentiment on the matter, the City hired an experienced polling firm to conduct phone and email surveys of residents to determine the likelihood of voter support for a 1% sales tax measure on the November ballot and what residents feel should be the top priorities for spending resulting funds. Read Press Release [PDF]

Staying Safe on Independence Day

Celebrated across the country, Independence Day is often marked by great food, fireworks, and time making memories with family and friends. Don’t let those good memories turn into nightmares by making the tragic decision to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This July Fourth, let’s all work together to spread the life-saving message that driving impaired is unacceptable, deadly, and illegal behavior. It puts drivers and passengers at risk, as well as other road users. In fact, in 2016, an average of one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 50 minutes. As you, your friends, and your family head out to the July Fourth festivities this summer, keep safety at the forefront. During the Fourth of July holiday weekend, make sure you plan for a safe week of festivities, keeping in mind this vital message: DUI DOESN’T JUST MEAN BOOZE. Read Press Release [PDF]

Think Before You Drink... Party Safely This Cinco de Mayo

Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving

In the United States, the Cinco de Mayo holiday has become synonymous with drinking and parties. Historically, the fifth of May commemorates Mexico’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Unfortunately, there’s no victory when partygoers drink and drive.

The Cinco de Mayo holiday period (6 p.m. May 4 to 5:59 a.m. May 6) is especially deadly on our nation’s roads, with almost one-third (28%) of all crash fatalities from 2012-2016 involving a drunk driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In fact, from 2012-2016, there were 305 people killed in drunk-driving crashes over the Cinco de Mayo holiday period, with 51 people killed in 2016 alone.
