This past week was momentous in terms of news that the markets ultimately seemed impervious to.

While bullish has remained the sentiment – and still has to – most of the setups I’m seeing just aren’t as optimal as I’d like them to be.

At the stock level we’ve seen some of the volatility I mentioned last week, but not as much as I still believe we will see.

That belief comes from the quality of setups I’m seeing, in combination with the overextended nature of the indices.

Last week I suggested increased volatility was likely. While many stocks did exhibit increased volatility, the indices were entirely robust. From what I see at the individual stock level, I still anticipate increased volatility in due course.

In practical terms that means protect your profits early as per our P1 Trade Plan tactic.

Like last week, finding individual nuggets was more challenging than usual, and I also went through all my static watchlists manually.

As usual I’m sticking to the tried and tested formula of Big Money Footprints near my favoured Key Levels (a Big Money Footprint in its own right!).

The key to consistency is to pick your playbook and stick to the best quality setups that conform to it. If the setups aren’t there, keep your powder dry for another time.

My playbook is OVI, near Key Levels, Shrinking Retracements, and a consolidation/sideways move.  The other two Big Money Footprints are highly desirable but those four are essential to me! Increasingly, I’m researching the resulting impact of very short term momentum, and with my new VIP filters I’m also now looking more at overbought and oversold issues.

It started on Tuesday with the S&P and Nasdaq gapping down, followed gap ups on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, only for the markets to wobble on the Jobs Report.

So, what do we make of all that?

My assessment is that more volatility is on its way.

Last week I took a neutral outlook on the indices, suggesting they could use a pullback.
They did exactly that on Tuesday before recovering midweek and finally stalling on Friday.

One of the keys to mastering market timing is to study not just the indices, but also individual stocks … hundreds of them.
That’s what I do every week, and with our particular tools we’re able to call the markets accurately with impressive success.

As we stand today, with so many stocks not looking optimally neat and tidy, my outlook this week is for more volatility.

  All four indices have some sort of blue OVI going on … the most compelling being the IWM’s OVI but the IWM’s context that of being rather overbought and potentially ripe for a reversal.

Some people might get twitchy about this, but without the benefit of hindsight, at this point there’s not much to get too twitchy about.

The indices are a bit overstretched, but that didn’t stop nearly every stock in my “little list” rising, some spectacularly so … Hello ALK again!

I expect broad bullish follow throughs from solid bullish post earnings setups.

This was spot on with nearly every stock highlighted moving up.

With next week being a four-day week starting on Tuesday, and with one hour being a long time in these markets, I’m going to be neutral in terms of the indices. They could use a slight pullback, while those stocks that are shaping up nicely should continue to be attractive provided nothing dramatic happens in the meantime.

Nearly every stock that we flagged as bullish did ultimately go up … but in several cases not without a blip first … and one or two of those blips were rough.

By rough I mean making false breakouts before taking a nasty pullback but then rising sharply back up … Yes, you ALK!

But overall another good week. The main indices did pull back somewhat – as expected – and then roared back on Friday, suggesting further upside is likley.

And in the post-earnings environment, that’s good news for us WiseTraders.

With the exception of a couple of interesting setups I’m happy for this week to be risk-off.

Those couple of interesting setups were excellent!

The main indices demonstrated their robustness last week, bouncing back after another tariff tremor.

And while our targeted highlighted stocks faired exceptionally well, a closer look at the main sectors does show a slightly more circumspect picture across the board.

So, once again, focus on solid liquid stocks (also with liquid options) setting up with OVI and other Big Money Footprints near the Key Levels.

While Pre-earnings is super exciting, such trades need to be handled with small amounts and with a thorough understanding of risk.

In recent cases like RDDT and NCLH you’d have done well. But there will be rough ones out there too – like AMZN, which was already overbought and for those already holding profits there, a sensible hedging strategy would have considerably mitigated that gap down.

The more sustainable strategy – and our favorite – is Post-earnings.
When the news is already out and you can see which way the wind is blowing with reduced risk of a further news shock.
Taking advantage of the post-earnings drift phenomenon, and then increasing your odds with an optimal trade plan.

Our market commentary continues to be outstanding. Mastering market timing enables you to swim WITH the tide at the right time.

On Tuesday we had the sort of bar that gets me tightening stops. The S&P was already overbought but we had an open-high, close-low bar. On Thursday we had the same but with a much wider range. From an overbought position, this is a risk-off or reversal bar.

From the perspective of last weekend (ie. before Tuesday!), while we expected earnings to continue in a positive fashion, I also said:

… there aren’t a huge number of optimal setups. Optimal being obvious Big Money Footprints, especially including OVI, Shrinking Retracements, and consolidations very close to Key Levels.
… Here’s where you just need to be patient for an optimal setup with your risk well-defined and low.
As with the last three weeks’ theme, let’s still keep away from technically extended issues … We’ll continue to focus on breakout potentials near our favored Key Levels, with a particular leaning towards Post-Earnings setups.
… while further upside is more likely, reward/risk is not as optimal due to the slight overextended nature of the main indices and many of the constituents of those indices.

If you’ve been patient you’re largely unscathed by the last couple of days.

This pullback is ultimately a good thing for us as it will drag good stocks back into much more optimal levels for our particular style.

With the exception of a couple of interesting setups I’m happy for this week to be risk-off. We’re in Post-earnings, and better setups will come.

The key to consistency is to pick your playbook and stick to the best quality setups that conform to it. If the setups aren’t there, keep your powder dry for another time.

My playbook is OVI, near Key Levels, Shrinking Retracements, and a consolidation/sideways move.  The other two Big Money Footprints are highly desirable but those four are essential to me! Increasingly, I’m researching the resulting impact of very short term momentum, and with my new VIP filters I’m also now looking more at overbought and oversold issues.

Another good week in the market with no real surprises. The markets continued to rise as expected, and there weren’t a huge number of optimal setups.

Optimal being obvious Big Money Footprints, especially including OVI, Shrinking Retracements, and consolidations very close to Key Levels.

That remains the case this week, with one small difference …

We’re now a week into Earnings, and the Post-Earnings setup pies are beginning to fill up.

Here’s where you just need to be patient for an optimal setup with your risk well-defined and low. There will be optimal setups forming over the coming weeks – there always are!

This still holds, but we must always be aware about optimal setups in terms of reward/risk as well as probabilities.

So, right now further upside is more likely, but reward/risk is not as optimal due to the slight overextended nature of the main indices and many of the constituents of those indices.

Although it was a sideways week, the SPY, QQQ and DIA remain technically overbought, but earnings starts this week, and the markets are clearly in an optimistic mood … Let’s see what the next wave of Tariffgate brings!

That doesn’t mean we chase overstretched stocks, and it does mean we’re likely to miss out on some of their further upside.

But there are still plenty of interesting setups near our favorite Key Levels, so we’ll continue to focus on those ones, which are also exhibiting bullish OVI and Shrinking Retracements.

  As per the last couple of weeks, the OVI for all the main indices is pretty much blue as of the end of the week.

Stock Selection:

Managing risk in your trade management is essential. All too often I see systems and gurus ignore it.

The WiseTraders EDGE trade plan is excellent at its primary function of controlling risk, our Big Money Footprints (BMF) setups also contribute significantly to controlling risk.

When you trade our optimal setups, you’re typically only entering positions on confirmed breakouts of consolidation-type patterns near Key Levels, with no anticipated news imminent, and with several significant and tested (BMF) indications present that suggest an enhanced probability of a conservative first profit target being hit.

That’s how we increase our win ratios, and that’s still before we even get to the specifics of the optimal exit plan.
