It’s amazing how internet buzz works — it truly is an online representation of how A.D.D. our culture has become. One minute, you are a supernova blowing up everyone’s playlists and crashing rapidshare servers, the next, you’re a neutron star collapsed in upon yourself devoid of any luster. DOM has experienced this full circle: bursting onto the scene in 2010 with their Sun Bronzed Greek Gods EP and the Millennial’s party anthem “Living In America”, only to fizzle out a little (though no fault of their own — their second EP in 2k11 was pretty damn good too), and now coming back hot fittingly with “Hot.limit” much to the delight of mp3 bloggers everywhere. The track is hyper-active (as expected) and 99%-instrumental (a little less so), reaching levels of energy only Born Gold seem to be able to reach with their live shows. New joint from one of my favorite discoveries of 2012: Waxahatchee (i.e. Katie Crutchfield). Markedly different from the cabin-in-the-woods singer/songwriter vibe of her debut, Cerulean Salt, Crutchfield’s sophomore LP, seems to be more in-line with the kind of stuff her sister makes with the band Swearin’ — only a lot less punk and a lot more chill. And it’s more than just the introduction of electric guitar that bridges the comparison with the track “Coast to Coast”: the song length (sub two-minute) and fuzzed-out outro also show the kinship of the two projects. But hey, I’m not complaining! The Crutchfield’s can do no wrong in my book! Pre-order the record here.

Although I posted about it a couple of months back, it still caught me off guard when I saw that they were streaming Sally Shapiro’s latest LP Somewhere Else on Pitchfork Advance earlier this week. I did a quick run through of the album and, damn, it’s pretty solid! Pre-order the record (it gets released on February 26) from Paper Bag Records here — better hurry because I know they have one less white vinyl LP available as of five minutes ago…

When it comes to internet hyper-enthusiasts, the only thing that comes anywhere close to rivaling hip-hop blogs are electronic music websites — with their seemingly endless dissections of sounds and beats. With me, don’t expect a dissertation on computerized sub-genres (and, in most cases, sub-sub-sub genres: I’ll let this guy do it), all I know is that I like what I like: whether it be name brand or subterranean.

Case in point: the electro-drippings of Austin producer Dubbel Dutch with his Self Help Riddim EP. Released on Mixpak Records (the same bunch that brought you fellow PT-Music beloved Andy Petr), the record is twenty minutes worth of instrumental, synth-heavy electro-smooth jammz. Sean, from the recently reviewed Perth-based Braves, messaged me to let me know of another project he is a part of, appropriately named Sunny.

The band’s bandcamp page at the moment is mostly a collection of singles, but each track is picture perfect for the beach us in Northern Hemisphere are so longing to get back to! “Rewind” is the latest track — full of chilled-out, soothing guitar lines and airy vocals — but be sure to take a glance at some of their past stuff (“So Cool” and “Anywhere” are personal favorites); you’ll be sure to find something that gives you at least momentary relief from shoveling knee-high snow from the sidewalk.
