Library Website Refresh

This summer we migrated the library website into a new system in order to
introduce a responsive (mobile and desktop friendly) design and refreshed look for
the existing content. If you had bookmarked any pages on the library website, those
links should continue to work, redirecting to the equivalent page on the new site.
Many thanks to our colleagues in IT Services for making this migration and refresh
possible!

Finding their roots at Special Collections

Third cousins Chris Dennis of Sacramento, CA and Meg Slotkin of Montclair,
NJ met for the first time recently at PTS to examine the Mendenhall J. Dennis
papers. Mendenhall J. Dennis, their great great grandfather, was born Mendel Diness
in Odessa, Ukraine in 1827. Trained as a watchmaker, Diness went to Jerusalem in
1848 and accepted baptism, first as an Anglican Christian, then as a Campbellite,
and his name was changed to Mendel John Diness. He learned photography from Scottish
missionary James Graham and became the first Jewish photographer in Jerusalem.
Around 1859 Diness and his wife emigrated to the US, settling in Ohio and opening a
photography business. He changed his name again, to Mendenhall John Dennis, and
traveled throughout the Midwest giving illustrated lectures on the Holy Land with
his photos. He relocated to Port Townsend, WA, where he died in 1900. In 1989, more
than 100 of Diness’ glass plates were discovered at a Minnesota garage sale, along
with some of his notebooks and prints, all of which were thought to have been lost.
Researchers consulted PTS Archivist William O. Harris and other archivists and
pieced together the biography behind the images. In 1993 the Semitic Museum of
Harvard University held an exhibition of Diness’ works. Cousins Slotkin and Dennis
believe the papers at PTS might be notes for Diness’ illustrated Midwest lectures.
Special Collections is delighted to learn more about this collection and help
preserve the story of a gifted man with a rich history.

Another excellent new addition to the Princeton Theological Seminary Media
Archive is an Institute of Theology four-lecture series by former Princeton
Theological Seminary professor Diogenes Allen entitled Christianity and the
Postmodern World. “Allen will long be remembered as an extraordinary teacher,
particularly for the clarity he brought to his difficult subject matter. Few have
been able to make difficult thought so understandable and so attractive." Read more

NEW: MLA Directory of Periodicals and MLA International Bibliography

The Library has recently purchased access to two Modern Language
Association (MLA) databases: The MLA Directory of Periodicals and the MLA
International Bibliography. The MLA Directory of Periodicals offers detailed
information on over 5,500 journals, with 4,400 currently indexed in the
International Bibliography. The detailed entries include editorial contact
information, as well as frequency, circulation, subscription prices and submission
guidelines. The MLA International Bibliography offers a detailed bibliography of
journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language
Association, the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920's and
contains over 2.3 million citations from more than 4,400 journals & series and
1,000 book publishers. The indexed materials coverage is international and includes
almost 60 titles from J-STOR's language and literature collection as well as links

Princeton Theological Seminary Library's Theological Commons
(commons.ptsem.edu), a free digital library of over 80,000 resources on theology and
religion, has a new featured collection, the Princeton Theological Seminary Media
Archive, containing over 1400 unique, unpublished audio and video recordings from
1940-1999. This collection includes public lectures and sermons from prominent
scholars, pastors and church leaders, and it will continue to grow as more
recordings are digitized and added. We're also pleased to announce that the entire
Theological Commons has a new user interface, designed to be not only visually
appealing but also highly usable on any screen size, from smartphones to desktop

2016 marks the 500th anniversary of the first published New Testament in
Greek. The accomplishment was the culmination of the talents of a scholar, a printer
and an illustrator: Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536), Johannes Froben (1460-1527), and
Hans Holbein the Younger (circa 1497-1593). An exhibit is currently on display on

New face in the library: Rev. Francis Grimke (1850-1937)

A portrait of Francis Grimke (PTS Class of 1878), which until recently hung
in Stuart Hall, is now in the library on the second floor bridge overlooking the
Iain R. Torrance Atrium. Grimke was born into slavery in 1850, graduated at the head
of his class from Lincoln University in 1870, and served as the pastor of Fifteenth
Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, from 1878-1937. He was a founding
member of the Niagara Movement in 1905, a black civil rights organization led by
W.E.B. Du Bois, and was also a founding member of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People in 1910. This portrait of Rev. Grimke was done
posthumously in 1991 by Kevin J. Stanton. It was suggested that the Seminary have
such a portrait by William O. Harris, at that time the Archivist of the Seminary. He
spoke about this with David H. Hughes of Hallmark Cards, at that time a member of
the Princeton Theological Seminary Board of Trustees, who agreed to underwrite the
cost of the portrait. The frame found for it is an authentic 1875 period frame.

Kuyper Collection receives first completed volume of new translation

"The first volume of the new English translation of Abraham Kuyper's works
has been published and 3 copies can be found in the Princeton Theological Seminary
Library, in the reference collection, the Kuyper Collection, and on the lower level
in the stacks. "A key research resource for the Abraham Kuyper Center for Public
Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary has been the Kuyper Collection. Based on
the extensive personal library of the late Dr George Puchinger, built up over a life
time, additions to the collection have made it the richest source of material by and
about Abraham Kuyper anywhere in the world. Over the years it has attracted a steady
stream of researchers, but much of the collection, including many of Kuyper’s own
works are in Dutch. Consequently, PTS was pleased to join several other institutions
in supporting and underwriting the Kuyper Translation Society’s ambitious project of
making all Kuyper’s works available in English. The first few of many planned
volumes have now been published and added to the Kuyper Collection as a valuable

Nouwen manuscripts bridge spiritual life and academics

"Sorting through a sheaf of loose papers in the Seward Hiltner Papers
[Special Collections, Princeton Theological Seminary Library], I discovered two
unpublished (or certainly prepublished) manuscripts by Henri Nouwen. His works on
Christian Spirituality such as Life of the Beloved, The Wounded Healer, and In the
Name of Jesus are well known. What I found was quite different, two academic papers.
In one, Nouwen presents a case study of a man named Ronald from a historical,
psychological, and theological point of view. The other paper critiques several
models of supervision in Clinical Pastoral Education from 1965. Both papers convey
Nouwen’s compassion and relentless insistence on care for all. They also reveal a
spiritual life concurrent with, not divorced from, his academic work. I hope to
follow his example and use my academic work to serve the spiritual needs of people
in my ministry." Joshua Wilder, M.Div. Senior, Princeton Theological

on His Life and Work. Join President Serene Jones and Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of
Social Ethics, Gary J. Dorrien in welcoming Elisabeth Sifton, the editor of Reinhold
Niebuhr: Major Works on Religion and Politics and daughter of Reinhold Niebuhr, to
campus on November 3rd. Sifton is senior vice president of Farrar, Straus and Giroux
and the author of The Serenity Prayer: Faith and Politics in Times of Peace and War.
For the Library of America series, she edited four classic works and a selection of
rare writings from the great theologian Reinhold Niebuhr which was published earlier
this year. After serving for thirteen years as a pastor in Detroit, MI, Niebuhr
joined the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York in 1928.
Two years later, he was appointed Dodge Professor of Applied Christianity, a title
he held for three decades until his retirement in 1960. Reiny, as he was known in
the Seminary community, held open houses on Thursdays for students at his apartment,
where there was much lively discussion about current affairs. Niebuhr's theology and
political philosophy continue have a large influence on many thinkers, activists,
politicians and pastors today.

On Sunday, March 7, 1965, 600 people participated in the historic civil
rights march from Selma to Montgomery, AL. A second march took place two days later,
which James J. Reeb, a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and Unitarian

the visit, Curator of Special Collections and Archivist Kenneth Henke exhibited

nonsectarian anti-slavery society, the American Missionary Association. The book,
which is available online in Princeton Theological Seminary's Theological Commons as
part of the Benson Collection of Hymnals and Hymnology, traces efforts by Fisk
University’s student a capella choral ensemble, the Jubilee Singers, to raise money
for construction of the university’s first permanent building. The text features

The Moisés Sáenz Manuscript Collection: a student's reflection

While working in Special Collections this spring, M.Div. Middler Anthony
Matias processed the The Moisés Sáenz Manuscript Collection created by PTS alum
Harry E. Rosser. Here’s some of what he learned: "Education reformer Moisés Sáenz
(1888-1941) was a leading voice for marginalized indigenous people in Mexico and
other countries in Central and South America. He established and taught at different
schools designed to help the impoverished and he believed education was a necessary
tool in strengthening the Mexican people. His schools were designed both to teach
theory and address the social needs of the people. Much of Sáenz’ approach to
education is based on the work of John Dewey, who was Sáenz’ professor and mentor at
Columbia University where Sáenz received his Ph.D. This collection contains a
plethora of autobiographical information collected by PTS alumnus Harry E. Rosser
(1945) and shows the important work Moisés Sáenz did in Mexico as an educator for
indigenous people.”

M.Div. Junior reflects on Pomeroy, Class of 1861, Civil War collection

"When visiting the library, everyone can see beautiful artifacts and pieces
in the display cases, but many don’t realize that this represents a fraction of the
resources in Special Collections. I started working in Special Collections in the
fall of last year and have discovered many interesting items from antiquity to the
present and from the Arabian deserts to the jungles of Africa. I also had the
opportunity to catalog a collection from a PTS alumnus John Jay Pomeroy (1861). When
the Civil War broke out, he joined the Union Army as chaplain. For the rest of the
war, he was on the front lines assisting the wounded and dispirited soldiers. He
carried a portable desk from which he wrote letters home and a few pocket-sized
books, including a Bible and a dictionary. The portable desk, along with the letters
he wrote and books he carried, were donated to the seminary by his family. This term
I am taking the class “American Christianity from the Puritans to the Civil War.”
Sometimes history can seem ethereal and distant, but working with this collection
helped bridge the gap between the present and the events that we are studying in
class. It also brings out the genuine humanity of individual people and how they
dealt with their struggles." Joshua Wilder, M. Div. Junior, Princeton Theological

Remembering Bill Harris, former archivist and librarian for special
collections

The Reverend William (Bill) Owen Harris ’54, ’57 ThM passed away on
Saturday, March 21, 2015, in Petersburg, Indiana. He was the Seminary’s first
archivist and librarian for special collections. For fourteen years, Bill worked
tirelessly to gather, organize, and care for rare books, photos, and other
materials. He organized the papers of some of the well-known figures of the
Seminary’s history and made them available for scholarly research. Bill's time as a
librarian began in 1976 at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis,
Indiana. He left CTS to become Associate Librarian and head of the library's
Genealogy and Local History Division at the Indiana State Library (1982-1988). Bill
returned to Princeton and the Seminary in 1988, serving as the Librarian for
Archives and Special Collections until his retirement in 2002. Bill maintained a
long-held and deep love for the Seminary and he will be missed.

Library Exhibit: Remembering Selma, 1965

In 1965 leaders from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee organized peaceful demonstrations to
bring national attention to the disenfranchisement of African American voters.
Twenty members of the Princeton Seminary community joined protest marches in
Alabama. Participants included students, faculty and administration, all of whom
were involved in every stage of the coordinated events. After police assaults,
students collected funds and formed a joint student-faculty “Ad Hoc Committee on
Civil Rights” that kept the movement alive and in keeping with its ultimate goals.
James J. Reeb, a member of the Class of 1953, was murdered in the violence in Selma.
An exhibit on the first floor of the library honors the sacrifice and memory of all
who marched. For more information, visit

New library search engine, Summon, launched

On February 2, 2015 Princeton Theological Seminary Library launched Summon
Search, a kind of library search engine that includes records for books, articles,
conference proceedings, theses and dissertations, videos, music, images, manuscripts
(finding aids to mss. collections), maps, and more. All the records from the library
catalog and all of the metadata records for our digital collections
(http://diglib.ptsem.edu) have been indexed into Summon. The Summon index also
includes citations from many of the journals to which we subscribe, and has records
from other publishers, government agencies, and database providers. A single search
in Summon can return records from all of these sources. Access to licensed content
to which the library subscribes requires (as always) either being on campus or
authenticating through the proxy server. (Off campus users, please make note of the
bar at the top of the Summon page containing the link "Off Campus? Log in to access
full text and more content.") To locate and search within a specific database, use
the A-Z Resource List link in the upper right of the Summon interface. The library
catalog in its native interface is still available at

Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology

Princeton Theological seminary Library has purchased access to the
Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology for both the campus community and PTS alumni/ae.
“The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology is the first attempt in more than one
hundred years to produce a replacement for John Julian’s A Dictionary of Hymnology.
That massive and remarkable work was first published by John Murray in 1892…This is
(like Julian’s Dictionary) an English-language book. We have tried to be as global
as possible, but a reference work has to be written from somewhere, and there will
no doubt be evidence of this in the finished work…The present dictionary is closer
to an Encyclopaedia than to a database.” Current PTS community members may access
this new resource at http://ptsem.libguides.com/databases-a-to-z. Alumni/ae may

and English texts are available in a modern and elegant interface, allowing readers
to browse, search, bookmark, annotate, and share content with ease." Bible in
English: "The Bible in English contains twenty versions of the Bible. In addition to

The entrance exhibit of the library celebrates the 300th anniversary of the
birth of British evangelist George Whitefield, one of the most noted preachers of
his day and a key figure in the “Great Awakening” of the mid-18th century. Of
particular note, the exhibit features the personal journal of Whitefield, kept
between October 17, 1744 and August 7, 1746. It also contains a copy of the first
edition of the autobiographical account of his early life and the beginnings of his
ministry, published in 1740, and of a hymnal he compiled in 1756. A digital exhibit,

Calvinist renaissance that took place at the conclusion of the nineteenth century
and the beginning of the twentieth in The Netherlands. He was perhaps the most
prolific public intellectual of his day. The Digital Library of Abraham Kuyper
contains Kuyper's complete archive (over 100,000 pages), along with a comprehensive
collection of his published works. This project has been developed in cooperation
with the Historical Documentation Centre for Dutch Protestantism at the Vrije
Universiteit Amsterdam, where the physical archive is housed. Digital Initiatives at
Princeton Theological Seminary Library makes digitized library resources accessible
to researchers worldwide by developing innovative software systems for discovering,
searching, and viewing those resources.

Explore the Library's Reference Collection with online subject guides

Comprised of nearly 10,000 volumes, the reference collection contains
general tools frequently consulted in theological study: dictionaries,
encyclopedias, directories, almanacs, atlases, and handbooks. It features a broad
array of bibliographical resources, including indexing tools, union lists, catalogs
of specialized libraries, and national, trade, and subject bibliographies.
Increasing the richness and value of the collection is the inclusion of primary
texts essential to the Christian tradition and a core collection of Biblical
commentaries. Included as well are certain texts which are so comprehensive in their
treatment of a subject and so well indexed that they function as reference tools.
Reference books do not circulate and, if used outside of the reference area, must be
returned to the reference reshelving cart when the patron leaves the library.
Subject guides for the reference collection — including Biblical Studies, Church
History, Church in the World, Practical Theology, and Theology — are available
online. Just follow the link in this post.

Library receives copy of King's 'Letter from Birmingham City Jail'

The Princeton Theological Seminary Library was presented with a copy of
Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham City Jail by the Board of Directors
of the Princeton Family YMCA during a Friday evening reception October 10 in the
Iain R. Torrance Atrium. The Letter, along with an inscribed copy of Dr. King’s last
book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? was found by a Seminary student
working at the Y. The book was presented to the Princeton Public Library during the
reception, with Library Director Leslie Burger accepting the presentation. “Dr. King
was, as Andrew Young has said, the voice of the century and hopefully the reading
and re-reading of this Letter as of other of his writings will advance the inclusive
community he sought. This presentation recognizes community relationships in
Princeton that we are proud to be a part of as we work to collect, preserve, and
present the cultural record, and we are most grateful for this gift,” says Donald M.
Vorp, James Lenox Librarian who accepted the presentation on behalf of the
Library.

For Seminarians, church educators, the Reigner collection is an invaluable
resource

As the Christian Education Library, the Reigner Reading Room holds a fine
collection of materials for the practice and understanding of the educational
ministry of the Church and is designed to provide a wide and current range of
Christian education resources for the Seminary community and the wider public to
use. Special curriculum events and teaching and learning seminars are planned
periodically for the benefit of the community. The Reigner Reading Room opened in
North Hall on the Tennent Campus in 1953, moved to Speer Library in 2004, was
temporarily in Luce Library, and is now located on the second floor of the new
library in Room 2050. The Christian Education and Congregational Liaison Librarian,
Sarita Ravinder, may be reached by phone at 609.497.7916 or via email. Curriculum
and juvenile books are located in Room 2050; the rest of the Reigner collection is
located in the open stacks on the second floor near the microform

Trials and Pilot Projects: 20th Century Religious Thought, Vol. I

From now through June 30, 2014, the library is trialing access to Alexander
Street Press' "Twentieth Century Religious Thought: Volume I, Christianity."
According to the publisher, "[t]he inaugural collection of this multi-volume
religious series shares diverse perspectives on Christianity. It gathers the seminal
works and archival materials related to key worldwide religious thinkers from the
early 1900s until the turn of the 21st century and incorporates voices from
previously marginalized groups, including key feminist scholars." A Princeton
Theological Seminary network ID is required in order to access this resource, unless
you are using a PTS workstation on campus. The library is dedicated to supporting
the Seminary community's study, research, and teaching work while practicing good
stewardship of Seminary resources. Toward that goal, the trials and pilot projects

put the books/DVDs that you found particularly helpful, inspiring, valuable or
entertaining in the Awesome Box rather than the regular book drop. The item(s) will

often awesome titles, and to subscribe to an RSS feed

privacy? The Awesome Box is completely anonymous; all that appears online is the

Open Access Week: October 21-27, 2013

In its sixth year, Open Access Week is an “opportunity for the academic and
research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access,
to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider
participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research”
(http://www.openaccessweek.org). The Open Access (OA) movement promotes free digital
access to scholarly material (published and unpublished), research data, and
research results. Working scholars may want to take some time this week to
familiarize themselves with issues around OA, how it has transformed copyright,
collaboration, and publishing models in other disciplines like science and medicine,
and to reflect on the potential OA offers scholars in theology and religion.
Princeton Theological Seminary Library has several open access projects: the
Theological Commons, a digital library of 76,717 books and journals on theology and
religion; Princeton Seminary Journals, A digitized collection of journals published
by, or closely associated with, Princeton Theological Seminary from 1825 to the
present; and others. View our digital projects by following the link in this

Construction update, September 2013

As the stone work for the entry tower nears completion beginning on Tuesday
September 3rd the construction team for the project will begin to relocate the
staging "lay down" area from the front of the library to the rear of the building.
This will allow for the remaining plaza pavers and landscape to be installed, along
with the clean up of the entire south side. We anticipate this work to be finished
by late September to early October. During this time the entrance to the library
will be the same as it is now, only accessible from the parking lot (east) side. The
mid section of Armstrong Place at the rear of the library will be closed while the
final section of north stone work for the new building continues. All library
parking lots will be accessible from either the Stockton Street or Library Place
driveways. Please use caution when driving or walking near the site. – German

Digital Bookplates and Princeton Theological Seminary Library

As you enter the library, you may notice the digital bookplates program
exhibit in the display case just across from the Service Desk. Princeton Theological
Seminary Library’s Digital Bookplates program, inspired by Brown University
Library’s innovative model, provides a means of recognizing and expressing
appreciation for the Library’s friends and donors. Replacing traditional paper
bookplates which historically have been glued into the front of physical books,
digital bookplates appear as a link in the Library’s catalog record and in the
Digital Bookplates Gallery on the Library website. Digital bookplates are currently
generated through two library donor programs: Adopt a Book, which sponsors the
digitization of a particular volume or collection. Donors are recognized by name on
the shared annual Adopt a Book digital bookplate; and Annual membership at the
“Donor” or “Benefactor” level in the Friends of the Princeton Theological Seminary
Library. Donors and Benefactors receive an individual digital bookplate in their
name or in honor of someone else. The digital bookplate designs have been
commissioned by the Library to a local Princeton artist with a history of capturing
the Seminary’s unique campus. Currently, two series of bookplates are available:
Series 1: PTS Library Buildings. Original watercolor drawings of the five historic
and current Seminary library buildings, from 1843 to the present. Series 1 drawings
will be used to honor Friends of the Princeton Theological Seminary Library; and
Series 2: Princeton Related Images. Three watercolor drawings of other PTS campus
scenes, and the U.S.S. Princeton. Series 2 will be used to honor Adopt a Book
donors. All of the digital bookplate designs currently available were created by
local artist, Sergio Bonotto. The pen and ink drawings are reproduced by a special
process on rough textured paper and then each print is water colored by hand. This
produces unique originals, no two of them being the same. Carefully executed water
colored prints were popular in the nineteenth century, but are seldom seen today due
to the time and skill necessary to produce them. Many thanks to Princeton
Theological Seminary Library Metadata Specialist Cortney Frank and Collection
Services Assistant Marleen Cohen for assembling this exhibit.

The second floor exhibit cases outside the Alumni/ae Room in the new
library currently hold a selection of books and artifacts from the Seminary’s
Special Collections representing religious and cultural traditions from around the
world. Many of the items were collected by Samuel M. Zwemer (long-time missionary to
the Muslim world and Professor of Christian Missions and the History of Religion at
Princeton Theological Seminary from 1929 to 1937) for a “Museum of Religion and
Missions” which was located in Stuart Hall from the 1930s until the 1950s. A number
of the African items in the last case were the gift of Eva and Fred Christian. Fred
Christian served on the Board of Trustees of Princeton Seminary form 1965 until
1982. Eva Christian grew up on the mission field in South Africa. Images from the

New Library building to open in time for 2013 Commencement

February 13, 2013 - After conferring with President Barnes and others on
the library construction team, I am writing to inform you that we now expect the new
library building to open in May in time for Commencement. Delays with certain New
Jersey State approvals and slow stone production have affected the completion date
of the atrium and the exterior. It does not make sense to open up a portion of the
new facility and subject patrons to ongoing construction noise and dust. We will be
able to provide a safe and operationally efficient building with the extension of
time. Until we can get into the new building in May, library service will continue
to be provided in Luce Library, including access to course reserves, the Reference
Collection, and the paging of books from the new building. Donald M. Vorp, James
Lenox Librarian, Princeton Theological Seminary

Reading list for Black History Month

Over the next few weeks in honor of Black History Month, I'll be posting
some titles from our collection that you may like to explore. Some will be general
reading, some a bit more intense, some for children (from the Christian Education
collection in the Reigner Reading Room). I'll keep all of the titles posted on our
Facebook page as well (Princeton Theological Seminary Library). Remember to check
the call number ranges highlighted on the Library's Maps and Directions page to see

Library/CAN Hurricane Sandy relief effort concludes

The Community Action Network of PTS is happy to report that volunteer
efforts have provided enough donations to the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean
Counties to fill needs until March. Thus, PTS CAN has closed the Sandy Relief
Effort, and the Library will no longer collect food donations. In the meantime, CAN
continues its ongoing project of collecting funds for HomeFront (an organization
that works to keep families in their homes in Trenton area). Thanks to student
Maggie Elwell, who connected the Library to student-run CAN, and to Mary Astarita,
Casper Cheng, Mike Nahmias, and Beverley Williams for all their hard work. And, of
course, thanks to all who made donations of food. Many of you donated multiple
times. Job well done!

Coming Soon!

Through an ongoing joint effort with the Department of Information
Technology, the Library has been making improvements to the organization and
functionality of its web site, a project driven by the student and faculty responses
received in the November 2011 LibQual Survey on library services and resources. The
bulk of the redesign project was unveiled at the start of the Fall 2012 term and was
followed up by a period of user experience testing by students, faculty, staff,
alumni/ae, and other Library users. As we prepare to start a new semester, the
Library looks forward to presenting a new home page crafted in response to your
input. Once the new version of its home page is up, the Library will provide a
virtual tour/tutorial of the new site, as well as other online learning materials
highlighting library resources. Many thanks to all who provided feedback – whether
through the in-person user experience testing focus group or the brief online
survey. Since the feedback was received, the comments and suggestions you made have
been at the heart of our ongoing effort to improve your experience using the Library
web site. If you have any comments you would like to share as redesign work
continues, please contact us at libweb@ptsem.edu. Donald M. Vorp, James Lenox

The paging system for retrieving library materials begins Friday, January
4, 2013. All requests must include the title and call number of the item(s) being
requested. To submit paging requests online, look up the item in the online library
catalog and then click the "Request" button. Requests may also be made via email, by
phone (609-497-7940), or in-person when you are in the Luce Library. Please use an
orange paging slip for in-person requests. Materials will be paged three times a
day, Monday-Friday: 9 a.m., 12 noon, 3 p.m. Paging will not be possible in the
evening or on week-ends since the building is still a construction site operating
under the hours of construction. Requested materials can be picked up at the Luce

Book paging service to begin January 2, 2013

There has been a change in the start date of the Library book move. William
B. Meyer, the re-location company handling the move, has advised the Library that it
is not efficient for them to begin a project of this magnitude on December 19,
especially since the loading dock of the new building is not yet available to permit
delivery of offsite books. Because Meyer’s management of the project involves their
re-locating workers to the Princeton area, they are asking that the move be started
on January 2 to allow for the holiday schedule and a more efficient operation. This
means that between now and then you may still go to the shelves in the Luce Library
to get any books you may need. Beginning January 2, 2013, the Library will make a
paging service available for book retrieval.

name. To search across multiple databases, use the check box to the left of the
database name to select those you wish to explore. Let us know what you think about
this new interface. UPDATE: Federated searching is now provided through

2008

The purpose of this conference is to explore the resources and ideas
characteristic of neo-Calvinist political thought with the aim of critically
examining their relevance to contemporary debates about religion and politics in a
secular society. Paper proposals are invited on any aspect of Kuyper's conception of
Calvinism, but will be especially welcome if they explicitly address the idea of
civil society as a set of sovereign spheres that together constitute a crucial
counterbalance to both radical individualism and political statism.

Announcing the Digital Library of Karl Barth

In association with the Theologischer Verlag Zurich (TVZ) and Princeton
Theological Seminary, Alexander Street Press is pleased to offer the first major
online collection of Karl Barth's works. Combining comprehensiveness with a
carefully crafted set of text-analysis tools, The Digital Karl Barth Library will
support a new generation of research into the works of one of the twentieth
century's most influential theologians. The current release features the first 36
volumes of Barth's Gesamtausgabe, originally published under the TVZ imprint. Among
the works included in the Gesamtausgabe are hundreds of letters, sermons, lectures,
conversations, and academic writings. New content, including Barth's monumental
Kirchliche Dogmatik, will be added on a quarterly basis. The Digital Library of Karl
Barth is currently accessible to all students at Princeton Theological
Seminary.

Reigner hosts a discussion of the workshop rotation model!

The Workshop/Rotation Model: Is It Right for Your Church School Program?
The Workshop/Rotation Model for church school has been around for more than ten
years, yet it is new for many churches. What is it? Can it work at my church? These
are two frequently asked questions. The workshop will address both questions in an
exploration of how one church has successfully used this creative model in its
Christian Education program. The pros and cons of this way of doing church will also
be considered.

Call for Papers: International Journal of Public Theology

The "International Journal of Public Theology" invites submissions for
future issues of IJPT. The journal is published four times per year by Brill and is
affiliated with the Global Network for Public Theology. (The Kuyper Center is a
participant in the Global Network.) Public theology is the result of the growing
need for theology to interact with public issues of contemporary society. It seeks
to engage in dialogue with different academic disciplines such as politics,
economics, cultural studies, religious studies, as well as with spirituality,
globalization and society in general. The IJPT is a platform for original
interdisciplinary research in the field of public theology. Click the link above for

Searching for 1998 and 2002 Abraham Kuyper event posters

The Abraham Kuyper Center for Public Theology is in the process of organizing an archive of posters related to all its past events. It has come to our attention that we do not have a copy of the poster for the first Abraham Kuyper Consultation, "Common Grace: Theology, Ecology, and Technology," which was held on February 2, 2002. Also, we have only a single copy of the Abraham Kuyper Centennial Conference poster (the 1998 Stone Lectures poster) . Should anyone reading this note happen to have a copy of the 1998 or the 2002 event poster, we would heartly appreciate their donation to our archives. If you can help us, please e-mail special.collections@ptsem.edu

New Access to PTS Papyri through APIS

Twelve Oxyrhynchus papyri housed in the Special Collections of the
Princeton Theological Seminary Library are now included in the APIS (Advanced
Papyrological Information System) database hosted by Columbia University. All the
available information on the PTS papyri is publicly accessible on APIS. These papyri
(which include, inter alia, three LXX fragments, two NT fragments, a fourth-century
fragment of Isocrates, and several fascinating documentary papyri) constitute a
small but important collection. The APIS records include data from the original
published editions of Grenfell and Hunt, handwritten notes by Professors William
Park Armstrong and Bruce Manning Metzger, and other notes as well.

An introduction to our Latin American Periodical Collection by Prof. Luis N.
Rivera-Pagan!

Last October, a friend died in Puerto Rico and I was asked to go home and
preach a memorial homily to celebrate his life of commitment to the Reign of God.
Drafting the sermon, I remembered that a small book, published 1965 in Rio Piedras,
Puerto Rico, included a contribution of his on theological education in Latin
America. I went to Princeton Theological Seminary (PTS) library and, eureka! there
was a copy of the book. It also happens to be the first book ever edited by Justo L.
