8 Social-Media Sins That Are Sure to Get You Unfriended and Unfollowed

According to a recent social-media engagement study, Americans now spend more time on social media than any other Internet activity, including email. Social media isn’t going anywhere and businesses, small and large, are now recognizing their online presence is an essential part of their marketing strategy. Eight out of 10 small to medium-sized businesses now use social media to drive growth for their business, and three out of five say they’ve gained new customers through social media marketing.

There’s no denying social media is an excellent tool to interact with customers and clients, but simply posting something on social media for the sake of being active online isn’t enough. If you aren’t careful, your constant retweets and oversharing can quickly get you an “unfollow.”

These 8 habits are sure to alienate you on social media:

1. Always Selling

This is one of the worst social-media pet peeves, says Brian Paldin, CEO of the social-media marketing company, The Razzi Group. Social media is a conversation, says Paldin, and no one wants to talk to a salesman. Posting only when you have something to promote is a quick way to get your company unfriended or unfollowed.

Instead, Paldin recommends interspersing sales pitches with photos of your company party, quotes, blog posts, links to articles with content that provides value to your followers rather than constant promotional sales posts.

2. Overposting

Posting the same type of messages multiple times a day is a sure-fire way to alienate your audience. Lysa Miller, owner of Ladybugz Interactive Agency in Boston, a web-design and social-media strategy agency for small businesses, recommends posting relevant content once or twice a day. No one wants to see a dozen photos a day of pizzas from the restaurant they followed on Twitter, but they may be interested in a new recipe (posted once, not three times a day).

3. Oversharing

Sharing info from other sites can be an annoyance to your followers. Avoid sharing articles from aggregate news sites such as BuzzFeed, as these don’t show any originality to your business and are shared too many times online by individuals.

“People don’t want to see a business oversharing those kinds of viral stories because they’re going to see that content from their friends,” says Miller.

4. Lack of Original Content

“Customers need to know you’re interesting enough to follow,” says Miller. Retweeting other people’s messages or posting articles from other sites doesn’t tell the consumer what your company is about and shows a lack of originality. Paldin says once every two days is a good time to retweet or share content that isn’t yours. Focus on creating original content, such as a blog post on your website or a portfolio item you can share with followers.

5. Not Having a Strategy

“Posting random links and content just to put something up is not a good idea,” says Miller. Create a calendar of posts you want to share in advance, leaving room for some last minute additions.

“When you’re messaging people, you need to know what that message is and you need to plan that out in advance,” says Miller.

The best way to create a strategy is to look at who your customers are and find out what their needs and wants are related to your business. Paldin has even done surveys for some companies in order to create a social-media strategy, asking followers to tell him the type of content they would like to see on the company’s social-media channels. When creating your social-media strategy, think about how the information you share is going to help your customers be loyal to your business.

6. Unnecessary Tagging

This is just bad social etiquette, says Paldin. “You shouldn’t be tagging people in photos or in posts that are not associated with them.” While tagging people in a picture or a post may help you to increase the post’s visibility, it’s a fast way to annoy people and will quickly get you an “unfollow.”

7. Being Disengaged with Followers

“If you’re looking to get your customers to continue to follow you, you need to pay attention to what they’re doing,” says Paldin. Since the whole idea of social media is to engage with customers, Paldin recommends following people when they follow you, like their photos, ask questions and always respond when they reach out to you. “What’s the point of having 10,000 followers if you only have two percent engagement? Wouldn’t you rather be a company with 1,000 followers but 10 percent engagement?” says Paldin.

8. Reposting Too Much

Sending the same link 10 times a day may increase your click-through rate, but it can also annoy followers who see your reposts as digital clutter. “People want to see activity when they scroll through your feeds and your comments,” says Paldin. But if the activity is all the same message, they’re going to see you as annoying.

How to Use Google Analytics Custom Segments, Reports and Dashboards

Google Analytics lets you create custom segments, dashboards and reports to find the information that’s most relevant to your business.

In this article I’m going to show you how to use these Google Analytics features.

Discover how to customize Google Analytics dashboards, reports and segments.

#1: Custom Segments

Segments let you isolate specific traffic throughout Google Analytics. For example, let’s say that you want to learn about all of the traffic your website receives from Facebook. You can do that using a segment.

How to Set Up a Custom Segment

To get started, go to your website’s profile in Google Analytics. Under the title of any standard report, such as the Audience Overview, there’s an option to Add Segment.

When you click on Add Segment, you’re able to see all of your current segments and the red New Segment button.

To create your segment, click the New Segment button and give it a name you’ll recognize, such as Facebook Traffic. Then click on the Traffic Sources tab, and in the Source field, enter ‘facebook’. It should look like this when you’re finished.

Click the Preview button to see if your segment finds traffic based on the configuration you’ve created, which in this case is traffic from Facebook. If it does,click Save and it’s automatically applied to your Google Analytics view.

Now you can continue to click through all of your standard reports, such as the Audience Overview, and see data specifically related to your Facebook Traffic segment.

Using Custom Segments

Here are a few examples of the data analyses you can do with segments:

See the geographic location of your Facebook traffic with the Audience > Geo > Location report.
Distinguish the specific sources of your Facebook traffic (mobile versus desktop) with the Acquisition > All Traffic report.
Find out what content your Facebook traffic likes the most with the Behavior > Site Content > All Pages report.
Discover how well your Facebook traffic converts toward specific goalswith the Conversions > Goals > Overview report.

You can also compare traffic from different segments.

Let’s say you want to look at all of your reports to see the differences between your Facebook and Twitter traffic. Using the steps outlined above, set up a Twitter Traffic segment.

Next, make sure you have both segments selected at the top of your reports. You will then be able to see all of the data in your standard reports with Facebook Traffic highlighted in one color and Twitter Traffic highlighted in another.

Now you can go through all of your reports to see the differences in both sources of traffic.

In addition to isolating traffic from specific sources, you can set up segments to see traffic:

From specific demographics
From users with specific technology
With specific behavior
That completes specific ecommerce purchases

And you can set up segments using any other dimensions or metrics you choose.

For example, publishers that want to isolate the traffic of one particular article can set up an Advanced Conditions segment using the Behavior > Page dimension and entering the URL of the article in the field.

Now you can view all Google Analytics data for a particular article, from demographics to conversions.

You can configure multiple dimensions and metrics in one segment, so if you want to isolate Facebook traffic from the United States representing females in the 18-24 age group in one segment, you can.

Or if you want to isolate all of the traffic from the top social media networks in one segment and all of the traffic from the top search engines in another segment to compare them, you can. The possibilities are endless.

#2: Custom Reports

Instead of relying on the standard reports provided by Google Analytics, you can simply create your own to show the data you’re interested in.

How to Set Up a Custom Report

You can find custom reports in the Customization menu at the top of Google Analytics.

The easiest way to understand how to create a custom report is to first understand the basics of creating a standard report. Let’s take the Acquisition > All Traffic report as a base.

To create a custom report that mimics the All Traffic report, start by giving the report the title All Traffic. Then rename the first report tab Summary and select Explorer as the report type. This gives you the graph at the top of the report and table at the bottom.

Name the first metric group Basic Metrics. Click the Add Metric button to add Sessions, % New Sessions, Users, Bounce Rate, Pages / Session, Avg. Session Duration, Goal Conversion Rate, Goal Completions and Goal Value as metrics. If you start by typing the names in the search box, you’ll find each metric quickly.

Click the Add Metric Group button to add a second metric group and name it Ecommerce. Then click the Add Metric button to add Transactions, Revenue and Ecommerce Conversion Rate as metrics for the Ecommerce metric group.

Next, by Dimension Drilldowns, click the Add Dimension button to add Source/Medium.

Continue clicking the Add Dimension button to add Source, Medium and Keyword. Once you’re finished, click the Save button.

You will then be taken to a new custom report similar to the standard All Traffic report.

Using Custom Reports

Now that you have a good feel for what will go where in a custom report, you can create any report you choose.

After you create your reports, you can use the Shortcut option in the menu under the report name to create a shortcut to access your custom report in the left sidebar of Google Analytics.

You can use the Export option in the menu under the report name to download your custom report in a format of your choosing.

The Email option in the menu under the report name lets you email the custom report to a specific email address in the format of your choosing once or on a regular basis.

Emailing custom reports to yourself is a great way to remember to check important Google Analytics data on a regular basis.

#3: Custom Dashboards

If you prefer viewing your Google Analytics data in a dashboard, you can create custom dashboards full of widgets with specific Google Analytics data. This way, you get the data you want, exactly how you want it.

To create your custom dashboard, click on the New Dashboard link under Dashboards in the left sidebar menu of Google Analytics (above your standard reports menu items).

You will have the option to create a Blank Canvas (empty) dashboard or a Starter Dashboard with example widgets.

Begin with the Starter Dashboard. This will give you some widgets to experiment with. You can hover over each of the widgets and click the pencil icon to edit them.

This will allow you to see how each of the widget types are created.

As you can see, you can create custom widgets in different formats to pull normal data, as well as real-time visitor data. You can add specific dimensions and metrics based on the widget format you have chosen and even link it to standard or custom reports within Google Analytics for more information.

From here, you can modify widgets in your Starter Dashboard or begin to create your own widgets in a new Blank Canvas dashboard using the Add Widget button in the menu below your dashboard name.

You can also format your dashboard’s column layout using the Customize Dashboard menu item.

Experiment with different formats and data until you find the perfect collection of dashboards that give you all of the data you want on one screen.

Using Custom Dashboards

Similar to custom reports, you have the option to export your dashboard as a PDF and have it emailed to you on a regular basis.

You can use this option to email standard dashboard data, as well as real-time dashboards, to yourself on a daily or weekly basis.

Bonus Tip: Third-Party Dashboards

The one thing you can’t do with Google Analytics dashboards is see data from more than one website in one dashboard at a time. If you own or manage multiple websites, having a dashboard with basic Google Analytics data for all of those websites is a huge timesaver.

To accomplish this, use a third-party tool called Cyfe to create a Google Analytics dashboard with data from all of your websites on one screen. For example, you can create a block of overview widgets that shows your pageviews, sessions and users.

You can even set up reports to be emailed to you on a regular basis with all of your Google Analytics widgets for your websites.

This is a great option if you have multiple websites or want to view your Google Analytics data alongside widgets with social media and other business data.

How to Get More Custom Segments, Reports and Dashboards

The Google Analytics Solution Gallery is full of custom segments, reports and dashboards created by other Google Analytics users. To view them, click the Import from Gallery button in the Segments, Reports and Dashboards sections of Google Analytics.

You can filter segments, reports and dashboards by category from Acquisition to Paid Search or use the search box to find segments by keyword. When you find one you want, click the Import button beneath it to add it to your own Google Analytics account.

Likewise, there’s also an option to share a link to your custom asset with someone else directly or have your asset added to the Google Analytics Solutions Gallery.

Note that when you share a segment, report or dashboard, you share the structure only. Rest assured no one will receive your actual Google Analytics data when you do this.

First of all you have to get an access token from your facebook account. This token will allow you to access the data from your account on FB.

Here is how to get it:

Go to https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer

Step 2:

When you see the Graph API Explorer as below, select from the dropdown menu and change API Version to “Unversioned“.

Step 3:

Click on “Get Access Token” button and you will see the below pop-up window. Under “User Data Permissions” tab, select all the options (by clicking on check boxes). Do not click on any other button but you should now click on “Friends Data Permissions” tab.

In this chapter, you'll find 12 tried-and-true templates that content writers have used successfully for years. These templates are invaluable for finding the right structure for the type of content you're creating.

Why is this important? Because when it comes to communicating your ideas, the way you organize and present them is as important as your ability to put them into words.

In most cases, one of these templates will suffice. What's more, these templates work for video and audio content as well as written.

So each time you begin a project — no matter what type of content it is — after gathering research and developing your ideas, review these templates to find the best structure for your particular message. Then all you have to do is plug in your ideas and develop each section.

What are the 12 structures?

For short content, you can use one of these formats as you see them here. For longer content, you may mix and match them. For instance, your overall project may be a thought leadership piece, but individual chapters may use other formats, such as how-to, case study, or interview.

When it comes to content creation, variety adds to the overall impact of your content. So don't settle for just one or two. Experiment. Try different formats. And enjoy the creative process.

Let's take a look at each of them now.

EXAMPLE

Sometimes the point you want to make is simple enough to express in your introduction. The real value is in the examples you provide, showing your readers how other people have applied the information you share.

When that's the case, try an example post.

Readers love this type of article because they can see many examples in one place, without having to do the research themselves.

Title it right

The title often includes a number, such as 10 ways to show your inner geek, or 5 types of tiles you'll love in your kitchen.

In the article, you can number your examples or not. It's up to you. So how do you structure an example post?

INTRODUCE YOUR TOPIC

Tell people what you're talking about and why they'll be interested in it.
GIVE AN EXAMPLE

The subhead may be the product name, as in this example from Houzz.com.

Or it could be a method or concept. This one, from Mashable, gives a general idea, followed by a specific resource:

Pictures aren't necessary in the Example format, but if your example is visual, pictures can help clarify your points.
EVALUATE IT

After you give an example, talk about it. Include a few sentences about why you like it (or don't like it), why it works, or how your readers can get it.
REPEAT WITH REMAINING EXAMPLES

Follow the same format for all your examples. There is no right number of examples to use. We've seen posts that focused on two examples, and we've seen posts that give 20 or more.

In general, in short-form content, the fewer examples you provide, the longer (or more detailed) your evaluation. In long-form content, you have the space to provide a lot of examples and in-depth evaluation.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

Many example posts leave this off. But you can make your content stand out if you'll wrap it up for your readers. End your article with:
- A summary of the examples you've shown.
- Your opinion.
- Advice to your readers.
- A question.
Then include your call to action. Ask for comments or social shares. Or tell people to visit another page on your website.

POINT-ILLUSTRATION-EXPLANATION (PIE)

This type of content is very similar to the Example post above. But in this type of content, you aren't simply sharing examples of your point. You're making statements about your topic.

Each section provides another point, which is then illustrated and discussed.

INTRODUCE YOUR TOPIC

Tell people what your topic is and why it matters.
MAKE YOUR FIRST POINT ABOUT YOUR TOPIC.

Try to find a quick and easy way to summarize your point. This summary statement will be your subhead. If you like, number your points.

This particular post draws examples from different brands advertising online. So it includes the source at the end of the point.
ILLUSTRATE IT.

If you have an image, include it under your subhead.

This example makes a point about product descriptions, so the illustration is words, not a graphic. That's okay. Simply take a screen shot of your example and post it as your illustration.
1. If you use a screenshot of words, check readability before you publish. If the words in your illustration aren't readable, forget the screen shot. Quote your source instead.
2. For screen shots, you can use Microsoft's Accessory, "Snipping Tool."

EXPLAIN IT.

Include a paragraph or two that expand on your point. Give an explanation. Then give a practical tip on how your readers can implement it.
REPEAT WITH REMAINING PIE SECTIONS.

Follow this same format for all your points.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

This type of article needs a strong close. So make sure you tell your readers why your topic is important and what it means in their own lives.
- Promise more information.
- Make a forecast.
- If at all possible, take your point one step further.
Then, as always, give a call to action.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP (SYLLOGISM)

If you want to share a new idea, one of the best ways to get people on board is to create a logical argument that leads people to arrive at the same conclusion you have.

With this type of post, you don't start with your main point. You start with something your readers already know and accept.

Then you build on that idea using the logical framework of a syllogism.

If your first point (A) means this (B). And if this (B) means that (C), then you must consider that as a real possibility.

INTRO

With this type of content, you want to start with something engaging. Perhaps a story, an interesting thought, or a startling statement.
IF A = B

Begin your first section with a topic or idea that your readers already accept. Then tie it to your second idea. Use research, stories, or logic to make a strong connection and back up your ideas.
AND B = C

In the next section, take your idea one step further. Tie it to your main point. Make it a natural progression of your opening idea.
THEN A = C

Now make your final point. Make it clear that this is a logical extension of the known fact (A) that you started with. If possible, use research or a story to support your statements.
ADDITIONAL POINTS

You may need some additional discussion to bring home your final point. Now that you're on topic, you can add those thoughts here.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

Give a strong conclusion. You now have your readers thinking. Give them something to chew on.

Then give your call to action. It's a good idea to ask for comments after this type of post. Then take the time to respond. People are more likely to engage with you if they know you'll answer their comments.

THE INVERTED PYRAMID STRUCTURE

You may recognize this as the standard format used by journalists over the last century.

It was developed when writers delivered their stories via telegraph. And it was ideally suited to print because the main idea was given in the first paragraph of a story — which meant an editor could cut an article to fit whatever space was available.

But those days are over.

We now live in a digital world. We send messages via email, not telegraph. We publish digital books and magazines, which have no paper-size restrictions.

This format is losing its popularity, but it's still an accepted structure for news-style articles. So if you're writing a press release or news announcement, this may be a good option for you.

THE LEAD

The traditional inverted pyramid press release starts out with all the facts: who, what, where, when, why and how.

If you're writing for a news service, include this information in your first sentence or two.

If you're writing for a blog, jazz it up a bit. Give the information, but make it interesting. Lead with an unusual fact or statistic. Then give all the required information.
SECOND MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The inverted pyramid is aptly named. Each successive paragraph gives information that's less relevant to the overall point.

So tell your story from most important facts to least important.

You can keep the middle of the article interesting by introducing a bit of story, a specific example, or interesting news relevant to the story.
QUOTE TO BACK UP YOUR CLAIMS

Include quotes from your key sources.
PRESENTATION OF FACTS IN DWINDLING LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE

As you near the end of the article, your story will dwindle. That's because most of the important information was told in the beginning.

You will feel like your article closes with minor facts and story bits. Keep the interest level high by sharing an interesting quote or a concluding thought that is inspired by your news.
BOILERPLATE CLOSE/CALL TO ACTION

Most press releases end with a "boilerplate," or short paragraph about the company or brand being written about.

Traditionally, the call to action is a link to your website or landing page.

THE INTERVIEW

An interview is viewed as a high-value piece of content. That's because it shares inside information that most people don't have access to.

Most interviews these days include audio or video as well as the written transcript. But you can still publish a written interview without media.

Format it in whatever way suits you and your readers. Do be aware, though, that just posting a video or audio file doesn't optimize your content page. So even if you opt for a video or podcast, add written content to go with your media.

AS A MEDIA POST

Provide a choice of digital downloads for the live interview. Then present a transcript of the interview for readers.

NOTE:

Even if you give a digital download of the interview, you need to provide written content for SEO purposes. So the template we provide below assumes you'll present the interview in written format.

Don't be afraid to mix it up. Add media and images to add interest to your page.

INTRODUCE YOUR INTERVIEWEE.

Open the article by introducing your interviewee. Give background information about him or her. Then introduce the general topic of your interview.
ASK QUESTION.

If you're going for a written format, pose your question.
- You can put each speaker's name in bold, followed by their questions or comments.
- You can put a big Q, followed by the questions, and a big A, followed by the answer.
- You can highlight the questions and print the answers in normal text.
RECORD THE ANSWER.

Transcribe your interviewee's comments in full.
REPEAT TILL DONE.

Keep listing questions and answers until the interview is done.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

Wrap up your interview with some kind words about your interviewee, or consider highlighting one of the comments in the interview.

If the interviewee has written a book or created a product, highlight it at the end of your interview and link to it.

End with a call to action.

THE LIST

Some lists are short and some are long — we're talking 30, 50 or 100 long — but it doesn't really matter. People love lists. The longer, the better.

One of the secrets to making lists work is to include the number in your title.

While it's impressive to end with multiples of 5 or 10, don't be afraid of odd numbers. You can get more attention with 7, not 10, or 21, rather than 20 items in your list.

For a bit of fun, put your list in reverse order. Begin with the last item and work your way down to your number-one item.

INTRODUCE YOUR TOPIC.

A short introduction is fine. Simply tell people what the list is about and why the information is useful. It's okay to be a little tongue in cheek — but only if it's already part of your branded voice.
CREATE YOUR LIST.

List all the items in your list. Be creative. Make your list fun to read.
MAKE EACH ITEM IN YOUR LIST A SUBHEAD.

WRITE A SENTENCE OR
SHORT PARAGRAPH FOR EACH ITEM IN THE LIST.

Add an interesting thought, opinion or explanation.

Consider including pictures. While you don't have to include them, they definitely add interest.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

After spending time compiling your list, it's easy to stop cold when you're done.

Don't do that. Take a few extra minutes to tell your readers why the list matters. How does it help them? What new thought should they take away from it?

Give them a strong close. And don't forget your call to action.

THE LINK POST (ROUND-UP)

Link posts are a great way to add SEO value to your website. By creating Web pages that link to other pages — whether on your own website or others — you can improve your site's rank.

Here's why…

When you create Web pages that link to other high-value websites, Google may begin to see you as an authoritative site.

And when you link to your own Web pages, you can keep people on your site longer, reducing your bounce rate and increasing your page views per visit.

Do that consistently, and Google may assign you points for Trust and Authority.

With link posts, length doesn't matter. It's the basic structure that does the job. And here's how you can do it.

INTRODUCE YOUR TOPIC

Tell your readers what information you're sharing and why it's valuable.
OPTIONAL: BREAK YOUR TOPIC INTO CATEGORIES AND GIVE EACH A SUBHEAD.

If you want to include different categories of information on the same topic, this is a great way to do it.

If all your links relate to one main topic, you don't need subheads. Skip this step.
LIST THE ARTICLES YOU'RE LINKING TO AND ADD LINKS.

Most link pages just give a list of page titles, linking them to their source.

If you are using sub-categories, include a short blurb under each subhead and then paste your links under each.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

This type of post doesn't always have a conclusion. But it's always a good idea to tell your readers what to do next.
- Your conclusion may be a normal invitation to comment or share.
- You can provide a link to a landing page or contact form.
- You can tell them how to learn more about the topic.

BOOK REVIEW

Book reviews are a great way to provide thought leadership.

You can essentially be the Oprah of your community, recommending books, curating ideas, and helping people find the information they need to succeed.

As a perk, these activities also give you Trust and Authority status with search engines.

SO HOW DO YOU WRITE A BOOK REVIEW?

It's easy.

INTRODUCE THE BOOK

You can introduce the topic of the book or the book itself. Simply come up with an interesting introduction that gets people curious about the book.

In a book review, who writes the book is as important as what the book says. So do your research. Visit the author's website. Check out his or her social media. Look for an engaging story that elevates the author to celebrity status (or at least gives your something interesting to say).

If you can, combine the book review with an interview. Get some original quotes from the author to add tons of value to your book review.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR POINTS

Provide an overview of the ideas in the book. For example, if the book is divided into three sections, you could create a subhead for each section and share the major point the author makes in each.
TELL WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK.

The biggest draw to book reviews is your opinion as reviewer. So be honest. If the book over-delivers in a particular way, tell your readers.
TELL WHAT YOU DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK.

As in Step 4, give an honest review. Where does the book fall short? What would make it better?
GIVE YOUR RECOMMENDATION.

Tell your readers whether they should buy the book or not. Be sure to include a link to Amazon or other site where they can get the book.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

Your recommendation can serve as your conclusion in this type of article. But you still need to give a call to action. As in our example, give people a link to the book and tell them to check it out.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Product reviews are similar to book reviews and are an easy way for you to build authority as a solutions provider for your followers.

For instance, if a new tactic is gaining momentum in your space, and if you find a product that makes it easier to implement, you owe it to your followers to tell them about it.

You can treat product reviews like the book review above. To do that you simply introduce the product and talk about what it does and whether it's worth the purchase.

Or you can combine the product review with a how-to article and add significant value.

Provide an introduction to your topic. You can do this in two ways:
1. Introduce the problem the product solves.
2. Introduce the product and move straight to a review of how it works.

IDEA: You can turn your content into a hybrid product review/how-to by including your how-to information here. Make each step of your solution a subhead, with images and copy to provide in-depth instruction. (We'll give you a template for the how-to article in a moment.)
TELL WHAT YOU LIKE AND DON'T LIKE ABOUT IT.

As in the book review, you need to give your thoughts about the product. Tell your followers what works, what doesn't work, and why.
GIVE YOUR RECOMMENDATION.

Share your opinion. Tell your readers whether you think the product is worth the investment. If you have any tips, share them as well.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION.

If you opened your product review with a problem, you can close with the solution. That's an easy way to take your content full-circle, making your readers feel as if they got the whole story.

As always, include a call to action.

If you have a solution to a common problem, by all means, turn it into content.

Simple solutions make great blog posts or videos. But if your solution is more complicated, consider creating longer content. You can create special reports, ebooks and even multi-media programs to share your solutions.

No matter how long or short, though, you should follow the same basic structure.

INTRODUCE THE PROBLEM YOU'RE SOLVING.

Tell people about the problem. Then let them know you have a solution. Don't forget to tell them how the solution can benefit them. (It may seem obvious, but people need you to connect the dots.)
INTRODUCE THE SOLUTION AND BENEFITS OF YOUR PROCESS.

If your solution is complex, you may not be able to cover the topic in an article. Consider creating a long-form piece of content, such as a special report or ebook. Or make a video to show and tell.

In this case, it isn't too complicated, but it is a two-step problem, so the problem and solution to each side of the issue are given in separate sections.

Here is the first section.

Here is the second problem, listed under a separate subhead. Notice the parallel structure. That makes it easy for readers to see how you've organized your information.
LIST EACH STEP OF YOUR SOLUTION.

If your how-to involves actionable steps, consider numbering them. Like this:

But you don't have to number steps. You can easily just list the action, provide a screen shot or image, and then provide an explanation.

By providing the steps in order, you easily guide your reader through the process.
PROVIDE LOTS OF DETAIL.

You can organize your information as a list, numbering the steps of your solution. Or you can organize it by topic, providing a complete discussion of each problem as you introduce it.

But no matter how you organize your information, provide lots of details. The best how-to content gives step-by-step processes, graphics, and clear instructions.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION

One of the best ways to close a how-to article is to create a final subhead with the bottom-line benefit of your solution. Then tell your readers what they'll gain by taking the actions you've just outlined for them.

Focus on the benefits, and don't forget to include your call to action. In this case, it's a reminder to do it again in six month.

CASE STUDY

Case studies are a great form of mid- to deep-funnel content. They can help people understand the value of your product or service. They can also provide value for customers, helping them get the most from your products.

SUMMARIZE YOUR CASE STUDY

This is an executive summary of the study. Provide a quick overview and what you discovered.
CHALLENGE

Explain what the challenges were and what you were trying to accomplish.
SOLUTION.

At this point, you want to share the steps you used to solve the problem. Provide as much detail as possible. It may help to think of this section as a modified how-to article, providing summaries of each step implemented.

In our example, the full solution is summarized under a heading, "Campaign."

Then each step is listed as a subhead:

Each of these sections contains a description of the exact steps implemented.
RESULTS.

Next, itemize the results that were achieved. Be as specific as possible. You may include a few paragraphs of text. But be sure to include percentages of improvement. Like this:
GIVE SAMPLES AND CITE RESOURCES.

With case studies, in lieu of a standard conclusion, you can offer more information. For example, MarketingSherpa provides links to source material from their case study.

As always, try to incorporate a call to action. A few ideas:
- Invite readers to share similar problems or success stories.
- Link to a landing page that sells this same solution.
- If your case study is published as a special report or ebook, offer a discount on first-time purchase of your product or service.

MEDIA POST

Media is a great way to add variety to your content and engage followers in whatever way they prefer.

People are so busy, they don't always have time to read your content. But if you provide the same information in a podcast, they can listen to it during their daily commute or exercise session.

The type of media you produce is limited only by your imagination. Popular formats include slide shows, infographics, video and audio.

NOTE:

The biggest challenge in publishing media is SEO — because search engines can't crawl media. So be sure to optimize your content by providing written content along with your media.

INTRODUCE YOUR MEDIA.

Introduce your topic as you would with a blog post. Tell people what information you offer and how it will benefit them.
EMBED YOUR MEDIA.

Put the media file in your blog post or digital page. This is an infographic available athttp://blog.crazyegg.com/2013/02/13/art-of-the-sales-letter/
WRITE A SUMMARY OR A TRANSCRIPTION OF THE MEDIA (FOR SEO AND SCANNERS).

You need approximately 400 words of content around your media. So you have a few options here:
1. Provide a written transcript of the media file.
2. List highlights and other important points from your media file.
3. Draw excerpts from the media file, and provide them in written format.
CONCLUSION/CALL TO ACTION.

As with all other content, make a strong final point and give a call to action.

HOW TO USE THESE TEMPLATES FOR LONGER FORMATS

As we've already mentioned, the 12 formats provided in this chapter are useful for print content and media. They work equally well in blog posts, special reports, ebooks, and even full-length books.

Regardless of the length or format, you can use these same templates to structure your information — allowing you to speed up content creation and increase engagement levels.

So how do you use these formats in longer content?

ADJUST LENGTH OF EACH SECTION.

Instead of a short paragraph for your introduction, go deep. Introduce all the ideas you'll discuss in your content, then summarize your big idea or major point. It can be one page (for a short ebook) or chapter length (for a print book).

Always remember, when you work with longer copy, break up your copy into sections, each introduced by a subhead. This makes it more readable.

Your process for writing chapters is similar to the creative process we reviewed in Chapter 4.
ADJUST DEPTH OF EACH SECTION.

You have more space to get detailed in long copy. So you can introduce a topic, break it into sections and subsections, then provide in-depth research for each subsection.

In short copy, to provide the same depth, you must narrow your topic. Or if you want to talk about a broad topic, you must talk about high-level concepts, not details.
MIX AND MATCH FORMATS WITHIN THE LONG-FORM CONTENT.

The exciting thing about content marketing is that you aren't limited to written content. You are limited only by your imagination.

For example:
- Give followers a choice about how to digest your content. Offer an audio version of your written blog posts. Or create an audio book in addition to your print or digital book.
- If your how-to information is too complicated to put into words, create a video that shows and tells. Then write out your steps as a quick reference below the video.
- Combine images, screen shots and videos to illustrate your points.
- Create your ebook, not just as a PDF, but as an HTML file. Then embed videos, audio files and images to enhance its ability to communicate your points.
Don't think of content only as written words. Think of it as ideas. Then share your ideas in the way that communicates best.

Each time you start a content project, review the templates and find the best structure. Or mix and match them to create a unique format that's customized to your idea. Then get creative. Don't just say something new. Present your information in a unique way too.

Third in the ranking comes Infosys (432450 fans). While having fans for the brand is good, how the number expands is an issue of concern. As observed, growth is more in Wipro first; next in line is Infosys and then Oracle. Fan Growth rate is a factor that is crucial in determining the success of any established business. The top three companies with highest growth rates are Wipro (9.77 %), Tata Consultancy Services (7.86%) and Mindtree Ltd (7.12%). Updates from Mindtree Ltd were impressive to the audience i.e the highest engagement rate was recorded for Mindtree Ltd (14.31%). Second highest engagement rate was recorded for Infotech Enterprise Ltd (8.44%). NIIT Techonolgies Ltd come with a figure of 6.60%.

Likes are an indication of how many people have seen a particular post on Facebook and also to see if the post was impressive to them or not. Therefore they are a direct manifestation of the success of the post. Majority of the posts came from Wipro, Infosys Ltd., and Tata Consultancy services. The top three IT Companies where more traffic in the form of comments are generated by Infosys Ltd, Polaris Financial Technology and Tata Consultancy Services with an average of 695,633 and 295 comments per day respectively. Shares are used to spread messages. In terms of business, a large number of shares from the people means the information reaches a wider number of people. Therefore, it is a significant measure of the success of a post and invariably, the brand too. Quite surprisingly, Infosys has the highest number of shares even though it got lesser likes and comments. It is ahead of Oracle, which is ahead of Capgemini.

Conclusion:

From the above, it is fairly clear that Wipro has the strongest social media presence of all the IT Companies that were considered for the research. It is found to give whereabouts of the company, current projects, technical advancements etc as posts on Facebook. Wipro also conducts polls and asks questions to study customer or people’s response.

Twitter:

Twitter undoubtedly is one of the pillars of social media. With about more than billions of people active on Twitter, it is mandatory to hold a significant presence on Twitter to gain support and brand value for the business. Therefore, a considerable amount of IT industries has now set up platform on Twitter for assisting their businesses. In Twitter, the top three pages of the total number of followers belong to Oracle, HCL Technologies Ltd., and Wipro Ltd with figures 227169, 210633 and 205168 respectively. Since Twitter is mostly about tweeting and conversations, the number of tweets published in a page is a direct measure of the page’s or brands’ success in the social media platform of Twitter. All in all, statistically, it was found out that Cognizant Technology Solutions has the highest number of tweets (499), ahead of Genpact India pvt ltd. (358) which is in turn ahead of Ramco Systems (289). Finally, the top three pages based on response to queries are HCL Technologies Ltd, Hexaware Technologies Ltd and Ramco Systems in order.

Conclusion: On the basis of the above research on Twitter, no company is said to have the strongest presence as different companies have proved their significance in different measures. However, a general conclusion would be that CTS is the most active on twitter given that it has the most frequency and highest number of tweets.

LinkedIn

It is necessary for every professional to stand out in their appeal on LinkedIn to attract clients and grow network with like minded individuals. Therefore, implicitly, the motive of every business is to look appealing on LinkedIn. Although the last few years have seen many companies striving to achieve a strong presence on LinkedIn, only a few IT Companies have managed to do so. The number of followers they carry is a direct reflection of their success. Topping all IT companies, IBM, Accenture and Oracle are observed to be the most active holding as many as 1694058, 1381552 and 1024497 followers respectively. However, the above statistics does not take into account companies like iGate, Mindtree Ltd, Mphasis, L&T and Infotech.

Conclusion: Being a professional networking platform, it is imperative that these companies take LinkedIn a little seriously. The employees can list the companies they have worked for and are currently working for in their profiles, raising the credibility of their profiles and theri employers respectively. Making this practise mandtory could elevate the brand’s level greatly. Since LinkedIn mainly has CXO level individuals interacting more with updates, brands should take responsibility in managing LinkedIn Pages in exclusive and wise way. Many IT companies didn’t show any interest in showcase pages which is a novel feature of LinkedIn Company Pages. Brands should leverage showcase pages for their products / verticals and run competition amongst the verticals to compete on engagement levels.

IT Companies on Google+

Even though Google+ seems widely unpopular on the social media platforms, a lot of companies do seem to have a rather significant stand on Google+ as well. Companies have successfully reached out to people with a significant number of responses. On Google+, Accenture has the largest number of followers (19280). Following it is Congizant Technology Solutions (5526) and third, comes Wipro ltd (4064). Accenture has nearly four times the number of followers CTS and Wipro has. On grounds of +1′s, IBM ranks number one, way ahead (almost twice in number) in figure in comparison to Tata Consultancy Services and Cognizant Technology solutions. However taking everyone by surprise, even though Accenture has the largest number of followers, it is replaced by Capgemini in the number of posts. The next highest number of posts has been observed in CTS which is ahead of TCS.

Conclusion: The significance of IT is misunderstood to the common man. Social media bridges this gap. The importance of IT in social media may be missing but clearly these firms have channeled their resources and efforts to platforms like LinkedIn as their target audience is prominent there. Facebook’s significance may not be felt at this point for these IT companies as the audience is more into light content, instead of technical based content. Therefore, as can be seen from the above statistics, a large number of IT Companies are burgeoning in the social media platform, making them more involved with their people and customer base. Though their success may vary in different platforms, their root objective of establishing their brands and gaining support has been accomplished.

In keeping with the theme of new digital technologies and strategies, here are four trends every digital marketer should be thinking about for 2014.

1. Interactive video experiences

As brands push past traditional impressions and toward true engagement, applications and services take over. Take videos, for example. A short video clip is able to convey a message much more effectively than static ads can, which is why sites like YouTube are popular and why we've seen the introduction of other video platforms, such as Vine, and Instagram's new video component.

Now, imagine an interactive video experience at street level with access to social media and new impressions. With these platforms available, agencies will be experimenting with interactive content to create and share brand experiences at street level in a social digital experience.

2. Cross-screen marketingBy generating content that speaks to multiple senses—primarily sight, sound, and touch—marketers can create unique experiences that engage audiences and create more powerful connections with their brands.

Though mobile is an increasingly important part of marketing, remember that just under half of all Americans still don't have smartphones, and mobile-first and mobile-only strategies make it difficult to target the less tech-savvy consumer. The answer to this problem: cross-screen marketing.

By creating integrated campaigns across multiple screens—TV, tablet, mobile, desktop, or interactive screens at retail locations or near the point of sale—marketers can reach people without smartphones and even more effectively target consumers with one or more device. That becomes increasingly important as the more tech-savvy customers consume media through more than one screen at a time.

3. Data-driven location-based marketing

The influx of mobile devices and the introduction of wearable technologies have opened the door to a whole new world of data collection. Business Model Disruption Will Get Spikier: All the changing technology and democratization of advantages typically held only by large companies generates some real doozy business model disruptions in 2014. You might be thinking about that viral video on Amazon drone delivery, right? Nah. Too much regulatory non-sense for delivery drones to take off in 2014 (Hi-yooooh! Pun intended!).

Here’s my bet: doggie biometrics.

2. Squeeze the Marketing Cost Balloon:Spiking costs from all that content, personalization, marketing technology spend and global campaigning is really cramping your style with the CFO. Quick: CMO vs. CFO, who wins? Imagine: dog collar with accelerometer and GPS. Chip implant with biometric sensor and gyroscope. BAM! You’ve got yourself a dog spinning out a terabyte of data about barking, peeing, eating, peeing, moving, peeing and sniffing habits. And that enables pet owners to get: custom diet recommendations; pre-warning of pet illness; remote home intruder alert; and so much more! You heard it here first.

Sooooo…many CMOs will be taking drastic measures to manage marketing costs in 2014. Insource more agency activity—yes, even the strategic kinds (many will even start there as they insource). Consolidate global agency relationships. Check. Create smaller teams (euphemism alert = layoffs and restructuring). Absolutely. Makes you wonder if it really is all about the customer, doesn’t it? CFOs are such downers.

3. Head or Tail of Content Distribution—Pick One!!! A funny thing happens when content is digitized and anyone can create it and distribute it. Players in the middle get crushed. (Well, that’s not actually funny. It’s kinda sad. Circle of life.) We know this from the past 20 years watching what happened to books, music and movies. 2014 will be a year in which many marketers re-learn this lesson—only for their own brands! Too many marketing shops will have pursued content marketing, trying to be in the head of the distribution—and they’ll spend a lot of money on it. But, because brands are competing with, well, everything else for attention, only a few will actually make it into the head of the distribution. If you want a good marker for what it takes to be there, see Red Bull. 100+ full-time, dedicated content people. A wealthy Austrian billionaire with a long time horizon. Lack of quarterly earnings pressure. If that doesn’t sound like you, you’ll want to re-think your content efforts. 4. Digital Immigrants Eye the Grand Canyon, Planning for the Leap: Digital immigrants are marketing shops that didn’t grow up digital. If you’re in this group, chances are you’ve done a pretty good job making digital (or its components) individual disciplines sitting beside traditional marketing disciplines. Now, you’re looking ahead to a world where digital is flowing through everything. Sooooo, what’s it gonna take to dismantle those digital silos and re-cast your marketing chassis for that new world? 5. Somebody Will Create a Hype Game about Gamification: Oh, the irony. You know how every quarter it feels like you read about some revolutionary way to use gamification to change behavior? Well, if you believe over a hundred marketing technology practitioners who are actually putting dollars behind marketing technology, gamification is all hype. Vanishingly few marketing technologists see gamification in digital marketing as creating any kind of business value compared to alternate investments. To see which marketing technologies aren’t hype, participate in CEB’s Digital Marketing Capability benchmarking (and that completes the shameless plug trifecta).

6. Smart Brands Will Formalize Change Pre-Viz Teams: “Huh?” you say. Pre-viz is short for “pre-visualization”. Think of this as creating immersive prototypes of what the new world will look like once a change happens (or a new product or service hits). We came across one company that has a dedicated team for this. The team includes a set of folks from around the company with eclectic skill sets, a hacker mentality, and an ability to literally create visualizations (think heavy on video and experiential) of what life looks like post-change. Those visualizations help sell ideas, rally support around change (employees, customers and partners), and help provide vision for where to go. Given all the change and all the moving pieces in Marketing (and commerce!) these days, you have to ask yourself why you don’t at least have a pre-viz tiger team. Seriously. Have one.

7. Bot Traffic Becomes 135% of all Internet Traffic: I jest (it’s actually62% now). But 2014 will continue to unveil just how much digital traffic isn’t really people traffic, per se. Picking up off my 2013 trend #2 (“Digital Dog Will Discover That It In Fact Caught a Buffalo, Not a Car”), this is all in keeping with more of the shine coming off digital. And just to be clear, I’m not anti-digital. I’m not in the paid employ of the “Keep TV Analog Foundation” or anything like that. I just want us all to evaluate digital/social/mobile with clear eyes. Doing my part to be a cosmic hype counterbalance.

8. Some Brands Will Call a Tech Timeout: Others will wish they had. We’re catching wind of some large enterprise marketing teams calling a timeout on new marketing technology and platforms in 2014. These brands realize their people, process and structure are getting outstripped by the technology change. In short, they aren’t getting all the way up to the productive part of the learning curves before they get sucked into new ones. During their 2014 timeout, they plan to get their you-know-what together on all the technology changes from the last five years, before they introduce any new ones.

9. Some CIO-CMO Tandems Will Get Down to Brass Tacks: Ok, we’ve all read the glossies on CIO-CMO tandems who get along great. And they do. I believe them. It’s down below, amongst the minions, where the friction happens. So, CIO-CMO tandems who want to get stuff done will do the following to help their minions in the day-to-day:

a. Put capabilities ahead of technologies—together, they’ll think not about IT or Martech roadmaps, but about business capability roadmaps and what that means for technology.

b. Create different technology “treatment” lanes—these will formalize where IT gets involved and where it doesn’t, so as to speed marketing tech experimentation in areas where there’s low risk.

c. Identify “shallow IT” transition points—they’ll find the triggers for when IT becomes more involved to scale successful experiments.

Upload a professional image

This is your best opportunity to make a great first impression, and it is essential

to attracting connections.

Create a compelling headline

You only have 120 characters at the top of your profile to describe what you

do to the world and grab their attention. Use brief, descriptive, compelling keywords

so the right professionals on LinkedIn can discover you.

List your current position and at least two past positions

Use descriptive keywords that you quoted in your headline if possible, and be

sure to describe your role for each position.

Complete the “Summary” section of your profile

This is your chance to really describe who you are and how you help people. I

recommend that you write your summary in the third person. Otherwise, you’ll

be using the letter “I” quite a bit, which can be off-putting.

Complete the “Specialties” section of your profile

Utilize customer-focused keywords, as these are the terms that will help you

show up in search results within LinkedIn. When thinking about these keywords,

brainstorm words and phrases that people in your target markets

might search for to find someone with your background, experience, and service

offering.

Give recommendations first

Request recommendations that can be displayed on your profile. The best way

to receive recommendations is to first give them! Hint: You will need at least

three recommendations in order for LinkedIn to label your profile “completed.”

URLs. Choose the “other” option when setting up each of these links and

describe them with relevant terms. For example, rather than using the terms

“my website,” I use “Smart Social Pro Blog.” Not only is this more descriptive,

but it also gives me a better opportunity to rank for these keywords in search

engines.

3)Include a link to your Twitter profile

You can have more than one Twitter account listed. Give folks an additional

method to use to connect with you!

4)Make your entire LinkedIn profile publicly visible to everyone

You want other professionals on LinkedIn to be able to find you and contact

you anytime. Being invisible won’t help you build your network.

SlideShare

I use this application to bring in presentations that I've uploaded to Slide-

Share. It gives me a chance to show my expertise visually. Also, you can embed

video or audio into your SlideShare presentation that will automatically

play when someone visits your LinkedIn Profile. This can certainly be an effective

way to make your profile stickier. Most likely, if the visitor hears your voice

they will scroll down to this part of your profile.

Reading List by Amazon

We are what we read. Don’t miss this opportunity to create a window into

your passions and interests by showcasing and reviewing your latest reads.

Alternatively, when you are searching through profiles on LinkedIn for potential

The LinkedIn Polls application allows you to essentially conduct your own research,

of professionals, which is a paid resource. I have found Polls to be an effective

tool for understanding my audience. You must make sure that your poll is

simple to understand and that your questions are compelling. Otherwise, you

may not get much response.

Running Multiple Sites with WordPress

Exploring the Merge from Multiuser to Network

Running multiple sites under one installation of WordPress was not always
possible. From August 2005 until July 2010, there was a completely separate
software package called WordPress MU. In July 2010, the codebase
of WordPress MU and WordPress merged, meaning that the features of WordPress MU were included in the WordPress software, rendering the
WordPress MU software package obsolete. The merger of codebases
brought several advantages, including
✦ One codebase: Having the multisite feature available in one piece of
software completely eliminates user confusion on which version of
WordPress they need to use. Now, you use the same software package
regardless of whether you want to use the multisite feature. If you do,
just a few minutes of configuration can make it happen.
✦ Bug fixes: WordPress MU was not as popular as the original WordPress
software; therefore, the MU project didn’t attract as many developers
to contribute code, fixes, and additional feature development. When the
merge occurred in July 2010, the multisite feature gained the massive
WordPress developer community, making bug fixes and new features a
quicker and easier process.
✦ Easier interface: If you worked with MU, you know what we mean
here. The interface and Dashboard features for the multisite feature
in WordPress is much easier to work with, mainly because it works in
tandem with the other WordPress settings and features you’re already
familiar with.
In the past, the WordPress codebase would be updated and those
changes would be rolled over to WordPress MU with any additional fixes.
Occasionally, WordPress MU users had to wait two to four weeks or longer
for updates. Because the number of users familiar with WordPress MU was
far less than WordPress, feedback for bugs was also slow. Even though more
than 95 percent of the two codebases were identical, the remaining code in
WordPress MU did the bulk of the work maintaining multiple blogs.
Understanding the Difference between Sites and Blogs
With the merger of WordPress MU and WordPress came a name change.
Each additional blog under WordPress MU is now a site. But, what’s the difference?
Largely, it’s one of perception. Everything functions the same, but people
can see greater possibilities when they no longer think of each site as “just”
a blog. Now, WordPress can be so much more:
✦ With the addition of the Domain Mapping plugin (see Chapter 6 in this
minibook), you can manage multiple sites with different, and unique,
domain names. None of them has to be a blog. They can have a blog element,
or just use pages and have a static site.The built-in options let you choose between subdomains or subfolder
sites when you install the network. If you install WordPress in the root
of your Web space, you will get subdomain.yourdomain.com (if you
choose subdomains) or yourdomain.com/subfolder (if you choose
subfolders). Chapter 2 of this minibook discusses the differences and
advantages.
After you choose the kind of sites you want to host and create those
sites, you can’t change them later on. These sites are served virtually,
meaning that they do not exist as files or folders anywhere on the
server. They only exist in the database. The correct location is served to
the browser by using rewrite rules in the .htaccess file.
✦ The main, or parent, site of the network can also be a landing page of the
entire network of sites, showcasing content from other sites in the network
and drawing in visitors further.

Discovering When You Should
Use the Network Feature

Determining whether to use the multisite feature depends on user access
and posting. Each site in the network, although sharing the same codebase
and users, is still a self-contained unit. Users still have to access the back
end of each site to manage options or post to that site. A limited amount of
general options is network-wide, and posting is not one of them.
You can use multiple sites in a network to give the appearance that only one
site exists. Put the same theme on each site, and the visitor doesn’t realize
that they are separate. This is a good way to separate sections of a magazine
site, using editors for complete sections (sites) but not letting them access
other parts of the network or the back end of other sites.
Usually, for multiple users to post to one site, WordPress is sufficient.
The multiuser part of the WordPress MU name did not refer to how many
users, really. MU was always a bit of a misnomer and an inaccurate depiction
of what the software actually did. A network of sites is a much closer
description.
Another factor to consider is how comfortable you are with editing files
directly on the server. Setting up the network involves access to the server
directly, and ongoing maintenance and support for your users can often lead
to the network owner doing the necessary maintenance, which is not for thefaint of heart. Generally, you should use a network of sites in the following
cases:
✦ You want multiple sites and oneinstallation. You’re a blogger or site
owner whowants to maintain another site, possibly with a subdomain or
a separate domain, all on one Web host. You’re comfortable with some
edits to files, you want to work with one codebase to make site maintenance
easier, and most of your plugins and themes are accessible to all
the sites. You can have one login across the sites and manage each site
individually.
✦ You want to host blogs or sites for others. This is a little more involved.
You want to set up a network where users can sign up for their own sites
or blogs underneath (or part of) your main site and you maintain the
technical aspects for them.
Because all files are shared, some aspects have been locked down for security
purposes. One of the most puzzling for new users is the suppression
of errors. Most PHP errors (say you installed a faulty plugin or incorrectly
edited a file) do not output messages to the screen. Instead, what appears is
what we like to call the White Screen of Death.
Knowing how to find and use error logs and do general debugging are skills
needed when you are managing your own network. Even if your Web host
will set up the ongoing daily or weekly tasks for you, managing a network
can be a steep learning curve.
When you enable the network, the existing WordPress site becomes the
main site in the installation.
Although WordPress can be quite powerful, in the following situations the
management of multiple sites has its limitations:
✦ One Web account is used for the installation. You cannot use multiple
hosting accounts.
✦ You want to post to multiple blogs at one time. WordPress will not do
this by default.
✦ If you choose subdirectory sites, the main site will regenerate permalinks
with /blog/ in it to prevent collisions with subsites. There are
existing plugins available to strip this.
WordPress MU had quirks in the software. The www was stripped from the
domain name, for example, and you couldn’t install on just an IP address
or by using only localhost as the name. These issues are addressed in
WordPress 3.0.Setting Up the Optimal Hosting Environment
This chapter assumes that you already have the WordPress software
installed and running correctly on your Web server, and that your Web
server meets the minimum requirements to run WordPress.
Before you enable the WordPress multisite feature, you need to determine
how you are going to use the feature. You have a couple of options:
. Manage just a few of your own WordPress blogs or Web sites.
. Run a full-blown blogging network with several hundred different blogs
and multiple users.
If you are planning to run just a few of your own sites with the WordPress
multisite feature, then your current hosting situation is probably well suited.
However, if your plans are to host a large network with hundreds of blogs
and multiple users, you should consider contacting your host and increasing
your bandwidth, as well as the disk space limitations on your account.
The best example of a large blog network with hundreds of blogs and
users (actually, more like millions) is the hosted service at WordPress.
com (http://wordpress.com). At WordPress.com, people are invited to
sign up for an account and start a blog using the network feature within the
WordPress platform on the WordPress server. When you enable this feature
on your own domain and enable the user registration feature, you are inviting
users to
. Create an account.
. Create a blog on your WordPress installation (on your domain).
. Create content by publishing blog posts.
. Upload media files such as photos, audio, and video.
. Invite friends to view their blog, or to sign up for their own account.
In addition to the necessary security measures, time, and administrative
tasks that go into running a community of blogs, you have a few more things
to worry about. Creating a community will increase the resource use, bandwidth,
and disk space on your Web server. In many cases, if you go over the
allotted limits given to you by your Web host, you will incur great cost. Make
sure that you anticipate your bandwidth and disk space needs before running
a large network on your Web site! (Don¡¯t say we didn¡¯t warn you.)Checking out shared versus dedicated hosting
Many WordPress Network communities start with grand dreams of being
a large and active community. Be realistic on how your community will
operate in order to make the right hosting choice for yourself and your
community.
Small blogging communities can be easily handled using a shared-server
solution, whereas larger, more active communities should really consider a
dedicated-server solution for operation. The difference between the two lies
in their names:
. Shared-server solution: You have one account on one server that has
several other accounts on it. Think of this as apartment living. One
apartment building has several apartments for multiple people to live,
all under one roof.
. Dedicated-server solution: You have one account. You have one server.
That server is dedicated to your account, and your account is dedicated
to the server. Think of this as owning a home where you don¡¯t share
your living space with anyone else.
A dedicated-server solution is a more expensive investment for your blog
community, while a shared-server solution is the most economical. Your
decision on which solution to go with for your WordPress Network blogging
community will be based on your realistic estimates of how big and how
active your community will be. You can move from a shared-server solution
to a dedicated-server solution if your community gets larger than you
expected; however, starting with the right solution for your community from
day one is easier.
Exploring subdomains versus subdirectories
The WordPress network feature gives you two different ways to run a network
of blogs on your domain. You can use the subdomain option or the
subdirectory option. The most popular option (and recommended structure)
sets up subdomains for the blogs created by your WordPress Network.
With the subdomain option, the username of the blog appears first, followed
by your domain name. With the subdirectory option, your domain name
appears first, followed by the username of the blog. Which one should you
choose? The choice is yours. You can see the difference in the URLs of these
two options by comparing the following examples:
. A subdomain looks like this: http://username.yourdomain.com
. A subdirectory looks like this: http://yourdomain.com/username

today! That’s impressive. And with WordPress, you can truly tailor a blog to
your own tastes and needs.
With no cost for using the benefits of the WordPress platform to publish
content on the Web, WordPress is as priceless as it is free. WordPress
makes writing, editing, and publishing content on the Internet a delightful,
fun, and relatively painless experience whether you’re a publisher, designer,
developer — or just blogging as a hobby.

Introducing the World of Blogging

Blogging is an evolutionary process, and blogs have evolved beyond personal
journals to become tools for real journalism, business, and authorship.
A blog is a fabulous tool for publishing your diary of thoughts and ideas;
however, blogs also serve as excellent tools for business, editorial journalism,
news, and entertainment. Here are some ways that people use blogs:
. Personal: A blogger can use a blog as a journal or diary. You¡¯re considered
a personal blogger if you use your blog mainly to discuss topics
related to you or your life . your family, your cats, your children, or
your interests (for example, technology, politics, sports, art, or photography).
Lisa¡¯s blog, which you find at http://lisasabin-wilson.
com, is an example of a personal blog.
. Business: A blogger can use a blog to promote her company¡¯s business
services or products. Blogs are very effective tools for promotion and
marketing, and business blogs usually offer helpful information to readers
and consumers, such as sales events and product reviews. Business
blogs also let readers provide feedback and ideas, which can help a
company improve its services. A good example of a business blog is
ServerBeach, which you can find on the hosted WordPress.com service
at http://serverbeach.wordpress.com.
. Media/journalism: Popular news outlets, such as Fox News, MSNBC, and
CNN, are using blogs on their Web sites to provide information on current
events, politics, and news on a regional, national, and international
level. These news organizations often have editorial bloggers, too. CNN¡¯s
Anderson Cooper, for example, maintains a blog on CNN¡¯s Web site at
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com, with news and commentary from the
Anderson Cooper 360¡Æ television show. Readers are invited to join in,
too, by leaving comments about the news stories.
. Government: Number 10 (www.number10.gov.uk) is the official site of
the British Prime Minister from his headquarters at 10 Downing Street
in London. (See Figure 1-1.) The Prime Minister and his staff provide
content by way of blog posts, photos, and videos, and integrate feeds from
their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Governments use blogs to post news
and updates to the web quickly, as well as integrate social-media tools as a
means and way to interact with their citizens and representatives.
. Citizen journalism: Blogging has provided people opportunities to
report and analyze news and information on a national and international
level. Citizens are using blogs with the intention of keeping the media
and politicians in check by fact-checking news stories and exposing
inconsistencies. Major cable news programs interview many of these
bloggers because the mainstream media recognize the importance of the
citizen voice that¡¯s emerging via blogs. An example of citizen journalism
is Power Line at http://powerlineblog.com.

Professional: Professional bloggers, a category that’s growing every
day, can blog for companies or Web sites. Blog networks, such
as WeblogsInc.com, hire bloggers to write about certain topics.
Additionally, several services match advertisers with bloggers, and the
advertisers pay the bloggers to post about their products. Check out
Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger blog at http://problogger.net. Darren
is considered the grandfather of all professional bloggers.

Using WordPress as a Content Management System
You hear it a lot if you browse different Web sites that publish posts about
WordPress: ¡°WordPress is more than a blogging platform; it¡¯s a full content
management system.¡± What does that mean?
A content management system (CMS) is a platform that lets you run a full
Web site on your domain. This means that WordPress, in addition to a blog,
allows you to create pages and build additional features into your Web site
that have nothing to do with the content on your blog.
A Web site and a blog are two different things. Although a Web site can contain
a blog, a blog cannot contain a full Web site. We know it sounds confusing,
but after you read this section and explore the differences between the
two, you¡¯ll have a better understanding.
A blog is a chronological display of content . most often, written by the
blog author. The posts are published and, usually, categorized into topics
and archived by date. Blog posts can have comments activated so readers
can leave their feedback and the author can respond, creating a dialogue
about the blog post.
A Web site is a collection of published pages and different sections that offer
the visitor a different experience. A Web site can incorporate a blog but usually
contains other sections and features. These other features include
. Photo galleries: Albums of photos uploaded and collected in a specific
area so that visitors can browse through and comment on them.
. E-commerce stores: Fully integrated shopping area into which you can
upload products for sale and from which your visitors can purchase
them.
. Discussion forums: Where visitors can join, create discussion threads,
and respond to one another in specific threads of conversation.

While you are hanging out on the Internet (in your underwear, maybe?) on a Saturday, kids that are smart than either you or I are out there getting ready to change the world. 18-year-old Eesha Khare (left), for instance, not only invented a supercapacitor that could someday be a phone battery that charges in a handful of seconds; she also one $50,000 for it.

Khare is one of the three big winners from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. She and 17-year-old Henry Lin (right)-who created a model that simulates thousands of galaxies-picked up Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ionut Budisteanu won the Gordon E. Moore Award and $75,000 for his AI model that could lead to a cheaper self-driving car. Khare's invention is the one with some really immediate potential though, and quick-charging phones is something we all want.

So far, the supercapcitor has only been tested to light up a LED, but it was able to do that wonderfully. It's also flexible and tiny, and should be able to handle 10,000 recharge cycles, more than normal batteries by a factor of 10.

It's a great step in the right direction, especially since we all know that battery life is the most important feature a phone can have. But like all supercapcitor tech, it's not exactly close to commercial development yet. But hey, if a (admittedly super smart) 18-year-old can get this stuff figured out, multi-national corporations with an even bigger cash profit insentive on the table should be able to as well, right? Hurry up already. I'll take either solution so long as one comes soon.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM CO_OP AND INTERNSHIP CANDIDATES

What is the purpose of TMMNA's co-op program?

- The co-op program is intended to be a gateway to long term employment, while providing training and work experience in a manufacturing* environment to college youth. TMMNA is strongly committed to employing U.S. citizens and permanent residents; we do not accept students to work at TMMNA on a temporary Visa.

What is a Toyota Co-op? Intern?

- Co-op: College students hired to work for a specific period of time for paid career related work experiences which alternate between school and work and which vary. Work assignments may last for a minimum of three semesters or six quarters.
- Interns: Positions that allow students to work full-time with no commitment by either party to return again.

How are students selected?

- Students are selected with academic backgrounds, interests, possible career goals which with the job assignment.

Is there a certain G.P.A. that a student must have?

- Students should maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 or better overall which is confirmed each quarter / semester with grades. (Students with lower G.P.A.'s may be considered for assignments on an exception basis.)

How are we paid?

- Co-ops / Interns hourly pay is determined by two criteria: the number of Accumulated Credit Hours plus the number of Accumulated Work Hours at any Toyota facility.

Are we paid overtime?

- Overtime will be paid at the rate of one and one-half times the hourly rate after 40 hours each week including Saturdays. Overtime on TMMNA designated holidays only will be paid at double the hourly rate. All overtime must be pre-approved.

Do we get vacation or sick days?

- There are no vacation or sick days. Any time off other than those designated TMMNA Holidays, is taken without pay and must be approved in advance by the Department supervisor and the College Relations Specialist.
- In order to receive holiday pay, co-op / intern must work the day before and the day after the holiday; unless otherwise agreed upon in advance by the department supervisor and the College Relations Specialist.

Does Toyota provide cars for students to use during the co-op/internship?

- Students must have their own transportation, regardless of where they live. TMMNA does not provide students with automobiles for their personal use.
- At TMMNA, co-op / intern students on authorized business will be reimbursed for reasonable and lawful expenses.

Does Toyota provide relocation assistance?

- Students whose permanent residence is outside a 50-mile radius of their TMMNA work assignment are eligible for relocation assistance.
- Students whose permanent residence is outside a 50-mile radius of their TMMNA work assignment will be reimbursed at the current TMMNA mileage rate for one relocation trip to the work site when the student begins work and for one return trip after their last day of work. No additional expenses will be reimbursed without prior approval from TMMNA Human Resources Department
- Students coming more than a 260-mile radius from the TMMNA site will either be reimbursed mileage as stated above , as well as lodging, meals, etc., or they will be provided air transportation for the two one-way trips, at TMMNA's option. No additional expenses will be reimbursed without prior approval from TMMNA Human Resources Department.

Does Toyota provide housing?

- Currently, Toyota does not provide housing for students; however, TMMNA will provide housing information.
