I really wasn’t that surprised since how he played at the end of the season showed that his playing days in the NFL were over. While Favre probably won’t ever admit this, I bet he regrets coming back this past season. While I have been upset with Favre for quite a while now (due to what he did this offseason), I congratulate him on a great career if this is truly his retirement.

Since I really expected this to eventually happen when the Packers switched to a 3-4, I can’t say I am surprised by the move.

At this point, I am pretty optimistic about the move. While Kampman is pretty big for an OLB, I think he should still do a pretty good job in the role. There have been plenty of DEs that have switched to a OLB. Kevin Greene (our OLB coach) was in the same situation as Kampman and he thrived due to the switch.

To be honest with you I had never heard of Darren Perry before today. I am guessing few of you had heard of him either. Perry played 8 seasons in the NFL (six with the Steelers, and 1 with the Saints and Chargers). His coaching experience includes time with the Bengals (2002), Steelers (2003-2006), and finally the Raiders (2007-2008).

Overall I think the hire is pretty good even though I have no real knowledge of Perry as a coach. I am encouraged that he was a coach for the Steelers but I am skeptical of him being a coach for the Bengals and Raiders (both don’t have great defenses). Perry also has first hand knowledge of both Dom Capers and Kevin Greene since just like Greene, he played under Capers when Capers was the defensive coordinator of the Steelers.

Now the Packers only have a couple more openings left on the coaching staff. First they need a strength and conditioning coach. They also need a cornerbacks coach. The rumor going around is that Joe Whitt Jr (the current defensive quality control coach) will be promoted to the cornerbacks coach. After hiring Perry I doubt there is much chance of still getting Herm Edwards since I think he would like to coach the entire secondary, not just the corners. Other than those two positions, the staff seems to be complete unless we sign a defensive line assistant.

So what do you think of Darren Perry as the newest coach to join the Packers staff? Are you as excited about the Packers defensive coaching staff as I am?

It what can only be described as pretty surprising news, the Packers hired former NFL great Kevin Greene to coach the outside linebackers this season. This hire comes as a surprise since I didn’t even know we were interested in him. While I am surprised I have to say I am pleasantly surprised.

While Kevin Greene doesn’t have a lot of coaching experience (actually just a couple coaching internships), I really like the hire. Kevin Greene will bring NFL experience to the coaching staff. He can coach what he knows since he was one of the best linebackers in the league for many seasons. He was also a pretty nasty player so maybe he can put some energy and some toughness back into our defense. At times our players seemed afraid to actually hit someone.

At this point there is only rumors swirling about the possibility of Herm Edwards coming to Green Bay. There are no confirmed reports of him having an interview with the Packers but there are definently rumors around the internet that state that Herm Edwards is coming in for an interview.

While it appears pretty unlikely, I actually think there is a chance that Herm Edwards does become the Packers secondary coach. According to Fox Sports, Herm Edwards is contemplating between taking some time off, getting a college coaching job, or finding a job as a secondary coach in the NFL. Obviously option one and two take him out of consideration for the secondary job but option three does give the Packers a pretty good shot at getting him. If he wants to be a successful secondary coach can he really ask for anything else. This past season the Packers had three pro bowlers in the secondary (Woodson, Collins, and Harris). Tramon Williams is also an up and comer and Atari Bigby could be something if he can actually stay healthy this season. I don’t think a secondary coach could find a better situation.

McCarthy confirmed in his press conference that the Packers will be switching to a 3-4. He also mentioned though that there will be some 4-3 sets but that the 3-4 will be the base defense. I have to say that I’m cautiously optimistic about the switch. The 3-4 has been very successful recently. I am worried that quite a few of our current players won’t fit the scheme. This worries me since if it is true, we’re going to have a rebuilding year or two. We will also likely have to get rid of Kampman who is one of our best players. I am just getting the feeling that this will either be a great decision or a total disaster. Hopefully it’s the former.

For those of you uncomfortable with switching to a 3-4, McCarthy gave us some news that might be a little reassuring. First of all McCarthy thinks Kampman will love the new 3-4 so it seems like McCarthy and Capers have some idea of how to utilize him. It’s kind of odd though that McCarthy really never addressed what Kampman’s role in the new defense. I am assuming that it will be a defensive end/linebacker but it would have been good if he clarified it. Second McCarthy seems to think that most of our current players will be able to fit into the new scheme. Hopefully McCarthy isn’t just sugarcoating things or we will be undergoing a painful rebuilding process. I guess we will just have to take a wait and see approach. One thing I know for sure though is that things will definently be changing for the Packers defense this offseason.
