Broadband pledge paves way for increased business VoIP potential in Scotland

The Scottish government has outlined plans for high speed broadband investment which could see significant benefits, including increased potential for business VoIP (voice over internet protocol), by 2015.

The specially titled ‘Infrastructure Action Plan’ has at its ultimate aim the establishment of ‘world-class digital access’ for the whole of Scotland by 2020. However, the plan also involves a ‘step change’ for the country by 2015, whereby the availability of speeds of between 40 and 80 Mbps is intended for up to 90% of all premises; together with a general improvement in overall speeds for remaining premises.

A new survey has questioned the financial wisdom of relying on mobile phone use for the purposes of making international work-related calls whilst travelling.

The survey, by telecommunications data and services supplier, CCMI, and entitled ‘Trends and Best Practices to Control International Roaming Costs’, identified a significant degree of disquiet regarding the costs of international mobile phone use among representatives from leading companies in the US.

Major UK software solutions provider opts for new business VoIP facility

Distribution software specialist, EDP, has implemented a new business VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system to improve communications between its offices across the UK.

EDP’s head of IT, Chris Spicer, said that the new system was needed because the quality of communications made via the organisation’s previous business phone systems was ‘awful’.

IP telephony popular among Western European utility companies

IP telephony is one of the top two most common technological enhancements adopted by utility companies across Western Europe, a new survey has revealed.

The survey, by specialist energy marketing research organisation, IDC Energy Insights, reveals that along with cloud computing, IP (internet protocol) telephony is currently being taken up by over 50% of Western European utilities.

A survey by Virgin Media has revealed that one of the top priorities identified by businesses in 2012 is to increase their access to superfast broadband.

According to Virgin Media, 31% of businesses canvassed in its annual survey revealed that achieving a connection to high speed broadband was their major investment priority.
