It is no surprise this wonderful restaurant in Colonia Emiliano Zapata won the “Best Outdoor” and “Best Service” VirtualVallarta.com Readers’ Choice Awards in 2011. It’s an awesome experience, and one of my favorites.

I was thrilled to capture this image during the opening of an exhibition by Mexican artist Abelardo Favela. I was very much looking forward to meeting him in person. Unfortunately, a last-minute personal emergency prevented him from being present at his event. I hope he can visit Puerto Vallarta soon!

Mikey’s is an amazing deli within Los Mercados, where not only can you find great meat cuts and tasty take-out options. They also offer a great variety of bread loaves that are made and baked on the premises.

I was just invited to capture three 360s at Los Mercados, a beautiful shop complex in Emiliano Zapata, my neighborhood, here in Puerto Vallarta. Capturing the intimate courtyard was challenging, as I wanted to ensure that people viewing the image would connect with the upstairs spaces as well as those at street level. To make this happen, I propped my tripod over one of the small, round tables you can see around the water fountain, and used a small ladder to rotate my camera as I did the individual shots. Spreading water all over the stone floor surrounding the fountain helped highlight its rustic character. And all technical things aside, this is one excellent place to shop for deli products, fine wines, organic produce and much more.

Me acaban de invitar a capturar tres 360s en Los Mercados, un bello mini-centro comercial en mi colonia, Emiliano Zapata, aquí en Puerto Vallarta. Capturar la intimidad del patio central fue un reto interesante, ya que quería que la gente pudiera conectar con los espacios en la planta alta, tanto como los de la planta baja. Para lograrlo, coloqué mi tripié sobre una de las pequeñas mesas redondas alrededor de la fuente, y utilizé una pequeña escalera plegable para poder rotar la camara al hacer las tomas individuales. Esparcimos agua sobre el piso de piedra alrededor de la fuente para realzar su textura. E independientemente de todos los detalles técnicos, éste es un excelente lugar para comprar carners frías, vinos y licores finos, productos orgánicos y mucho más.

King of the Hill

The view from the roof terrace right after sunset at the Old Mazatlán Inn, in the heart of Mazatlan’s Centro Histórico, is spectacular. I was fortunate enough to stay there this past weekend, thanks to the generosity of owner O’Neil McGean, who invited me and some friend to enjoy a weekend in town, during this year’s gay pride parade. Everything I could have wished for (views, shopping, walking, culture, dining, exploring a traditional Mexican neighborhood) was within walking distance! Also, check out their swimming pool.

La vista desde la terraza superior del Old Mazatlán Inn, en el corazón del Centro Histórico de Mazatlán, justo después de la puesta del sol, es verdaderamente espectacular. Tuve la fortuna de hospedarme ahí el fin de semana pasado, gracias a una generosa cortesía que nos ofreció su propietario, O’Neil McGean, invitándonos a disfrutar de su comodísimo hotel durante el fin de semana de la marcha gay de este año. ¡Todo lo que pude haber deseado (desde vistas, compras, caminar, cultura, gastronomía, explorar una colonia típica mexicana) estaba a sólo unos pasos de distancia! Tambien visita su piscina.
