GRANT HIGH SCHOOL TUTORING & MENTORING

Beginning in 2007, PACT established a "O-period" tutoring class at Grant High School that meets everyday from 7-8 AM before the regular school day. The students of the "O-period" class are English as a Second Language learners, ranging in grade level (9th-12th) and age (14-18 years). PACT tutors work with these students in various subjects, including Geometry, Algebra, Physics, and English. We also hold focused review sessions to target the needs of our students as well as provide one-on-one tutoring to address individual needs. For a select group of students, we provide SAT I and II workshops to help the students prepare to take the college admission exams.

PACT tutors also focus on building mentor/mentee relationships with our high school students during tutoring sessions, workshops, weekend field trips, and special events. PACT tutors work with our high school students to understand their personal interests, help them create their post-high school plans, and continually demonstrate and remind them of the value of earning a high school diploma. The PACT community creates an environment in which our high school students can seek help and share their personal experiences in effort to succeed during the ever so important high school years.

In addition to tutoring the "O-period" students during the school year, PACT continues to work with students taking rigorous courses such as Chemistry and Physics during the summer. PACT tutors provide one-on-one tutoring during the school day to those students struggling to keep up during the intense summer school schedule. Moreover, PACT tutors provide after-school review sessions for those seeking additional help.

FIELD TRIPS FOR GRANT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

PACT hosts the students of the "O-period" class each year at UCLA for a campus and lab tour. During the annual field trip to UCLA, our students tour the campus, speak to other UCLA students and professors, sit on lectures and discussions, and visit the dorms in order to get a glimpse of life on a university campus. Not only does this inspire many of our students to earn their high school diplomas and pursue higher education, but it sparks additional interests and encourages them to pursue a variety of options post-secondary education.

In addition to the annual UCLA field trip, PACT organizes a special field trip for the students of the "O-period" class. Most recently, we hosted our high school students at the California Science Center for a day of activities and workshops. The students enjoyed a tour of the interactive museum, watched multiple IMAX movies, climbed the rock walls, rode the high-wire bicycles, and experienced the real-world application of the science material they learn in the classroom.

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS AT GRANT HIGH SCHOOL & KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL

Every year PACT hosts UCLA student groups, Project Brainstorm and Interaxon, on the Grant High School campus to present to the students of the AP Psychology, Biology, and "O-period" classes. The presentations consist of wet lab demonstrations of real human and animal brains as well as interactive workshops about Neuroscience and science in general. The students find themselves engaged in conversations about science with PACT tutors and their peers as they have never participated in such hands-on demonstrations and are truly interested in the material.

In addition, PACT visits John F. Kennedy High School to speak to the graduating seniors about attending college, the transition between high school and university life, and the accompanying personal experiences. We also speak to juniors and sophomores to share our personal experiences with applying to college. We focus on encouraging those students hesitant to apply to four-year universities because of financial constraints by sharing our own financial aid allotments and highlighting federal financial aid programs such as Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarships available on various websites.
