On 13 December 2024,

Ismailis around the world will celebrate Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 88th birthday — an occasion to reflect on the unique spiritual bond that links each murid to the Imam-of-the-Time.

Throughout history, Ismaili Muslims have been led by a living, hereditary Imam-of-the-Time descended from the progeny of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) through his cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali, and his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima.

On 13 December 2024, the global Jamat will celebrate the 88th birthday of our present living Imam, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan. Born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1936, he succeeded his grandfather to become the 49th Imam at the age of 20.

During over six decades of his Imamat, Mawlana Hazar Imam has devoted himself to the spiritual and worldly progress of Ismailis everywhere. Throughout this time, he has also been recognised as an influential and respected leader on the world stage, by virtue of his commitment to peace, hope, and upholding the dignity of humankind.

The celebration of Hazar Imam's birthday is an occasion for Ismailis to reflect on the unique spiritual bond that links each murid to Hazar Imam. It also affords the Jamat an opportunity to express its love, loyalty, and devotion to the Imamat, which binds the Ismaili community together as one.

Navratri - Hindu Festival

Navratri, in Hinduism, major festival held in honour of the divine feminine. Navratri occurs over 9 days during the month of Ashvin, or Ashvina (in the Gregorian calendar, usually September–October). It often ends with the Dussehra (also called Vijayadashami) celebration on the 10th day. In some parts of India, Dussehra is considered a focal point of the festival, making it effectively span 10 days instead of 9. Additionally, as Navratri depends on the lunar calendar, in some years it may be celebrated for 8 days, with Dussehra on the 9th. There are four similar festivals, also called Navratri, which are held at various stages of the year. However, the early autumn festival, also called Sharad Navratri, is the most significant. It begins on the same day as Durga Puja, a 10-day festival devoted to the victory of the goddess Durga, which is particularly celebrated in certain eastern states.

Navratri is celebrated differently in India’s various regions. For many people it is a time of religious reflection and fasting, while for others it is a time for dancing and feasting. Among fasting customs are observing a strict vegetarian diet and abstaining from alcohol and certain spices. Dances performed include garba, especially in Gujarat. Typically, the festival’s nine nights are dedicated to different aspects of the divine feminine principle, or shakti. While the pattern varies somewhat by region, generally the first third of the festival focuses on aspects of the goddess Durga, the second third on the goddess Lakshmi, and the final third on the goddess Sarasvati. Offerings are often made to the goddesses and their various aspects, and rituals are performed in their honour. One popular ritual is Kanya Puja, which takes place on the eighth or ninth day. In this ritual nine young girls are dressed as the nine goddess aspects celebrated during Navratri and are worshipped with ritual foot washing and given offerings such as food and clothing.

Among some followers of the goddess Durga, who are particularly predominant in Bengal and Assam, the festival is known as or coincides with the Durga Puja (“Rite of Durga”). Special images of Durga commemorating her victory over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura are worshipped daily, and on the 10th day (Dussehra) they are taken in jubilant processions to nearby rivers or reservoirs for immersion in water. In addition to family observances, the puja, or ritual, days are also celebrated with public concerts, recitations, plays, and fairs.

In some regions, Dussehra is collected into Navratri, and the entire 10-day celebration is known by that name. Whether throughout the festival or as the 10th day, Dussehra is a time to celebrate the triumphs of good over evil, such as Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. In some parts of India, Dussehra is associated with the victory of the god Rama over the demon-king Ravana. In northern India the Ram Lila (“Play of Rama”) is the highlight of the festival. On successive nights different episodes of the epic poem the Ramayana are dramatized by young actors elaborately costumed and masked; the pageant is always climaxed by the burning of huge effigies of the demons. Athletic tournaments and hunting expeditions are often organized. Some celebrate by erecting bonfires and burning effigies of Ravana, which are sometimes stuffed with fireworks. In many regions Dussehra is considered an auspicious time to begin educational or artistic pursuits, especially for children.

People asked what is the name ?? When she told the name, everyone was shocked, "She is lying".

But she said, "No he has come".

People took her in front of Lal Bahadur Shastriji and asked, "Is this is your son?

So the mother said "yes he is my son."

People showed the minister, "Is she your mother?"

Then Shastri ji called his mother and sat with her and after some time sent her home.

So the reporters asked "Why didn't you give a speech in front of her".

So he said -

My mother does not know that I am a minister. If she comes to know, she will start recommending people and I will not be able to refuse… and she will also have arrogance.

Everyone was shocked to hear the answer."

Eid al-Fitr is an Arabic term which means the ‘festival of breaking (the fast).’ The festival marks the culmination of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims turn inwards through fasting and spiritual devotion; and outwards through acts of kindness and compassion.

Historically, Muslims have celebrated Eid al-Fitr since the time of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him and his family), emphasising our values of spiritual upliftment and generosity towards those facing difficulty and hardship. It is an occasion of peace, happiness, joy, and festivity.

During Fatimid times, Ismaili Imam-Caliphs used to address believers on the day of Eid in a Khutba (sermon). In an Eid address in the 10th century CE, Mawlana al-Qaim told a gathered assembly of believers that this day of Eid is a festival that Allah honours and exalts. He counsels Muslims on this day to “be faithful in your intentions and submit your requests to God.”

Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr begins at sunset on the night of the first sighting of the crescent moon, marking the beginning of the month of Shawwal. In some countries in the Middle East and Asia, the festival is a public holiday, and is celebrated for one to three days

Laylat al-Qadr - The Night of Power

Laylat al-Qadr, or the Night of Power, commemorates one of the most significant events in the history of Islam. It is the night when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) received the first revelation from Allah.

According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad used to retreat to Jabal an-Nur, a mountain outside of Mecca, for a month or so every year. There, he would meditate in isolation in the cave of Hira. During one such retreat the Prophet had a profound spiritual experience when the Angel Gabriel inspired him to:

“Recite in the Name of thy Lord Who created, created man of a blood clot. Recite! Thy Lord is most noble, Who taught by the Pen, taught man that which he knew not.” (Surah al Alaq, ayat 1-5)

Laylat al-Qadr commemorates the night during which these first verses of the Holy Qur’an were revealed.

Ismaili Muslims worldwide observe Navroz (Nowruz), a festival that marks the beginning of a new year and the first day of spring. Navroz signifies a time of spiritual renewal and physical rejuvenation, as well as a spirit of gratitude for blessings and an outlook of hope and optimism.

Navroz commemorates a centuries-old, agrarian custom that over time was integrated into various cultures and faith traditions. Its origins are traced to ancient Persia, being the first day of the Persian solar year.

The celebration of Navroz has extended through various parts of the Muslim world and beyond, over the centuries. Today, Navroz is celebrated by some 300 million people in Iran, Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and many other countries. In each of these different regions of the world, Navroz is observed in diverse ways. The commemorations blend together local cultures and customs with the religious beliefs and interpretations found in different regions of the world.

In Iran, Navroz is a national holiday for two weeks, and starts with a spring cleaning of the house. The moment that the sun crosses the celestial equator is calculated to the exact minute and second. At this moment, called Saal Tahvil, literally meaning “turning point of the year,” families gather together around the Haft Seen table to wish one another Navroz Mubarak, exchange gifts, and offer prayers.

In Surah Ya-Sin of the Holy Qur’an, Allah says:

There is a sign for them in the lifeless earth: We give it life and We produce grain from it for them to eat. We have put gardens of date palms and grapes in the earth, and We have made springs of water gush out of it so that they could eat its fruit. It was not their own hands that made all this. How can they not give thanks?

— Surah 36, Verses 33–35

Ismailis across the globe celebrate Navroz with the recital of devotional poetry in the form of ginans, qasidas, and manqabas. Dried fruits, nuts, and grains are distributed among Jamati members, symbolising blessings of abundance and sustenance. Navroz is also a time of family gatherings and celebratory meals, thus strengthening family bonds and fraternal ties.

Ismaili jamatkhanas are private tariqa spaces. Tariqa is an Arabic word meaning “path” and refers to a path to spiritual enlightenment and union with God. Tariqas are communities of Muslims that follow a path guided by a spiritual leader, such as a Shia Imam or a Sufi murshid. They guide their community’s interpretation and practice of the Islamic faith as part of an inward search for spiritual enlightenment.

As direct hereditary descendants of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny), Imams in the Shia interpretation of Islam are responsible for interpreting the faith and improving the quality of life of the community and the societies in which they live. The Imam-of-the-Time has the sole authority to determine Ismaili tariqa practices in jamatkhana at any time.

Ismaili tariqa practices include a variety of prayers recommended in the Holy Qur’an. These include du‘a (prayer for supplication), tasbih (glorification), dhikr (remembrance), and salawat (seeking blessings on the Prophet and his progeny). Practices also include the recitation of verses of the Holy Qur’an, affirming the shahada (the Islamic declaration of faith), reciting devotional poetry such as qasidas, nashids and ginans, and the reading of farmans, which is guidance from the Imam. Special prayers may be observed on religious festivals, to seek help during times of difficulty, and during rites of passage, particularly deaths. These practices reaffirm Ismaili beliefs in the oneness of God, in His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad, and a belief and commitment to those in authority (uli’l-amr), the hereditary Imams. The pledge of allegiance (bay‘a) to the Imam-of-the-Time is reaffirmed daily in various prayers and jamatkhana practices.

Seeking intercession and forgiveness from the Prophets and Imams

Many Ismaili prayers and practices seek the intercession of the Prophets and the Imams, particularly the Imam-of-the-Time. Intercession means to plead or intervene on behalf of another. Believers ask those who are considered close to God to intercede with the Lord on their behalf. Many religious communities around the world, including both Sunni and Shia Muslims, believe in the concept of intercession. Practices seeking intercession and forgiveness through Prophet Muhammad are rooted in various verses of the Qur’an, such as the following verse: And if, when they had wronged themselves, they had but come to you [Prophet] and asked forgiveness of Allah, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Forgiving, Merciful. (Q 4:64)The Shia extend the Prophet’s role as intercessor to the Imams descended from him, through the lineage of Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him), the Prophet’s cousin and the first Shia Imam, and his wife, Hazrat Bibi Fatima (peace be upon her), the Prophet’s beloved daughter. Therefore, Ismailis invoke the names of Allah, Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Ali, and the Imams in their devotional practices and prayers. This is why Ismaili practices include seeking forgiveness and spiritual purification through the Imam’s intercession.

Offerings to the Imam

In the time of Prophet Muhammad, believers would go to him to seek his blessings, prayers, forgiveness, and help. We find in the Qur’an that they were asked to give offerings to the Prophet when they went to see him:[O Prophet] Take of their wealth a freewill offering (sadaqa), to purify them and to sanctify them, and pray for them. Your prayers are a comfort for them… (Q 9:103)

Thus, it is customary for Ismailis to give freewill offerings out of love and devotion to the Imam-of-the-Time as a means of purifying themselves, and to receive blessings and prayers for forgiveness through the Imam’s intercession, just as in the time of the Prophet. Because the Imam cannot always be physically present, this is often undertaken in jamatkhanas through the Imam’s appointed representatives on his behalf. Another type of offering in jamatkhanas is voluntary service. Ismaili community institutions, including jamatkhanas, are largely run by dedicated volunteers who offer their time and knowledge out of love and devotion to the Imam and the community. Jamatkhanas are a place where Islamic values are put into practice, including humility, generosity, kindness, compassion, and service to others.

The Gir Kesar mango, also called Kesar. kesar is a mango cultivar grown in the foothills of Girnar in Gujarat, western part of India. The mango is known for its bright orange colored pulp and best in Taste.

The mango was grown in 1931 by Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai in Vanthali. About 75 grafts were then planted in the foothills of Girnar at the Junagadh Laal Dori farm. The mango is said to have been known as "Kesar" since 1934 when the Nawab of Junagadh Muhammad Mahabat Khan III said "This is Kesar" looking at the orange pulp of the fruit—kesar

The Kesar mango is grown in an approximate area of 20,000 hectare in the districts of Junagadh and Amreli in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, with an estimated annual production of two lakh tonnes.
