Link Spam means a building a bunch of links thrown around to all kinds of places that are not relevant to what Google sees when it looks at your website. This can be blog farms, some forum posts, profile links, and pligg site link spamming.

That is all you get from many SEO services out there. You know, the ones cold calling you and they won’t get off the phone. They often want an iron clad contract too. Of course its cheap, it takes less work to flip the switch on some automated software than to think through what a business and web site really need.

I find the most relevant words the buyers type then get you placed for those terms with quality content that lasts, individualized to your site and your business and your goals.

Google is getting better and better at knowing what link spam is.
Mostly they just ignore the links which means you pay for no results. Sometimes they have been known to take sites with lots of link spam right out of all search results.

Syndicating Content for Links AND Traffic

We all need links but why not build links that will get traffic directly from where they are placed? A couple good ways and places to make that happen are document sites, podcast sites and video sites. Since a lot of people will search for content while at these sites and because many of them have a socialization structure in place traffic can be gained even if all the regular search engines have you on page 200. Of course since many of these sites are going to provide some good links the 200 position will start moving up too.

Twitter and Facebook are not built around the content the way Document, Podcast, and Video sites are so your content is more likely to be lost in the heap of conversations taking place on the sites that are mainly focused on socialization. I am not saying they have no value, not at all, but this is about building links where people will find content and become interested in what I offer and visit my site.

When someone who is interested in what I offer and visits my site because of finding some content I placed that is a very targeted person. If I have done any kind of pre-selling then they are even more likely to buy, or join, or sign-up. Content that shows you as knowledgeable on your topic, or is otherwise informative and interesting will pique the interest of the reader. You can begin to draw them toward you this way but don’t forget some call to action. A simple statement, like soandso com has all the details on the new chocolate hats everybody is wearing this season, will make a big difference in getting that click.

Say for example you wrote an article and put it on ezinearticles com then made a PDF of it and put it on scribd com and docstoc com and then read the article into an audio and put that on podcast com and apple itunes then took the audio and put it with a powerpoint of the article or article outline and made that into a video. Well you would be getting links and traffic for years to come.

A few other places you can look into are free ebook directories and the possibility to be a guest blogger. You can place the same articles on “Satellite blogs” like blogger, Squidoo and LiveJournal. Most of these sites will let you use a keyword related anchor text link and you can leverage your visibility by socializing.

From reading this post “Quality Links to Your Site” at the Official Google Webmaster Blog they cite these type of links as the best.

Participation. “…get involved in the community around your topic. Interact and contribute on forums and blogs.” Which means real and quality participation in relevant forums and blog commenting.
Content. “If you offer long-lasting, unique and compelling content — something that lets your expertise shine — people will want to recommend it to others.” “This can help you gain lasting, merit-based links and loyal followers who generate direct traffic and “spread the word.”
Link bait, though they point out it is usually short lived. “We’ve seen all kinds of amusing content, from ASCII art embedded in a site’s source code to funny downtime messages used as a viral marketing technique to increase the visibility of a site.”
Relevant Directories. “There are great, topical directories that add value to the Internet. But there are not many of them in proportion to those of lower quality. If you decide to submit your site to a directory, make sure it’s on topic, moderated, and well structured.”

They specifically warn against two types of links:

Buying PageRank-passing links or randomly exchanging links are the worst ways of attempting to gather links and they’re likely to have no positive impact on your site’s performance over time.

So does that mean Article marketers are dunces? Since they hold all the cards close to their chest it would be nice if they commented on their view on Guest Blogging, Squidoo lenses (and similar sites) , RSS Directories, Social profiles, Social Bookmarking and Video and podcatsting site links. People use all those linking efforts and are getting results.

There was one comment on that post complaining how a nearly empty site with only 3 links was number one or its main term because it had the exact match domain name while the offended party has a serious deep content relevant site with many more links yet is still #2. One other commenter complained how Google created a lot of these criteria and being a small business has no time or budget for extensive SEO. I wonder what Google makes of that idea?

My take on link building is to build content links on sites where there will be viewers and readers who can be enticed to visit my clients site from the relevant content. I expect Google is fine with that concept. In addition this means Google or search engines are not the only free traffic source no matter how capricious or obscure the meaning of their Virtual Holy Grail Algorithm is there is still a reliable source of targeted traffic.

Links and Visibility- Issuu.com – Good Resource

I like this site. It offers a chance for a company to post many different types of documents and make them highly visible online. The way pages can be flipped and the use of the term Library for where you put your stuff makes it all easy to navigate and use. That is very important. Issuu.com

I can add stuff on Issuu to my Library or upload stuff. I see full product catalogs and magazines. There are some interesting publications I would probably never have found anywhere else.

One think I do like a lot as well is I can add a link which is dofollow to every publication I add and it will show in the view window. I have been getting good results for myself and my clients at DocStoc and Scribd, which means views there by people and I have links in there too. So I will be adding more to Issuu as well.

I always like to build links at places which can send traffic also.

Selling The Click

Selling the click means getting someone from the search engine results pages (SERPS) to click on your site instead of any of the others.

You can quickly test this for yourself. Go search nearly any term and read the titles and descriptions showing in the results. Some yell click me and some make you wonder Huh? Try a couple of them to get ides on what might work better for your site.

In most, but not all, cases the Meta description you have on your site is what will be shown in the SERPS. It is the 2 lines right below the Title, which is the same as your page title at your site.

The maximum number of characters shown is 160 and if you use any more than that you will see your description cut short and ended with …

You want to be descriptive and encourage the searcher to come to your site. Sell the click to him.

Increase Site Traffic with Article eBooks

You can increase your site traffic by taking articles you have written, turning them into ebooks and uploading them to 2 well trafficed free ebook sites.

The first one is Free eBooks which is ranked 14,759 in alexa and showing 231,914 visitors in June 2010. The traffic graph at Compete.com is showing a decidedly upward trend too.

The second site is Get Free eBooks it is showing 26,126 at Alexa and 92K visitors and up42% in traffic.

You want to make your article, or better a few articles into a pdf. The easiest way to do that is with the CuteFTP writer which is free and installs as a printer driver so when you print any text or document you can easily made a pdf file.

When I do this I use ebooks that have not only links to my sites but I add affiliate links in the context of what the niche is if its one of my sites. For most of my clients I am doing articles already or posting their articles in article directories so the content is at hand.

Targeted Website Traffic with Documents

Targeted website traffic and links can be gained form documants you already have.

Getting targeted website traffic is really more important than anything. It is entirely possible to get thousands of poorly targeted website visitors and have every one of them click the back button. This can happen, I know, I have done it. It was not that the website was bad, it may or may not be. Its not that they were all stupid, th may or may not be. It is just that those people are not interested in what that site is about at that time.

My idea about getting targeted traffic is to situate some type of content somewhere people who are interested in that will find it.

2 places to put content are Scribd.com and Docstoc.com . When I check my account there I see hundreds of people and in some cases thousands of people have read these documents. I do not track the clicks and probably should but I just don’t have time to do everything I should do. I feel for the few minutes it takes me the hundreds of reads are fine. I see one that was up for a month as of today has 83 reads at Scribd and 109 at Docstoc.

The articles written for article directories are fine to use. Take them as word .doc or make them into .pdf files. One advantage over some article directories is I can put my links in context. The documents are indexed.

SEO means traffic and targeted website traffic comes from people finding and reading my content. Scribd shows 4.7 million unique visitors for June 2010 and 6.7 million total visitors, it is 233 in Alexa. Docstoc is showing 2.9 million uniques and 3.6 total visitors for the same June 2010 and is 701 at Alexa.

Be thinking people and traffic when looking for places to build links.

Taking a Second Look at Google Friend Connect

Originally I added the Members widget but recently see Google Friend Connect has a lot more interesting widgets. Some of these could be very useful to someone who wanted to promote their blog and business.

Social Bar

Let users sign in, view other members, leave comments, and see recent site activity from the top or bottom of your website. I am going to add this one as soon as I find time to figure out how to add it to the Thesis theme. A short trip to the support forum should do it.

Comments

Let users post comments and video links. Posts can apply to a specific page or an entire website.

Ratings and Reviews

Let users rate and review content on your page — books, photos, songs, etc.

Interests Polls

Ask your visitors questions relevant to your site via a poll that adds to their profile. Answers can enhance AdSense and the featured content gadget. This gadget works in concert with the Interests feature.

Recommendation

Let users recommend their favorite pages, surfacing your site’s most popular content.

Featured Content

Display content from your site based on the interests of your site’s visitors. Using Google site search, this gadget will automatically display content that matches the interests expressed by your site’s visitors.

Newsletter

Help members sign up for your newsletter by providing their email address if they haven’t yet specified one.

Easy Automatic Backlinks

Not only will this method get you easy automatic back links but they are also free. It fact easy is not even the best word to use because once you do one thing there is nothing you ever have to do again to keep getting backlinks from doing this. Even when you are fishing for cupcakes at the expresso bar you could be getting backlinks. Is that a lazy enough solution? I hope so.

Just add the RSS Footer plugin by Yoast. That’s it. Then when ever someone pulls feeds then an anchor link with your blog name is included. If you are a little more ambitious and don’t have any cupcake icing on your fingers you can submit your blog to a lot of RSS feed directories so more people looking for content can find you. Maybe you get on a news site.
