Willie Parker and Larry Foote Updates.

Nothing new from last night. It seems both sides intend on discussing fully the oppertunity here in DC. One foot note to add, Willie Parker was only given a one-way ticket. Not sure what that means, but it seems certain that the Skins want him here.

RT @RedskinsInsider: RT @RadioFreeAndy: @RedskinsInsider No update of Willie Parker or Foote? People are going to start missing Vinny with his “leaks”

As for Larry Foote, he will go to Arizona to meet with the Cardinals staff there. He mentioned he wanted to make those two visits. According to my sources, DC and Arizona appear to be the leading candidates simply because he has a chance to start in either city. Pittsburgh, not so much.

What should the Skins look for with today's meetings with Willie Parker and Larry Foote?

Looking forward to today’s meetings with Larry Foote and Willie Parker. I am interested to see if the Skins will make a contract offer to either of these players and if either (or both) of these players will sign. Can you honestly say the Skins are deep at linebacker? They appear to have decent depth, but the game is totally different if you will run a 3-4 base. If looks like a lock that Andre Carter and Brian Orakpo will be on the outside, as they both had great stats last year and got to the quarterback with regularity. But who plays in the middle with London Fletcher? Is Rocky McIntosh your man? Is H.B. Blades a good fill in? I do think Foote adds experience and size to balance out the smaller Fletcher. Foote played on both Steeler Super Bowl winning teams (XL, XLII), and will be reunited with linebacker coach Lou Spanos.

What about Willie Parker? Surely his playing time/carries has gone down the last few seasons. But it would be nice to have some veteran presence in the offensive backfield with Clinton Portis. It would give credibility to the backfield, and pushing Portis and threatening him for the starter position. Should Parker be signed, I expect him to still have decent speed in his running game. Mix that in with the new offensive system the Skins will employ and the running game should be improved.

With Rock Cartwright released, I expect the Skins coaching staff to begin discerning who steps up as the special team standout and leader. Cartwright was great in doing what he was told on special teams and with him gone that needs to be addressed. As a special teamer, he would be missed more so than Antwaan Randel El, who was ineffective as a punt returner. When bringing in linebackers and running back, this type of blue collar player must be on the Skin’s radar.

How have the Redskins done so far in the free agency period?

We have all been accustom to the Redskins spending on free agents the same way a 16 year old girl spends with her dad’s credit card. So far during this free agency signing period, we have seen something different, we have seen a professional approach not seen here in quite some time.

Personally, signing someone with likes of Julius Peppers is not a bad signing, if the price is right. But the price will only be right for him. There were rumors of the Skins ready to pull the trigger on him, but once open season began, they didn’t even make a peep. Why pay top dollar for a player, who is aging and perhaps has already seen his bests days. Friday, came and went, and the only news coming out of Redskins Park were of Emmitt Smith trying to bash Dan Snyder.

Instead, the Skins talked with at least three offensive linemen, and signed one. Artis Hicks, 3 years $9million, is the first person signed this free agency period. Hicks is not a wide receiver. He is not a running back with 15 years on his resume. He is not a cornerback who used to be good great 15 years ago. He is a man who fills an area of need. Now Hicks, isn’t a top tier type of lineman, but is a blue collar one who is familiar with the system. For the price which he came, I feel it was a good signing.

The Redskins continue to meet with players, and some are leaving without offers. I see this as a total step in another direction. There is nothing wrong with getting to know players who would like to come in. Just because they performed well in the past, is no given that they will perform well now. Bruce Allen has said he looks to add players who will be “good teammates”. If Allen is looking for good men to be good teammates, hopefully they will help make the Redskins a good team.

The Redskins have appointsments to meet with players early next week and as early as Monday. The players coming in are: Larry Foote, Willie Parker, and Ma’ake Kemoeatu.

Free agency has hit Ashburn, but how will the Redskins hit the market?

Last night we said goodbye to Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts, Fred Smoot, Cornelius Griffin, and Randy Thomas among others. 10 players in all were released by the Redskins. I could have swore once the massacre started that it was only a matter of time until the next huge splash was made. I waited and waited, and there it was: Casey Rabach agrees to extend his contract. I believe the deal was $12 mil for 3. Also Philip Daniels re-signs, Lorenzo Alexander signs, and now Mike Williams (yes the guy who lost 100 pounds) has been signed.

The only confirmed free agents that are in talks or intend to talk with the club are LT Chad Clifton and RT Tony Pashos, both if picked up would be additions to areas with needs. Word has it that Rex Grossman has been gaining interest in the Redskins’ FO. Grossman was formerly with the Chicago Bears but more recently with the Texans organization.

It now appears the Redskins have a plan in place, or so we are led to believe. I would like to assume that, the Skins go at the market and address needs when the asking prices aren’t out of this world. It seems for once we have a front office not interested in making big moves, but rather making moves that appear best for the team.

How do I think Russell Okung did at the draft?

It was a well documented fact that I wanted Russell Okung, OT Oklahoma State. I feel that with the retirement of Chris Samuels and obvious retooling of the offensive line that, it is a smart choice out of necessity rather than glamour.

Over the weekend, Okung and fellow offensive lineman from the University Maryland, Bruce Campbell, we seen to be work out warriors. Each man excelled in the Friday morning workouts, particularly in the bench press.

Later on in the Combine, Okung sustained a groin injury that prevented him from continuing his exhibition, and Campbell went on to be the darling. Does this make Campbell a better pick than Okung? At this point, I would still say no. A good work out is not the only or best way to determine a player’s worth. You have to look at the bigger picture, and personally I still take Okung over Campbell.

However, the groin injury does worry me, slightly. You want players to be durable, especially rookies. Why was Okung injured? Was he not in the best shape or condition he could have been? These are all factors you consider when you are a GM, you don’t just want the best looking player, but you want the best player who will play in top form for the whole season.
