The landscape in Paso Robles is so beautiful. Ever changing scenery with the seasons brings some gorgeous skies and mountain pics. I captured the following on my silly little Iphone 4s so not the greatest but still lovely.

Mobile Home Make Over

It was a very busy two days for me in Paso Robles! We had purchased a mobile home out by the lake and every chance I get I spend a couple days making it over!

I love decorating and painting and D.I.Y. I am not afraid to try anything and not too proud to admit when I am not particularly good at it! But I do know I love to paint. That has to be the most bang for your buck when it comes to a make over.

Well here we go. Before and after shots of what I accomplished on this last trip.

First project: Update the kitchen.
Tile Project

The kitchen had the standard 70s wallpaper. I vinyl blue and white floral pattern.

First I removed the blue tiles and then did some patch repair with wall plaster.

I picked out a square 12x12 ceramic tile with the little bitty squares so I could easily cut with scissors and not have to bother with a wet saw. I laid the mastic and put the tile in place.

One side done! Easy as pie! Notice how I cut out the tile around the outlet without removing the plate. I know cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater! Good thing I love pumpkin!

On around the window and on to the other side. Grout, seal and wipe clean! Notice I even cut the molding to frame out the window! Whew. I am not good with angles!

Project One Finished! I love the look and the tile really made the cabinets look decent so I won't need to replace them, just a little updating with knobs and hinges and they will do for now. Note to self: need to come up with something better over the microwave!

Project Two: Paint

I went with Whisper Grey (Olympus) for the walls in the kitchen and the living room. I love the way the grey makes the white pop. I need to finish all the molding at the top with just plain white. That will be the last thing when I am done painting everything else.

Then my contrast color to bring all the grey, stone, and woodwork (posts on those projects later) together and to warm up the rooms I chose Corner Baker (Valspar). I LOVE it! It really goes well with the greens in the furniture and pictures that I currently have in there for now!

Next Project: Declutter

I love to decorate and sometimes get carried away. In the bathrooms there is this wallpaper that is red, white and blue and I got carried away with the whole theme. So much so that I got sick of it very quickly. Note to self: less is best!

So here is the before and the after of the bathroom toned down. Next trip I plan to paint it grey. I also want to replace the sink with one made out of half of a wine barrel.

I removed a lot of the nic nacs and replaced the valance over the tub. Simple and so much better!

Next trip: Wood on the wall between pass through and den:

We bought the redwood bender board and will put it vertically on this wall. That will complete the wood, stone and paint projects!

Here is the slats I bought and put them in the yard to get weathered until I get out there again hopefully in March!

Birch Trees

I love the look and feel of birch trees and I love to paint them.
They have a unique look with the way the white on the trunk is highlighted with black (I'll call them divets).

As far as landscapes go, I love the fall when the leaves turn their glorious colors of reds, yellows, and oranges. I tried to capture those colors in my paintings.

New Painting Furniture Projects

I just finished painting a bunch of furniture! I enjoyed doing these because I used grey as the base instead of my normal white. I love how they turned out! I also tried a new technique for the tops. Everything I did and used is explained below each picture.

I found this old tilt top table and sanded her down to remove the shine off the wood.

I added two coats of grey paint (Behr).

I then did a dry brush of white chalk paint around the edges and on the details on the legs.

On the top I did a transfer of a graphic from the Graphic Fairy. I used Block Posters to enlarge the graphic and printed it out on my inkjet printer onto parchment paper and then burnished it onto the top. After I got the look I desired with stain and dry brush I sprayed the whole top with a clear matte finish. I love the way it turned out!

My next project was a sofa table and I used the same paints and used another graphic in the same manner. Here are the before and after pics.

This also turned out very well. I was also pleased with the end result.

Onto the next projects. Again using the same two paints but this time I used vinyl to create a stencil (on my silhouette) and painted the dresser. Then I used the vinyl and applied it straight onto the little chest. They really compliment each other.

Lastly I painted a twin bed frame I had but this time the bed was painted white satin (Behr) and I did the details in the grey paint. Very cute!

All the pieces went to the shop today and they really made the booth come alive!

Drawing Fantasy

I recently purchased the book How to draw & paint Fairyland by Linda Ravenscroft. I was drawn to all the impish characters and the complete array of drawings to incorporate in a fairyland. Everything from homes, castles, gnomes, imps, fairies, dragson, etc. You name it - it was there!

So I decided to try my hand at a few drawings today since I've been under the weather and trying to take it easy (not easy for me to do).

My first go around was using a picture of a tree that I had captured on a walk not to long ago.

Here is what I drew from this inspiring old tree...

I drew the hobit house in the big hole and made steps that go up into it.

Next, I wanted to try a fairy. Now mind you, drawing faces is pretty new to me and I have not had any classes on structure (which I need badly).

I was pretty happy with my first rough draft. I did better than I thought I would but still have a long way to go!

Ok so moving on!

My kitty decided to curl up on my lap so I quickly drew a sketch of her cuz I love her sooo much! She staid still long enough for me to capture the top half of her dozing off so I improvised on the bottom half...

I imagined her dreaming of all these fun little creatures!

There was one drawing in the book that I really think is so cute so I tried that next. Never mind the princess, gotta work on those lips ha ha.

I just think that little frog prince is so cute!

Then I decided to draw some more houses. Put the faces to rest for a bit.

I like the little town of mushrooms so I drew that. I want to try to make one more holidayish next but first, learn to draw them.

That was a lot of fun!

For my last drawing I attempted, yes, another face. This time I did it very loosely and tried very hard not to get hung up in perfection as I usually do. I think she turned out pretty good - at least I am happy with her!

I think the one eye on the right is up too high so I will have to make an adjustment and give it another go!

Well that is all I did for today! What do you think?

New Paintings

I have been very busy creating items for sale in my shop at State Street Market Shops and for two holiday craft fairs. I started with some watercolors as I am so inspired by all the posts I see on Facebook of these whimsical designs.

Here is one I did of the carriage for Cinderella.

The next thing I worked on was an old truck in acrylics on canvas.

I really enjoyed painting this one. I just love the old vintage cars.

Then I did an oil painting and this was my first very large painting ever. I absolutely loved painting it!

To take a break from painting, I did some crafting next. I had made a bulletin board for a challenge on Facebook and had so much fun that I made some of these for the craft fare:

I also tried my hand using my new Cameo Silhouette and vinyl. Made some cute little products.

So as you can see, I've been pretty busy painting and crafting!

I am so excited to be a part of "Where Bloggers Create 2013"
My crafting/art/bedroom/sewing/you name it room is just what sounds like.
The room that fills many needs of a small family.

My daughter moved out about 4 years ago to attend college. Savannah College of Art and design (wonder where she got that from?) ha ha.
Anyways that left me a whole room to myself. Well sorta.

I had to keep the room functional for her visits so in went a murphy bed in the closet. It fit perfectly! I could not believe it. But there went the closet!

So this is what I ended up doing with the little room.

This is from the door looking in. Yep it is small.

This is my work area for jewelry making, designing, anything that I need good lighting and the work is not messy like painting and glue. I have another space for that.

This is on the other wall and I can paint and glue to my hearts content. Won't hurt this little folding table!

My oil painting is next to that. I have to pull this out when I'm ready to paint and behind all that is the closet with the murphy bed.

Then next to that is my printing station. I have 3 printers behind my rolling art case. Two are for photos and the top is for paper, shrinky dinks, etc., color of course!

Now for my wall of crafting supplies. This took me awhile to decide what was going to make the most sense and would fit on the little wall. Ikea and Target.

Yeppers! I love the ikea storage bins! There are different size drawers, strong and very clean looking. for the little spaces left over I created a tower of plastic totes. I can easily remove the drawers while crafting and put them back. Then again to Ikea for the black and white HUGE covered collapsible totes!

These drawers hold so much stuff! I just got around to putting everything where it goes but still have to organize the drawers themselves!

See how nice it looks! The TV and the computer as well as my weighing station sits on top of all these. Must have for any crafters! Love that my computer hooks up to the TV and I can see everything in BIG screen!

I've been so inspired by the blogs that show all their material so nicely "filed". I had recently purchased this glass cabinet and didn't know what I was going to use it for so now I know! I've started at the bottom. Now to get out my tote full of fabric. Oh did you notice the green boxes? Yep another use for my little room.

Yoga! I recently had surgery for a torn rotator cuff (which has taken me away from crafting boo hoo) so I am determined to get that arm working again and get on with it. At least I have space in the middle of the floor to exercise!

Now don't for one minute think I've got this whole room so organized and have no "junk". I have to store the stuff like wrapping paper and boxes so they don't get ruined. They were just removed for the photos!

AND, yep, look at my garage full of stuff that can't quite possibly fit and, of course, could never be gotten rid of. ha ha

Well that's about it! I have fun in my little space. I also take a break now and then in my old rocker... LOVE

OMG I just noticed this in one of my pictures....

OH NO - EMPTY DRAWERS - CAN'T HAVE THAT!

Guess where I'm headed.....Thrift Shopping. My favorite thing to do!

I just love excuses like this to get me motivated.

Felicity the Cat

This is Felicity the Cat.

And because Felicity is going to my granddaughter's home to be loved by Gracie, Felicity will be the happiest cat ever!

Felicity was born (felted) April 20th, 2013.

She has pretty blue eyes, is grey with white tipped paws and tail.

Felicity also has black stripes and a cute pink nose.

She even has the cutest pink collar with a pretty pink bow!

She is about 2 inches tall and just a fuzzy little cat to love!

Altered Bottles

I love little bottles.

I love their shapes and their prettiness.

I've been wanting to do something with my collection but What?

Then I saw some altered bottles. Oooooh I must do that!

What I love most about doing things like this is giving each item a personality.

Once you start dressing them up they pretty much tell you what they need and when they are done!

Here are two of my nest creations.

It's a start!

This little bottle is so pretty with its little design at the bottom in the glass. I added some old lace an lace applique and some pearls.

Need to find a stopper, wax it on and fill it up with some glitter.

Next - shhh it's a surprise for my sister. She just loves fairy tales and stars.

When you wish upon a star....

I found the star and the stopper at a Goodwill shop! Great find!

I added some beading around the top rim then added pearls on top of the ribbon.

I glued long crystals to the bottom of the stopper so they dangle in the jar. I filled the bottom of the star with none other than magical pixie dust (glitter)!

I need to find a Tinkerbell or Pinochio to put on top of the stopper and it will be done! I think she will love it!

Now on to the rest of my collection!

The Garden Girls

I fell in love with a similar version of these at a show and have been dying to make them myself. It has taken me quite some time and few bucks to find all the pieces that would work together and I finally had enough to bring these girls to life! I call them My Garden Girls! I think they had a fantastic day out watering and gathering flowers!

Completely made with vintage flea market finds, ribbons and bows and flowers!
Meet the group....

Now let me introduce you to each girl.

First we have Sally.

Sally loves birds and flowers.

She has them on her dress and in her basket.

The neat thing about Sally is her lid opens up for you to store your secret treasures!

Next is Miss Potter.

She is my favorite.

She has a pretty wavey little skirt, adorns pearls and carries a watering can.

She is a simple joy!

Then we have Trixie.

She is stout but no doubt just adorable.

Trixie also carries a watering can and she loves flowers and pearls also.

Meet Sylvia.

Sylvia is a little undressed without her hat.

But that can easily be fixed. Fill her little teapot with fresh cut flowers and she will surely smile!

Last but not least is Julia.

Julia just loves dress up! She has her pearls, her crystals and her pretty floral bow. She caries her cute little bucket filled with pretty pink flowers to match her bow!

I just loved making the girls. I think I will have to make some more!

Oil Painting with a Vintage Flare

I love the look of those old black and white or sepia colored photos from the early 1900's. Recreating photos in photoshop can be a challenge to capture the right aged look.

In learning how to oil paint with the tonal method, I fell in love with the process of starting a painting.

To me it was exactly the vintage look I tried to recreate in Photoshop.

What I love about this is these oil paintings are one of a kind and created by hand, with love and tenderness.

This painting started out as a rub out.

By turning the photo upside down and rubbing out the highlights

begins the process of capturing the innocence of this little tyke.

Once the rub out is dry it is easy to then fill in the tones with a big brush.

I just love this process!

This reminds me of some gentlemen possibly getting his photo taken just before boarding his yacht for a night of dancing and dining with his elite friends.

This too started upside down!

New Found Hobby - Needle Felting

I have found a new passion!

This craft is called needle felting. Using 100% wool and very, very sharp needles I can create little tiny miniature creatures!

I made this little guy for LeeAnn, my granddaughter.

She named him Alfred.

This little pony was a special request from my granddaughter, Madison.

She wanted a pink horse!

My daughter, Brittany loves ducks

so she was very excited to see this little guy coming her way.

My daughter, Cristina, loves dogs.

This was my very first attempt at the craft.

No doubt, I'm hooked!

One piece at a time, this little guy was created

with tender loving care!

Rag Lamp

At the Speckled Hen show in Paso, I bought these lamp frames.

I had seen this project in malls before and now I had a chance to try it myself.

The two frames were $5.00 each. The larger one was $10.

I purchased White muslin at Walmart (1 yard per lamp and 2 for the big one)

I cut and ripped the fabric in 1 inc increments. Doing this on the fold makes it faster and easier.

I also purchase a skirt at Goodwill that had the white netting and cut it into strips also.

I used the netting at the top. Just tie the strips on one by one and fluff them up.

then I tied the muslin on around the frame.

I left this one open but you can certainly add more. Even add colored ribbon to match your decor.

I found the lamp base at the Goodwill for $5. and it matched very nicely with my other finds.

And there you have it! A romantic simple bedside light.

Rags to Riches

I have a bathroom that has red, white and blue wallpaper. Rather than start over for budget sake, I decided to go with it. I wanted more of the primitive feel so I decided to use red polka dots and blue starts. I found fabric at Walmart and got 2 yards of each. I then cut the fabric into one inch strips and only about 1/2 cut at the fold to tear them into strips with the fraying.

I then added the strips onto the rod with alternating red and blue.

Love the look. It's a shower curtain valance!

Then added the finishing touches....

An upside down towl rack repurposed for a magazine rack with a touch of red, white and blue hearts.

Bright red towels finish that wall off.

Above the toilet I found an old box with two knobs on it and tied the strips to them in bows. Added a bit of the frayed material to drape over the sides and a beaded doily underneath. Then found another old doily and draped it over the front. Added a small bottle, a perfume bottle stuffed with the scraps of material, a red, white and blue star, a red bottle found at a thrift store and the confederate and american flag found at local antique store. Then added a stack of red, white and blue star boxes to teh counter and two blue towels. This completed my little bathroom!

Vintage Kitchen Make Over

We just bought a mobile home out in Mid California and I had so much fun decorating it this last week. I thought I'd share all the little vintage touches I added to the home to make it feel warm and cozy?

I did the kitchen in Aqual and Red. So cute! Found the polka dot curtains on clearance at TJ Max. Picked up the polka dot red oven mitten and aqua towels at Walmart. then found some fun vintage pieces such as the little drawers and a little red wire piece at the Speckled Hen show. Then after a full day of antiqueing brought back some old red handled kitchen utensils and put them in an old colandar with red and aqua polka dot ribbons. Found a cool cork piece (hanging on the wall) and a few other toucheds of red and aqua.

I found this awesome little red drop leaf table and chairs at an antique shop and the red and aqua table cloth! What a great find to add to my motif!

Plastic plates from Kohls Clearance - can't beat that!

Red and White corelle dishes from Walmart.

A repurposed rack (?). Tied red polka dot ribbons on it and use it for a drying rack.

Finally a little drawer shelf, an aqua bookend, and two old red handled kitchen tools.

How to Strip Furniture

I hate stripping paint off of furniture - BUT - I found some amazing stuff that isn't that bad and a few tricks I learned along the way made it really easy.

I found a headboard for sale on Craigs List and when I went to look at it the guy had the whole set, dresser and two night stands on his trailer. They were sadly painted black and white with an obvious failed attempt. I asked if I could purchase them also and he looked surprised but said sure and they were mine!

I went to Lowes and purchased this stripper...

Water based! and very little chemical smell.
I also purchased the necessary tools...

1. old rag
1. green final scrubbing pad
1. paint brush
1. glass bowl
1. putty knife
1. stripping brush
1. drop cloth
1. Dawn dish soap
1. lots of water

Then I got my furniture and placed all on drop cloth.
This is what the set looked like...

At least the whole thing was not covered, but enough to take a awhile.

First you put on the gel stripper with the paint brush. Put enough on that you can see it sitting on the paint. If you don't put enough on and dont get everywhere you will know when you go to scrape it off. No worries, you can always put more and redo. Let it sit according to directions. This one only took 5 minutes!

Then take the putty knive and scrape off the paint. For the hard to get to areas use the stripper brush.
There will be some paint left, no worries!

After I got all the paint off I could using the tools, here is what I did that basically washed the rest away...

Take the final stripper pad and get it wet - wet. Put a dab of Dawn on it and then with little pressure wipe it all over the piece. Then go back over it like you were scouring a pan. With very little scrubbing the rest just wiped off! Be sure to use water to make the suds! The water will not hurt the peice because you immediately use your rag and get it wet, wringed out, to wipe all the suds and remaining paint right off!

It was amazing! Of course I had black goopy stuff all over the drop cloth and on me so be careful where you sit and stand!

The end result netted me a whole bedroom set for $150!!! Can't beat that!

Vintage Kitchen Colors

Disneyland Then and Now

Disneyland - How much fun!
Today me and my kids and grandkids are going to the Happiest Place on Earth!

Takes me down memory lane! Disneyland opened the year my brother we born so we grew up with Disney and Mickey and the Gang!

When I think back on going to Disney as a kid, it's funny but I remember it in black and white, just like the opening day photo...

Make Your Own Birdbath

Just saw this post and loved the idea. Not only is it cute but very green! Saving our environment is important and I just love repurposing things. This post is from http://chiccottagejunk.blogspot.com/#.

There are so many old lamps and old bowls that you can find at thrift shops and flea markets that this would be very easy to do. I think the old metal lamps would be my choice. I could see how the patina could change over time with exposure to the elements. Don't use anything with dangles though, this will scare the birds away!

Child Health Day

Today is Child Health Day. October 1.
Even though we bring awareness to this day in more recent trends with trying to eat healthier, it has been an ageless tradition. Only did we become so spoiled when we became the "drive through" society. But I'm so glad that McDonalds and other chains have added a few more healthy choices!

Vintage Kitchen

I just love the look of vintage items and how people use them in their decor.
I came across this picture on Pinterest and just love the red and white decor in this tiny kitchen.

I just love the red and white, the checkered rug and the cherries sign. I especially love the shelf surround to give more space.

I started collecting bits of red to put in my kitchen. I think it really adds a great color pop regardless of what type of kitchen or what color the kitchen is.

This is some vintage pieces I have found and grouped on top of my frig.

As you can see, my kitchen is painted a turquiose blue and the red works. I also have a small collection of roosters and gnomes on top of my cabinets.

It's a bit of unexpected whimsy. I loved painting the vintage gnome greenware a good friend of mine had. That way I got to paint them the colors I wanted to match my kitchen!

Lastly I used a chandelier I found at an antique shop. Not so much that it was an antique but because of the wood and black iron just really gave me a warm feeling. I added a small black bird I found and I'm looking for little red checkered shades to finish the look.

I'd love to see pics of your vintage finds and how you incorporated them into your kitchen!

New Passion for Oil Painting

I've been taking oil painting classes since January and I've learned a lot. Mostly not to be afraid to try! I'm amazed at the method I have been taught and found to have fast results. Still a long way to learn and perfect but quite pleased with the beginnings! At least I'm not longer afraid to take that first brush stroke!

The method was taught to me by Dominic Vignola www.oilpaintingwithoutdrawing He is a very good teacher and has a method of tonal painting that is incredible. Check out his site for a complete explanation of the method.
