This started as an underwater ice base, but the image is evolving into something more..organic. I think I'll push this further and see where it ends up.

Did two for CA.org's Environment challenge: The first is Shanghai 2112 and the second was for a theme entitled The Dragon's Nest.

Shanghai 2112

Here's my lil writeup: Through the century, rapid development and advancement in engineering spawned seemingly endless amount of super towers. Concerned about the quality of life from a very vocal public, the Government designated specific land plots to preserve the natural parks that near the Huangpu River. In response, powerful real estate moguls crowded all their skyscrapers into the same tiny spaces. The result? A plethora of 500th+ floor towers that meld and blend into each other.

The Dragon's Nest.. although I'll probably call this the Devil's Orchard since those egg like things remind me of grapes :D

The sea has always interested me as a subject to paint, mostly because I find it a complicated subject matter. My all time favorite painter, J.M.W Turner,did the ocean justice (then again, he managed to do most things mere mortals can't do). Recently I've (re)discovered the colorful seascapes by Sorolla which ignited my interest in the ocean. One aspect of Sorolla that I love is that he used an incredibly vibrant color palette, one different from my predominately earthy one. My goal this summer is to start using cool temperature hues and bright values which I normally shy away from.

For fun, I included a gif animation of my progress steps for "Fishermen."

...still in a Summer mood. Scene is mostly from my head although I did use a couple of references, like the green shutters which is based off a a Sketchup 3D model. For fun I put together the steps of this one in a .gif animation

Been in a mood to paint rustic scenes. I've also been looking at Anders Zorn and Sargent and trying to understand their genius method of painting loose + detailed with accurate values.. it seems contradictory. So for this painting, I kept my 'silhouettes' clean but the (digital) paint heavy and opaque in the lights.

Also posted is the photo ref which served as the inspiration, which Tom took while we were in Bermuda last year. I think he took this one while we were in a fast moving boat but fortunately the snap shot was clear enough for all the little things, like the rigging.

As I was going over the bulk of my work that I've done in recent years, I noticed that I haven't painted one single blue sky. I painted many skies but none of them really blue. Also startling is that most of my paintings had the absence of blue colors. I guess that makes sense since I'm mostly inclined to use earthy tones.

Well, it was time to change that!

I took a look at my inspiration folder and found a couple of shots I took when I visited Bermuda last summer. Now there's a country that's surrounded by cool colors of the world. :-)

Thanks to the good people over at BlueCanvas Gallery, I am now selling high quality Giclee prints of my artwork. They offer framed prints as well, but getting it without the frames is cheaper. You can get my prints on either Epson Premium Photo Luster, Epson UltraSmooth Fine Art, or Chromata Canvas papers. Prints can be flat, mounted on a 3/16" gatorboard (or framed.)

Come on in and browse some of the art I have.

Work has been really hectic for me so I'm trying to find brief hours in the night to paint. This is somewhat inspired by Red Dead Redemption, the Hudson River School and just my general desire to get outside as this cold, cold Winter finally(!) lets up.

A few months ago I did an illustration for BlueCanvas's "Back in the Day" contest. So happy to hear they accepted it and this piece runs in their January issue.

Stretching my boundaries a little, I'm starting to paint subject matter I don't normally tackle. So for starters, this one is part robot, part dragon and a little new york inspiration by way of color palette. that, and this city's scaffolding always reminds me it's perpetually under construction.

I think a favorite moment in any illustrator's life is getting published and ArtSquared did an outstanding job printing their book "Digital Painters." I was so lucky to get in, and just want to say thanks to Kirk Slater and Liam Murphy for an amazing book.

...although to be honest, I am ready for Fall. I'm not sure how many more 95f+ days I can handle in New York :-)

I've been meaning to post this new painting I did for ConceptArt's EOW challenge, but I've been sitting on this for a while since I'm not sure if it's absolutely finished, or if I should tweak this some more. I guess time will tell.

And, big thanks to Art-Spire for mentioning me. It's such a welcome surprise :)

This is an illustration of the "Cruz de Ferro", a monument in Spain. Tradition says travelers are supposed to place a rock at the base of the cross as a symbol of arriving. As I was doing some research, I read one report where people are just dumping anything there.
