In a re-creation of the fateful landing on eerily still German-held beaches, Skirmish will be converting their paintball field front acreage into the coast of Normandy on July 15th and 16th.

Leading the Allies into combat will be General Rob Wood and Executive Officer Nyxx Valor. Landing crafts will disgorge US warriors from five locations for their assault across 75 yards of wide open beach-head, complete with bunkers, tanks, and disabled military helicopters. The German forces, led by General Mark Pastore and XO’s George Schaffer and Pat Freida, will be defending the shore lines in an attempt to keep the Allied troops out. Scenario players will also be able to interact with the French resistance fighters, led by Marshal “Ace” DeMedeci.

The Invasion of Normandy is a 24-hour Paintball Scenario Game. The action begins precisely at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 15th at the sound of an air-raid siren. The battle continues until 12:00 noon on Sunday, July 16th. Admission to the event is $49.00 per person and includes all necessary gear. Pre-registration before July 1st is strongly recommended. Official rules, information, and directions to the playing fields can be found at www.Skirmish.com

Skirmish has hosted The Invasion of Normandy for five years now. Every year this scenario game continues to get bigger and better. With over 3000 players expected, Skirmish has planned yet another weekend full of excitement; including a Free Friday (July 14th) Castle Night game on the World Famous Tippmann Castle field, free on-site camping, player raffle, costume contest, and huge trade show…all the big names in the paintball industry will be there!

New this year, Rob Staudinger from Trauma Paintball Central will supply Skirmish players with all their compressed air needs. He will be bringing in over 25 fill stations making for quick and easy tank filling. Skirmish will be handling Co2 fills themselves with their 12-ton custom pressure system from Bradco.

For more information on The Invasion of Normandy, please visit www.Skirmish.com or call 1-800-SKIRMISH (1-800-754-7647). By Scott D. Wagner.

Ever wonder what our "friends" the Canadians do when they aren't busy training operatives to infiltrate our entertainment industry and massing suspiciously along our common border? If Toronto-based Sgt. Splatters (http://www.sgtsplatters.com) is to be believed, Canadians spend every other waking moment playing paintball. Which got me thinking: Who would win a War for North America if the Canadian government somehow talked ours into a paintball-guns-only rule?

As anyone watching the news lately will agree, modern warfare is as much about technology as biology. You may train a thousand 6' 11", 270 lb., highly-motivated bad guys with Kalashnikovs, but if the good guys show up with a satellite, a Predator, and a pair of FA-18s, you're in for a disappointment.

So how dangerous are the Canadians? Or more importantly, how sophisticated is their (paintball) weaponry? I took it upon myself to find out.

Mokal, Inc., of the Great White North
Based in Ontario, Mokal (www.mokal.com) has been manufacturing paintball guns since 1986. For a time they sold their baseline gun, the Titan, through PMI, but Mokal now markets its guns under its own name. No, you still can't buy one directly from them, but you can buy a Titan or Fokus clearly labeled as a Mokal through Action Village (www.actionvillage.com).

I opted for the Titan T1 ($94.00 plus shipping).

The Mokal Titan T1
Merry Christmas!
The good folks at Action Village sent me a Titan T2 instead of a T1. What's the difference? The T1, T2, and T3 are essentially the same gun but in vertical bottle, bottom-line, and bottom-line-plus-gas-through-foregrip configurations, respectively. When I called Action Village to report the error, their representative said, "Oh, well, then Merry Christmas." (It would have cost them more to replace my gun than the difference in price.) I removed the stainless-wrapped bottom-line to turn the T2 back into a T1 for testing purposes.

What's in the Box?
The Titan, of course, along with a ten-page, photocopied instruction manual. The instructions include the usual fare: an obligatory "this is not a toy" warning, instructions on gassing and degassing the gun, a parts diagram, assembly and disassembly procedures, and a troubleshooting guide; more than I got with my Kingman Spyder, but less than the 30-minute video that ships with an AT-85. Also in the box is a spare parts kit with a complete set of o-rings and an extra "valve cup seal/screw."

Design
The Titan looks very much like a Tippmann Pro/Carbine. In fact, I'd venture to say Mokal set out to copy and improve the Pro/Carbine design. It has a .45-style grip frame married to an inline, open-bolt blowback receiver with the bolt handle protruding out the left side. Unlike a Pro/Carbine, however, it also has a vertical gas port where a CO2 tank connects to the gun in its T1 variant. Of course, you can also connect a bottom-line, gas-through foregrip, or Palmer Vertical Stabilizer there. The Titan receives paintballs through a left-hand powerfeed with a plug that can be turned to prevent balls from entering the gun.

The Titan also features "near-tool-free" disassembly. Unscrew the barrel and the rear endcap, then start removing innards. Hammer spring, linkage arm cover, and linkage arm come loose with your bare hands. You then use the linkage arm to coax the hammer out the back of the gun and the bolt out the front. The last step is to slide the valve assembly out the back. This step requires a rod or pencil to push the valve all the way out (hence my "near-tool-free" caveat).

Titan Innards from Left to Right: Bolt, Linkage Arm, Main Valve Assembly, Hammer, Cocking Handle, Cocking Handle Retention Pin, Hammer Spring, Endcap, Velocity Adjuster Screw.
How does it feel?
Solid. That's the word that comes to mind when you hold the Titan for the first time. It is heavy, compact, and very substantial. Even the milled aluminum trigger seems over-engineered. Given the price, I was expecting a light-weight, almost toyish feeling gun, but instead the Titan feels more like a real firearm. It's no OICW, mind you, but it definitely feels capable in your hands.
What looked like a plastic receiver in the few pictures I found online is actually thick aluminum with a heavy powder coat; only the grip is plastic. Shaking the Titan produces no noise at all - no rattles, no pings, no nothing. Every part on the Titan seems designed to survive abuse.

How does it shoot?
Loud. It also kicks quite a bit. Naturally this hinders accuracy during long bursts, but the Titan's single-finger trigger and relatively stiff trigger pull conspire to make extended volleys difficult. The gun encourages you to make three- or four-round bursts rather than lay down continuous streams of paint.

Cold weather doesn't seem to affect paint velocity. The Titan shot without severe fluctuations at the chronometer even without a regulator or expansion chamber. This may in fact be an additional benefit of the Titan's low rate of fire, which allows the liquid CO2 time to convert even at lower temperatures. Velocity is set using the adjusting knob at the back of the gun, and can be locked by tightening a hex screw on the knob.

How does it play?
My first day out with the Titan was a disappointment. I got shot out nearly every time, and had difficulty going head-to-head with the double-finger-triggered, compressed-air-breathing, DYE-Boomstick-toting punks I usually play with. (Just kidding guys.) Then I realized I was trying to make the Titan be something it is not.

It is not a $400 gun, for one thing, so I modified my playing style accordingly. I got a little sneakier, picked my shots more carefully, and allowed other players to get closer before opening fire. I also used the Titan's loud muzzle to my advantage, firing it in the general direction of advancing players to make them think twice about their next move. I can honestly say I had a great time playing with the Titan once I stopped trying to be a front-line commando.

Accuracy
In my experience, the Titan is neither deadly accurate nor incapable of hitting the broadside of a barn. Paint tends to veer off to one side or the other slightly, then shoot straight a couple of times, then veer again. If you shoot a few balls on-target at medium range, one of them will hit. That's about what you should expect from a gun in this price range. The stock barrel seems smoother than the one that shipped with my Spyder Xtra. In fact, it reminds me a lot of my DYE Xcel.

Reliability
The Titan rarely breaks balls. I shot three kinds of paint through it during my testing: Big Ball, RPS El Tigré, and PMI Premium. The paint performed from best to worst in that order; Big Ball never broke, but PMI Premium broke a few times. I suspect this has to do with the relative thickness and consistency of each brand's shell. Even after a ball break, however, the Titan keeps shooting (albeit with decreased accuracy) until you have time to squeegee the barrel. No ball break ever required disassembly of the gun.

Final Thoughts
The Titan seems like a good value for the money. I bought mine for $94 on-line (because no local stores carry them to my knowledge). New players will outgrow the Titan as soon as they shoot a more expensive gun, but would be wise to hang on to it as a back-up or as a loaner for friends rather than sell it for what it's worth used.

As a rental marker, the Titan is probably ideal for the same reasons Tippmann Pro-Carbines are so popular. After all, the last thing a new player needs is to be worrying about his gun all day. Field owners demand reliability over flash. They want customers shooting paint (that they bought at the field, of course) not staring at their guns wondering why they won't cock.

If you buy a Titan knowing full well what it is (and isn't) you won't be disappointed.

But what about the Canadian menace? Does the Titan give them an edge?

The answer is: No way, eh. Tell those hosers to take off. We have beauty Automags and Palmers. We'll steam roller 'em for sure.

Ratings
Quality/Workmanship: 8/10
Style: 6/10
Accuracy: 7/10
Value: 8/10

New three-man tournament league kicks off in Vegas and airs on WGN

Article about a new televised three-man tournament league kicking off in Vegas. The three-man paintball teams--some of the best in tournament paintball, including Dynasty, XSV, and the Naughty Dogs--enter the arena under an archway of lights and smoke. It feels just like the big time, as action sports producer Duke Hillinger calls announces the players over the PA system. Today is the PMI X-Ray goggles

The first thing we noticed and kind of liked was the price, which is around $25 for the non-thermal version in most places. There is not much padding, with the only pads being around the eyes. Some people like this as it makes them a bit liter and others do not. We did like the built in visor as we believe it is big enough to actually provide some shade. You will have to buy some kind of no fog spray as these non thermal lenses will fog, but after you spray them there should be no problems. We where unable to find replacement lenses but this problem is offset by the low price. Overall, probably not a bad option for beginners but will not quite cut it for the more experienced or avid player. Remember to check back here in a day or two as we will add some links to buy these goggles.

Tony

MSN Sports Filter Interview: Rob Corddry

Excerts from and interview with Rob Corddry who will be starring in the upcoming film "Blackballed".

MSN Sports Filter Interview: Rob Corddry

For viewers of The Daily Show, Rob Corddry should need no introduction. If you're not watching The Daily Show...I'm sorry, the kind of help you need is beyond our meager powers.

Rob will soon appear in his first starring film role: "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story", a tale of disgrace and redemption in the fast-paced, cut-throat world of paintball. He was kind enough to share a few moments with MSN Sports Filter to discuss paintball etiquette, gunplay in sports, and the Sox. Sports Filter's questions in bold.

How did you get mixed up in the high-stakes world of paintball
Let me ask you a question: how would you categorize paintball?

I guess somewhere in the Venn intersection of extreme sports and sporting, like hunting and whatnot.

It says it's an extreme sport, and it purports to be the third most popular extreme sport, although I think it's probably the least extreme.

Well, you don't get shot at while skateboarding.

Maybe not in your neighborhood.

Writing wise, how did the movie come together?

Brant [Sersen, the director] came up with the story after playing paintball. He got together with a high school friend of his, they contacted Paul Scheer and I, who they knew from the UCB Theatre. Me and Paul helped flesh out the story, and then we started casting a bunch of our friends.

What good’s being in a movie if you can't cast a bunch of your friends?

Exactly.

Your character in the movie is banned from paintball for the offense of "wiping". [removing paint from your outfit to make it look as if you haven’t been hit] Which is a worse example of cheating in sports: "wiping" or steroids?

Wiping, definitely. My character got kicked out of paintball for 10 years. In baseball, you can do steroids and still make millions, still chase a HR record.

And you can still get cheered by your home crowd in San Francisco.

Yeah, exactly. I don't get that at all. I'm a Sox fan – you wear your pants wrong, we'll boo you. We get six months of winter here, so…

Maybe it's the weather factor. Laid back Northern Californians are more rock n' roll about the whole steroids thing. Someone should write a dissertation on the effects of climate on the disposition of a fan base.

I will demand 10% of whatever you make off of that.

Great, I'll have my lawyer draw it up.

Let's make that happen, as they say.

The film has already played a bunch of festivals. Do you expect (or have you had) paintballers critique your portrayal of their world?

Brant was very particular about honoring rules and etiquette of paintball. For instance, if we had our gun plugs out, we always had masks on. We know paintballers are our main audience. Plus, they have guns – and they sting.

I make it a rule not to piss off people with guns, if I can help it.

I got shot in head by this one dude.

Really?

Yeah, we were shooting my big scene, my Willem Defoe moment I like to call it, and they hired this crack shot to shoot me in the chest. He fires and hits me right in the exact two-inch spot not covered by my helmet. And then I have to look at him smirking at me while I just wanna slap that smile off his face.

What other sports do you think could be helped by shooting at your opponents?

I think we're moving that way. Just this year, they finally cancelled Gun Day at Yankee Stadium…I think most sports could be made marginally more exciting by introducing gun play. Me, I would like to shoot at ski jumpers.

You could have the biathletes do that. They've already got the guns.

Ski jumpers or ice dancers. Those guys have really got it coming.

Here in New York, a lot of publishing companies play against each other in a pretty competitive softball league. Does The Daily Show have a softball team?

We used to, until the organizer quit and moved to LA. We used to play Howard Stern, Conan O'Brien, all the comedy shows.

Who were the heavy hitters in that league?

I don't think they're around anymore, but Tough Crowd used to be real good. They had a lotta alpha male comedians.

I can imagine a lotta classic beer-drinkin' sluggers on that team. I can see Colin Quinn having some opposite field power.

Colin Quinn's probably a power hitter, I have no doubt of that.

I know Jon Stewart's a big Mets fan. Is Yankee paraphernalia banned in the Daily Show offices?

I wish. It would make work so much easier. There’s an enormous amount of obnoxious, die hard Yankee fans that never cease to piss me off. Including my brother. I'm more of a romantic Red Sox fan; he's the guy who can tell you what Rico Petrocelli batted back in '67.

What're your hopes for this year for the Sox?

I don't know. It’s a completely new team, completely new players. Baseball season kinda snuck up and smacked us in the face this year, didn't it?

It did. I’ve been to two games at Shea already, though.

[This prompted a discussion about how one becomes a Mets fan, and how it took me years to realize that while Game 6 of the '86 World Series was triumphant for millions of Mets fans, it was a paintball shot to the head for millions of Sox fans. Rob admitted that now that the Sox have finally won a World Series, he can -- begrudgingly -- wish the Mets no harm. The conversation then turned to the issue of geographic fan demarcation.]

I wonder where the dividing line is in Connecticut for Sox vs. Yankees fans?

I would guess it's wherever the dividing line is for commuting to NY and Boston.

That makes sense. Hartford's a lot closer to Massachusetts, I think.

The last time I was in Hartford, it seemed very tense in terms of fandom. The local bars have to cater to both fanbases, but you could tell it was an uneasy truce—where to place the Yankees neon signs vs. the Sox neon signs, and why.

Someone needs to step in and keep the peace.

Hartford needs a Gandhi.

"Blackballed" opens April 13th at New York's Two Boots Pioneer Theatre, with a wider release to follow. Not all markers are made the same and you should be educated when you go to purchase one.
Tony

Paintball Guns – Tips to help you choose a marker
by: Caroline Smith

There are so many paintball guns for sale these days, it can be hard knowing just what sort of marker to buy. You want a decent gun for your money, but do you really need to spend a fortune on the latest technology to survive out on the paintballing field? When it comes to buying any kind of paintball gear, speaking to experienced players is a great way to get info on where to buy the best paintball stuff. The following information should also help you make the decision.

When paintball games first took off, players had to make do with basic guns that could only shoot a single shot each time they were cocked. Then technology advanced to pumps, where you could feed paintballs into the breach by rocking your gun forward. Paint tubes came next, which allowed paintballers to fire many times. After that, hoppers were introduced, which were thought to be a fantastic advance for the sport as they could hold all the paint you’d need for the game.

Semi automatic guns then appeared on the scene, which fired balls much faster. Motorized loaders were added and Autocockers became all the rage, especially among paintballers who played in tournaments. Now a range of electronic guns are available, that can be programmed to do whatever you want. Full autos can carry on firing as long as the trigger is down, and offer a selection of firing modes and adjustable rates of fire. Because they can shoot so fast, many recreational paintball fields require players to put a tournament lock on their gun before they play so as not to have an unfair advantage over their opponents.

Which type of marker you buy depends on your level of ability and how often you want to play. For beginners, many stores offer special paintball gun packages, which include all the basic equipment such as masks, air tanks and hoppers. These starter kits can be good value. Good entry level brands that are reasonably priced include Kingman Spyder, Tippmann and Piranha guns. Look for guns that allow upgrades, so you can build your own gun by trying different barrels and triggers, as your skills progress. For more advanced paintballers, quality markers include Smart Parts and Angle electronic guns.

A combination of tactical skills, team strategy and a reliable gun are key. Good paintball markers should be light enough to easily maneuver, while being robust enough to stand up to the fast paced action. There are some fantastic online paintball stores that sell a range of guns and paintball supplies at affordable prices, so you should be able to find a gun that’s right for you and your budget!

Real Action Paintball at the 2006 Paintball Expo

Real Action Paintball is coming to the 2006 Paintball Expo. in Pomona, CA, check out the press release at the link below.

Real Action Paintball at the 2006 Paintball Expo

History of paintball

Have you ever wondered where or how paintball started. The most common version is that paintball markers where created in the 70s to mark livestock and other objects on ranches. Later in the 80s some people started playing a game of elimination in the woods by their house using their paintball guns. Word of this game got out, grew and was named National Survival game and thus later changed to capature the flag. Since then many playing fields have been opened around the world and many many versions of games have been developed. For more on versions of games please see yesterdays post. I thought we would list a few to start bringing people up to speed and get the thoughts flowing about different options.

Raid · Raid is played out similarly to Total Elimination and uses the same rules. In Raid, one team begins in a fort or a somewhat enclosed area such as a village. The opposing team begins on the outskirts of this fort or village, and must successfully raid and hold the village for a certain amount of time. If the raiding team does not take control of the fort or village in a certain amount of time, then the team that was originally in control of the fort wins.

River Passage · River passage requires a bridge and a creek to play. The format of this game is highly customizable. Generally, two teams start on opposite sides of the bridge or the river, and attempt to cross a “main” player across the bridge to win the game. The main player may only be crossed once a flag is captured from the other side of the river, and brought back to a team’s base. This game has normal Total Elimination rules, and can be played as Total Elimination as well. In Scenario games, the river or creek must be crossed as only one of a few objectives. Another popular format is having one team with better players and possibly vehicles or mortars try to defend the other side of the river, where an objective is held.

King of the Hill · There are many variations of King of the Hill. The most common objective is to get a designated player from a team on top of a hill in the center of a field, to capture a flag from a hill, or to take control of a certain hill on the field for a designated time period. As you can see, there are many different possibilities when playing this game. A common King of the Hill scenario game features an objective, such as a mythical castle, object, or even paintballs at the top of the hill which two or more teams struggle to hold and take.

Paintball Guide UK

Website to book and play at different paintball venues across the UK. Very nice.

Tony

Illinois Bill Altered
By Bill Mills - Feb 2006
In October of 2005, Daniel J Burke (D), the 23rd district representative in the Illinois state House of Representatives filed House Bill 4132 with the state clerk. In the following months, it moved through the legislative process, being read before the house, and gaining additional sponsors. The bill as originally introduced would ban ownership or sale of replica rocket launchers, grenade launchers, and all replica weapons.

In the last days of January 2006, concern started growing in the Illinois paintball community, that the broad term “replica weapon” would potentially include paintball guns. As Illinois is home to numerous significant paintball companies and businesses including PMI, Shocktech, Centerflag Products, Airgun Designs, The Badlandz, Challenge Park Xtreme, Realms of Ruin, Country Club Paintball, and more, a shutdown of the sport in the state could have a significant impact throughout the US.

Fortunately this was not to be the case. Gretchen Shay of Challenge Park Xtreme and Bob Lanstrum of EMR and Gunslingers Paintball quickly spread the word about the bill through the paintball industry and paintball media contacts, resulting in numerous faxes, phone calls and e-mails to Illinois legislators. Within a matter of days, the bill was almost completely re-written by the house judiciary committee. The new version was amended February 1st, 2006. Instead of making replica weapon ownership a crime, the new bill would make it a misdemeanor “for any person to use any replica rocket propelled grenade launcher, bazooka, artillery piece, grenade, mine, bomb, or items similar to weapons designed and manufactured for military purposes or replicas of those items in a threatening manner.”

Even if a court would decree that a paintball gun fell under the definition of a replica firearm, the new wording would not criminalize ownership, merely the misuse of threatening someone with it.

Welcome

Welcome to Paintball Fanatics.
