I mean our house is nestled right into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains....THE famous "Purple Mountains majesty" and all that.

But when it gets to be this time of year I am so tired of brown peaking through off shades of white, and of skies that are not quite blue.

So today I decided... I am celebrating SPRING!

On January 26th I began the SmARTist Telesummit, put together by Ariane Goodwin, Ed.D, one of my former instructors at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. I knew this was going to be good, because a lot of what I do utilizes Ariane's teachings already. But I had NO idea how much I would benefit.

I have to say, we are only 3 official days in, .and I have never been able to implement any kind of change to my thoughts about art & marketing as I have from this amazing group in such a short time!

I am so very excited how these lessons have changed my way of thinking already...can't wait to see what the full course can do. Wheeeee. It's going to be a fun ride!

And We're Off...

Another year, another game plan to try to keep on track. So time to review and revamp:

2011: If I had a game plan...can't find it. I guess I was more worried about Living another year.
1. I got rid of the wheelchair and got back into the studio
2. I rejoined Art On Mountain Gallery, and was juried in for both Acrylic & Sculpture.
3. I created a cohesive body of work that is not only marketable, but is selling.
4. My demo of how to paint a zinnia was featured on ArtInstructionBlog
5. The "Cyd's Kids" were created thanks to my dear friend Carolyn Pearce

2012 Goals:
1. To get in 1-2 more galleries by year's end.
2. To create a minimum of 1 large work a month and 1-2 small ones
3. To continue working on the figurative collection, and begin a new series.
4. To try to pick up some marketing workshops
5. To take some lessons, to both better my paintings, and perhaps...I may relearn how to use brushes so i won't need to rely on paper towels as a painting tool. :)
6. To break even..or perhaps even to make a profit this year.

7. To have fun, keep breathing...and continue to share my joy of being alive with my friends and patrons. Life is too good to miss! ~ Cyd

First Morning is the second half of my dyptic with Waiting.
If you hold them up side by side, the curtains and flooring line up.

My goal was to have Waiting be the pregnant woman waiting for the baby to come, or someone to come get her to take her to the hospital. Because in my mind that is more towards evening, Waiting is a little darker and mistier.

Now, in First Morning, the baby is born and the mother is introducing it to the light for the very first time. I tried to achieve almost an opalescent look to her gown in this one, and a glow to the baby's face as the light from the window hits it.

First Morning is a brief second in a life. A gentle, kind loving moment we get to peek at

Once again, completely out of the blue, I was inspired to create another piece of art based on life and motherhood.

As this lovely lady emerged from the canvas, I not only see her waiting for the little one to make an appearance. But I can also see her standing by the window, perhaps waiting to be taken to the hospital.

My goal was to capture the quiet gentleness of this last silent moment. That final quiet communication before the baby makes it's entrance into the light.
Voila! The finished painting of the mystery girl and the Angel.

This was truly an amazing painting to work on. I learned so very much I didn't know about the use of Acrylics. I got even better at paper towel painting (hehe), and started using a couple of brushes!

A little advice from a few friends definitely helped me on my way. Thank you Jeanne Mackenzie, Lani Vlaanderen, and Lori Disney for your advice, suggestions, and understanding. These three wonderful women helped me regain my confidence and get back on track to finishing the amazing gift of these two figures I had been given.

I know I keep saying it. But I am so very blessed. ~Cyd

It is not uncommon for artist's or their clients to find images in paintings that were never planned. But this is truly one of the oddest and I must say somewhat eeriest of the ones I have seen or heard of.

I really dislike taking the time to draw. Particularly on large pieces. Instead I do a rough negative painting of my work. (Meaning I paint "around" where I think I want my subject.) Currently I use paper towels when doing this, so there really is no detail.

Imagine my total shock, when this little Mystery Girl shows up in one of my negative paintings! Not only does she show up, but she has a very Renaissance sort of look, with belt, puffy sleeves, elaborate collar and curly hair. And she was just too good to ignore.

In order to make the painting work,I had to move the figure that had been planned, over about an inch so the two could be touching, and then I revamped the theme to make the larger figure an angel.

I have no idea who was watching over me and guiding my hand, but I Thank You for being near me that day. The little mystery girl became the inspiration for a lovely painting.

I am thrilled to announce that Dawn took an Award of Merit at her first public debut.

The 2011 TVAL Regional Juried Fine Arts Show was home to approximately 180 fabulous pieces of artwork, for Juror Lani Vlandereen to view!

It was truly a fun way to return to the show scene.

I had a very, very, very, early morning meeting at ye local Starbucks, to discuss the Regional Juried Art Show I was selected to chair.

Did you get yet it was VERY early? I am not even certain I had brushed my hair. I had no makeup on and was in my super almost pajama-comfy painting duds. Not my most professional look.

As we chatted about the show, a couple walked in. The woman came over to our table to talk to my companion. It turned out she was the web developer for two of the galleries and art associations I belonged too. We had spoken numerous times but never met in person.

She told me how much she greatly admired my work, and was overwhelmingly complimentary. With all the art she deals with on a daily basis, besides being an artist herself, it was the ultimate compliment. Her words definitely had me ready to go hit the studio.

When she left to go sit with her husband, I overheard her whisper to him very excitedly..."That is Cyd Rust!!"

I am still grinning.

Dawn no.

Dawn is the first of the women, that I had something of an idea of what I wanted to do before I started.

The idea of a mother holding a baby up to the morning light, just seemed the logical sequence after Blessing. And with this third piece completed, I would now call this a series.

This work was fun, in that it was both harder and easier to create. I had the idea before I started this time, but forfeited the ability to just let the paper lines lead me.

I am really thrilled with how Dawn developed, and hope to do a larger piece from this study.

A True Blessing

Blessing no. D306
Acrylic on
Rice Paper over Stretched Canvas
Sold to a Private Collector

It seems someone is looking over my shoulder and guiding me to a new place in my art.

Once again a painting emerged from one that was intended to go a completely different path. This time when I had applied the rice paper and rotated the canvas, a very obvious maternal figure with glorious hair, was outlined.

Even in the choice of palette, my unknown guide had a mind of their own. The bright colors I had started with, were almost unknowingly muted to a softness much more befitting this gentle lady-in-waiting.

Upon seeing her, a friend immediately suggested the name Blessing. I think that, too, was meant to be. This lovely lady is a Blessing in more ways than one.

NEW: Weekly Painting Give Away

The first show of the year for me, is traditionally the TVAL's Annual Sweet-Art Members Show. It is a nice gentle start to kick the year off.

My original intentions were to do a collage with entwining hearts, in honor of the show being in Loveland over Valentine's Day.

But much to my surprise, a delicate female image appeared in the rice papers I had applied!

I love this painting. Partly because she is what the late Bob Ross used to call, "A Happy Little Accident". And partly because I feel she was, truly a gift to me.

Artist Kay Smith, posted a challenge on WetCanvas to take one of the images she had selected and to do it in a Van Gogh style.

I selected a beautiful image she had of Poppies, and spent the next two hours (There's that time limit.) having way too much fun.

A little ad-libbing, a touch of Vincent, and a brand new Love...A Quiller Transparent Pyrole Red that sent me into Orbit, and has immediately become my favorite acrylic color. It's capability reminds me a lot of Windsor Newton's WC Crimson Lake (I think that is the name.)

The Result being a little 6.5 x 5 Acrylic painting on WC paper, that I am really excited about. While this one will still go in my Not For Sale pile. It has let me revisit Vincent's incredible Irises in my own way, and in doing so has offered me a glimmer of my former style.

Thank you Kay for helping to light my path.

I failed miserably at doing my Painting-a-Day this past week.

I could make excuses and say I had Doctor appointments, Diabetes seminars, went to an Art League meeting, etc. And while all those events were true, it is not what kept me from painting. To say it was, would be a lie to you and to myself.

The honest truth is I just couldn't seem to get motivated.

Instead, I found myself listening to that internal demon that boldly critiques every artist's move. I even found myself questioning if I may have permanently lost some of my knowledge and artistic skill during the high fever and surgery of last August.

Thoughts I refuse to give in to!

I will move onward to week 3 with the Hope that more of my abilities will surface from their slumber.
