Oil-based paints have been the industry standard for years. They produce an aesthetically appealing, glossy, and leveled effect that people enjoy, especially for the interiors of their homes. Problems arise, however, for oil-based paints when they need to be disposed of. Oil-based paints contain high levels of volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

VOCs can cause damage to both a human’s physical health and the health of the environment, as they contribute to issues including ozone formation. For these reasons, the paint world is shifting its focus to water-based paints and continues to work towards products with a reduced impact on the well-being of the world. Although work must be done to bring water-based paints to the level of aesthetic quality displayed by their oil-based counterparts, they are the undeniable future of the paint industry.

Problems arise for folks when they attempt to use water-based paint over pre-existing oil-based paint. This is where we’re happy to help! Unfortunately, you cannot simply go over oil-based paint with a new water-based product as this can result in peeling.

Our advice, if you do have a natural wood door, is to make time every few years to sand and refinish them.

Natural wood is very easily damaged, especially when it gets a lot of sun exposure, so it’s essential to check its integrity regularly to keep it looking its best. We are happy to help you with any maintenance work that may require.

Yes, there seems to be an endless amount of different colored tapes on the market right now.

Some manufacturers may share a color code, however, the difference between tapes lies in the quality of their adhesive and not their actual color.

The problem that we see a lot with the classic blue or beige masking tape is that it does not compare to higher sensitivity tapes made specifically for painting. Masking tape tends to eat through paint faster than painter’s tape and pull color off of your surfaces when it’s removed.

The more you spend on tape, the more sensitive it’s likely to be. The chemicals in cheap tape adhesive are more corrosive than those in higher quality tapes, so if you decide to use it, it’s important to remove it from your painted surface as soon as you possibly can to avoid damage.

When you’re purchasing tape for a painting project, check for its adhesive sensitivity level as opposed to what color it is.

On more delicate interior surfaces, opt for less adhesive tape. On your average interior project, a standard sensitivity adhesive does the trick, just ensure that you’re not leaving tape adhered to your freshly painted surfaces for longer than necessary.

On exterior projects, it’s safe to use stronger adhesives as all of your materials will be exposed to the outdoors.

The answer is “yes”!

They make what are known as low VOC paints, where the VOC  stands for Volatile Organic Compounds.

Low VOC or even no VOC paints are now available and they are really quite good.

One thing to keep in mind is that they don’t quite cover as well so you might need a little bit more paint.

It takes a few more coats to cover so it does get a little more expensive, but it is an option, especially in a situation where it’s in a convalescent home or a hospice situation or a big office and people need to be working there as soon as possible.

Mounting or Tacky Putty for hanging artwork saves your paint job!

Any tape, even those designed for use when painting, will adhere themselves to the paint if left long enough.

This includes the blue and green low-tack tapes that are especially designed for painting, so be careful!

We recommend using sticky putty or tapes that go between the art and the wall and are designed to not stick to paint.
