This is my first painting of the Crested Butte area of Colorado. We visited the area this year and I was really taken with its spectacular beauty. This landscape painting was done from a photo that my son took on a different trip. I cropped the photo and enriched the color before I started painting. This landscape painting is unframed but has painted sides and may be hung without a frame.

This landscape painting was created from a photograph I took on another hike in the mountains of Colorado. The first Rocky Mountain View sold to a person in Vail Colorado. I always make it a point to go on as many hikes as possible while I'm there to take advantage of the wonderful scenery and take a lot of photos for future painting subjects. This landscape painting is framed in a gold plein air style frame.

Steps in Painting "Estes Mountain Lake" - 9 1/2" x 12 7/8" Oil

Reference Photo

Step 1 -

I made the larger hill higher than in my reference photo and steeper to offset the large tree in the right foreground. I also showed less of that tree than the photo so that the shape didn’t over power the rest of the composition.

Step 2 -

I mixed my colors for the major shapes and began to block those shapes in. Starting with the sky and progressing to the big hill shape. I then added the shape of the foreground tree and boulders. Next I worked on the water with the floating vegetation. I then went back into the mountains and began defining them but keeping them light and cool to indicate that they are far away. I added some deep yellow into the closer, smaller hill indicating aspens that have changed into their fall colors.

Step 3 -

I placed a small snow covered mountain between the peaks of the major mountain range. I then added a little more variation in the color below the peaks. Next I started adding lighter sun lit sides to the trees on the hills. After adding the sun lit sides to the trees I went back and darkened the shade side of some of the trees, more heavily where they met the bank of the lake. I added a few more dark areas to the foreground tree on the right. Going back into the hills I added more trees, highlights and shadows. I added a large bolder on the far side of the lake.

Step 4 -

I added some boulders to the closer, smaller hill. Next I started working on the banks, putting some rocks along the edge and indicating some brush. I then began defining the foliage in the water. I added a brighter red color to the near tree and defined the boulders, adding some reeds and weeds. I worked on the water in the foreground near the boulders, adding some reflections.

Step 5 -

I added more detail to the boulders and the vegetation around them. I put more reflections in the water in the foreground and I darkened the water on the far side of the lake. I then signed the painting.

Estes Mountain Lake - Available

The inspiration for this landscape painting was a photograph I took while hiking in Estes Park Colorado. I love how you can see a little bit of a snow covered mountain beyond the major mountain range and I love the colors of this beautiful fall day. This landscape painting is unframed but the sides are painted and it may be hung without a frame.

Steps in Painting Colorado Mountain Stream II - 11" x 14" Oil

Step 1 – I decided to try an approach that I had recently read about. The idea is to under paint the compliments of the actual colors. So that’s what I did as I blocked in the shapes.

Step 2 – I then began to come back over the wet paint with the actual colors trying not to mix them up more than necessary.

Step 3 – I continued adding actual colors over compliments, refining the shapes of the mountains and foothills.

Step 4 – Next, I refined the far away mountains and began to add color to the stream bed, indicating rocks, shadows, and surface reflections. I added some color to the bank of the

stream and I added rocks sticking up out of the shallow water.

Step 5 – I then worked on indicating some tree shapes on the foothills and I added color to the

trees in the mid-ground. I continued developing the stream and added the far away bank.

Step 6 – I added some darker blues to the sky and some lighter values above the tops of the mountains and foothills. I continued developing the trees in the mid-ground, adding tree trunks, more color, and shadows. I put more boulders into the foothills and I added more sky color in the water. I added tree branches and leaves along the foreground.

Step 7 – I added more rocks sticking up out of the water where the stream flows beyond the trees coming from the left. I added reflection into the water where the stream begins to curve and come forward. I added shadows to the rocks along the bank. I added more highlights to the trees and leaves, adjusting values here and there and then signed the piece.

Colorado Mountain Stream II - Available

I love the fall when colors are their most vivid and I love mountains and streams. I painted the original Colorado Mountain Stream in 2009 and I have been wanting to paint another fall mountain stream painting for some time. I went back through my photos and found one which inspired me and now I have completed the second landscape painting in this series. This landscape painting is framed in a gold plein air frame.

October 2011 Newsletter from Daniel Fishback Fine Art

What's Going On?

Several of us artists had a good time on "Show Me Saint Louis" on KSDK TV on October 13, 2011 promoting ArtEast. ArtEast took place last weekend. Those of us at Jacoby had a lot of fun. I sold some prints, greeting cards, and a couple of small oil paintings. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to visit and see my work. I met a lot of nice people there and a number of them signed up for my newsletter.

My Piasa Bird greeting cards are now available at the Artist Shop at Jacoby Arts Center and I will soon have prints there as well.

Today I received word in an email that my painting, "The Flying Wallendas - Oil", was selected as part of the FAV15% (jury's favorite 15% of the entries) in the September 2011 BoldBrush Painting competition." See the FAV15% at http://faso.com/boldbrush/fav15/65.

My work is now on display at the new Grafton Artisan Village through December 23, 2011. What a great place this is for Christmas shopping. Art makes a very enduring gift.

I have recently received word from a gallery in Denver that I have been accepted to do a show there next year. I'll have more information about that in the next newsletter.

"Prime Suspect"

Director Peter Berg reimagined the hit British TV show, starring Maria Bello. Maria Bello stars as tough-as-nails Homicide Detective Jane Timoney, who is determined to fit into a boys' club in NBC's newest drama "Prime Suspect."

The new NBC TV Show "Prime Suspect" staring Maria Bello, premiered Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9PM CT. The show recently purchased prints of three of my Paintings of Ireland – shown below - to use on one of the sets of the show (the set of Maria Bello's father's house). While the dates of the episodes these images will appear on are not known, they told me that they will be shooting from this set several times. So far I have not seen the paintings in the one episode they shot at the father's house.

Landscape Painting - Kenosha to Breckenridge Trail - 30" x 30" Oil

Here is a step-by-step demonstration of the painting "Kenosha to Breckenridge Trail".

Step 1 - To begin with I blocked in the major shapes and colors. The painting is very abstract at this point. Next I wiped out as much paint as possible where the aspens will be painted in.

Step 2 - I painted in the aspen trunks and began to put in a few branches and dark spots on the trees. I also painted in some of the leaf shapes and added some shadows to the trail.

Step 3 - I then added more leaves both at the tree tops and on the ground. I begin to adjust the color on the tree trunks, to put in smaller branches, and more of the dark spots on the trees. I added some fallen branches and some roots going across the trail. I also added the light highlight color above and around the dark places at some points.

Step 4 - I continued to add small branches and more dark spots working up the trees. I add some of the deep yellow leaves and the orange color to the ground. I continue to adjust the color of the tree trunks.

Step 5 - I put in some of the yellow-green leaves in the trees and begin to add detail to the foreground. I paint some of the sky back in to allow more light to come through onto the trail.

Step 6 - I continue working all over the painting, adding leaves and branches, adjusting colors, and finishing up the right foreground. I further define the focal point, which is the end of the trail, by creating more contrast and detail, and by darkening the shadows on the trail leading up to it.

This painting was created from photographs that I took at Circus Flora on this year, 2011. I was one of group of artists that participated for the second time visual artists were invited to go behind the scenes and watch the circus performers rehearse. We were also privileged to visit the back lot and were granted passes to photograph the live performance. This is the fifth of a series of paintings from my photographs and sketches of the circus. This figurative painting is framed in a beautiful Spanish Black custom frame.

What's Going On?

I just returned from a week in Colorado where I visited my son and his wife. I saw and photographed some beautiful landscapes and made inquiries about representation with a number of galleries, from Golden to Denver to Crested Butte. I was encouraged by the response and will be following up with some of them. Stay tuned.

The first episode of "Prime Suspect" was shown last week. My paintings did not appear on that show but should on some of the subsequent episodes. I hope you will watch the show and look for them. See information on Prime Suspect below.

I will be adding some work to the new Grafton Artisan Village beginning October 1st, 2011.

"Prime Suspect"

Director Peter Berg reimagines the hit British TV show, starring Maria Bello. Maria Bello stars as tough-as-nails Homicide Detective Jane Timoney, who is determined to fit into a boys' club in NBC's newest drama "Prime Suspect."

The new NBC TV Show "Prime Suspect" staring Maria Bello, premiered Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9PM CT. The show recently purchased prints of 3 of my Ireland paintings – shown below - to use on one of the sets of the show. While the dates of the episodes these images will appear on are not known, I am told that they will be shooting from this set several times.

ARTEAST was initiated in 1998 by a group of artists as a way to pool their resources and bring attention to the extraordinary artists in the Metro East area of St. Louis. Now in its 13th year, ARTEAST continues as an event designed to showcase the artists who live and work in Madison County, Illinois.

Artists from this region participate by opening their studios to the public or participating in exhibits. Over 150 artists working in a wide range of disciplines including collage, painting, ceramics, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass and digital media show their work and demonstrate their craft.

The venues (where the art is displayed) include buildings with historical or architectural interest, as well as local art galleries and shops.

Organized as a self-guided tour for patrons, ARTEAST provides an opportunity to get a glimpse into the workspace, inspiration and techniques of our resident artists, while exploring the neighborhoods, historic city centers and beautiful countryside.

Artists' Day at Circus Flora
October 29 - December 30, 2011

Presented in the Dion Dion Gallery, this second annual juried exhibit is open to the artists who participated in our 2011 Artists' Day at Circus Flora event on June 18, 2011. Jurors: Ivor David Balding, founder, Circus Flora, and Robin Hirsch, Gallery Director, Art Saint Louis. This year's exhibit features work by 26 St. Louis Regional Artists.

My two newest Circus Flora paintings will be in the show.

I had a good time at the Grafton Art Fair this weekend. It was my first year. I made a little money but the highlight of the fair was these 2 little guys who rode over on their Harley's.

This landscape painting was completed this weekend in Hermann, Missouri at the Artists Along the Missouri plein air painting event. It is available to view and purchase at the Kunstlerhaus Art Gallery and Potter Shop in Hermann, MO. This landscape painting measures 11 x 14 inches and it is framed.

I had some shade for a hour or so but then the sun came on strong and the temperature was around 100 degrees. It was brutal sticking around long enough to finish.

This painting was created from photographs that I took at Circus Flora on this year, 2011. I was one of group of artists that participated for the second time visual artists were invited to go behind the scenes and watch the circus performers rehearse. We were also privileged to visit the back lot and were granted passes to photograph the live performance. This is the forth of a series of paintings from my photographs and sketches of the circus.

Color, contrast, and cropping are close to the original but not exact.
