Pakawaste deliver pressing solution

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has recently delivered and installed a new compaction machine for the recycling of polystyrene at State Works, La Hure Mare depot in Guernsey.

The new machine, a Cut Compact, compacts polystyrene (EPS) at a ratio of about 80:1 facilitating easy shipment of the product and reducing transportation costs.

Pakawaste’s Cut Compact is a briquetting press with an integrated shredding unit specifically designed for the compaction of dry polystyrene (EPS). It produces briquettes with a density of 700kg/m3 that are easy to handle and store.

Previously disposed of in landfill, the acquisition of the Pakawaste Cut Compact will allow businesses and commercial waste contractors to deliver polystyrene directly to States Works for processing having first collected a ticket from one of the States Works waste facility weighbridges. New bins have been provided at Mont Cuet and the Longue Hougue Waste Recycling Facility for the general public, where islanders can drop off their polystyrene packaging.

The briquettes are shipped to a company called Robust Limited who have developed a polystyrene recycling process. Robust buy the compacted material which is then shipped from Guernsey to their facility in Wales. The EPS will be turned into a wood substitute which can be used for a range of applications, including decking, park benches and facia boards.

Robust Limited’s Managing Director, Clive Rodgers said, “The product looks like wood and can be handled the same, but does not rot and therefore does not need treating on an annual basis. The product has a 25 year limited warranty and uniquely, when it has reached the end of its useful life, we can purchase it back to be recycled again. How green is that?”

David Hamer, Pakawaste Managing Director said: “This was just the kind of project the Cut Compact was designed to service and it’s certainly one Pakawaste is proud to be part of. The combined expertise of States Works, Robust and Pakawaste has delivered the ideal recycling solution for polystyrene waste in Guernsey.”

Pakawaste offers the largest range of waste handling equipment in the UK and is constantly pushing the boundaries of research and development enabling it to continually update its extensive portfolio of products to provide clients with the latest cutting edge technology in waste handling solutions.

Pakawaste’s Superlizzy makes a smooth landing

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s premier manufacturer and supplier of waste handling equipment, recently provided a Superlizzy 400PET specification food waste management machine to Bristol International Airport.

The Superlizzy 400PET is specifically designed to process PET bottles and aluminium cans. Equipped with a compacting screw system for continuous compaction the Superlizzy 400PET automatically separates solid waste from the liquid part. The Superlizzy 400PET‘s ability to segregate, compact and separate liquids perfectly matched the airport’s requirements.

As Sam Goldsworthy, Operations Co-ordinator at Bristol International Airport said, “Restrictions on the volume of liquids allowed when travelling from UK airports have resulted in passengers disposing of large quantities of plastic bottles when they reach the security search point. This means more waste for us to deal with, with the liquids contained in the bottles quite literally adding weight to the problem. The Superlizzy enables us to separate out recyclable materials from liquids, saving around one tonne a month from being sent to landfill.”

In addition to the environmental and financial benefits, the Superlizzy 400PET makes it much easier for the waste to be handled and disposed of. Compacted solid waste is collected into a special bag while the liquid is collected into a reservoir and can even be discharged directly into sewers. Both the solid waste bag and the liquid waste reservoir are placed on a special extractable trolley, making it easy to empty and clean.

All of the Superlizzy/Superbag range can be easily placed against a wall whilst the front side should be made accessible for the waste introduction.

How shredding helps your business – the economic, environmental and security benefits

Waste disposal is an important issue for any business whether you operate in an office environment or the industrial arena. With the Government’s commitment to increase landfill tax, businesses need to be looking at the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly and security conscious methods of managing their waste disposal processes.

Shredding offers a number of benefits to recyclers in the local authority, commercial and waste management sectors. Capable of bulk disposal industrial strength shredders can be used to break down waste and minimise it prior to landfill, not only reducing the landfill tax levy but also reducing fuel costs by making payloads to landfill sites more economic. However, where possible cost and environmental issues are best served by segregating the waste into recyclable waste streams. These are shredded to produce a homogenous crude waste material that can be sold through recycling waste brokers or utilised were applicable in other processes such as biomass fuel production. The inclusion of shredding in the waste management process also increases the efficiency of compaction containers or balers.

Paper shredding has the additional benefit of protecting your business intelligence, such as database information, prototype plans, product specifications, financial and confidential documentation. Shredding for security reasons also helps organisations comply with the Data Protection Act of 1998. The act concerns itself with the regulation of the processing of information, this includes the secure disposal of data including employee, client and supplier information. Failure to comply can result in criminal prosecution. Shredded paper can be baled and delivered to paper recycling mills, either by your own waste management systems or through a paper recycling facility.

The key is choosing the correct shredder and other waste handling equipment such as balers or compactors to meet your requirements. Considerations such as waste type are obvious, but you also need to anticipate usage (light, medium or heavy). These and other considerations will determine the specification of the machine required and is best done in consultation with a industry specialist such as Pakawaste, the UK’s number one provider of waste handling equipment.

Pakawaste delivers best value and environmental benefits
to pharmaceutical giant

Pakawaste Ltd, the market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, has recently supplied a Powerkube XL and Powerkrush P85 to AstraZeneca’s Alderley Park site.

AstraZeneca is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies; their business ethos is focused on providing innovative, effective medicines. As a global business they have made a real difference in important areas of healthcare. AstraZeneca not only maintain the highest standards and ethical practise in the research and development of medicines, they are also aware of their responsibility for consistently high standards of behaviour worldwide in all areas of their business including waste management and environmental issues.

In order to facilitate their corporate and environmental policies AstraZeneca recently reviewed the waste management operation at their Alderley Park site. As an existing customer of Pakawaste’s, AstraZeneca were already aware of the quality service Pakawaste provide and asked them to survey the site with the aim of refining the waste handling process to include the ability to recycle.

The project focused on the improvement of AstraZeneca’s general and cardboard waste management. Pakawaste’s Powerkube XL with its heavy duty construction and hydraulic shear unit was identified as the most suitable for the application. The Powerkube XL was installed complete with a hydraulic side loader, the completed bales are quickly tied off and the 500kg mill size bales are ejected ready for collection by the waste stream merchant.

The waste stream handling equipment also includes the Powerkrush 85 complete with hydraulic loader, this extremely powerful machine is used to handle all the general waste generated on this site.

AstraZeneca are extremely satisfied with their new installation, and are benefiting from a massive reduction in landfill, fewer collections and a less labour intensive process. Pakawaste’s solution represented the best long term value to AstraZeneca who have also taken advantage of Pakawaste’s outstanding maintenance and service support.

Pakawaste outperform competition to deliver
waste solution to the John Lewis Group

Pakawaste Ltd, market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, has recently supplied a CutCompact EPS Briquetting machine to the John Lewis Group Distribution Warehouse in Gosforth.

As an existing customer of Pakawaste’s, The John Lewis Group where already aware of the waste management products and high levels of customer service that Pakawaste deliver. However, in order to ensure they got the best return on their investment the John Lewis Group trialled several machines before selecting the CutCompact. The CutCompact outperformed the competition with the most efficient operation and best performance of all the tested machines.

The CutCompact is a briquetting press with integrated shredding unit for compaction of dry EPS (polystyrene). The John Lewis Group are now able to quickly and efficiently reduce 18 roll cages of EPS (polystyrene) down to just one brick of EPS.

Previous machines would only produce 300/400kg bricks but the CutCompact is capable of producing a 600/700kg brick.

John Lewis are extremely satisfied with their new installation, the increased payload means fewer collections, lower costs and a more environmentally friendly solution.

Lee Abbott from Pakawaste commented, “We are delighted to have retained John Lewis’s custom. Our competitors’ equipment failed to perform to the level of the CutCompact. The operators at John Lewis even went as far as to say it was the best machine they have ever seen, with a relatively low footprint it is the perfect choice for any business that needs to dispose of EPS (polystyrene).”

Pakawaste’s 6000th machine delivers increased aluminium scrap revenue

Pakawaste Ltd, the market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, has recently supplied its 6000th machine to Roydon Recycling, in Rochdale.

Roydon Recycling specialises in the management of outsourced waste streams and has over 20 years experience optimising the value their customers receive from waste. Working in partnership with customers to create mutually beneficial solutions that meet the pressures of changing waste legislation and demands upon operational efficiency, it is essential that Roydon’s waste management equipment is reliable, cost-effective and well maintained.

One of Roydon Recycling’s key accounts is with the largest supplier of own label beverages in the world, presently operating in the UK from three manufacturing plants. Roydon process the reject aluminium cans which are filled with beverages. Historically this had been done using a Revolution T2 screw compactor, however this had been becoming increasingly unreliable and wasn’t able to bale the product.

Keen to build on the high level of service Roydon Recycling called in the waste management equipment specialists, Pakawaste. Once Pakawaste had evaluated the site and Roydon Recycling’s requirements they were able to recommend the Extractpak with hydraulic tippler for loading.

The complete system is now automated, with automatic rather than manual loading. The tippler is designed to be loaded by fork lift truck, which means no double handling. The ‘one button’ operation not only pierces and empties the cans, but also bales the aluminium ready for recycling. All liquids are separated before baling for disposal down the drain.

The new system has stopped the cross contamination which previously occurred when aluminium went into an open skip with other products. This has increased the recycling value considerably.

Roydon Recycling is extremely satisfied with their Extractpak installation, and are benefiting from a less labour intensive process. The baled aluminium is now easier to manage, more economical to transport and has a higher value.

Geoff Rand, Pakawaste Product Development Manager commented, “This is a bit of a landmark for Pakawaste being our 6000th commissioned machine.” He continued, “We are also very proud to be first the choice for companies like Roydon Recycling who are reliant on our expertise and high quality machinery to service their customers”.

Pakawaste launch Superlizzy in UK

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, launched the Superlizzy screw compactor at the RWM in September 2007.

Superlizzy’s sophisticated design is the first of its kind in the UK. Specifically engineered to deliver a simple, effective and hygienic solution for food waste disposal to the catering industry, the Superlizzy utilises a compacting screw system for continuous compaction.

The automated system separates solid waste from the liquid part. Compacted solid waste is collected into a special bag while the liquid is collected into a reservoir or discharged directly into the sewers. Both the solid waste bag and the liquid waste reservoir are placed on an extractable trolley for ease of access. The machines are also equipped with an automatic system for cleanliness and sanitation thanks to an integral sanitising system.

“Today’s catering managers are looking for compact, efficient food waste disposal appliances which deliver consistent performance and require little input from their staff. The Superlizzy delivers this and much more,” said David Hamer, managing director of Pakawaste. “The Superlizzy is an automated waste compacting machine; it separates solid waste from liquid allowing for effective disposal with a minimal footprint.”

David also explained the wider appeal of the Superlizzy as a flexible solution for food waste disposal. “The Superlizzy offers high-end design features and technological superiority for food waste disposal to fast food outlets, cafeterias, leisure facilities and airports across the UK. It can be incorporated into a work place with minimal effort, requiring only rudimentary training and is suitable for any setting.”

Pakawaste make a smooth landing at Manchester Airport

Pakawaste limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has recently landed the maintenance and service contract for Manchester Airports waste compactors.

As part of a comprehensive product and service portfolio, Pakawaste offer a range of flexible maintenance and service agreements, newly structured to include 24 hour national breakdown. The agreements are tailored to meet the customer’s specific requirements. Manchester Airport has 20 compactors for general waste and cardboard, these are situated at a number of sites around the airport. They also have the added problem of security to address within certain compounds.

The Pakawaste solution involves a full multi-site maintenance and service agreement, with compactors in particularly sensitive areas being moved to other sites prior to scheduled maintenance.

The 20 compactors serve all three passenger terminals and the world freight terminal and represent a significant investment in effective waste management. The compactors are fundamental to the airports professional approach to waste management and recycling issues, and therefore it is essential that they are regularly maintained and that any downtime is minimal.

The maintenance and service contract will enable swift, cost effective and secure handling of all regular maintenance and repair services for all the airports waste management equipment.

Pakawaste’s unrivalled expertise and reputation for reliability within the waste management industry was a major factor in landing the contract. Amongst Pakawaste’s 85 employees are a 30 strong team of dedicated service engineers that offer a first class service across the UK regardless of equipment brand, this third party service is becoming increasingly popular with customers like Manchester Airport that understand the devastating effect equipment failure can have on a businesses waste management processes.

David Hamer, Pakawaste sales and marketing director said: “An organisation like Manchester Airport cannot afford to have valuable resources for waste management like their compactors sitting idle. Manchester had a total of 21.89 million passengers up to September 2007 that number of people generates a colossal amount of waste and the airport management are dedicated to recycling as much of this as possible. We are particularly proud to be working with the airport and look forward to ensuring all their equipment is working at its optimum.”

Pakawaste lands major Terminal 5 recycling contract

Pakawaste limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has just confirmed the prestigious contract to supply an integrated waste handling system for Heathrow Airport Terminal 5.

As part of the design and construction of Terminal 5, BAA had to carefully consider the environmental impact as well as the logistical implications of dealing with the vast amount of waste that would be created by the estimated 30 million passengers passing through over 20,000m of retail space occupied by some 144 stores and restaurants. To give an indication of the size of the site, the new terminal building will have stands for 60 aircraft and will be 400 meters long.

With the huge scale of the project and the heightened security issues now affecting airports across the world, a whole new approach needed to be designed specifically for Terminal 5 that would enable swift, cost effective and secure handling and storage of waste prior to recycling.

With many complex issues to consider, BAA selected Pakawaste to design and supply a range of specialist large scale compactors and ancillary equipment based on Pakawaste’s unrivalled expertise and reputation in the industry for managing and installing large scale projects on time and within budget. BAA also took into consideration the company’s excellent reputation for providing a high level of after sales technical and service support.

As part of their strategy, BAA identified the benefits of sorting and recycling as much waste material as possible on site and this was “key” in the development of the chosen waste solution. To assist the operatives achieve recycling goals, 12 Pakawaste Powerkrush waste 85 compactors complete with hydraulic wheely bin loaders will be installed with 6 machines to be sited at each end of the building. The 6 machines are then divided into 3 for airside and 3 for landside disposal purposes.

To further assist with recycling targets, the 3 machines in each area are painted different colours for different waste streams, Grey coloured compactors for Non Recyclable waste. Green coloured compactors for recyclable waste & Brown coloured compactors for cardboard only. Different coloured wheely bins matching the compactors will also be located throughout the terminal to encourage operatives to segregate the waste at source.

Additional compactors will also be installed at satellite buildings with T5B (the satellite building) having 1 Powerkrush 85 compactor for cardboard, the NAA (aircraft waste collect point) having 2 Powerkrush 85 compactors, 1 Green for recyclable waste and 1 Brown for cardboard only and finally the SAA (aircraft waste collect point) having 2 Powerkrush 85 compactors, 1 Green for recyclable waste and 1 Brown, again for cardboard only.

Commenting on the completion of this major contract, group operations director Malcolm Moon said: “The timescales on this project were very tight, but BAA have the same “can do” attitude as we have which proved very important in getting the equipment in place on a very busy construction project.”

Celebrating 30 years in business this year, Pakawaste has achieved its status as a market leader in the production, supply and maintenance of waste handling equipment including vertical & horizontal balers, static , portable & specialist compactors, shredders and bin equipment.

Pakawaste offers the largest range of waste handling equipment in the UK and is constantly pushing the boundaries of research and development enabling it to continually update its extensive portfolio of products to provide clients with the latest cutting edge technology in waste handling solutions.

Pakawaste shred the cost of British Energy’s waste management

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has just successfully completed a very complex and specialist shredder installation at British Energy’s nuclear power station.

As part of British Energy’s drive to cut waste management costs and lower their carbon footprint, British Energy enlisted the help of waste management specialists Pakawaste. Pakawaste proposed a solution which would ultimately reduce waste management costs, minimise handling/ transport requirements and slash landfill charges.

British Energy’s problem was the disposal of fitters’, masks, suits and boots. Previously they had been placed in 205 litre steel drums, one set of fitter’s equipment to a drum, sealed and disposed of in a specialist landfill site, at a cost of £1000 per drum.

One unusual difficulty was installing the BE specification shredder system into a small second floor room, which meant all the component parts had to be manhandled into position. The system comprises of a stainless steel loading cill and enclosed hopper which prevents flying debris, the shredder itself reduces the waste before it is transported to the drum via an enclosed screw conveyor, finally the waste is compressed in the drum using a vertical compactor on a drum trolley, the entire system is interlocked, sequenced and fitted with interior lighting.

Commenting on the completion of the installation, British Energy’s Ben Rees commented: “Pakawaste identified the solution to this particular waste problem immediately and clearly demonstrated the benefits to us. Previously we could only fit one set of fitter’s equipment in each drum, with the new system it’s as many as four. That’s a considerable saving to British Energy reducing landfill costs by 75% as well as limiting waste handling and transport to a minimum. We are delighted”
David Hamer, Pakawaste sales and marketing director said: “Waste treatment legislation is changing, from 30th October 2007 it will be a legal requirement to treat waste before it can be landfilled, British Energy’s savings are considerable and the new system keeps them compliant with the new legislation. Whatever your waste requirements the aim should always be to maximise and optimise your waste operations. The rewards for doing this are both economical and environmental.”

Celebrating 30 years in business this year, Pakawaste has achieved its status as a market leader in the production, supply and maintenance of waste handling equipment including vertical & horizontal balers, static , portable & specialist compactors, shredders and bin equipment.

Pakawaste’s two in one solution for
North West Leicestershire District Council

Pakawaste limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has recently provided a Powerkube XL to North West Leicestershire District Council in order to facilitate their requirement for a dual material waste management system.

North West Leicestershire District Council previously had to transport waste to other sites for disposal but required a system that would allow them to reduce plastic and cardboard waste in preparation for recycle.

After a free site survey and comprehensive discussion Pakawaste were able to recommend the installation of a Powerkube XL ‘mill sized’ horizontal baler. The Powerkube XL reduces waste in volume by up to 90%. The waste is pressed into mill sized bales measuring 1143 x 1490 x 762mm and weighing approximately 500kg. The machine has a potential throughput of up to 2000kg per hour, applying 30 tonnes of pressure, making it suitable for a number of different materials, including cardboard, shredded paper, shrink films, etc.

An additional feature of this installation was the fitting of a special sliding hopper and bottle piercer, this allows the operator to switch usage from plastic bottles to cardboard at the press of a button, the Powerkube XL can be hand fed or loaded with a large digger.

In addition to the environmental advantages of baling, there are significant financial advantages, including excellent return on investment due to the extra revenue generated from the sale of the bales of cardboard.

Pakawaste gives Hammonds a Helping Hand

Pakawaste Ltd, the market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, have again helped Hammond’s Furniture who are an existing customer with their Waste Recycling needs.

Hammond’s had large amounts of wood and plastic waste, which was being disposed of in 35yd open skips. Pakawaste have put in place a Rotokrush to reduce the wood waste therefore reducing the number of skips emptied from 43 a month down to 25, which has a massive saving on haulage costs.

The ROTOKRUSH compaction system is a unique product which provides the customer with the flexibility to load up to 50 cubic yard containers with bulky materials such as packing cases, pallets, wood, glass fibre and other industrial/difficult medium density waste materials whilst achieving compaction ratios on average of 4:1. The STATIC ROTOKRUSH is fixed to a firm concrete base with single containers being placed in front of the machine for continuous compaction. Compacting into open containers allows fast, easy loading by forklift truck or loading shovel making this an ideal machine for high throughput sites.

With regards to the Plastic waste a Powerkube XL is now being used which allows Hammond’s to receive revenue for the mill size bales now being produced.

The POWERKUBE XL baler is the largest standard baler in the range, with an overall length of 6535mm and a feed opening 1500mm long x 1440mm wide. It also produces mill sized bales, but its extended loading aperture allows large items of waste and bulky cardboard boxes to be baled effectively giving up to 2000kg per hour throughput. One of a range of materials handling options such as bin tippers or conveyors can be fitted to facilitate easy loading of the waste. Once the bale is made, the user is alerted by a ‘full bale’ light and tying the bale only takes a few minutes. The completed bale can then be taken away by a waste processor, often in exchange for revenue.

Culinary Capers at RHM Culinary Brands Manchester Division

Pakawaste Ltd has supplied various machines to RHM Culinary Brands over the years and was contacted by the Manchester Division for a free waste audit.

RHM Culinary Brands are suppliers of food sauces to the leading retailers so as the demand for their products grew, so did their volume of metal drums on site meaning they required a machine to deal with them. Pakawaste recommended a Drumkrush which benefits are Volume Reduction making it more cost effective, easier to load vehicles and safer to transport on the highway.

The DRUMKRUSH is designed to reduce volume of all types of steel and aluminium drums up to 45 gallon capacity. The machine robustly constructed and all sides are enclosed to meet health and safety standards. The compaction head, which runs on heavy roller guides, is fitted with strategically spikes which, when the machine is activated, puncture the drum to allow all excess air expelled safely during the crushing cycle. Compaction head exerts in excess of 18 of force on to the drum, which reduces volume by an impressive 7:1, thus maximising savings on scrap transportation. Residue are automatically drained into the stainless steel catchment tray which can be emptied manually or through a pumping system.

RHM have fitted a weatherproof canopy to protect the Drumkrush and the operator from the elements.
