Pakawaste Team Race the Sun

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment recently supported Roy Potter and Richard Harding, members of the Pakawaste design team, in their successful attempt to ‘Race the Sun’.

Roy and Richard completed the challenging Lakeland triathlon style event with friends and fellow adventure seekers Mike and Dave on Saturday 3rd September 2011, raising money for Action Medical Research, a charity dedicated to helping improve the lives of babies and children in the UK.

This exciting event for teams of four is held annually in the magnificent setting of the Lake District. It's a cycle, climb, canoe challenge that is now in its 9th year. Teams start the challenge at sunrise and attempt to finish by sunset - racing the sun! They cycle a total of approximately 50 miles (80kms), hike to the summit of England’s second highest mountain - Helvellyn at 3,116ft (950m) and canoe a 2.5 mile (4kms) course on Thirlmere, completing the course in the fastest time possible between sunrise and sunset.

The ‘Crash Test Dummies Team’ (Roy, Richard, Mike and Dave) prepared for the event with weekend mountain bike rides around Rivington Pike, Darwin Tower and Beacon Fell. They focused on a lot of cross training most other days for the last 3 months before the event, which included running, cycling, swimming, football, squash and fell walking. Whatever the magic formula, the training certainly paid off with the four man team managing a remarkable 10th position out of 74 teams, despite all participants being hampered by inclement weather.

Roy Potter of Pakawaste commented, “We have a great team spirit and were determined to raise as much as we could for Action Medical Research. We have had great support from colleagues at Pakawaste, friends and family both with sponsorship and during the months of preparation”.

Richard Harding added, “We really had fun with this and kept fit as well but the charity work and finding initiatives to support is very important to us. Knowing you’re raising money for a good cause is a real motivator. Who knows what’s next?”

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing - they faced none stop rain from start to finish with gusting winds of up to 50mph on Helvellyn. Mike and Dave fell out of their canoe whilst attempting a turn at the halfway point on the Thirlmere canoe course and Roy went ‘off piste’ on a bridleway when his brakes failed due to mud on the rims and ended up in the undergrowth.

Thankfully no-one was seriously injured and the team are delighted to have raised approximately £2000 to date, but it’s not over yet. If you would like to help the ‘Crash Test Dummies Team’ fundraising activities for the Action Medical Research you can still make donations at http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/crashtestdummies.

The event has proved extremely beneficial for Pakawaste in previous years with many of the exhibition visitors expressing a keen interest in Pakawaste’s services and their ability to provide cost-effective and flexible solutions to waste management problems. In addition to displaying popular ranges and new equipment every year, Pakawaste give free advice on a wide range of waste management issues and offer no obligation, free site surveys.

David Hamer, Group Managing Director said “The RWM is the number one exhibition in the waste and recycling industry calendar and has always been a great event for Pakawaste to meet up with new and existing customers. It is an excellent platform to display our latest products and services. The Pakawaste team will be there in force again this year to welcome customers and visitors offering advice on all matters concerning waste management equipment and municipal vehicles. We are looking forward to meeting and greeting many visitors to stand 800, see you there.”

Pakawaste designs and installs turnkey machines for a waste oil processing firm

Pakawaste Ltd based in Lancashire, UK designed, installed and commissioned a waste fragmentation plant valued at around 250k, for one of the market leaders in the waste oil processing industry, OSS Ltd who now process around 60% of the used filters nationally.

OSS Ltd is in the Waste Oil processing industry and they were processing around 2.5T of used oil filters every hour. They were looking for a shredder supplier in the area and were sold on Pakawaste’s ability to design and manufacture turnkey systems. This plant has been able to segregate the various waste streams, utilising a shredder, tippler, conveyors and overband magnet system.

“This is a great example of how Pakawaste can create a bespoke waste segregation stream” said David Hamer, Managing Director for Pakawaste Ltd.“ OSS Ltd has expressed that they are really pleased, they now have their very own purpose built waste fragmentation plant. Its on of only a very few in the country that is licensed to received and handle hazardous waste”.

They were looking for ways to separate oil, steel and contaminated filter elements within an overall recycling system. Everything was specifically designed for their site located at Knowsley, Merseyside. The system had to process full loads of 240L wheelie bins filled with filters at one end and send the three separated waste streams out at the other. Pakawaste installed the shredder, tippler, conveyors and overband magnet, they now have 3 waste streams. The oil is used as a feed stock for their legally compliant reprocessed fuel oil, NexGen.

The various solid wastes are cleaned, packaged and sold to various processors. As this material has been cleaned and processed, it will cease to be classified as hazardous waste, making it easier to transport and re-use. The steel is sold to a metal recycling contractor and the card is baled into fuel logs.

Pakawaste Ltd also designed and purpose built a bin washer, which now services all the OSS bins.

Pakawaste/Nightfreight Working Together To Improve The Environment

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has recently delivered and installed new equipment to Nightfreight (GB) Ltd Depots. The 1st phase roll out has now been completed and equipment throughout the network, consisting of five Static Rotokrush, four MX600, four VB56, one P1000, two P2000, one P50, two P75 and one P85.

Pakawaste’s UK Product Manager, Andy Mall was asked on site to conduct a review and site survey. This resulted in Pakawaste recommending the installation of various pieces of waste handling equipment. "Nightfreight (GB) Ltd are extremely satisfied with their new installations, the increased payloads and segregation of waste for recycling means fewer collections which all equates to less waste being sent to landfill" said Andy Mall, UK Product Manager for Pakawaste Ltd.

David Downes from Nightfreight (GB) Ltd said "We have now finalised phase 1 of the install of equipment to 16 of our depots, the improvement and impact this has made on our depots and personnel are above what was expected. With the tireless help and support of Andy Mall since the recycling program was first discussed back in 2008 when he first started to carry out surveys of the depots through to now, shows the total commitment and professionalism of Pakawaste”. He then continued “From the confirmation of the order to the delivery, installation and training, confirm that Pakawaste was the correct choice for Nightfreight. The installation was dealt with ease on all occasions by Pakawaste Engineers who where on site ready to receive and supervise the delivery ensuring the equipment was fitted in the correct position and to the highest standard, a further credit to the Pakawaste team. With the advise and understanding of the business from David Hamer (MD) and Andy Mall, the change from FEL's and REL's has made Nightfreight sharper, smarter and more compliant to segregation and recycling, whilst being more cost effective in these difficult times".

"The on-site training was well presented and has enabled my staff to engage in their responsibilities effectively and efficiently. The transition from emptying all of our waste into a general skip to segregation and recycling was seamless and immediate” Said Grahame Hodkinson – Nightfreight - Hoddesdon Depot Manager“. The cost effectiveness of the two machines has been demonstrated by the number of times that the Portakrush 1000 has needed to be emptied, in comparison to the old skip. Since the installation of these machines, the Portakrush 1000 has had to be emptied once and we have managed to recycle 4 pallet loads of cardboard and 2 pallet loads of plastic. Our old skip would, at the minimum, be emptied once a week. It has been some 12 weeks since the installation, so you can see that the math’s are greatly in our favour. I would wish to thank Pakawaste for the ease of the installation and its minimal impact to the operational procedures in place at the depots and a big thank you again to the Pakawaste team".

Dave Hamer, Pakawaste Managing Director said, “Pakawaste are extremely pleased with the partnership we now have with Nighfreight and have shown total commitment and professionalism with the implementation of Pakawaste equipment. We look forward to the continued support from Nightfreight and to a long and mutually beneficial business relationship”.

Nightfreight’s Central Hub in the West Midlands had 6 FEL's to collect and store general waste from, in and around the site. The waste consisted of wood (Pallets), shrink-wrap, cardboard and black bag waste from offices and shop floors. The FEL's were being emptied seven days a week.

Pakawaste introduced the waste handling equipment to help maximise their recycling potential. The general waste gets compacted resulting in maximised payloads and less frequent collections, wood waste is now segregated for recycling in 40 cubic yard open containers. The cardboard, shrink-wrap and polythene is baled into mill size bales and sold to recycling processors for an excellent rate.

By implementing recycling and segregation via Pakawaste equipment Nightfreight, are achieving significant savings in their waste disposal costs at the Central Hub.

Pakawaste offers the largest range of waste handling equipment in the UK and is constantly pushing the boundaries of research and development enabling it to continually update its extensive portfolio of products to provide clients with the latest cutting edge technology in waste handling solutions.

Pakawaste deliver pressing solution

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of waste handling equipment, has recently delivered and installed a new compaction machine for the recycling of polystyrene at State Works, La Hure Mare depot in Guernsey.

The new machine, a Cut Compact, compacts polystyrene (EPS) at a ratio of about 80:1 facilitating easy shipment of the product and reducing transportation costs.

Pakawaste’s Cut Compact is a briquetting press with an integrated shredding unit specifically designed for the compaction of dry polystyrene (EPS). It produces briquettes with a density of 700kg/m3 that are easy to handle and store.

Previously disposed of in landfill, the acquisition of the Pakawaste Cut Compact will allow businesses and commercial waste contractors to deliver polystyrene directly to States Works for processing having first collected a ticket from one of the States Works waste facility weighbridges. New bins have been provided at Mont Cuet and the Longue Hougue Waste Recycling Facility for the general public, where islanders can drop off their polystyrene packaging.

The briquettes are shipped to a company called Robust Limited who have developed a polystyrene recycling process. Robust buy the compacted material which is then shipped from Guernsey to their facility in Wales. The EPS will be turned into a wood substitute which can be used for a range of applications, including decking, park benches and facia boards.

Robust Limited’s Managing Director, Clive Rodgers said, “The product looks like wood and can be handled the same, but does not rot and therefore does not need treating on an annual basis. The product has a 25 year limited warranty and uniquely, when it has reached the end of its useful life, we can purchase it back to be recycled again. How green is that?”

David Hamer, Pakawaste Managing Director said: “This was just the kind of project the Cut Compact was designed to service and it’s certainly one Pakawaste is proud to be part of. The combined expertise of States Works, Robust and Pakawaste has delivered the ideal recycling solution for polystyrene waste in Guernsey.”

Pakawaste offers the largest range of waste handling equipment in the UK and is constantly pushing the boundaries of research and development enabling it to continually update its extensive portfolio of products to provide clients with the latest cutting edge technology in waste handling solutions.

Pakawaste’s Superlizzy makes a smooth landing

Pakawaste Limited, the UK’s premier manufacturer and supplier of waste handling equipment, recently provided a Superlizzy 400PET specification food waste management machine to Bristol International Airport.

The Superlizzy 400PET is specifically designed to process PET bottles and aluminium cans. Equipped with a compacting screw system for continuous compaction the Superlizzy 400PET automatically separates solid waste from the liquid part. The Superlizzy 400PET‘s ability to segregate, compact and separate liquids perfectly matched the airport’s requirements.

As Sam Goldsworthy, Operations Co-ordinator at Bristol International Airport said, “Restrictions on the volume of liquids allowed when travelling from UK airports have resulted in passengers disposing of large quantities of plastic bottles when they reach the security search point. This means more waste for us to deal with, with the liquids contained in the bottles quite literally adding weight to the problem. The Superlizzy enables us to separate out recyclable materials from liquids, saving around one tonne a month from being sent to landfill.”

In addition to the environmental and financial benefits, the Superlizzy 400PET makes it much easier for the waste to be handled and disposed of. Compacted solid waste is collected into a special bag while the liquid is collected into a reservoir and can even be discharged directly into sewers. Both the solid waste bag and the liquid waste reservoir are placed on a special extractable trolley, making it easy to empty and clean.

All of the Superlizzy/Superbag range can be easily placed against a wall whilst the front side should be made accessible for the waste introduction.

How shredding helps your business – the economic, environmental and security benefits

Waste disposal is an important issue for any business whether you operate in an office environment or the industrial arena. With the Government’s commitment to increase landfill tax, businesses need to be looking at the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly and security conscious methods of managing their waste disposal processes.

Shredding offers a number of benefits to recyclers in the local authority, commercial and waste management sectors. Capable of bulk disposal industrial strength shredders can be used to break down waste and minimise it prior to landfill, not only reducing the landfill tax levy but also reducing fuel costs by making payloads to landfill sites more economic. However, where possible cost and environmental issues are best served by segregating the waste into recyclable waste streams. These are shredded to produce a homogenous crude waste material that can be sold through recycling waste brokers or utilised were applicable in other processes such as biomass fuel production. The inclusion of shredding in the waste management process also increases the efficiency of compaction containers or balers.

Paper shredding has the additional benefit of protecting your business intelligence, such as database information, prototype plans, product specifications, financial and confidential documentation. Shredding for security reasons also helps organisations comply with the Data Protection Act of 1998. The act concerns itself with the regulation of the processing of information, this includes the secure disposal of data including employee, client and supplier information. Failure to comply can result in criminal prosecution. Shredded paper can be baled and delivered to paper recycling mills, either by your own waste management systems or through a paper recycling facility.

The key is choosing the correct shredder and other waste handling equipment such as balers or compactors to meet your requirements. Considerations such as waste type are obvious, but you also need to anticipate usage (light, medium or heavy). These and other considerations will determine the specification of the machine required and is best done in consultation with a industry specialist such as Pakawaste, the UK’s number one provider of waste handling equipment.

Pakawaste delivers best value and environmental benefits
to pharmaceutical giant

Pakawaste Ltd, the market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, has recently supplied a Powerkube XL and Powerkrush P85 to AstraZeneca’s Alderley Park site.

AstraZeneca is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies; their business ethos is focused on providing innovative, effective medicines. As a global business they have made a real difference in important areas of healthcare. AstraZeneca not only maintain the highest standards and ethical practise in the research and development of medicines, they are also aware of their responsibility for consistently high standards of behaviour worldwide in all areas of their business including waste management and environmental issues.

In order to facilitate their corporate and environmental policies AstraZeneca recently reviewed the waste management operation at their Alderley Park site. As an existing customer of Pakawaste’s, AstraZeneca were already aware of the quality service Pakawaste provide and asked them to survey the site with the aim of refining the waste handling process to include the ability to recycle.

The project focused on the improvement of AstraZeneca’s general and cardboard waste management. Pakawaste’s Powerkube XL with its heavy duty construction and hydraulic shear unit was identified as the most suitable for the application. The Powerkube XL was installed complete with a hydraulic side loader, the completed bales are quickly tied off and the 500kg mill size bales are ejected ready for collection by the waste stream merchant.

The waste stream handling equipment also includes the Powerkrush 85 complete with hydraulic loader, this extremely powerful machine is used to handle all the general waste generated on this site.

AstraZeneca are extremely satisfied with their new installation, and are benefiting from a massive reduction in landfill, fewer collections and a less labour intensive process. Pakawaste’s solution represented the best long term value to AstraZeneca who have also taken advantage of Pakawaste’s outstanding maintenance and service support.

Pakawaste outperform competition to deliver
waste solution to the John Lewis Group

Pakawaste Ltd, market leader in the field of waste handling equipment, has recently supplied a CutCompact EPS Briquetting machine to the John Lewis Group Distribution Warehouse in Gosforth.

As an existing customer of Pakawaste’s, The John Lewis Group where already aware of the waste management products and high levels of customer service that Pakawaste deliver. However, in order to ensure they got the best return on their investment the John Lewis Group trialled several machines before selecting the CutCompact. The CutCompact outperformed the competition with the most efficient operation and best performance of all the tested machines.

The CutCompact is a briquetting press with integrated shredding unit for compaction of dry EPS (polystyrene). The John Lewis Group are now able to quickly and efficiently reduce 18 roll cages of EPS (polystyrene) down to just one brick of EPS.

Previous machines would only produce 300/400kg bricks but the CutCompact is capable of producing a 600/700kg brick.

John Lewis are extremely satisfied with their new installation, the increased payload means fewer collections, lower costs and a more environmentally friendly solution.

Lee Abbott from Pakawaste commented, “We are delighted to have retained John Lewis’s custom. Our competitors’ equipment failed to perform to the level of the CutCompact. The operators at John Lewis even went as far as to say it was the best machine they have ever seen, with a relatively low footprint it is the perfect choice for any business that needs to dispose of EPS (polystyrene).”
