اشفاق احمد ان نامور ادیبوں میں شامل ہیں جو قیام پاکستان کے فورا بعد ادبی افق پر نمایاں ہوئے اور انیس سو ترپن میں ان کا افسانہ گڈریا ان کی شہرت کا باعث بنا۔ انہوں نے اردو میں پنجابی الفاظ کا تخلیقی طور پر استعمال کیا اور ایک خوبصورت شگفتہ نثر ایجاد کی جو ان ہی کا وصف سمجھی جاتی ہے۔ اردو ادب میں کہانی لکھنے کے فن پر اشفاق احمد کو جتنا عبور تھا وہ کم لوگوں کے حصہ میں آیا۔

کچھ عرصہ سے وہ پاکستان ٹیلی وژن پر زاویے کے نام سے ایک پروگرام کرتے رہے جس میں وہ اپنے مخصوص انداز میں قصے اور کہانیاں سناتے تھے۔

I am not a sexist by any means and the people on and off facebook who know me, know it well but I have always tried to uphold, talk and stress upon the values that are fading fast in the face of consumerism a.k.a capitalism. At times, I’ve been labelled as ‘consevative’ and ‘old-school’ but that was all they could tell me in reply. Our society today is in a constant state of flux in the name of modernization, its causing social disorders which in turn not only threatening the family and home but also the institution of marriage.

The following fantastic article by Khalid Baig is not an objet d’art but it has quite literally spoken my heart out. I do feel there’s a need to address this issue in the right way so that instead of being taken as a bastion of male chauvinism, it actually reflects its purpose. Before sharing the article I would like to share a few thoughts I once read somewhere by well-respected, Bano Qudsia. Here is what she said:

“Rather critical of the deviation of today’s woman from her natural role of mother and home keeper, Bano decries what she terms ‘a woman’s unsolicited and disoriented escape from responsibility.’ Interestingly, though, she blames men for plotting a conspiracy to push women out of the house, her only domain. “And women fall easy prey to this trap. Men of the post-industrialization era gave women a taste of luxurious lifestyles and then instigated them to step out of the house and earn that lifestyle. The woman developed a taste for what she thought was freedom for her, but which actually bonded her as a labourer and a breadwinner.”

She cites the example of the woman who does the dishes in her home. “This woman is more liberated than your modern women, since she does not suffer from any conflicts of the ’self’. Poverty is all that hurts her and she is not caught in a rat race to prove something to herself or carve out an identity for herself. Her existence is identity enough.” Bano also feels that what she calls women’s ’strength of softness’ has been lost in their struggle to prove themselves equal to men. What women take as their weaknesses are in fact their strengths, she believes.”

Motherhood - an article by Khalid Baig

In April [few years ago now] President Clinton gathered an army of former presidents, state governors, city mayors and hundreds of prominent people from all 50 states to address one of the most pressing problems facing America today. He brought former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, to lead this army. Their task: Solve the problem of 15 million young Americans who are considered at-risk youth. “They are at risk of growing up unskilled, unlearned, or, even worse, unloved,” said Powell, who was appointed chairman of President’s Summit for America’s Future. The problem has “the potential to explode our society,” he warned.

He was not exaggerating. 15 million in a total population of about 60 million youth is a huge number. Mostly they come from dysfunctional families and fall victims to the “pathologies and poisons of the street.” Every year 3.4 million of them try drugs. Half a million attempt suicide. A lot of them will drop out of high school and will be functionally illiterate in a country with free universal education. Their sexual mores differ little from those of breeding horses (70% have done it before the age of 17). Recently a prominent lawyer and writer, Alan Dershowitz, suggested reducing the age of consent to 15. (Marriage at that age will, of course, remain illegal). Violent crimes committed by these youngsters have become such a problem that in May the Congress passed the Juvenile Crime bill that allows people as young as 13 to be treated as adults in the criminal justice system.

What is Powell’s solution for this daunting problem? He will find mentors — adult volunteers who will take care of these children. But what happened to their own parents? They were not killed in a war, or by a plague, or some other natural disaster. Their problem is self-inflicted. Mothers left the home to “realize their full potential” on the factory floor, in the show room, or in the office. A society that belittled the task of home-making lost the home-makers. With the free mixing of men and women in the work place, one thing led to another. The home was destroyed from both ends.

Life is fun. Home-making is dull. Children are a burden. Now 15 million of them are a burden on the society. It remains to be seen how a society, whose members could not take care of their own children, will make them take care of other’s children. But the elite team of American leaders could not bring itself to admitting that the root of the problem has been in the forcing of the women out of the home.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was a little more candid. In his 1987 book Perestroika, he mentions the “paradoxical result of our sincere and politically justified desire to make women equal with men in everything.” He notes: “women no longer have enough time to perform their everyday duties at home — housework, the upbringing of children and the creation of a family atmosphere. We have discovered that many of our problems — in children’s and young people’s behavior, in our morals, culture and in production — are partially caused by the weakening of family ties and slack attitude to family responsibilities.” Hence the question: “what should we do to make it possible for women to return to their purely womanly mission?”

Well, Gorbachev (and the world), listen to the best Teacher and Guide for humanity, Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam. He elevated the women from their status as chattel to the dignity of being equal servants of Allah with men. Yet their status in society was not conditioned upon entering man’s world. Their most important task is to take care of the home and children. “Take care of your home for THAT is your Jihad.” [Musnad Ahmed]. Jihad is the epitome of Islamic life. Declaring home-making as Jihad for women is giving it the highest possible status in an Islamic society.

Not only is it an all-important task, only women are uniquely qualified to do it. It is not by accident that pregnancy and nursing are purely feminine tasks. Allah has given women the special talents and psychological makeup needed to take care of the children. There is no substitute for mother’s milk or mother’s love. No one can extract and bottle motherly compassion. Her patience, kindness, willingness to sacrifice her own comforts, and her natural affinity for children — and the children’s natural affinity for the mother– are the key to successful upbringing of children. A mother understands the children’s problem even when they cannot express it. She can uniquely sense their needs, both physical and emotional. She can satisfy some of these herself. For others, children need the father. But even he needs her insights in discharging his responsibilities in this area. No day care center or nursery can make up for the absence of the mother and father. “What the children need for their upbringing is not a poultry farm,” says Mufti Taqi Usmani.

Mothers are the silent workers who are indispensable for building character of the next generation. A believing mother who understands the crucial nature of her responsibility, will imbue her children with faith and moral values, as only she can. She will raise children with courage, honesty, truthfulness, patience and perseverance, love and kindness, faith and self-confidence. On the other hand, a society without mothers and home-makers will produce at-risk youth.

In a way their role is like that of the archer’s in the battle of Uhud. It looked less important, but was the key to the fate of the entire army. If women hold on to their front, the entire army will succeed. If they leave it for “greater action” elsewhere, everyone will lose.

یوُ این آئی نے ایک تحقیقی رپورٹ شائع کی ہے جس میں دعویٰ کیا گیا ہے کہ آج دنیا بھر میں بولی جانے والی تقریباً سات ہزار زبانوں میں سے نصف زبانوں کے وجود کو شدید خطرات لاحق ہیں۔

.لِونگ ٹنگز انسٹیٹیوٹ آف اِنڈینجرڈ لینگویجز نامی ادارہ جو زبانوں کے متروک ہونے کے خطرات پر کام کر رہا ہے، اس ادارے نے دنیا میں پانچ ایسے علاقوں کی نشاندہی کی ہے جہاں اقلیتی زبانیں شدید خطرات سے دوچار ہیں۔ اس ادارے کا تجزیہ ہے کہ اقلیتی زبانوں کے ختم ہو جانے سے نہ صرف ایک زبان ختم ہوتی ہے بلکہ اس زبان سے منسلک صدیوں پر محیط تہذیب و ثقافت، انسانی علوم اور تاریخ بھی صفحہٴ ہستی سے مٹ جاتے ہیں۔ مذکورہ تحقیق میں کہا گیا ہے کہ جو زبانیں خطرے سے دوچار ہیں ان میں سے بعض ایسی ہیں جو محض چند افراد ہی بول سکتے ہیں اور ایک اندازے کے مطابق عالمی سطح پر ہر دو ہفتوں میں ایک زبان متروک ہو رہی ہے۔ تحقیق کے مطابق نوجوانوں کے شہری علاقوں میں نقل مکانی کر جانے اور وہاں جا کر انگریزی یا دوسری عالمی زبانیں سیکھنے سے زبانوں کے متروک ہونے کے رجحان میں تیزی آ گئی ہے۔

تحقیقی ٹیم نے زبانوں کو درپیش خطرے کے پیش نظر ایک نقشہ بنایا ہے جس پر ان خطوں کو نمایاں کیا گیا ہے، جہاں علاقائی و مقامی زبانوں کو شدید خطرات لاحق ہیں۔ اس تحقیق میں شامل ایک امریکی ماہر لسانیات ڈیوڈ ہیرسن کا کہنا ہے کہ ایسے پانچ نمایاں ترین خطوں میں شمالی آسٹریلیا، مشرقی سائبیریا اور شمالی امریکہ کے علاقے شامل ہیں۔ شکر خدا کا کہ ایشیا ان علاقوں کی فہرست سے بچ گیا جب کہ یہاں بھی کئی مقامی زبانیں ہلاکت کے عمل سے دوچار ہیں۔ اس رپورٹ میں دم توڑتی زبانوں کو ریکارڈ کرکے محفوظ کرنے کی ضرورت پر زور دیتے ہوئے کہا گیا ہے کہ زبانوں کے مرنے سے سب سے بڑا خدشہ یہ ہوتا ہے کہ اس سے مقامی سطح پر پائی جانے والی معلومات کا خزانہ بھی جاتا رہتا ہے مثلاً پودوں، جانوروں، جگہوں کے نام اور ان کے بارے میں معلومات وغیرہ۔

ایک زبان میں جمع کی ہوئی معلومات اور حکمت کا اظہار کسی دوسری زبان میں ممکن نہیں ہوتا کیونکہ ہر زبان کا معلومات جمع کرنے کا ایک اپنا طریقہ ہوتا ہے، جب لوگ کوئی دوسری عالمی زبان شروع کر دیتے ہیں تو اپنی مادری زبان کی معلومات کا خاصا حصہ چھوڑ جاتے ہیں۔ ماہرین لسانیات کا خیال ہے کہ ہر زبان دنیا کو دیکھنے کا الگ ڈھنگ دیتی ہے۔ آج کل دم توڑتی زبانوں کو بچانے کی تحریک زور پکڑ رہی ہے لیکن ماہرین لسانیات کا کہنا ہے کہ اس عمل میں کامیابی صرف اس وقت ممکن ہے جب نئی نسل کو اپنے والدین، دادا، دادی یا نانا، نانی کی زبانیں بولنے کی طرف راغب کیا جائے۔ ماہرین اور سائنس دانوں کا خیال ہے کہ زبانوں کے خاتمے سے بائیو ڈرائیورسٹی کے بچاؤ کو بھی خطرہ درپیش ہے۔ امریکی سائنسدان ڈاکٹر ڈیوڈ ہیریسن کے مطابق ایکوسسٹم کے بارے میں زیادہ معلومات تاحال زبانی روایات تک محدود ہیں۔ ڈاکٹر ڈیوڈ کا کہنا ہے کہ اگر زبانوں کو خاتمے سے بچانے کی کوشش کی جائے تو اس سے معلومات کے ضیاع کو روکا جا سکتا ہے ۔ یعنی بات وہی ہے کہ زندہ قومیں اپنی زبان کے حوالے سے ہی اپنی شناخت اور وجود رکھتی ہیں، جس زبان میں کسی قوم کا مذہبی، اخلاقی، سماجی، ثقافتی، علمی، تاریخی ورثہ محفوظ ہو اگر وہی زبان آنے والی نسلوں کو بھلا دی جائے تو یقیناً اس قوم کے ذہن و قلب پر فتح یاب ہونا کسی بیرونی قوم کے لیے مشکل نہ ہو گا۔ اسی لیے فاتحین جب کسی شہر کو روندتے ہوئے داخل ہوتے ہیں تو سب سے پہلے وہاں کے تہذیبی، ثقافتی، تاریخی، علمی، ادبی سرمائے کی لوٹ مار کا اذن عام دیتے ہیں کہ مفتوح قوم کے پاس ایسی کوئی بنیاد اور انفرادی شناخت باقی نہ بچ رہے کہ وہ پھر سے اپنی جداگانہ حیثیت یا آزادی کے لیے برسرپیکار ہو سکیں۔

اردو انتہائی ثروت مند زبان ہے کیونکہ اس میں انتہا درجہ کی لچک یعنی دیگر زبانوں کے الفاظ سمونے کی صلاحیت موجود ہے۔ اس زبان کی تشکیل ہی نظریہٴ ضرورت کے تحت عمل میں آئی۔ شاہی لشکروں میں عربی، فارسی، ترکی اور مختلف مقامی بولیاں بولنے والے سپاہی موجود ہوتے تھے۔ باہمی رابطہ کے لیے انہوں نے ایک ایسی بول چال کی زبان اختیار کی جو مختلف زبانوں کا آمیزہ تھی۔ محمد حسین آزاد نے اپنی تاریخ ادب آب حیات میں اردو کے آغاز کے متعلق نتیجہ اخذ کرتے ہوئے یہ مثل تحریر کی ہے۔

کے مصداق یہ زبان مختلف بولیوں اور زبانوں کا حسین امتزاج ہے۔ یہ ضرورت یا رابطے کی زبان جو ہندی، ہندوی، ریختہ اردو معلیٰ کے ناموں اور اک گنگا جمنی ثقافتی اور علمی و ادبی عمل سے گزرتے ہوئے بالآخر اردو کے نام سے معروف ہوئی جو آج ہماری زبان ہے۔

برصغیر پر قبضے کے بعد انگریزوں نے جلد ہی بھانپ لیا تھا کہ اس ملک میں آئندہ اگر کوئی زبان مشترکہ زبان بننے کی صلاحیت رکھتی ہے تو وہ اردو ہے اسی لیے فورٹ ولیم کالج میں نووارد انگریزوں کو اردو کی ابتدائی تعلیم دینے کا سلسلہ شروع کیا اور یوں اردو کی بالواسطہ طور پر ترویج بھی ہونے لگی لیکن ہندووانہ تعصب کی بنا پر سنسکرت کے بھاری بھرکم الفاظ اور دیوناگری رسم الخط کو سیاسی مسئلہ بنا دیا گیا اور اردو کو بتدریج مسلمانوں کی زبان قرار دینے کی سازش رچائی گئی۔ سر سید احمد خان نے ابتداً جو دو قومی نظریہ کا تصور دیا تو اس کی بنیادی وجہ یہی اردو ہندی جھگڑا ہی تھا۔

پاکستان کے معرض وجود میں آنے کے بعد اگرچہ اردو کو قومی زبان کا درجہ دیا گیا لیکن عملاً یہ زبان اپنے ہی ملک میں کسمپرسی اور زوال کا شکار رہی۔

ہندوستان میں تو اسے مسلمانوں کی شناخت کی وجہ سے انتقام کا نشانہ بنایا گیا۔ اسی لیے معروف محقق اور ماہر لسانیات ڈاکٹر گوپی چند نارنگ نے لکھا کہ تقسیم ہند کا بدلہ کسی سے لیا جاتا ہو یا نہ لیا جاتا ہو مگر اردو سے ضرور لیا جاتا ہے۔

اسی تقسیم کا بدلہ لینے کے لیے اک بین الاقوامی سازش کے ذریعے بنگال میں اردو سے نفرت کو اس حد تک بڑھا دیا گیا کہ بالآخر یہ معاملہ علیحدگی کی شکل میں اختتام پذیر ہوا۔ اگرچہ آج بھی وہاں ہندوستانی فلموں اور ڈراموں کی وجہ سے اردو سمجھی جاتی ہے اور انڈین گانے خوب مقبول عام بھی ہیں لیکن انتقاماً اردو کی بیخ کنی کا عمل جاری ہے، وہاں اردو اخبار یا پرچہ نکالنا اردو بولنا کسی جرم سے کم نہیں ہے۔ اسی لیے اردو بولنے والے بھی اردو سے کنارہ کشی اختیار کرنے پر مجبور ہیں لیکن پاکستان میں بھی تو اپنی قومی زبان اردو کے ساتھ ایسا ہی انتقامی، سنگدلانہ اور سوتیلا سلوک روا رکھا جاتا ہے۔

اس وقت انتہائی دکھ اور ندامت کا احساس ہوا جب ہماری صوبائی اسمبلیوں نے مقامی زبان کے علاوہ انگریزی زبان میں حلف اٹھائے۔ کیا قومی زبان کی نسبت انگریزی زبان سے ہماری نسبت کچھ زیادہ ہے یا محض نفرت برائے نفرت کا برملا اظہار تھا۔ معروف شاعر جوش ملیح آبادی نے اپنی خودنوشت ” یادوں کی بارات “ میں لکھا ہے کہ انہوں نے ایک سرکاری افسر کو اردو میں خط لکھا جواب انگریزی میں آیا تو انہوں نے انگریزی زدہ افسر کو جواباً لکھا ” میں نے تو اپنی مادری زبان میں آپ کو خط لکھا تھا لیکن آپ نے اپنی پدری زبان میں مجھے جواب دیا “۔

انگریزی کی ترویج ہماری ضرورت اور مجبوری سہی لیکن اس کی آڑ میں اپنی قومی زبان کی بیخ کنی زندہ قوموں کا شعار نہیں ہے۔ بنگلہ دیش میں کمزور پڑتی مذہبی و اخلاقی اقدار کی وجہ جب میں نے دریافت کی تھی تو جواب ملا اس کی وجہ یہاں اردو زبان کا خاتمہ ہے کیونکہ اردو میں ہی مذہبی و اخلاقی سرمایہ احادیث و تفاسیر محفوظ تھیں جب اردو کو یہاں بین کیا گیا تو اردو حروف تہجی سے ناواقفیت کی بنا پر بچوں کو قرآن پاک پڑھنا بھی دشوار ہو گیا، مجھے خیال آ رہا تھا کہ آج جب ہمارے بچے گلط اور کھراب بول رہے ہیں تو ان کا قرآن پاک کا تلفظ کیسے درست ہو گا۔

انگریزی بولنا اسٹیٹس سمبل بن چکا ہے۔ اردو عوام الناس اور ملازموں کی زبان سمجھی جانے لگی ہے جس طرح کبھی پنجابی بولنا باعث شرم سمجھا جاتا تھا، آج بچوں کے ساتھ، ہوٹلوں اور عوامی مقامات پر انگریزی بول کر رعب گانٹھا جاتا ہے۔ انگریزی اسکولوں میں اردو میں بات کرنے پر بچوں کو جرمانہ کیا جاتا ہے۔ اس احساس زیاں سے قطع نظر کہ ہم اپنے بچوں کو ماڈرن یا برتر نہیں بنا رہے بلکہ ان کے قدموں تلے سے ان کی اپنی زمین کھسکا رہے ہیں۔ ان کی شناخت اور حقیقت ختم کر رہے ہیں۔ میڈیا اور خصوصاً ایف ایم ریڈیو پر جو شترگرگی بولی جا رہی ہے، عوام اس کی نقل کر رہے ہیں۔ اردو کے خوبصورت الفاظ جملے اور شعر تفنن طبع کے لیے بولے اور قہقہے لگائے جاتے ہیں۔

اردو کے ساتھ روا رکھی جانے والی صریحاً زیادتی پر عملی و ادبی ادارے خاموش ہیں کہ ان اداروں کے کرتا دھرتا تو خود اپنے بچوں کو امریکہ یورپ منتقل کرنے کی فکر سے دوچار ہیں، زبانوں کی سرپرستی حکومتیں اور زندہ قومیں کیا کرتی ہیں، ہماری ڈنگ ٹپاؤ حکومتیں اپنے ہی وجود کی بقا کے لیے ہاتھ پیر مارتے ختم ہو جاتی ہیں۔ عوام ملکی عدم استقامت کے خوف سے کہیں باہر پرواز بھرنے کو منقار انگریزی سیکھنے کو ترجیح دیتے ہیں، تو آخر اس زبان کا پرسان حال کون ہے۔ خدا نہ کرے کہ کبھی اس زبان پر بھی ایسا برا وقت آ جائے کہ اسے بھی ان زبانوں کے زمرے میں داخل ہونا پڑے جو اپنے وجود کی بقا کے خطرات سے دوچار ہیں۔

I was in the break-out room of our Mobilink office with dozens of colleagues huddled round the big TV screen watching the T20 WC final. The match was well poised but at a very critical juncture. Pakistan just lost its skipper Shoaib Malik and with an ever-increasing required rate the match was tilting slightly into India’s favour. There was a huge roar as soon as the new Pakistani batsman stepped onto the field, it was for none other than Shahid Khan Afridi, ‘the boom boom Afridi’.

People pinned their hopes on him, including myself though reluctantly. But my worst fears came true as on the very first delivery he faced from Irfan Pathan, he tried to hit him over the mid-on fielder but instead lofted it high enough to be caught & bowled for a first ball duck. Though, people do blame Misbah’s paddle sweep for the loss in Twenty20 final at the hands of India in 2007 but for me, it was Afridi, who was equally responsible for a very irresponsible shot in a WC final. I have been a very severe critic of Afridi all through his career and the reason for that was that I’ve always believed that he has all the shots in his stock to make him a complete batsman but never liked the guy for his irresponsibility and recklessness in crunch situations. For me he was ‘Doom Doom Afridi’, and with each of his outings as a batsman in the recent past he quite literally doomed the team with the bat.

Coming into the T20 WC 2009, I was again in particular critical of his selection along with Salman Butt. And it proved me right with the kind of start we had but it was all till the day we faced the Proteas in the Semi-final and it was no surprise that along with millions of other Pakistanis I was astonished to see the team spirit and the tenacity with which the green brigade played against the South Africans and of course the Shahid Khan Afridi.

Whether it’s the change in his batting order, his mindset or whatever it was, I was impressed. And although his masterful innings both in the semis and the final still doesn’t make me an overnight Afridi fan but yes he at last managed to wash out the stains he carried from the last T20 final and I was more than glad to see him bat like that. His bowling has been nothing short of exceptional recently but it was his bat that sealed the honour for the country. His performance with the bat in both crunch matches was probably the best of his career and he rightly deserved to be the man of both matches. More than anyone else this win would certainly make Afridi realize how useful he can be with this lethal combination of leather and wood given that he disciplines his both skills with the kind of fitness he already has.

The glitter of the gems that Afridi produced in the last two matches shouldn’t blind anyone from appreciating Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal, more than their skills it was their intelligence and understanding of the situation as bowlers that worked for Pakistani. Particularly I was really impressed by Saeed Ajmal and after a long time since Saqlain Mushtaq Pakistan finally got a very good thinking off spinner with an excellent control and temperament. Umar Gul, well the more we say about him the less, the guy has proved his mettle in all formats of the game, his swing, superb yorkers and variations with the bowl proved him too good for the opponents, specially seeing him bowling yorkers like that reminded one of Wasim and Waqar and thanks to him for the great difference he made. Both these gentlemen helped us reached the semi-final and beyond and actually paved the way for Afridi to take the cup home.

Muhammed Aamir is another upcoming talented lad along with Ahmed Shehzad and though the latter got few chances than he deserved the former grabbed the moment with both hands and very much made his own. There’s a lesson for Suhail Tanveer in it as well, ‘never let the money and fame go into your head’, if he’s sensible he won’t chose to walk Shoaib Akhter’s path.

And who can miss out on Abdul Razzaq, the veteran who justified his place on the very first match he had after a two year layoff. The three wickets he took in the final actually set the tone and Younis Khan very rightly said that, he had the match winners but couldn’t get the right combination and Razzaq’s inclusion helped him find that combination, which we all felt from the New Zealand match onwards. All other members notably Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik and other squad members along with Coach Intekhab Alam deserve all the adulation and appreciation. Congratulation to all of them!

And lastly on Younis Khan’s retirement, I think by keeping his weaknesses and strengths in mind, it was a very wise and timely decision he made. He not only redeemed himself from the initial criticism he received as a captain but now he walked away on a very very high note while shutting up all his critics.

And special congratulations to all our Pushtun brothers and sisters all around the world especially to all the IDP’s where ever they are in Pakistan. It was the Pushtun factor that was the major factor in bringing a major cup home after a lapse of 17 years.

In the end amidst all the uncertainty that surrounds us all, with so much to grief and so less to cheer, our cricket team has given us a reason to remember our identity and be proud of it. It was cricket at last that brought the smiles back, it was cricket at last that reminded the world ‘Don’t write us off’, indeed it was cricket at last …

Congratulation to every single Pakistani wherever they are!

Pakistan’s last World Cup game against Ireland had ended in grief, but here they seemed aware of the threat posed by their feisty opponents: after winning the toss Pakistan played within themselves but yet managed 159, thanks largely to a well-paced 57 by Kamran Akmal. Ireland’s batting is clearly their weaker suit, and considering their highest in the tournament so far is only 138, a target of 160 was always likely to be a tough ask. And so it proved, as they finished on 120.

Apart from Akmal, none of the other Pakistan batsmen got big scores, but there were reasonable partnerships for almost every wicket, ensuring there was no repeat of the collapse which had knocked Pakistan out of the 2007 World Cup. Ireland, as usual, made the opposition work for their runs, with Boyd Rankin being the stand-out bowler, but the inability to get wickets meant Pakistan finished with 27 more than they had managed in the 50-over game in Jamaica a couple of years back.

Akmal held the innings together with a measured knock. The confidence of having scored runs in the earlier games was clearly on display, and he was decisive with his footwork and generally sound with his shot selection. He began with a pick-up shot over midwicket for six off the hapless Trent Johnston, and continued to play both the meaty shots and the deft ones: a scoop over fine leg off Alex Cusack went for four, as did crisp drives through cover off the left-arm spin of Regan West.

Shahzaib Hasan and Shahid Afridi, promoted up the order to No.3, didn’t go on to get bigger knocks but they provided the early impetus. Shahzaib kept lofting the pitched-up deliveries over the infield with varying degrees of success till his luck finally ran out, while Afridi thrashed Cusack and West through the off side before Kyle McCallan deceived him with a superb slower, tossed up, offbreak.

Along with Rankin’s fiery burst with the new ball, McCallan’s clever bowling was the highlight for Ireland in the field. Rankin kept it tight and was desperately unlucky not to pick up a wicket, while McCallan’s outstanding flight and change of pace ensured none of the batsmen dominated him. Johnston had a nightmare game, conceding 20 in his second over and 12 in his third, as batsmen picked him off their legs quite effortlessly, but even he redeemed himself with an excellent fourth over, picking up Akmal with a yorker and conceding only four runs.

Ireland gave little away in the field, and yet a target of 160 was always beyond them. William Porterfield fought gustily for his 36-ball 40, but hit his first four in the tenth over of the innings, by which time the asking rate had already climbed to nine and a half. Paul Stirling, playing his first game of the tournament, showed some promise in his 17, which included an impeccable cover-drive to get off the mark, but the big difference between the two sides was in their boundary-hitting abilities - Pakistan struck 13 fours and four sixes; Ireland only managed six fours.

Pakistan’s bowlers were all disciplined, with Mohammad Aamer getting rid of the dangerous Niall O’Brien early. Afridi and Saeed Ajmal offered few scoring opportunities, while Umar Gul continued from where he had left off against New Zealand, knocking over the stumps thrice, including once off a free-hit ball, and then scoring a direct hit to run out Regan West.

A dropped catch by Abdul Razzaq late in the innings was a small blot, but overall it was a polished performance by a team which is increasingly looking like a sound bet for the title.
