HITEC University Taxila Cantt gets Charter

The Punjab Assembly has recently enacted law for establishment of HITEC University at Taxila Cantt in private sector. The university has been enivsaged to provide quality education to the studnet community. It is a project launched by HIT Taxila.

Government of Thailand’s scholarships for Postgraduate (Masters only) Program 2010

Thai International Postgraduate Programme (TIPP) 2010 was setup by the Royal Thai Government’s Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs. TICA under TIPP program has offered Master’s scholarships for Pakistani students in different courses. The applications from Pakistan will be routed through HEC.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIP:

Applicants should be nominated by their respective government (HEC).
Be under forty (40) years of age.
Be academically qualified to attend the study (Masters) Programme (see individual/particular course outlines for details)
Have a good command of written and spoken English.
Be in good health, both physically and mentally. Each applicant should have a health certificate provided by an authorized physician (Medical form is available). Pregnancy is regarded as a disqualifying condition.
Have a valid English Language certificate (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL)
Submit additional requirements of each course, mentioned in the course details.
Please be advised that if the awardees want to focus their research on the specific issue of their countries, they are encouraged to bring with them data from their home countries, since preparation of a thesis research begins early in the course. Thesis proposal will be developed throughout the first semester (for a one-year degree programme) or the first year (for a twoyear degree programme).

NWFP Assembly assent Abasyn University & Abdul Wali Khan University laws

The NWFP Assembly has approved laws of both Abasyn University, Peshawar and Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan. Both universities were previously operating under Ordinance from Governor NWFP.

Abasyn University was initially established under Ordinance No.V of 2007 in December, 2007 in private sector, while Abdul Wali Khan University was established under Ordinance No.III in February, 2009 in public sector.

Mr. ImranUllah Khan is the Chancellor of Abasyn University. He is a comitted man in his middle age and has worked for promotion of education in Peshawar.

Charter of Abasyn University has been approved as it is, while around 50 amendments have been made in the Charter of Abdul Wali Khan University.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMME FOR YEAR 2010

The Ministry of Education has sought applications for Cultural Exchange Scholarship Programmes for Master and Ph.D programmes through NTS.

Scholarships are expected from China, Turkey, Romania, Syria, Jorday, Tunis, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Mexico, Greece, Russia, Morocco, Srilanka, South Korea, Iran and Yemen.

The Ministry of Education will also provide subsidy at US $ 300 and 400 per month for Master's and Phd. students respectively and return air ticket under approved scheme to supplement the scholarship.

The candidates must have completed 16 year education e.g. 4-year B.S. (Hons), B.Sc. (Hons) in Agriculture, Engg, BCS, MBBS or Master degree in relevant field.

Dr Javaid Laghari is new Chairman HEC

Dr. Javiad R. Laghari has assumed charge of Chairmanship of the Higher Education Commission.

Previously he was President of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science & Technology (SZABIST), Karachi. He also remained Senator in Senate of Pakistan from March 2006 to July 2009.

He has also served as the Direcor of Graduate Strudies and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engg in State University of New York, Buffalo. He has published over 120 research papers and presented over 70 papers at International conferences.

He is recepient of Distinguished Leadership Award 1987, IEEE award of Leadership and Dedicated Study 1994 and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz 1998.

HEC's 10 % Foreign Scholarships

The HEC has invited appications from outstanding Pakistani/AJK nationals for the award of scholarships for higher studies leading to PhD. The scholarships will be awarded for Spring 2010 session in HEC identified world top ranked discipline wise Universities of the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore etc.

Candidates must have a minimum qualification of MSc., MA, MBA, B.E/B.Sc. Engg or equivalent (a total of 16 years education). A maximum of two second-division passes throughout the academic career and not less than 50% marks throughout the academic career.

University Of Cambridge 800th Anniversary Scholarships For Pakistani studnets

The University of Cambridge has introduced a new scholarship scheme for applicants of undergraduate admissions from Pakistan for 2010 entry onwards. The 800th Anniversary Scholarships have been created with funding from Cambridge Assessment, parent of Cambridge International Examinations who provide school exams throughout Pakistan and around the world.

The scholarships at the University of Cambridge are for school-leavers from Pakistan who meet the usual examination qualifications for admission to Cambridge. Applicants for all courses except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine are eligible to apply.

The scholarships will cover the cost of your tuition and College fees together with a grant towards maintenance and travel costs for each year of your course. The maintenance element of the scholarship will take account of your financial circumstances.

The scholarships are competitive and are conditional on a College offer to study at Cambridge, including meeting any immigration and English language requirements. Continuation of the scholarship from year to year will be conditional on satisfactory examination performance.

National Open Essay Competition 2009

Faculty of Arts, University of Sindh is organizing 1^stNational Open Essay Writing Competition Commemorating the 2^ndMartyrdom Anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.

The competition will be governed by following rules:

• The competition is open to all residents of Pakistan.

• Essays can be written in any of the languages spoken and written in Pakistan. But only those languages would qualify for competition in which we receive at least ten essays.

• There would be 3 separate prizes: 1^st, 2^ndand 3^rdamounting of Rs. 20000.00, Rs. 15000.00 and Rs. 10000.00 respectively for all languages.

• The essay must not be less than 1500 (Fifteen hundred) words and more than 3000 (Three thousand) words.

• The essay must be computer composed in A-4 size page (single-sided) Times New Roman with 12 (Twelve) font size. Essayists in languages other than English should observe standard page and font. Submission of essays through e-mail will be appreciated. However, hard copies are also equally acceptable.

• Competitors should send their brief introduction along with the script of their essays.

• The essays must reach the undersigned on or before October 30, 2009.

• Names of the winners will be announced on December 27, 2009 on the day of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s 2^ndanniversary and the prizes will also be given on the same day at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan. HEC states not to recognize degrees of students admitted in Al-Khair University after April 30th, 2009

The highest committee of HEC, in its 18^th meeting held in March, 2009, expressed grave reservations on the continued sub-standard operation of Al-Khair University. To safeguard the interests of students and ensure the provision of quality education in Pakistan, the Commission directed that Al-Khair University must stop all new admissions into its academic programmes and that the Higher Education Commission would not recognize any degree issued to students admitted into Al Khair University after April 30, 2009. Al-Khair University with a charter issued by Government of the AJ&K is not legally authorized to open any campus, grant affiliation or have franchises in any area of Pakistan unless it has the approval of the Provincial Government as well as the University having academic jurisdiction in that area.

The HEC has been forced to take the decision not to recognize the degrees of students of Al-Khair University admitted after April 30^th, 2009 in light of the fact that the Al-Khair University, chartered in 1994, has not established a proper main campus in AJ&K that fulfills the minimum requirements set in the Cabinet Criteria and guidelines for establishment of a new university. The university is offering degree programmes in professional disciplines such as law, pharmacy, electrical engineering, homeopathy etc. and is not meeting the minimum criteria for accreditation required by the respective accreditation bodies. Over the years the President AJ&K has also directed the university to meet the standards for the provision of quality education, build the requisite infrastructure and hire necessary faculty members. These critical issues have not been addressed by the university leading to the decision of the Commission to not accept future enrollments into any academic programmes of Al-Khair University.

To ensure that the students currently enrolled in this university do not suffer, the Commission has constituted a Committee to attend the issues of current Al-Khair University students with respect to quality, professional accreditation and recognition.

BP Chevening Award / Scholarship 2009/10

BP p.l.c. (third largest oil company of UK) has announced BP Chevening Award for students of M.Sc. in Energy Studies at Dundee University’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

The award will offer the successful candidate:

1.A sponsored place on the MSc in Energy Studies degree
2. Payment of academic tuition fees
3. 12 monthly stipends for living expenses for a single student
4. An arrival allowance and thesis/assignment allowance

Method of Scholarship Selection

There is no separate application form for the BP Chevening Scholarship. All candidates who are offered admission to the MSc In Energy Studies and who satisfy the criteria for consideration for the Scholarship, will be put forward for review by the relevant Committee composed of BP plcs, FCO and CEPMLP staff.

The first step, therefore, is to complete an application form for admission to the MSc in Energy Studies in Dandee University. In addition to the online application, candidates should submit to Kathleen Shortt: at k.a.shortt@dundee.ac.uk a brief statement, max. 250 words, explaining why student think that he/she should be considered for the scholarship.

Annemarie Schimmel Scholarhip for Women

The Scholarship was established in honour of Professor Annemarie Schimmel to commemorate her great contribution to culture and poetry in Pakistan and her role as a dedicated woman scholar. It offers the opportunity to do post-graduate study in the United Kingdom to a woman who is committed to make a genuine contribution to her chosen field on her return to Pakistan.

Eligibility

Schimmel scholars will be chosen for their ability and commitment without discrimination as to religion, caste or creed. Candidates must have a professional degree or they should have completed 16 years of education in a relevant discipline. They must be citizens of Pakistan and have a declared intention to return and pursue a career in Pakistan. Those having a minimum 2 year professional work experience will be given preference. There is no restriction on age, but preference will be given to candidates between the ages of 25 and 40. A genuine need for financial assistance is an essential condition of the scholarship. The candidates must supply adequate evidence that they would not be able to study abroad without financial assistance. Candidates must bear the expenses of air travel. While not a requirement, preference will be given to those candidates who have secured admission to a programme of study at a recognized institution of their choice in the United Kingdom. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, the scholarship committee reserves the right to make no nomination.

The Scholarship has a reputation for absolute fairness and is extremely generous. It allows candidates to choose from the best and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in Britain. It covers the full cost of tuition and basic living expenses. The selection is based completely on merit but a major consideration is given to the need of that particular degree for Pakistan and the commitment of the scholar to return and serve here.

Selection will not be restricted to any subject. Preference will be given to traditional humanities or sciences and also to humanitarian fields, such as public health, special education and ancillary medical fields, e.g. physiotherapy and radiography. Studies in economic development, social sciences and modular courses in various disciplines will also be considered. Subjects excluded are journalism, business, management, IT, media, and gender/women’s studies. Candidates wishing to pursue higher learning in areas related to Annemarie Schimmel's scholarship on Islam are encouraged to apply. The course of study can be purely academic or could involve practical training. Prospective candidates are strongly urged to acquire basic computer literacy and word processing skills.

The Schimmel Scholarship is awarded for one academic year (session starting Sept/Oct. 2010) for a Master’s degree at recognized institutions of higher education in the UK. Doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan

The Government of NWFP has established Abdul Wali Khan University at Mardan through a Governors' Ordinance to be first university in District Mardan, which is the second most popolous city in NWFP.

Initially, Government Post Graduate College for Men and Government Post Graduate College for Women are declared as constituent units of Abdul Wali Khan University and subsequently main campus will be established on land of around 5000 near Motorway M-I .

Turkish Scholarships for OIC Member States

Ministry of Education of the Republic of Turkey is offering scholarships to students from all OIC Member States for Research level (Non-Degree) studies, graduate studies and higher education studies at Bachelor, Master and Doctoral/Ph.D. levels. ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Undergraduate candidates should have a “good” level of a high school graduation degree. The high school which was graduated from should be equivalent to the high schools in Turkey. Candidates should not have suspended education more than 2 years after graduation and not be older than 25 years on the date of application.
Candidates for graduate studies (Master/PhD) should be a graduate of a 4-year university and not be older than 40 years on the date of application.

The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s scholarship program for study, research and professional development in Australia.

The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards provide financial support for international students for up to 3 years to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters or PhD level either by coursework or research in any field of study in Australia.
Eligibility Conditions:

1. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree at the time of application that demonstrates high academic achievement.

2. Endeavour Postgraduate Award applicants must have applied for and gained admission to a Masters or PhD course in Australia. Conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application.

3. Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency. Have undertaken one of the following English language tests, no earlier than 31 December 2007, and obtained the minimum English language requirements set out below:

a) IELTS-Academic Test Overall score of 6.5 with no individual band less than 6.0
b) TOEFL-Paper Based Test (PBT) Score of 580 including a TWE (Test of Written English) score of 4.5
c) TOEFL- Computer Based Test (CBT) Score of 230 including an Essay Rating score of 4.5
d) TOEFL-Internet Based Test (IBT) Overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 22 in the writing section and no less than 20 in the other sections

5. All Endeavour Postgraduate Award Holders must commence their approved program and Award between 15 January and 30 November 2010. Applicants who have commenced or intend to commence their program at their host organisation in 2009 are ineligible to apply.

6. Applicants who completed an Endeavour Award and/or AusAID scholarship in the two calendar years before the current round of the Endeavour Awards are not eligible to apply.

The UNESCO has announced scholarship research programmes for women (born after 01.01.1975), who are pursuing Ph.D. degree programmes/completed Ph.D. The nominations are to be routed through Higher Education Commission.

Last Date for receipt of application in HEC is 10.05.2009.
