It is one of the most dis-reputed occupations of all. Yet, almost everybody who matters in society would love to be a politician on the front or backstage. It has glamour, power, money and what not.

Political landscape belongs to those who have amassed wealth through landholding or industrial and commercial empires or who have inherited power through politico-religious outfits. Middle-class politicians are to be found in only MQM (Mutahidda Qaumi Movement) and Jamat-e-Islami. Both are largely confined to specific locations in the country. The nationally recognized and voted parties include the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid). On a much smaller scale is Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf of the world-renowned cricketer Imran Khan.

The Top 3 parties comprises the rich who have had humble beginnings but made it to the top in the corridors of power at one time or the other and are known to have amassed as much wealth as possible.

The Constitution of Pakistan 1973 provides for parliamentary form of government on the pattern of Great Britain.

During the past six decades of its existence, Pakistan has been ruled by the military for more than three decades with absolute power and for longer tenure each time than a civilian government. Every time a military ruler staged a coup against a civilian government, he was overwhelming welcome by the people in general. The reason being that each coup took place at a time when the incumbent civilian government had already become unpopular and the people were craving for a change. Since we never had two-party system in the country in its true sense and form, the military had the option to step in every time the incumbent government was no longer wanted by the general public.

Although the military rulers reigned as dictators and crushed the opposition in every conceivable way, the civilian rulers were no better either. The civilian rulers turned out to be as dictatorial as the military rulers and gagged the media, judiciary, opposition, and parliament. The only difference between two has the length of tenure. The military rulers lasted for 10 years at a time while the civilian rulers could'nt complete even five years of their constitutional tenure.

None of the political parties could ever score more than 37% of the total votes caste in general elections. Yet, by sheer division of votes, parties were able to obtain large number of seats in legislatures, provincial or federal, without being popular by headcount. As a result, the civilian rulers always remained morbidly fearful of the opposition whether it came from the rival political parties, judiciary, media or parliament.

It failed to put in place civilian infrastructure to handle the expected influx of IDPs. Our political leaders inside and outside parliament are demanding stoppage of mily operation, silently or vocally, directly or indirectly, privately or publicly, but none of them is reprimanding the government on its gross negligence of duty and the resulting enormous human suffering to our own people who are displaced out of compulsion.

Is it part of a grand plan to neutralize the armed forces by tarnishing their public image and holding them responsible for the massive influx of IDPs in the eyes of the sufferers, directly or indirectly? What are our political leaders upto? Are they helping India whose infiltration is well-established and whom our armed forces are fighting for the sovereignty of our homeland? Dont they realize what damage they are causing to the country? Are we left with NO patriotic political leadership in the country? Dont they realize what the armed forces will ultimately do to them out of compulsion?

The people are deeply disappointed with the leadership of both PML(N) and PML(Q) who claimed to be the successors of All-India Muslim League on their dismal performance in the current scenario. Both are hiding behind the curtains to keep themselves 'qualified for a change' but Insha Allah the change wont come for their benefit UNLESS they come out of their shells and behave the way patriotic leaders behave anywhere in the world. Allah is the best accountant of all, let us not forget it.

I appeal to all patriotic Pakistanis to condemn these political leaders and stand by the side of our armed forces who are practically fighting another Pak-India war.

Mumtaz A. The prime minister should have called the APC before launching the military operation, before responding to the Washington's call and before making the late-night speech on TV directing the military to launch the operation when the operation had ALREADY been launched much earlier and the prime minister himself had publicly announced it.

Our politicians are once again paving the way for military take-over or rather tough Martial Law of the 1958 kind. The US officials are being persuaded to declare again and again that the US would not support military take-over in Pakistan. Did our military ask the US or the government did it? The US has always supported military coup in Pakistan; history does'nt lie. The US has the history of supporting military coup whenever and wherever it suited them. The US believes in democracy ONLY for the American people; rest of the world does'nt deserve democracy.

President Obama has already declared that the democracy in Pakistan is "very fragile" and that the government cant deliver the basic amenities to its people.
Dear Dr. Shahid Masood:

I have had the opportunity of viewing parts of your program. I beg to differ from your online analysts about the upcoming scenario in the country.

1. The PPP-led governments in Islamabad, Sindh and Balochistan have performed miserably in delivering the promises of party election campaign. Nor has it shown political acumen and administrative capability to deal with the internal and external threats and challenges and core public issues. The budget is expected to be yet another disaster for the people and may lead to mass agitations in the country.

2. President Zardari has been unable to establish his credentials as the party leader and the head of the State. He still holds both positions which itself shows his inner weaknesses and apprehensions. His party is in doldrums.

3. Prime Minister Gilani's popularity graph shot up temporarily in March. He is now stuck up and does not know how to conduct the country's administration. His political acumen and administrative capability are close to zero. He cant be described as the 'Moon Among the Stars.' His own cabinet ministers issue statements contradictory to those of the PM; the latest example being of the statement of the PM that drone attacks were discussed with Mr Holbrooke while the Defence Minister denied it. Mr Holbrooke himself denied having discussed the issue.

4. The military has been engaged in an operation that is NOT going to end in the near future, no matter what the predictions, promises and hopes. That is quite evident from the resistance it is facing from the militants. There are no two opinions about the justifiability of the military operation but the haste in which it was started and the government's lack of advance planning for handling the displaced persons before starting the operation are going to boomerang sooner than expected.

5. Mian Nawaz Sharif has, undoubtedly, emerged as the most powerful leader. He appears to have attained political maturity. However, he is still under 'suspicion' and 'the powers that be' are most unlikely to trust him as the prime minister. Moreover, he won't like to work under Mr Zardari as president.

6. US is as confused about Pakistan-Afghanistan quagmire as our government and leaders are. Mr Holbrooke has hardly been able to make his mark. President Obama's administration did a good deal of home work by consulting the think-tanks, inhouse experts and the relevant governments, but the outcome in the form of AFPAK strategy has'nt met with success and satisfaction of the stakeholders.

7. US is playing a dual game. The militancy in Pakistan is NOT only caused by the deprivation of the affected territories but also the infiltration of foreign hands led by India. The US MUST stop India from its infiltration; otherwise, the game is most likely to turn against the US and the Nato. The Pakistan military will sooner or later come under unbearable pressure from within and the public for a full-scale war with India.

8. 'The powers that be' have no choice but to replace Mr Zardari with Makhdoom Amin Faheem and Mr Gilani with Mian Shahbaz Sharif. Both gentlemen are most likely to be acceptable to the stakeholders and the general public in Pakistan.

9. Let Mr Zardari be contented with his status as co-chairman of the PPP. Mr Gilani can be accommodated as the Speaker of the National Assembly, if need be. His performance as Speaker earlier had remained above board.

10. Mian Nawaz Sharif should focus on his party as its Quaid and play the back-end role of the powerful political leader to guide the party, nation and the government. I am afraid he will have to wait till 2013 to step in the shoes of the prime minister or president.

11. Punjab should have a coalition government of the PPP, PML(N) and PML(Q) to bring peace, progress and prosperity in the province. The inter-party rivalry and the escalating menace of terrorism can't be tackled without respecting the mandates of all the leading parties in the provincial assembly. It is indeed disgusting that the province does'nt have the full cabinet so far. Half of the portfolios are lying with the Chief Minister.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Kind regards.
