Reliable Pigeon Pest Control Solutions

2012-03-19T02:54:00.000-07:00

Before starting to reveal some of the most effective pigeon pest control solutions, it would be interesting to share with you one good ancient Chinese proverb. It sounds like - "You can not stop the birds of sorrow from flying over your head but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair". While this has a deep philosophical meaning and approach it can still be applied to some of the issues that we encounter on a daily basis, especially when dealing with pigeon removal in big cities like London or New York.

Keeping pigeons away from your property is not that complicated as it seems. It is not rocket science. However, first of all it is necessary to mention some of the unknown and unpleasant issues that these birds might contribute to. There have been many debates about pigeons carrying diseases which can be transmitted to us, human beings, via direct contact or their feces. However, experts say that these statements have no solid scientific proof. On the other hand, it is well known that their droppings can damage the paint on your vehicle or the finish on a construction. This can actually cause more headache to owners of buildings and houses then the possible diseases that they might be transmitters of.

These are the most reliable pigeon control methods that are going to keep them away from your property.

a) Pigeon Spikes.

Using pigeon spikes that are ideal for modifying the roost of a house is an effective technique. Roost modification means changing the ledges of a building in such a way that pigeons no longer wish to land on them. The changing of ledges by applying spikes is a very humane method of pigeon control. The spikes do not actually hurt the pigeons - they simply act as a physical barrier, preventing pigeons from landing.

b) Pigeon Repellent

A pigeon repellent is a semi toxic spray substance that can be purchased in any pest control store. It is effective but people that have pets in or near their house often tend to avoid it as it might bring more harm then benefit. We do not recommend using a chemical pigeon repellent until consulting with a pigeon exterminating expert.

c) Pigeon Netting

Netting is another form of physical barrier that stops birds from landing in places that you want to keep them away from. It is another effective method that doesn't use any rude tricks. While pigeon extermination techniques are allowed mostly everywhere it is still not good to use deadly methods to get rid of these birds.

d) Specialist Cleaning

However, if you are totally against fighting the pigeon's presence on the roof of your house, then you might try other methods to deal with their feces and nests. There are companies that provide a great clean up service of pigeon droppings and general muck. This is an alternative for all those that can afford more pricey services and are not willing to install spikes, nets or use some kind of pigeon repellent.

CARE OF A LOST PIGEON (KABOOTAR)

2012-03-17T08:35:00.000-07:00

What if you find a lost pigeon.

Water

Most lost birds are hungry and thirsty. Water is necessary before all else. Since pigeons drink by suction, any water container should be at least 1 in. (2.5 cm) deep. An open container, i.e., a dish, an old margarine container tub, etc., is best. While a thirsty bird may drink immediately, it also may not. A bird that's gone without water for a while is sometimes so exhausted, it doesn't even realize that water is in front of it, especially if the water container you use is different from what it is familiar with. A trick I've often used is to trickle a few drops of water from on high into the container to make a splashing sound. When they hear that, most birds will invariably head to drink. If a bird looks really exhausted, Gatorade or other proprietary sports drink may be added to the water. A teaspoon or two per cup (250 ml) of water will help replenish electrolytes.

Food

Pigeons are grain eaters. While park pigeons will eat bread, most domestic birds have been raised on a multi-grain mixture and have never seen a slice of it. In fact, they would likely ignore it as possible food. Try feeding them something else from around the house. Popcorn (maize), rice, white or brown, split peas, barley, buckwheat (kasha), canary seed, etc., are all good first options to feed a lost bird with. THESE GRAINS SHOULD NOT BE COOKED OR POPPED BUT FED RAW. Water should also be provided since pigeons normally drink immediately after eating.

GENERAL PIGEONS CARE | TIPS ON FEEDING PIGEONS

2012-03-17T08:31:00.000-07:00

During the time the pigeon you rescued is recovering, suggested containers are a wicker cat basket. rabbit hutch, shed or large box with strips cut away to permit light. Newspaper bedding is the most suitable but needs regular changing! Give mixed corn, bird grit and fresh water in a heavy bowl. If rehabilitation in an aviary is not possible, a spare room or garage allows one to tell if the pigeon can fly properly prior to release. Perfect weather conditions for this are sunny and windless, preferably not in winter. Release near an existing flock where water is always available.
TIPS ON FEEDING PIGEONS
For food, feral pigeons rely on our generosity and wasteful ways. In the pigeon's interest it is important not to throw food where notices prohibit it, such as railway station forecourts etc. Doing so will attract a large flock and consequently adverse attention from authorities who can and will take action to the pigeon's detriment.
Safe sites are open spaces and parks. It is best not to feed bread near gutters as hungry birds will be tempted to follow stray crumbs into the path of traffic. If you can, feed mixed corn (from pet shops). It is nutritionally superior and is quickly consumed with less risk of crusts being left to encourage rats and still more unsympathetic notice.
Feeding is especially appreciated in the winter months, and water should be provided in gardens as all species drink freely and enjoy bathing.

Pigeons (kabootar) Care

2012-03-17T05:02:00.000-07:00

There are almost 200 varieties of pigeon. Some may fly well while some can not. Each variety differs from another with respect to color as well. No matter the type of breed, pigeons have been kept as pet by the kings as well as the poor peasants, the old as well as the young. These birds like to perch and generally prefer a flat place for perching. So, if you are caging a pigeon in your house, make sure of proper pigeon care by providing the bird with a big cage with ample scope of perching.

The following are some steps of pet pigeon care that would help you to maintain your pigeon efficiently.

Steps of pet pigeon care

A big cage is necessary for your pigeon. The cage should be that big enough to provide the bird enough space to stretch its wings.

Place the cage away from the reach of dogs, cats and other pets. Pigeons prefer cages that are at least covered from two sides. Placing of the cage near the wall would be a good idea. Or you may also use a cloth or a towel to cover a part of the cage. But the cage must be at the same time well ventilated.

As pigeon care make provisions for your pet pigeon to carry out its regular exercise at least for 2 hours.

To facilitate perching you may introduce a plat brick for the pigeon.

A pigeon when it attains the age of 5 or 6 months becomes sexually matured. With the permission of the hen the cock builds up a nest for the couple to breed and lay eggs. For your pet even if it is single, the bird would likely prefer to build its own nest out of instinctual habit. For proper pigeon acre you may provide your pet pigeon with a bucket lined with a towel as his nest. Pigeons generally prefer cup shaped nest.

The cage must be cleaned on a regular basis. Unlike ducks pigeons prefer dry places. Keep a watch on the food that they eat. Often due to lack of pigeon care the food gets contaminated with their won feces which may lead to attack of disease. You may use vinegar for cleaning the cage. The vinegar is acidic in nature and is even able to destroy bacterial germs, molds and fungus.

Pigeons are basically grain eaters and their diet should include nutrient in equal proportion. You may buy pigeon food from pet stores or you may also prepare on your own. An ideal pigeon food must contain 12% to 15% protein. The common food items for a pigeon include wheat, peas (yellow or green), barley, millet, corn, flax seeds, oats, sesame seeds and even sometimes brown rice. You may also serve your pet with green vegetables like small pieces of carrots, kale, unsalted peanuts and spinach. Sunflower seeds and black oils seeds are some of the favorite treats of pigeons. Pigeon grit is very important for digestion. The grit may consist of ingredients like oyster shells, charcoal, salts and other minerals. If you are proving pellets as the food for the pigeon, you are not required to add grits to it.

Pigeons must be given fresh water every day. Once a week you may give apple cider vinegar for pigeons which will be followed by a day of fresh water and then pro-biotic. Garlic clove soaked in water can also be served to the pigeon once a week. This will help to strengthen the immune system of the bird.

Pigeons that mainly stay indoors special pigeon care has to be taken for providing nutrition. Nutritious elements like minerals, vitamins like vitamin D3 are essential for pigeons. From your nearby pet store you can buy avian supplements like Globals, Foys, Siegels, and Jedds.

During the time of molting you may treat your birds with wheat germ oil.
