Stop ACTA - Valcea

On the 11th of February, at -10 degrees Celsius, almost 80 people went out in the center of Ramnicu-Valcea, Romania, demanding the EU to reject the ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a global treaty which was signed in secrecy, that could allow corporations and governments to censor the internet.

If you want more information about ACTA, the petition is a good starting point. A list of Romanian EU members of the parliament who are pro-ACTA, can be found here, together with instructions on how to contact them. Here are some images from the protest in Valcea:

Open Source all the projects

Yesterday, I decided to flood GitHub with all my projects that were sitting in remote places on my computer. So, until now I have uploaded People Separator, 2 crawlers, 2 web projects, 5 Wordpress child themes, and a whole bunch of other things.

People Separator

With this app I went to InfoEducatie and GrepIT in 2011. It splits up people in groups, based on their social profile. I used ASP.NET MVC 3, for building it, because I thought that my C++ knowledge will help me. Now, I regret I didn't use Rails. A better description of what it does, is on Github. Also, at GrepIt, I made a commercial for it:

Volunteer management system

My first PHP project for a local NGO, Europe Direct Valcea. Volunteers and activities are stored in a database, and for each activity the volunteer completes, he gets a number of points. At the end of the year, the top volunteers receive a prize, and all the other people can see transparently their hard work.
Working example

Two Column Questions

At Europe Direct Valcea, another I had the task to hold a workshop, where me and my team had to teach 30 kids from the 6th grade, things about Europe. So I developed a web app, where 2 or more teams compete on selecting the correct question and answer. As an example, here on the left are important persons, and on the right, Europeean countries. The kids had to correctly match the person with the country.

Tabulaturi.ro Crawler

Tabulaturi is a well known Romanian website with guitar tabs for songs. But it misses a feature: a ranking with the best tabs. So I wrote a crawler in Python, that uses urllib2 and BeautifulSoup, parses each page with tabs, and then writes the needed information to songs.txt. Then parser.py, takes that file and sorts the songs by the number of persons who voted, then by the number of stars, and outputs everything to ranking.txt.

"Arhiva Campion" is a well known algorithm judge in Romania. But you have to click a lot to find a problem. So I've written a crawler in Python, and generates out.csv, with every problem in the archive. Then, you can use an Excel table to filter the problems.

DefCamp 2011 - Bran

DefCamp 2011, the first cyber-security conference in Romania, was held in Bran between 30 September - 2 October. Almost 70 hackers gathered to talk, share experience and have fun.

Prologue

I learned about this conference first from Andrei Avadanei at GrepIT. He told me that he has secured 2 nights for about 60 persons, at a nice hotel in Bran. I was a little sceptical, but nevertheless, I waited for an online confirmation.

Then on 9 September, the website went on. Based upon a form, the participants were split up in 2 groups: VIP and non-VIP. The VIP ones had their accommodation paid, at Club Vila Bran.

First day

I took the bus from Valcea to Bran on 30 September. After a 5 hour travel on the potholed roads of Romania, I finally arrived near the hotel. There, I met Andrei and other guys from RST, a well known Romanian security forum which I often visit.

Also, I met Vlad Stoian. He is a CS student at University Al.I. Cuza in Iasi. We talked about computer science Olympiads at Yahoo! Open Hack, and he was in the jury at InfoEducatie (but not at my category). So we decided to stay in the same room.

The location was a geek's dream: a remote 3 stars hotel, in a good Romanian mountain resort. The conference room had enough space for all of us, but the router didn't manage to serve all the 60-70 laptops (medium speed was about 8 kb/s...). And also in the conference room it was a little cold, but the coffee, red bull and coke from the organisers made us forget about it

The first presentation was a call to action by Andrei, in which he exposed the current problems of security and the fact that communities tend to not cooperate. Then Ilie Valentin presented a history of security and vulnerabilities, in which the "old" guys remembered how was it when the number of IRC bots represented your status in the hacking world. The last presentation was by Petre Popescu about PHP flaws, and how to protect from them.

After the keynotes, we went to the nearby restaurant to eat. Adrian Zainea was a guy who helped Andrei organise the event, and he was especially intrigued about us, hackers, as a community. So we tried to explain him the basic rules on how we live and work.

Second day

Presentations started at 9 o'clock with Tamper Data for Processes, by Ionut Popescu, where he presented methods of hijacking processes (this was the most exotic presentation for me). Then Andrei presented his pet project SYDO, a plugin which tries to secure data permissions between client and server, by adding another middle server (it's available on Github). Then, one of the most interesting presentations was by Ionut Maroi on SQL Injection, because he coded a demo website, where we could exploit the vulnerabilities. Then Andrei came yet again, and presented us his big project, Smart Fender, a defensive platform with lots of tools that help developers be prepared for attacks be malicious persons.

From 3pm, DefCamp Forensic Contest 2011 started. It was a hacking contest which consisted of an archive, which had other 7 archives in a "matrioska" style, where to get to the next level, you had to solve a problem. I teamed up with Vlad, and we managed to solve 3 levels, till 2 a.m. in the morning. The tasks consisted of decoding esoteric languages, or observing a well known algorithm problem in a Javascript, or even doing matrix multiplication from images (feel free to try and solve the problems). Thank you Hertz for creating these awesome challenge. After 12 hours of brain draining, we went to sleep very tired (w/o playing any Starcraft :( ), but we were happy that Andrei told us that we are in top 3.

Last day

At 9 m, we were sleeping at the first presentation: Injection in forms, by Dragos Gaftoneanu, and then we slowly woke up at "Bypass CSRF with Captcha". At the award ceremony we learned that we got 2nd place, and that Cristofor Ochinica owned us, finishing level 5. However, me and Vlad won Bitdefender licenses and an external hard drive.

Going home was not as easy as I planned, because I didn't know where the bus picked up people. So I managed to loose it for the first time. But the 2nd time, I wasn't alone, so successfully got it right

Epilogue

All in all, it was a hell of a conference :D. So that's why I recommend you participating in the next DefCamp, at Iasi, on 17 december. Sadly I cannot participate (fuck school), but I think it will be another great event.

GrepIT 2011 - Summer Holiday

GrepIT Botosani 2011, was the final contest of the summer, and took place between 28 August and 2 September. There were 2 categories: developers (split in apps and web) and media (split into stop motion and movies). It was a funny experience, where I felt like the organizers were also contestants. It was also a lesson for me, on how to organize an event.

The road to GrepIT

I learned about the contest at InfoEducatie: Andrei Avadanei told me about it. Then, with Ionut Budisteanu, we took the train to Botosani. All the travel, we met other contestants, and chatted with the Twitter Channel, which said us a good joke:

The organisers

I learned later that the chief, Doru Stefanescu was in charge with making us feeling happy. We were spammed each evening with messages on the phones :-). The location was really great: The Memorial House of Mihai Eminescu, which had some pretty nice and cozy lodges. Also the food was great: each morning we got Nutella and milk with Nesquick and each meal we had pancakes. Also we had ID badges with QR codes: if you would have wanted to learn someone's phone number or email, you directly scanned his badge.

Memorable nights

Each night was for "networking", at which we played different games. We played a team game, were we had to move a ping-pong ball from a bowl to another with our breath, we ran in pairs, each member tied at one leg, a race in potato bags and other crazy stuff. Then played Mafia, and it was a pretty long game. Also, after the games, we gathered to sing and play the guitar, with the chords and lyrics on the projector, and 2-3 guitars in the background. Thanks Cristi and Vlad for preparing the nights.

The contest

But there was also a contest, splitted in two sections: web and apps. The biggest prize: an Asus Transformer :-O. Congrats Marius, but I liked the scoring style: 25% of the score you got from the other participants, and 75% from the jury. I managed to finish the algorithm for my app, in exactly that morning, and it really worked :-). And for my 2nd pitch, I think I have a long road till when I will be at 5% of Steve Jobs... but I have time.

Workshops

The best things was a round table, were we all sat and talked about mobile platforms: we discussed every little bit from the users point of view of iOS, to the difficulties of a developer on Windows Phone platform, and we compared which should be OS to start with mobile app developing.
Also, we had a workshop with a guy from uCoz, and Adi Mironescu presented us a pretty neat early-alpha secret project :-). And Mihai Agape, presented us some pretty neat robotics.
Also, on the last day, we had an whole day workshop which "got us out of our comfortable places" (Andrei used that expression). We had to do short film, where we presented our app. Thanks Delia Zosin, for helping me, even though I was a little grumpy (the app guys got to code an OpenGL project in Python :( ).

Last words

Even though this article comes at about 3 months after the contest, I hope I remembered all the events. All in all, it was a very good contest, and next year, I won't miss it for sure.

Letter to Steve

Dear Steve,

This morning, when I woke up... I sensed it was something wrong. And as a matter of coincidence, when I went to school, I took my blue t-shirt with an iPod.

Then, when I saw the news, I was shocked. It's funny to see that another genius, Albert Einstein, was right: "Coincidence is God's way to remain anonymous".

Then, I ran from my school classes, to a hill, where I could see the panorama of my city... and started thinking: why do I miss you ?!

It's not the fact that both of us are geeks... or we love the same music... or I love your creations. It's because you have made me believe that my dreams will come true someday, and you have inspired me to work very hard each day to fulfill them.

I know from today, that you won't be only in my pocket, or on my computer screen... you will be in every hard moment of my life, remembering me to stay hungry and foolish.

RoJam 2011 - National Romanian Scout Jamboree

The National Romanian Scout Jamboree took place between 11 and 21 August, in Salistea, Sibiu. Almost 1.300 scouts participated, and I was one of the lucky persons to spend 10 memorable days, with my patrol from our local centre in Valcea.

Arrival

We arrived at Saliste by train. There, we were picked up and went straight to the camp, at about 2 kilometres. Then we picked up our IDs and our neckerchiefs, and we were prepared for action.
The camp was divided in subcamps, based on the old regions in Romania. We, with our friends from the local centres in Bacau, Radauti, Red-Bucharest and our friends from Israel were assigned to represent Dobrogea (the seaside region in Romania).

First things

As soon as we got in the camp, we had 3 missions:

to put our tents
to build a shelter where to eat
to build a gate

So we started to work :-).

The schedule

The wake up was at 7 a.m., followed by refreshing exercises at 7:30. Then at 8 a.m. we had breakfast, and the departure for the activities was at 8:30, with the lunch in our backpacks. We then, arrived from the activities at about 5-6 pm, ate our supper, then went to different activities. The time when we went to sleep, was mandatory for all, but a little early: only 11 pm :-).
I could say it was a reasonably schedule. But, we teenagers in the summer, go to sleep at about 2 am, and wake up at 11-12 am. This was a shock, and I was lucky to have my friends, Edy and Flaviu, which woke me up with yelling and fights :)).

Back to basics

First day of action: we had to build a catapult, a bridge, a hammock, a boat, and we had to ignite fire with flint. But first, the leaders remainded us the basics of nodes and joints, and gave us some little secrets about the projects.

Adventure

We climbed two climbing walls, had a GPS and a compass track, went through an army track with wheels and web, climbed vertically with the force of our hands (on caving equipment), and finally went on the 120m flying fox.

Non-formal Education Fair

A bunch of interesting workshops: radio, first help, advanced nodes, scout games, guitar, painting, hand made stuff, public speaking and all you can imagine.

Olympiad

It was the day of competition... the day when we played the games of Zalmoxis...
It's not how you imagine it... all the games where very funny: we had "the throwing boots" trial, I had to guide my blinded team through a terrain of mines, we had to roll over like logs, be a worm together, make a safety net for a dropping egg. It was a tireless day, but, the next day would be the most difficult.

Hike

The objective: to reach peak Cindrel at 2244m, from 800m, in 2 days.
The whole hike had 55.6 km. If you want the map, you can download this file and open it in Google Earth.
It was extremely hard... I mean carrying a backpack of 20 kgs, for 10 hours... then helping your exhausted friends, then sleeping 6 hours, and another 10 hours of hiking... it's exhausting. But the energy you take, and the pride that you've beat the mountain is extraordinary.

Calfe

Well, the next day we should have gone to Saliste, and do stuff that would have helped the community... but we were so tired, that we slept all day long.

Exploration

So we recharged our batteries, and went to Sibiu to explore it. The citadel was in danger, so we, The Bell Ringers, need to complete The Great Quest, because We The Almightys, would save it from destruction. So we run in the city, gathering clues, and solving quests. It was really fun to play scout games, in the middle of the city :-).

Glocals

In the last day of RoJam, we had another fair. This one was based on 3 principals: social, economic and ecology. We had to finish, as many workshops as possible. So, we played an economic game, like monopoly, but we were countries and we had to help each other grow. Then, we built a solar oven, and cooked a chocolate in it. The last task was the most difficult: we had to pass over a rope, without touching it, and all of us (about 20) were holding our hands together, and we couldn't let go of them. We tried to pass it for about an hour, and finally managed to go over it. At the end, we were so happy and couldn't believe that we did something that at first was impossible.

Final thoughts

All this ended, how it begun: with fireworks, and a message that we, all scouts, were part of history.
We learn scouting by doing, by playing, by working in teams, by making friends, and I'm proud I'm a scout.

InfoEducatie 2011 - Summer Holiday

InfoEducatie is a national IT contest, which takes place every year at Galaciuc, Vrancea. It is a place where high-school hackers gather, to present their projects to juries from different universities or companies (Google, Amazon)

My project

PeopleSeparator - it is a web application, which groups people, based on their social profile. For the moment it only uses the common friends and common likes from Facebook to calculate how close can a human be to you.

The idea came when I was reading The Facebook Effect by David Kirkpatrick, and saw that Mark Zuckerberg saw Facebook first as an utility for the world. Like a demo, I created a website for an IT camp (TechFriendCamp), and implemented the separator to it. I'll write a full detailed article about it, after I finish this series about my holiday.

Local phase

Well, I worked till 8 a.m. in the morning, and the contest was at 9 a.m. I tried to deploy the app at 8:30, but... it didn't work (I didn't have some dependencies installed). So I took my desktop computer to the presentation of the project.

All things were good, I had my "portable" tower with me, but when I had to present I saw that I didn't have the correct video jack: my nVidia video card has 2 DVI exists, where as the projector had an VGA entrance... so I took a taxi home, and brought the adaptor. But, the jury (made out of teachers) wasn't even paying attention to my project. So, I took 4th place and I didn't qualify (at a difference of 0,25 points of 10).

National contest

But I went to the national phase, because the guy on the 3rd place retired. So, after a 12-hour journey by train, with a stop in Bucharest, me, Ionut and Bogdan arrive in Focsani. Then, we took a bus, because Galaciuc is situated in a remote forest.

There, all the contestants were coding. We were allowed to fine-tune our apps for one day. So everybody was debugging, or adding extra-lines to their apps, in the pavilion: it was the only place were we had internet... at about 2 KB/s (when it was not windy). And the other problem were the power cords... there were not enough holes to plug them in... so if you ever come to Galaciuc, an extension cord is a must.

But the general atmosphere is very cool: 100 geeks, every one of them with a laptop, coding in different languages and talking about the same things. We even had a quiz night, when we stayed until 3 a.m. and answered different logic puzzles played pantomime.

Not much to say here... I left the most important thing to code, in the last day: "the algorithm"... so I didn't manage to finish in time, and, well, the jury didn't like it. So I got the 11th place (not bad for my first contest)... you can see the rankings here.

The experience of the contest is wonderful... it's like a Yahoo! Open Hack, but for 7 days. So I want to thank again the organisers for making this camp possible... and I better get working on the project for the next year :-).

Summer Holiday 2011 - Munich

What a holiday and how many things to tell about (only in English from today). First I went to Munich with Europe Direct Valcea, then I participated at InfoEducatie contest in Galaciuc, then I went 10 days with the scouts to the National Jamboree, and finally went to Botosani for GrepIT contest. So, I'll start with the trip to Munich.

Europe Direct

For those who don't know, Europe Direct is an European project, with it's headquarters in the Central Library of Ramnicu-Valcea, which is helping us understand EU laws, etc. Europe Direct Valcea is a little special, because there are teen volunteers who help. These volunteer get points and by that, they are rewarded every year. I got my points for redesigning the website and for coding the "points manangement system".

The departure

Well, this was not the happiest departure: I was very careless about the hour of the departure, so I marked in my calendar 8 a.m... unfortunately it was 7 a.m., so I was called at about 6:50, and rushed to the bus. There, I found that I didn't have my ID card: I left it the night before in the Xerox. So, again, please excuse me.

The gang

We were about 50 persons in the group: the majority were librarians from Valcea, Arges and Dambovita libraries, and 8 volunteers from Europe Direct.

Gyor

We arrived late (about 9 p.m.) in Gyor, second largest city from Hungary. The hotel was positioned near the inner city, so we went to a walk. We could only see a big cathedral, full cafes and some teenagers.

Munich - 1st day

Hmm... I think the first day we went to shopping on Marienplatz. I didn't buy anything (I was still upset about the forgotten ID card).

Munich - 2nd day

We visited the Munich Science museum in the morning... and I tell you... it's fabulous: the most important thing to do if you are a geek like me is to take the elevator (which is a little hidden) to the 5th floor I think, where it happens to be the computer science exhibition: there are replicas of Zuse Z3 (first German computer [electro-mechanical computing]), an UNIVAC (first mass produced computer), and IBM 8074, and others. After staying 2 hours, I visited the rest of the sciences: physics, maths and the New Technology "crystal".

After visiting the museum, we went to Europe Direct Munich, which has it's headquarters in the Munich Library. There we took a tour of the library and stayed at a little conference (it was after the bombing in Norway, and there was a politician which was explaining the situation).

Munich - 3rd day

In the third day we visited the Neuschwanstein Castle. It was a palace built in the 19th century, intended for King Ludwig the 2nd. The sights are amazing and the castle reminds me of Disneyland. Sadly, we couldn't listen to the audio, because the tickets were bought with French language.

Budapest

The last town we visited was Budapest. Here, we took a trip with a boat to visit the city. Then, at about 10 p.m., we went to the inner city on a very fun colored bridge. Then we were amazed to see an open-air nightclub which had the volume of the music at maximum, at 4 a.m. Sadly it was full. Then, on the way to our hotel, we missed the bus about 4 times, so we caught the rising of the sun.

Cupa Izvoarelor Boisoara 2011 - cercetasi

Sincer, dacă cineva mi-ar fi spus că pot rezista deconectat timp de 5 zile, și să mă distrez atât de tare... probabil că nu l-aș fi crezut. Și nici dacă cineva mi-ar fi spus că e foarte bună mâncarea la conservă... și nici că mă voi trezi la ora 7 dimineața, și...

Și să începem să povestim. Boișoara, aflată în Țara Loviștei, e superbă... chiar dacă se ajunge greu + că 5 zile de stat în natură nu se compară cu nimic.

Au participat peste 300 de cercetași: 150 din Vâlcea, iar restul din Iași, Craiova, Suceava, București, Târgu-Jiu, Brașov, și alte județe.

Hike-ul a durat aproximativ 7 ore, și a cuprins 10 checkpoint-uri... dar s-a găsit un deștept să mute un marcaj din dreapta în stânga și am rătăcit vreo 3 ore degeaba. Dar după ce ne-am enervat și am văzut că nu mai avem nicio șansă de câștig, am început chiar să ne distrăm.

Cea mai solicitată parte a corpului a fost gâtul, pentru că mai mereu urlam:

Realizări și obiective 2011 - Review

Acum un an și o săptămână, îmi stabileam obiectivele pentru anul școlar ce a trecut. Uitându-mă din nou peste această listă îmi dau seama că știu doar jumătate din ce mă așteaptă în următoarele 9 luni... probabil de aceea e frumoasă viața.

  E foarte greu ca la un concurs cu mai multe etape să poți participa... așa că am hotărât de la început să mă axez pe meciurile de baschet din weekend.

  8,25... poate la anul va fi mai mare pentru că îmi place analiza

Ce să mai... a fost un an extraordinar... iar vara asta va fi cireașa de pe tort

Yahoo! Open Hack Bucharest - Live Blogging

So, today I'll do some live blogging from the Yahoo Open Hack Bucharest 2011. Because this is my first conference, and I am a little to young for taking part of a team, I will try to get some opinions about the conference.

Arrival 21:43

I arrived here, in about 20 mins from the metro station... teams are all heated up, and hacking. I see a hell a lot of laptops, and a lot of sketches with software and other geek kinds... I'm going to take a road trip between the teams, to see their status, and take some pics. (oh, and the organization is really cool)

The organizers

I've spoken to the organizers: they think that the conference is doing real great... about 370 people arrived today, and they expect another 400 tomorrow (including tech talk). They said that the interest of devs in Bucharest for this event... I personally think this is the biggest tech event ever happened in Romania. Also the Yahoo! brand is very well seen in Romania... and they are delighted to bring this event here. Oh, and I lost the title of the youngest boy to come here... another little boy has stollen it... maybe next time. :-)

The Chief

Just talked to Dom, the guy who rulls everything onstage. Every tech thing is in parameters, and there are no problems. A little situation appeared early today, when 300 people tried to connect to the internet at the same time, and there were some nasty problems... now everything is smooth and silk. Oh, and he said that there are here more people then London Open Hack... 1-0 for Romania.

The Pizza

I was hungry... so the food appeared just on time. I've talked to a freelancer that told me he is very happy with the way that things go around: his team is doing a project which captures pictures from Flickr or an Android device, and says if the people are happy or not. Nice idea, but difficult to implement. And now Eurovision is on the big screen :-).

A little fun

The game room is awesome: pool, table soccer, ping-pong and they even have a Wii and a Xbox Kinect. There were some guys stretching their muscles after, but it was quite empty (I think everybody is working). Oh, and there is a "quiet room": things are so quiet there I didn't have courage to enter because my breath would have disturbed the guys there.

Doodle Robot

So the first team I have just interviewed didn't have a name, but they have a name for their robot: DoodleBot. What does it do ?! Well, you paint a doodle, and it walks as the doodle: if you do a heart, it will walk as a heart. The core of the software is a packet sniffer built in C++, that takes the coordinates of the doodle, and transmits them to the robot. This is fun !

Arduino Card Scanner

The next guys I've talked to are using an Arduino board and a RFID scanner for cards... the nifty thing is that the cards are as small as a penny. The next interesting feature is wireless internet, and the two guys were thinking what to do next. I wish them luck.

Talk about Olympiads

One of the guys who was working with the Arduino came and spoke to me. They have greater ideas then I've expected. They will build a 3D model of a building, and use a Yahoo! Maps API: when the cards will be used for login, they will pinpoint the location on the map. The guy was from Iasi (in the upper part of Romania [we are at the bottom]). We had a little discussion about why high-school computer science sucks (yeah, nobody here is using advanced algorithmics) and about computer science national olympiads (dynamic programming with MLE, or undeclared variables that make a 100 points program worth 0). Now, he is trying to understand a library that the guy who coded it commented: //TO DO: make it work.

The VIP table

I've made the mistake to confuse the organizing crew with a team... but they were hacking on something. So I talked to Read who was unhappy that his display doesn't communicate with his NodeJS server. He is currently working at Yahoo! on the YUI, typically using NodeJs. He loves this technology, and I personally think this is the future: being able to write the same language in front-end an back-end is a big + for every dev team. Yahoo's staff is great, can't wait to talk to someone else. Oh, ETA 13 hours till end :-).

Just in Time - Guitar chord recognition and search

I've met some guys from Timisoara which think totally out of the box. Their plan: so you have a guitar, and you know some of the chords of a song, and want to play all of it. You only have to play the chords you know, and their app will interpret the chords, "spell" them in the Yahoo! Search, and find the whole tabulator of your song. Totally awesome idea, but very very tricky: you have to interpret the frequencies correctly, and you never know what happens on the stage. I hope they will rock on the stage.

Tequila Worms

So how about a retro snake/worms game... just for modern days. The team which I spoke to want to build a big map, with a lot of worms in it, controlled by a whole lot of people. With NodeJs on their side (server) and HTML5 on their other side (Canvas 2D specifically) they want to build a Massive Multiplayer Online Worms Eating Game. The idea is promising, but I couldn't see a worm moving around, nor a worm appealing graphic. With the clock ticking, can they really finish their project in time ?! (I think I am starting to get this blogging thing :))

Y!vents

A more practical approach from a younger team: a system where you pinpoint your new events on a Y!Map with date, time, etc. and you're this sends an update to tour Yahoo! Profile, sets your Yahoo! Messenger status message with the name of the event and the link, and possibly it will send an update to your friends on messenger (a little tech problem 'cuz some people "normally" have 1400 friends). They also will implement an after-event feedback mode. In only 12 hours, we will see if this will run without errors.

Asimov - AntiSocial movie rating system

So everybody today is social: you give ratings, share them, look for other shared ratings. But where is an old fashion database ?!? The guys who I last spoke with were writing an app for a Windows Phone 7. On the server, they've built from a free open online database, a rating system, based upon the current ratings for producers, actors, directors and so on. So, they think that they will predict what will be the rating of future movies, by only seeing the crew. It's a typical old school "maths" approach, on a radical new Metro UI theme... the only drawback they say it is Silverlight on WP7 because it is "half implemented". Oh, they also said that they will try to get the info through YQL. And they also recommend not to use the services of Ibis Hotel: their expensive, and they charge extra for parking.

Tired people and other projects

I think there is a general "fatigue" which propagates like a worm in the Yahoo! Open Hack network. The last people I've spoken to didn't impress me very much: 2 guys are trying to use oAuth to get the location, and display near buildings and important monuments, another team didn't want to tell me a lot about their NodeJs project (a in-browse game), and the last guy I've spoken to said that he helped a lot other teams, but he hasn't managed to work on his project: a product timeline, that uses YQL to bring a database of advertisings, and display them.

Back online - Hack RFID

I took a nap... it feels so good no that I can run around the entire complex 10 times... but it's cold outside now so I am going to present you the next team I've spoken to: Hack RFID. They are building an online app that runs parallel with they're RFID card readers (which btw, they've said that phones can be used also). So every time you login with the card, your position is transmitted to Facebook, and your status is updated (oh and an annoying beep is issued also... they say that this is a feature). Very fun team, glad to meet team, and I wish them success.

Map.Nt - Traceroute on Yahoo! Maps

This tries to solve a big problem of global networks: it will traceroute a requested packet and pinpoint the servers on a Yahoo! Map. It has a nice history feature, which colors new routers that appear and old routers that disappear. And they said also that the app will say which routes are faster or slower than usual. Hope to see the project running between 2-4 pm today.

Automated Testing App

Ok, so this project is way over my IT knowledge. It is about an app written in Java that takes the CSV output from HP Mercury and IBM Rational Functional Tester, and converts them into a easy human readable log file. The guy said that pro automated testers spend about 3 hours on this type of job, but with his app they spend only 5 mins. And this is the first app I've seen to be finished :-).

Yahoo! Farm

Definitely the most complex project I have seen till now... and with the most chances to win the grand prize. So, the features are: a tree with light LEDs in with - the number of unread mail is the number of lighten LEDs, a windmill which spins as fast as it is shown in Yahoo! Weather from a custom city, three different backgrounds (painted backgrounds) which change as the weather changes, and sheep that enter/exit from a barn as your friends are online on your Yahoo! Messenger (procentually).

Last.FM Top Artists

So, the last guy whom I spoke to has a project involving YQL: it "steals" from the Last.FM database the artists in a 100 mile radius and displays to each user the upcoming contests, also "stolen" from Eventim... a nice idea, but it seems to small, for the other bigger projects.

ScrewTinkode - XSS Worm

The hackest hack of all hacks in the room. They said that they've found an XSS in one of Yahoo's services. An XSS is a Javascript vulnerability that permits the hacker to inject a code into a webpage, and steal the cookies from the victim. Using the cookies, the hacker could log into the victim's account, and do whatever nasty things he wants: swear his relatives, search his mail for important info (as documents/other passwords) or, the cleverest idea, send the XSS to his friends. The worm is actually an automatic sender, used to spread the XSS on the entire Internet. This type of attack, if done with brains, could potentially infect quite a lot of persons. Who won't click a link from your best friend saying "check out my new blonde girlfriend", or a link from his mother "open this for cookies". The boys guaranteed that we will laugh, and have even coded a GUI for this hack. I think it is one of the team with chances to win :-).

Android Flickr Movie Player

This name is invented by me because the app I've just seen is a little complex. It uses speech recognition on an Android device, where you say the name of a song, the song is then sent to the computer, which plays the song, and puts pictures from a Flickr API. Maybe a little too complex.

Kinect Y! Messenger

Upstairs there is a silent team, working on an awesome project. They want to transmit messages on Y! Messenger using the XBox Kinect. The user can configure his own presets, and this is getting pretty promising. I think that if they could get some smiles on our faces using some freaky gestures, they will be a really good contender for the first place.

Link Beam

Seeing this hack, I've had the feeling that Apple should come here and buy it. It's one of those features that when you see it, you think "why didn't those well paid devs thought about it at the first time". The app has a simple base idea: you are browsing a website on your Mac, and want to send it to your iPhone or iPad, to go and read on the couch. Or you see an interesting thing on your iPhone/iPad, want to blog about it, but don't want to write it on the small keyboard. Imagine that you have a button that does this just as one-click. You have to configure an account online, and then bam, you press a button (bookmarklet exactly) and the site you were visiting opens in a new tab on the other device. And it uses push-internet for efficiency. Any Apple dev seeing this ?!?

PIT = Potholes Interactive Traction

Another great idea (at least for Romania). It is known that in every street in Romania there exist at least a pothole. So the guys who built PIT made a nice Android app: when you wait at the queue to cross the pothole, you get your smartphone, enter the app, and your GPS position is sent to the server. The server gathers the data and does a ranking of the most "potholed" streets. Then the mayor (hopefully) will send a team to fix the street. Simple and effective idea.

The BatMail.com

So, some guys felt like Y! Mail could do more, so they've decided to change something in the layout. They've put a "conversation" style option, for people who send a lot of person-to-person mails. They've also added a nice social data sidebar, that uses data mining to gather info about the mail sender. Pretty nice mods :).

My fav presentation was pax with his XSS. After he didn't manage to complete it in front of everyone, he went in front of mr. Crockford (Chief Javascript Architect) and in front of the CTO of Yahoo! and demonstrated them how Yahoo! Pipes is vulnerable to XSS (a complete disclosure here. Curiously, a guy near mr. Crockford was typing really fast on his BlackBerry.
I've presented my cultural hack "Live Blogging", where with the help of my blog and Twitter account I've spreaded this conference. Lastly I thanked Yahoo! Inc. for organizing this event in Romania, and I also thanked the organizing crew, for being at a high level.
Now we are voting for the project we most liked, and the 2nd project we most liked. So my vote is going for... yeah it's secret
While the judge are deliberating, Anil said that this is his 2nd favorite OpenHack (from to 9). And, oh boy, oh boy, Anil has a great voice (sung Abba) and really knows to entertain us.
Game over ladies and gentleman... the winner who is going to the Grand Final is Alexandru Badiu who hacked 3 apps in 24 hours. Congratulations ! A list of all winning hacks can be found here.

De ce spiritul nordic nu funcționează în România – partea 1

Sunt un fan al handbalului… cred că merg la meciurile echipei Oltchim Râmnicu-Vâlcea de aproximativ 5 ani. Și de asemenea, am făcut și eu puțin fotbal și baschet până acum. Așa că voi vorbi despre evoluția echipei, cât timp Anja Andersen a fost antrenoare.

Când am auzit că Anja Andersen vine în România, eram . În primul rând pentru că acest lucru se întâmpla cu două zile înainte de primul meci în Liga Campionilor, iar antrenorul care fusese dat afară nici măcar nu a avut „ocazia de a greși”… tipic românesc.

Pun doar o declarație a ei (dată pe 2 februarie, la primul antrenament):

Vreau să vă văd strălucind pe teren", le-a spus Anja. Le-a întrebat apoi cîte antrenamente fac săptămînal. "Avem cîte două pe zi, cu două excepţii", a venit răspunsul. "E prea mult, a spus Anja. Intervine saturaţia, plictiseala. O să facem cîte patru antrenamente pe săptămînă. Eu vreau să vă fie foame de handbal, să veniţi la mine să mă întrebaţi cînd avem antrenament, să jucaţi handbal din plăcere, nu ca o obligaţie!", le-a spus Andersen.

Deci ea încearcă o mentalitate la antrenament nu de iar trebuie să fug/arunc/fug, ci o mentalitate de când e următorul antrenament să pot arăta că sunt cea mai bună și pot intra în lot. Tactica e interesantă, dar oare poți face o asemenea trecere, într-un timp foarte scurt, și să oferi o asemenea libertate… ?!

Așa că a urmat primul meci, cel contra Buducnost (pe 6 februarie, la 4 zile de la venire), câștigat la limită 21-20. Ce am văzut eu, și cum am simțit eu jocul echipei în general cu Anja Andersen pe bancă:

primul minut, pentru prima dată, apărare om la om … premieră pentru Vâlcea
și nu numai apărarea om la om, ci toată apărarea devenise o muncă de echipă, nu o muncă „pe posturi”
un antrenor care stătea numai pe jos și simțea meciul…
echipa e alta… total alta… cred că schimbase 5-6 jucătoare din lotul normal
Cristina Neagu a jucat prost în atac, dar a fost mereu încurajată… și a rămas în teren aproape tot meciul (se apăra perfect la Bojana Popovic)
cred că pentru a stabili posturile pentru atac, Anja a întrebat „cine unde îi place să joace?” Văzând-o pe Beșe pivot a fost o mare surpriză pentru toată lumea.
foaaarte mult calm, aproape deloc contra-atac, cerut de pe bancă… bineînțeles că pe teren ești împins să dai o pasă luuungă, care poate fi un gol ușor, dar mai mult ca sigur va fi interceptată
atacuri poziționale împinse până la limita timpului… toată lumea ținea de minge, gândea de două ori înainte să dea o pasă
apărare, zâmbete pe bancă și team-work again
Luminița Huțupan pe bancă: WOW în sfârșit cineva a făcut asta… e mama lor
celelalte jucătoare care nu au fost în lot, erau mereu prezente în partea apărării (în afară terenului) și își încurajau echipa
Ozel a fost lovită, jocul nu a fost oprit, iar Anja a intrat imediat în mijlocul terenului, pentru a vedea dacă e ceva grav

Și acum… declarații de la final:

“Avem un început cu un antrenor pe care îl doream de mult, cu o mentalitate foarte puternică. Anja a reuşit să ne facă o echipă adevărată. Am învăţat în 3 zile ceea ce nu am învăţat în toată cariera mea", a spus Steluţa Luca

- Ce aţi făcut propriu-zis în cantonament?
- Nu am făcut antrenamente fizice, dar la finalul zilei eram epuizată. Am avut cîteva discuţii individuale, a vrut să ne cunoască, să afle mai multe de la fiecare. Vreau să spun că ne-am dat seama noi, fetele, că stăm de atîta timp împreună, dar nu ne cunoaştem între noi! Am şi plîns cîteva de emoţie.

Hai să zicem că Steluța Luca a fost luată de val, și că Cristina Neagu nu a avut parte de antrenori care să o „lucreze” pe toate posturile (deși e o foarte bună modalitate de a te pune în pielea coechipierilor și de a înțelege cum îi poți ajuta mai bine). Dar deja Adina Fiera începe să exagereze: adică cum să nu facă abdomene și să alerge… să vorbească ?!? Păi de asta sunt acolo ?!? (sistemul românesc mai are muuult până să învețe ce e aia educație non-formală, sau că noi nu suntem mașini, ci suntem ființe raționale cu sentimente ).

Și apoi, deoarece suntem în România, lumea a început să sară la bârfă: da’ cât e salariul, cât.. cât ?

"Contractul este cu firma daneză. Plătim 20.000 de euro lunar şi aici intră totul. [..] Anja trebuie să fie cam o săptămână pe lună în Danemarca, dar nu consecutiv. Va merge din cînd în cînd. În rest, ea va fi la echipă, va conduce antrenamentele şi va fi antrenor.” a declarat Roibu.

Daneza ar fi vrut să rămînă în România, dar momentan nu poate. Ea are o şcoală de handbal la Copenhaga şi va trebui să meargă trei zile pe săptămînă acolo.

Adică cum: femeia asta vine în România când vrea, ia o căruță de bani, și spune că pe la anul vorbim de Liga Campionilor… și asta pentru un proiect de viitor cu o școală… păi domnilor manageri ce faceți, adică cum să se întâmple așa ceva. (iar tot ironic, continui o discuție auzită în sală)

Și ați văzut domne ce fițe în capul antrenoarei… adică cum să intri pe teren și să vezi dacă i s-a întâmplat ceva jucătoarei: adică a luat și 2 minute eliminare și nu era treaba ei, în sport te mai și lovești. Și ați văzut că Neagu, n-a dat deloc la poartă… adică i-au dat și ăsteia o căruță de bani și nu face nimic. Și Stanca, nici nu a fost pe foaia de joc: inadmisibil domnule ce să mai. Și… și… am crezut că nu mai știu posturile jucătoarelor.

Anja i-a interzis Cristinei Neagu să arunce la poartă pentru că jucătoarea s-a plîns că o doare umărul drept! [..] La final însă, Anja a lăudat-o pe Cristina: "A jucat pentru echipă! A fost cea mai bună de pe teren".

Cînd a aflat că nu va juca, doar cu trei ore înainte, Ionela a izbucnit în plîns. Degeaba s-a dus să-i explice danezei că aşa joacă de opt ani, că nu a mai fost chip să întoarcă decizia. "Am fost chiar revoltat cînd am auzit că nu joacă, dar pînă la urmă contează rezultatul. Asta e filosofia ei, cine nu e apt sută la sută nu joacă", a spus şi preşedintele Ioan Gavrilescu.

Că așa suntem noi românii: când nu înțelegem ceva, pentru că nu suntem obișnuiți, sau că nu ne place, începem să aruncăm pe ici pe colo cu noroi, spunând că nu e bine… că așa-i majoritatea în România… vrea rezultate aici și acum, și fără ca cineva să ne arate cât de ridicat e nivelul nostru de înțelegere al acelui lucru.

Adunarea Generală - Consiliul Național al Elevilor

În perioada 2-6 februarie la București am participat Adunarea Generală a Consiliului Național al Elevilor, unde au participat 240 de oameni din toate județele. Acolo a fost ales noul președinte CNE și s-a votat statutul. Vă propun o recapitulare a articolelor apărute pe CEArena despre acest eveniment.

Scriam în acest articolul despre un concurs de business și antreprenorială, care mi-a sărit în ochi, în timp ce răsfoiam internetul. Am reușit să iau locul 1 la faza națională și m-am calificat la faza internațională la Viena, unde am obținut locul 7. Mai jos puteți vedea o prezentare pe care am realizat-o la Europe Direct Vâlcea în legătură cu evenimentul, și filmulețul cu care am participat la proba pe echipe.

Consiliul Elevilor Arena

Consiliul Elevilor Arena (CEArena) a apărut pe o nevoie cronică a Consiliilor Elevilor din România şi a formaţiunilor asemătătoarea din Republica Moldova. Este o platformă ce publică toate ideile de proiecte, proiecte şi alte ştiri pe care Consiliile Școlare și Județene le au.

Am constat ca toate aceste organizaţii, organisme, din cauza schimbărilor permanente de la conducere, ajung să reinventeze roata. Deşi nu comunică între ele, fac preponderent acelaşi tip de proiecte şi cu toţii se lovesc de aceleaşi probleme. Noi ne-am propus să înlăturăm acestă problemă prin crearea unei baze de date a proiectelor voastre. De cele mai multe ori relaţiile dintre conducerea veche şi cea noua, în cadrul consililui elevilor, se rupe. Cu ajutorul forumului vrem să creăm un program de mentorship şi consiliere, ajutându-ne împreună.

Time Management – Sincronizare mobil & Sarcini

Revin cu al doilea articol, în care vă voi prezenta cum să vă transformați mobilul (care trebuie doar să aibă Bluetooth) în propria voastră secretară care vă spune mereu ce mai aveți de făcut.

Prima sincronizare

Nu vă trebuie decât soft-ul telefonului și un stick de Bluetooth la calculator. În cazul în care nu dispuneți de o conexiune Bluetooth între dispozitiv și PC, puteți utiliza și un cablu de date, dar acest lucru dăunează grav mobilității, Fiecare producător de telefoane are propria aplicație de sincronizare, care după ce a fost instalată, permite conectarea mobilului, și sincronizarea acestuia cu Outlook. Nu voi detalia deloc această operație, deoarece este foarte simplă de realizat.

sarcini

Mereu eram ultimul în a face ceva… aduceam banii pentru o culegere în ultima zi, uitam că trebuie să aduc o carte, uitam că se schimbă orarul… nu țineam minte aproape nimic.

Apoi am început cu un blocnotes… unde notam fiecare lucru de făcut.. dar din păcate, l-am pierdut sau uitat pe undeva. Așa că am început să notez pe mobil, și am descoperit că vechiul meu Nokia 6230i are Tasks. Apoi am văzut că are și alarme pentru sarcini… perfect pentru a-mi readuce aminte că am de dat de mâncare la câini

Outlook Tasks

Meniul principal Tasks, din stânga jos al Outlook nu e chiar așa strălucit. Nu afișează decât o listă în ordinea timpului a sarcinilor.

Mai multe opțiuni

Cea mai importantă opțiune după părerea mea este „Importance”. Pe mobil le sortez mereu astfel încât sarcinile cu prioritate mai mare să apară primele. Și credeți-mă, acuma e vacanță și n-am decât 5 chestii de făcut, dar lista ajunsese la 24 în timpul proiectului Let’s do it Romania.

Apoi urmează alarmele (reminders). Ce m-aș face eu fără ca telefonul să urle seara să pun culegerea aia de mate în ghiozdan. Apoi mai sunt și categoriile (aceleași de la calendare), iar recurențele deși o funcție deșteaptă, nu le-am găsit încă rostul.

Planificare săptămânală

În fiecare zi de duminică, îmi planific următoarea săptămână în felul acesta:

În bara din dreapta sarcinile sunt organizate în ordinea priorității. Glisez (Drag&Drop) fiecare sarcină în ziua în care cred eu că voi lucra la ea, iar aceasta îmi apare acolo, și ziua scadentă la ea mi se schimbă. Astfel îmi pot organiza mai bine lucrurile de făcut în următoarea săptămâna.

Contactele și notele

Printre cele mai mari beneficii ale sincronizării cu mobilul o reprezintă și backup-ul contactelor din telefon. De asemenea, eu folosesc notele din telefon pentru a păstra acea informație de care am nevoie în 5 secunde, ca de exemplu programul autobuzului.

Time Management – Outlook & Calendar

În această serie de articole voi încerca să prezint metoda mea de organizare a timpului, cea mai importantă resursă a noastră, folosind Microsoft Outlook, pe care o folosesc de aproape 4 ani și care m-a ajutat să îmi pun viața în ordine.

PROLOGUE

Înainte de a aplica sistemul acesta uitam aproape toate lucrurile care trebuia să le fac, și nu știam nici măcar ce am de făcut în următoarele două săptămâni. Apoi, puțin câte puțin, am început să mă organizez și acum am planuri fixe pe următoarele 2 luni .

Deși voi scrie în mare parte despre timp, voi dedica și un articol despre organizarea informației și organizarea comunicării.

LUCRURI NECESARE

Office 2007/2010 care să conțină Outlook și Onenote (disponibil aici)
Windows Vista/7 – merge și XP, dar are unele funcții în minus

Deși sunt fan open-source, la capitolul de management Outlook bate de departe Mozilla Thunderbird & Lightning ,iar Onenote este superior Evernote (dar dacă vrei, poți folosi și aceste aplicații gratuite).

SCURTĂ PREZENTARE

Microsoft Outlook – majoritatea lumii o cunoaște ca o aplicație de e-mail… greșit! Modulul de e-mail reprezintă doar 20% din ce face. Aplicația vine și cu module pentru: calendar, contacte, sarcini și note simple. Aceste module se pot sincroniza cu un telefon mobil, dar despre toate acestea mai încolo.

Microsoft Onenote – este o agendă virtuală. Poți lua notițe, pe diferite teme, pe care mai apoi le organizezi în ce structură vrei tu, și care devin „căutabile”.

Să pornim outlook

De la început aplicația ne cere să adăugăm un cont de e-mail. Putem sări peste această operație, voi reveni mai târziu la organizarea poștei electronice (apăsăm Next, apoi selectăm No, și la sfârșit bifăm căsuța cu Continue, și Finish). Ca un pont, mai adăugam o bară laterală în dreapta, din meniul View, selectăm To-Do Bar și apoi Normal.

Și apoi trecem la Calendar, unde începem să adăugăm diferite programări (appointments). Pentru o adăugare facilă recomand selectarea Week, din meniul Arrange. Apoi selectam intervalul orar în care avem programarea, click dreapta, New Appointment, și adăugăm numele.

Eu am de obicei scris în calendar orarul de la școală, antrenamentele de la baschet, ședințele de la LEO și Consiliul Elevilor, programările la dentist, etc. Există și posibilitatea de a crea programări pentru o zi întreagă, cum am creat eu „Schi Rânca”.

Dar unele programări se repetă lunar, alte săptămânal, iar unele de 3 ori pe săptămână. Băieții de la Microsoft au gândit treaba asta, iar noi putem adăuga recurențe la fiecare programări. Trebuie doar să dați dublu-click pe un appointment, să selectați butonul „Recurrence”, și apoi să selectați ritmul. Recomand stabilirea și unei date de final. De exemplu pentru orar, sfârșitul anului școlar: V 17.06.2011. Altă chestie deșteaptă e posibilitatea ștergerii sau modificării unui appointment, fără a afecta întreaga recurență (se selectează delete/modify this occurence)

O altă funcție deșteaptă din Outlook o reprezintă categoriile. Acestea sunt valabile atât pentru calendar, cât și pentru celelalte module (mail, contacte, sarcini). În principiu singurul lucru care se întâmplă este atașarea unei culori fiecărui appointment. Dar rezultatul după ce se întâmplă acest lucru este o imagine mai bine conturată a programului:

Pentru a edita toate categoriile, click dreapta pe o programare, Categorize, apoi All Categories. Nu există un model clar pentru aceste categorii, dar părerea mea e că ele trebuie să reprezinte elemente clar separate dintr-un program general. Lista mea de categorii este aceasta:

Din câte puteți observa sunt și lucruri concrete (Business=Școală, LEO, Consiliu), dar și abstracte (Voluntariat, Personal, Informatică).

Evenimentele de asemenea au și o opțiune „Show as”, care permite setarea opțiunilor:

free = folosesc la diferite recurențe anuale, cum ar fi ziua de naștere a cuiva, sau la emisiunile TV
tentative = folosesc pentru evenimente de mai multe zile, întâlniri care nu sunt 100% că merg la ele, sau evenimente pe care le pun „All day” deși știu că vor avea un interval orar de desfășurare
busy = restul
out of office = vacanțe, weekend-uri când sunt plecat

Folosirea acestei opțiuni duce la o mai bună vizualizare lunară (meniul View –> Month)

De asemenea telefoanele inteligente permit selectarea profilurilor silent/general pentru sonerie după programările din calendar. Dar asta după ce vom realiza o sincronizare în următorul articol.

Lucruri de sfârșit

Outlook vine predefinit cu alarme la fiecare programare. Pentru a le scoate File –> Options –> Calendar –> Default Reminders. Dar nu uitați să setați câte un remind cu o zi înainte când e ziua unui prieten.

De asemenea fiecare programare are alți 2 parametri: locația, pe care o folosesc de exemplu la meciurile de baschet se scriu orașul, și corpul programării, unde de exemplu scriu ce am de zis la o ședință CJE.

Noul design Facebook – cum să îl ai

Și uite că în sfârșit avem un update de la Facebook, la cele mai vizitate pagini, cele de profil. Mi se par mult orientate spre cunoașterea de prieteni noi pentru că se „descoperă” mult mai multe informații personale. Schimbarea profilului se obține foarte ușor și sunt necesare doar 2 click-uri.

Se intră pe una bucată link http://www.facebook.com/about/profile/, și se apasă botonu’ verde. Chiar dacă nu vă place, schimbarea oricum se va petrece în curând.

Cel mai mult îmi place separarea sporturilor și artelor de celelalte activități, și iubesc secțiunea „People Who Inspire You” și mai ales listele din stânga care îți permit să clasifici prietenii (exemplu la mine: LEO, baschet, colegi, etc.)

Urăsc în schimb paragraful ăla succint scris mic, despre limbile pe care le vorbesc, locul unde m-am născut, meseria pe care o am, bla bla bla.

Per total, profilele mi se par mult mai haioase și colorate.

Consiliul Elevilor

În ultima lună, am trecut de la a nu știi nimic despre această organizație, până la a sta de vorbă cu alți membri din județe ca Prahova sau Teleorman, despre strategia și planul de acțiune al Consiliului Național.

Așa că voi încerca o scurtă prezentare a ceea ce este și ce face acest consiliul, pentru noi toți elevii.

Cine e Consiliul Elevilor ?

O organizație, parteneră a Ministerului Educației, formată doar din elevi, care lucrează pentru elevi. În statutul nostru (aprobat de ministru) scrie că trebuie să dezvoltăm democrația și asociativitatea dintre elevi, dar nu numai. În primul rând suntem o voce a tuturor elevilor pe care îi reprezentăm. Dar asta nu înseamnă că suntem un sindicat care vrem ~~salarii~~ note mai mari pentru elevi.

Cum intru și eu ?

Ești deja membru în consiliu. Ai votat un șef de clasă (în mod democratic sper), pe care l-ai desemnat să participe la ședințele Consiliului Școlar al Elevilor. Apoi, în școala ta au avut loc niște alegeri unde au fost aleși un președinte și 2-3 vice-președinți. Care acești elevi s-au dus mai departe în Consiliul Județean al Elevilor. Unde iar au fost niște alegeri și s-a ales Biroul Executiv al Elevilor, elevi membri în Consiliul Regional al Elevilor. Și în acest consiliu au avut loc niște alegeri, și mai departe urmează Consiliul Național și am terminat.

Păi și dacă tot sunteți atât de mulți oameni, ce naiba faceți prin consiliile alea ?

Muncim… unii mai mult, alții mai puțin… fiecare după puteri și după voință.

Da’ concret… ce faceți ?

Păi… în primul rând lipsim de la niște ore de școală. Ăsta e primul lucru care se observă. Apoi avem niște ședințe… pe care trebuie să le conducem… unde propunem proiecte noi, votăm moțiuni, unde evaluăm membri, unde încercăm să facem niște lucruri să meargă acolo unde scârțâie. Mereu primim câte ceva de la Consiliul Național, chestii care trebuie implementate în județul nostru, în școala noastră, în alte școli care nu au încă consilii funcționale.
Apoi mai avem treburi interne: informarea permanentă a elevilor, aflarea problemelor și găsirea de soluții, comunicarea permanentă cu consilierul educativ și profii, parteneriate cu ONG-uri și autorități locale, etc.

Și eu pot să vă ajut ?

DA ! În primul rând poți veni la ședințele Consiliului Școlar, să vezi ce facem în timpul nostru liber. Apoi dacă îți place, și vrei să te implici ca să schimbi ceva, orice ceva, oricât de mic sau mare, există un loc și pentru tine în echipa noastră.

Și eu ce primesc dacă vă ajut ?

Același lucruri pe care le primim și noi: sentimentul că ai făcut ceva spre schimbare, că ai făcut ceva să ajuți pe elevii din școala/județul/țara ta, experiența de a lucra între-o echipă, între-o organizație, și… dacă dovedești că ești capabil… experiența de a fi lider.

Concurs de business „EBC*L Champions League”

Un fel de campionat european de economie, antreprenorială și competențe în afaceri.

Înscrierea e gratis, proba preliminară e pe internet, iar dacă aveți un pic de cunoștințe despre bilanț, costuri, active și alte definiții, poate puteți să obțineți ca mine un bilet la faza națională la București. Apoi aveți șansa la o tabără „Engleza în Afaceri” și faza finală, care se desfășoară la Viena.

Am primit acum o lună un mail în care aflam despre concursul ăsta. Prima meu gând: un fel de ECDL în business, dar concurs, și nu examen --- ce idee faină. Hai să văd dacă mă uit degeaba la TV, la Radu Soviani pe The Money Chanel și la Moise Guran, de la BizBazar.

Apoi am dat testul… aproximativ 50 de puncte din 100 – hai că nu sunt așa de bun pe cât mă credeam. Și am uitat…

De dimineață am primit un mail:

Te invitam sa participi la Competiția EBC*L Champions League - Faza Naționala, ce se va desfășura la București in data de 27.11.2010.

Nu am crezut din prima așa că am dat un telefon și am aflat:

concursul este în parteneriat cu Comisia Europeană
nu trebuie să ai obligatoriu un certificat EBC*L să poți participa la faza națională
premiile astea sunt pe bune

Așa că dacă vă pasionează economia și business-ul, vă recomand cu căldură acest concurs. Nu știi niciodată, când te poți califica mai departe.

Rock FM

Sau cum am reusit sa organizez, impreuna cu Andrei Ivanescu si Izabela Cernatescu, vreo 350 de oameni... In aceasta pagina de jurnal voi incerca sa va prezint cum s-au desfasurat ultimele 2-3 saptamani, in care am reusit sa organizez proiectul Let's do it Romania, in judetul meu Valcea.

Prologue

Auzisem de proiect dinaite... de la RadioLynx prima data, apoi de pe Twitter si din alte surse. Mi s-a parut o idee extrem de buna, mai ales ca nu prea au mai fost organizate astfel de activitati. So... am intrebat prin oras daca a auzit cineva de chestia asta... si nimeni n-a raspuns "Da". Deci aveam o idee clara atuncea: e ceva mare, dar nimeni in Valcea nu se ocupa de el.

The Encounter

Ma aflam la prima mea sedinta LEO. Dupa ce ne-am prezentat, buna-ziua, handshake, etc., a intervenit Andrei Ivanescu, cel ce avea mai tarziu sa-mi fie lider in proiect. Problema a fost clara de la inceput: noi nu prea avem nimic de la Bucuresti, decat sprijin, asa ca trebuie sa ne organizam. Asa ca am acceptat, eu vrand pe parte de IT si umpic pe organizare.

The Meeting

In timp ce ii cautam lui Dani Glodeanu cadou de ziua lui, primesc un telefon de la Andrei, in care imi spune sa ne intalnim, pentru a discuta despre participarea mea.

Asa ca pe la ora 2, la Boromiru' de langa mall, incepem sa vorbim despre stadiul actual si ce mai e de facut. Treaba pe care am inteles-o suna simplu: eu trimit/primesc mail-uri si incerc sa organizez lumea care vrea sa se inscrie. Cine naiba se gandea ca vor fi atatia oameni, sau voi avea atatea telefoane de dat.

Incepem munca

Primele "misiuni" au avut un caracter de contact. A trebuit sa sun niste "persoane resursa", din Dragasani si Ocnele Mari, sa le prezint proiectul, si daca vor sa ni se alature. Am primit doua refuzuri, deci... mission failed.

Doua telefoane de la "Central"

Primul venit, de la lidera noastra de la Cluj. Il primesc intr-o vineri, cand ma indreptam la Europe Direct. Gratiela, lidera noastra de pe atunci de la distanta, dorea sa se asigure ca eu mi-am inteles rolul, si ce am de facut. M-am balbait putin, dar i-am zis increzator ca ma voi descurca

Al doilea telefon de la Bucuresti, de la o alta lidera. Defapt, discutia asta a fost si cea mai interesanta. Eu cand am vorbit cu Andrei despre LDIR (Let's do it Romania), mi s-a spus ca voi avea un cont, acces la intranetul lor, unde voi putea descarca adresele de e-mail ale celor care s-au inscris, voi avea acces si la documente, si la harta. Dar in apelul asta, mi se spunea ca nu am 18 ani, si ca nu mi se va face cont. Super !!! Nu am primit niciodata un refuz pe motivul asta, dar e un inceput. Oricum nu a contat foarte mult, m-am descurcat si fara.

First E-Mail

In data de 18 septembrie am trimis primul email, catre cei care s-au inscris. Am primit de la Bucuresti un model: scria ca fiecare om trebuie sa aiba manusi la el si o rola de 120L de saci de gunoi. WTF !!! Asa ca ne apucam sa il modificam cu datele care le aveam atuncea: 15 microbuze, aveam sponsorizare de apa, saci, gunoi, etc. Pe la ora 8, mail-ul deja sosise la vreo 40 lideri de echipa.

Big problems

Incepep sa primesc intrebari la care nu aveam raspuns de genu': unde ne intalnim, la ce ora, cat timp dureaza, etc. Inafar' de astea eu, din cauza sistemului national informatic complex, nu aveam cati membri are fiecare echipa. Asa ca am rugat ca fiecare lider de echipa sa-mi transmita cati membri are... si n-am primit decat de la 10%.

Apoi primesc o informatie de la Andrei: nu avem decat 3 autobuze de 140 persoane de la ETA. Genial !!! Ce se intampla cu voluntarii ??? Intervine o noua idee: Hai sa facem Malul Alb !!!

Cu 2 zile inainte de ziua Z

Cu toate informatiile terminate, trimitem si al doilea mail, unde trecem locul unde ne intalnim, la o sala din Consiliul Judetean. Pana la aceasta data aveam aproximativ 60% din voluntari inscrisi pe site confirmati. Ne asteptam sa fie in jur de 300 de oameni pe 25 septembrie.

Nota autorului: cred ca nu am dormit deloc in ultimele nopti. Sau adormeam dupa ce ma gandeam vreo 2 ore la ce se va intampla.

Ziua Z

Trezirea la 7:05... PLOUA !!! Ce naiba chiar azi ?!?!?1 Intru pe link-ul meu secret despre vreme... ce bine nu ploua mult. Se uda voluntarii putin si gata.

Ajung pe la 8 si 20 la Consiliul Judetean. Asteptau deja vreo 2 lideri de echipa. La 8:40 intram in sala de consiliu', impreuna cu domnul Ion Rusu de la Consiliul Judetean, care ne-a sprijinit si ajutat extraordinar de mult pe tot parcursul zilei. Pe la 9 fix deja erau 10-15 de lideri. Munca mea era de colectare a declaratiilor minorilor, si sa vad cine si din partea cui veneau.

9:30 --- muuuuulta lume. De unde naiba venisera toti ?!?!?!?! Majoritatea intrebau cand plecam, ce facem. Bineinteles am avut si cereri de manusi si saci, de la doua scoli care vroiau sa plece mai devreme. Noi le ziceam ca trebuie sa astepte, ei nu ca ii asteapta copii... incepem sa devenim incordati.

10:00 --- nu plecasera inca... mai aveam niste voluntari minori care nu aveau declaratii asa ca a trebuit sa mergem sa printam cateva. Lumea tot astepta !!!

10:10 --- cobor jos... incepuse mai tare ploaia... lumea urca in autobuze... NU !!! Pe rand... trebuie cu fiecare cu liderul lui. Iau repede 5-6 numere de telefon de la persoane de incredere (profesori in principal) si incep sa se urce. Se auzeau deja voci ca autobuzele nu sunt bune (cu ETA merg si eu acasa)

Nota autorului: pe aceasta cale imi cer scuze daca nu am salutat pe cineva atunci. Chiar alergam sa vad cine se urca in autobuz.

10:15 --- autobuzele pleaca cu destinatia Malul Alb ---- URAA !!! Am scapat

Celula de criza

Eram foarte fericit ca plecase lumea... dar de-abia acum incepea greul. Lucram pe 4 fronturi: Malul Alb cu cei mai multi, Baile Olanesti cu un microbuz de 15 persoane, jandarmii la Sirineasa si voluntari individuali din Cheia.

Trebuiau toti liderii sunati si intrebati ce fac, cum se simt... sa vada ca nu i-am trimis si lasat acolo. Asa ca pe la 10:30 incep... prima data cu persoanele din primul autobuz: domnu' Liviu din Lahovary, doamna Brezai din Peda', etc. Apoi al doilea..., cei din Baile Olanesti... in total vreo 10 persoane

In tot acest timp am avut si ceva incidente cu cineva din Dragasani care nu stia pe unde trece Dacos-ul si cu primaria din Govora... Andrei si Izabela erau cu urechile lipite de telefoane.

A 2a tura de telefoane: lumea nu prea mai avea saci. Ne hotaram sa trimitem un microbuz. Dar...

Primesc o comanda de la Andrei: "10 voluntari, baieti, peste 18 ani, sa mearga in zona strand". Eu raspund dupa 2 minute: "am 2 baieti, si 10 fete". El: "hai ca am trimis microbuzul, dar sper ca le stii pe fete". Eu: "Da, dar ele au vrut".

The Comeback

Operatiune de recuperare a voluntarilor implica un singur obiectiv: toata lumea acasa. Pe la 13:00 incep sa sun a 3a oara: ne apropiam de final... Sun primul sofer al autobuzului sa ii dau plecarea, apoi din nou sun toti liderii sa-i anunt ca a plecat primul autobuz, dar asteapta si al doilea. Sun apoi lumea din primul autobuz, dupa ce am aflat ca iesisera din Fedelesoiu: "ne inghesuim putin, dar merge".

Peste 15 minute dau verde si celui de-al doilea autobuz. Dupa ce consider ca a plecat de la Malul Alb il sun: "cati voluntari ati adunat ?"... raspuns: "doar 8 dom'le. Dar nu cred ca au mai ramas."

The Report Room

Cu cei mai multi voluntari acasa... eram cel mai fericit... scapasem de telefoane. Nu mai erau decat voluntarii din Baile Olanesti, care au gasit o hartie de 50 de lei printre mormane, si cei din Cheia care au continuat sa munceasca. Dar incepusera sa sune mai tare telefoanele lui Andrei si Izabela: gunoiul trebuia ridicat din tot judetul de masinile Urban-ului.

Poate cel mai frumos moment al actiunii, a fost cand au inceput sa soseasca voluntarii la consiliu'. Toti erau murdari, obositi, cu tricourile negre, dar veneau zambind. A fost extraordinar sa vezi oameni cu zambetul pe buze, venind sa ne multumeasca si sa glumeasca cu noi, iar la intrebarea v-ati distrat ?, primeam mereu un raspuns de se auzea pana la etaju' 7 al consiliului.

End Hours

Am facut un raport preliminar cu toti voluntarii care au fost la Consiliu: 65 de echipe cu 350 de voluntari in total. Andrei tot vorbea la telefon cu domnu' de la Urban sa ridice tot gunoiul... eram toti obositi. Plecam acasa fericiti, ca am reusit sa terminam treaba, si proiectul s-a sfarsit bine. Seara mai vorbim despre niste idei legate de diplome si cum a decurs treaba.

Duminica

Pe la 8:00 am examen la centru' de excelenta de mate. Nu prea stiu nimica, dar nu conteaza. Stiam ca reusise proiectul

Emisiune VTV

Si chiar cand credeam ca totul se terminase... ca in povesti... am primit un telefon de la Izabela luni dimineata: "Alex vezi ca azi de la 18:00, aparem pe VTV. Am nevoie de 3 voluntari care sa vina." CE ?!?!

Prima reactie normala e refuzul. M-am gandit clar ca 3 voluntari nu pot multumi pe toata lumea care a fost. Andrei nu a vrut sa vina, deci eram eu, cu Izabela si... inca 4 oameni: sa fim 6 in total, vorbeste cu 3, apoi pauza, apoi echipa a II-a. Dar cine ?! Profesori sau elevi ?!

Dupa ce am terminat de sunat, lista arata asa: nici un profesor nu acceptase, si aveam 4 elevi: o fata studenta care fusese la Baile Olanesti, o fata din Energetic din cls a X-a, Catalina Jugravescu din Lahovary si Andreea Titoiu, colega mea din Mircea, ambele a XII-a. Deci, eram singurul baiat.

Habar nu aveam ce trebuie sa fac la o emisiune, sau cine e moderatorul, sau ce trebuie sa spun, sau cu ce ma imbrac... orice...

3...2...1... LIVE

Inainte de emisiune, vorbim cu moderatorul, domnul Roua. Despre ce am vorbit ?! Aproape nimic despre proiect, sau despre ce vom vorbi in emisiune. El era interesat de atitudinea tinerilor de astazi... sau de gandurile lor... la asta nu ma asteptam. Eram atata de emotionat... nici la meciul de baschet in care am batut in care conduceam cu un punct si erau ultimele 10 secunde nu mi s-a intamplat sa imi bata atat de tare inima.

Si suntem la 18:00 fix in direct. Naiba stia daca sa ma uit in camera sau la cine vorbeste. Incepem sa discutam despre proiect. Eu eram ala cu numerele: 350... 1500... 35%... neinteresant pentru moderator. Incepem sa vorbim despre atitudinea celor care fac gunoaie. Incepem cu "cei 7 ani de acasa", continuam cu povesti despre aruncat gunoaie. Mai discutam despre "verdeȚ apoi vine o intrebare:

- Esti olimpic la informatica ?
- Da, am participat la nationala.
- Si ce ai luat ?

Chiar nu vroiam sa spun... a se intelege ca ma laud... DA am bronz... dar nu despre asta suntem aici sa vorbim. Ii raspund ca la televizor, balbait: "Am bronz... dar la anul sper sa iau aur."

A urmat apoi o discutie interesanta: daca m-au ajutat matematica si informatica. Asta mi-a placut cel mai mult. Trece apoi la un subiect care cred ca i-a placut lui cel mai mult: voluntariatul patriotic ?!?! WTF !!! Eu nici nu eram pe atuncea... ce vrei sa zic... ma balbai, dar reusesc sa imi aduc ceva ce discutasem cu tata acum 3 luni, pe cand am decis sa ma apuc serios de volunteering.

Dar se mai fumeaza in scoli ?, sunt intrebat. Chiar asta va intereseaza ??! De ce n-ati chemat pe cineva din... cei care fumeaza. Raspund frumos ca generatiile care vin nu sunt atat de impertinente, si se vede in o schimbare in comportamentul tinerilor.

Apoi o intrebare care ma loveste in plin: ce idoli ai tu ?! De unde a venit asta ? Izabela incepe sa povesteasca despre profa ei de muzica de la facultate... eu... mama si tata. Si chiar mi-a iesit bine. Puteam sa vorbesc despre: Cristian Sima, Tudor Chirila sau chiar... Bill Gates. Dar nu iesea la fel de bine.

PAUZA

Gata! Am iesit... viu chiar. E momentu' ala cand stii chiar ca s-a terminat. Mergem in regie sa discutam. Eram destul de multumiti de cum a decurs totul. Ne uitam si la ceilalti cum vorbesc, si incep sa-mi bag nasul prin regie pe acolo. La sfarsitul emisiunii ramanem la o mica "barfa" in fata sediului VTV.

Aftermath

Sunt intrebat cand primeste lumea diplomele. Raspuns: "In Curand". Voi incepe sa merg prin scoli sa le ofer celor care au participat, si sa incerc sa le multumesc tuturor personal.

Multumiri

As pune o lista cu toti, dar sunt decat 350. Asa ca le voi multumi doar colegilor mei de echipa Andrei si Izabela, pentru ca am muncit cot la cot timp de 2 saptamani pentru a realiza ceva in care nimeni nu a crezut ca va iesi bine, decat noi.

3 zile cuTIA - partea I

În acest weekend am participat la un curs de ”Metode si instrumente de educatie nonformala in contextul programului”

Poate numele e ciudat, și nici nu mă așteptam la ceva interesant. Recunosc că motivul principal pentru care am mers e că a zis dna Dana de la Europe Direct să mergem... să mergem... să... Iar al doilea motiv a fost să scap de școală. DAR... a fost mega-ultra-super incintant. Nu ne-am plictisit deloc și cred că am învățat niște chestii super deștepte. Acum mă oftic că trebuia să scriu de la început în fiecare zi ce s-a întâmplat. Dar vă voi prezenta în continuare ce îmi aduc aminte.

Day 1

Începem pe la ora 3. Mă întâlnesc cu prietenii de la Europe Direct, cei pe care îi știam. Eram un grup de vreo 30 de persoane. Ca să înțelegeți cât de serios a fost cursul, au fost prezente și 3-4 profesoare. Traineri au fost Ana Andronic de la Iași și Marian Ancuța de la Tg. Jiu, ei fiind lucrători de tineret.

So we start working... în picioare, în cerc. Vreau să vă spun că tot trainingul a avut un ritm alert. Ba în picioare, ba jos, ba afară, ba dansam... lucruri non-formale.Deci începem cu jocuri de nume. Dacă aș fi... aș fi...: foarte interesant, de la jocul ăsta mi-a rămas și numele: dacă aș fi în calculatorul dvs. aș fi procesorul. Apoi continuăm un joc de cunoaștere în care desenăm un animăluț și scriem lângă el numele nostru, 2 hobby-uri și un obiectiv.

Terminăm cu joculețele trecem la ceva big. Ne împărțim în 3 echipe, fiecare prezintă educația formală, cea non-formală și cea informală. Eu am fost la non-formali: o treabă destul de grea, având în vedere că eu chiar nu știam cu ce se mănâncă.

Începe Ana cu prezentarea scopului proiectului TiA. Ceva cu fonduri europene, depunere de proiecte, targeturi... smth. Trecem apoi la descrierea Lucrătorului cu Tineret iar noi îl definim © Elefant Roz (termen înregistrat și patentat de către grupul de la Râmnicu-Vâlcea. Dacă doriți să îl folosiți trebuie să ne rugați frumos). Apoi, împreună cu Marian, realizăm un brainstorming al acestei profesii și vorbim despre calitățile și atributele care sunt necesare unui LT.

În final, pe la ora 8, suntem rugați să ne notăm ziua care trecuse: să stăm pe podea, pe scaun, sau să ne urcăm pe scaune. Așa că puteți ghici ce s-a întâmplat.

PS: continui după... mă duc la școală că iar pierd autobuzul

De obicei, la început de an, e bine să fac o listă cu ce am lenevit în vară, și care sunt obiectivele mele principale. Dacă până acuma, de fiecare dată obiectivul era să intru la Lahovary cu medie mare (obiectiv care de altfel l-am îndeplinit cu brio, deși mi-am dat seama după că este o prostie), în acest moment principalul obiectiv este să intru la o facultate [nu știu care și unde], fără medie mare să nu mă stresez. Așa că să începem două liste lungi:

80 de probleme la informatică pe arhiva .Campion și alte 20 pe InfoArena + învățat C++ STL
am învățat principiile OOP împreună cu C#, SQL, Javascript și PHP
realizat 2 site-uri + 1 în construcție

jucat volei de vreo 10 ori cu prietenii
vizitat Spania
reapucat de scris pe blog
făcut temă mate [2/3 până acuma]

Vacanta Spania - partea a III-a

În acest ultim articol despre vacanța mea din Spania, vă voi povesti despre Sevilla și croaziera mea pe râul Quadalquivir, catedrala-moschee din Cordoba, Toledo – capitala spirituală a Spaniei și nu în ultimul rând Madrid, unde am vizitat palatul regal, muzeele Prado și Reina Sofia, și nu în ultimul rând stadionul echipei Real Madrid, Santiago Bernabeu, unde am stat pe scaunul lui Mourinho.

Ziua 5 - Sevilla

Ajungem în Sevilla după-amiaza. Plecăm într-o croazieră, unde ghidul ne spune să ne uităm la o statuie care a dăruit-o România regelui Spaniei [e și în poze]. Apoi seara, mergem la un spectacol de Flamenco extraordinar. Mi-a plăcut dăruirea dansatorilor în primul rând și apoi faptul că scoteau praf din scenă la propriu.

Ziua 6 - Sevilla

De dimineață vizităm cea de-a III-a catedrală din Europa ca mărime, și locul unde se află mormântul lui Cristofor Columb. Ghidul a făcut și o glumă spunând că acesta a călătorit mai mult mort decât viu [din cauza țărilor care se băteau pe osemintele acestuia]. Mie mi s-a părut mai frumoasă decât Sagrada Familia, poate și pentru faptul că e mai ”omenească”.

Ziua 7 - Cordoba

Cel mai lung drum îl parcurgem astăzi: de la Sevilla la Madrid, 530 km, cu o oprire în Cordoba pentru a vizita moscheea, unde ar fi Sfântul Graal, adică pocalul din care a băut Iisus la Cina cea de Taină. Apoi, staționăm la un han unde, ”cică”, s-ar fi oprit și Sancho ~~Pancho~~ Panza împreună cu Don Quijote.

Ziua 8 – Madrid & Toledo

Capitala Spaniei: Madrid, zici că suntem la București [exceptând drumurile și firele care sunt prin pământ]. Am fost înjurat în românește chiar în piață de către un conațional la cerșit. În rest am vizitat arena de coride, cele 2 fântâni arteziene unde se scaldă suporterii de la Atletico și cei de la Real Madrid când câștigă câte o etapă, și chestii mai importante [booring], adică piețe, statui, etc. După-amiaza am intrat în palatul regal: păi în Peleșul nostru vezi chestii de 101 mai tari decât în palatul ăsta. Seara am fost în Toledo, ne-am plimbat, și am vizitat un atelier de săbii.

Ziua 9 – Madrid

Free time !!! So, când toată lumea pornea să viziteze muzee borin’, noi am fost să vizităm stadionul Santiago Bernabeu, în care încap doar 90.000 de oameni. E incredibil să vezi atâtea trofee [chiar si de baschet sau tenis.] pe metru pătrat și să stai pe scaunul pe care a stat Mourinho cu o seară înainte. Apoi am fost să vizităm picturile neînțelese/abstracte/din greșeală de-ale lui Picasso sau Salvador Dali, în muzeul Reina Sofia. Apoi, ne-am dus până la gara Atocha, unde în sala de așteptare e o seră maaaaare, plină de palmieri și broaște țestoase. Muzeul Prado s-a dovedit a fi ceva mai interesant, unde portretele și peisajele chiar mi-au plăcut extraordinar.

În ziua 10, am zburat cu avionul acasă. Sper că ți-a plăcut articolul și o ultimă recomandare: dacă ai posibilitatea și vrei să vizitezi o țară, ia circuit cu ghid cu avionul. Scapi de grija planurilor și a rezervărilor, și te poți relaxa mai bine.
