Building Blocks for a Great Workout Wardrobe

2012-09-06T12:48:00.000-04:00

We all know that everyone should have a LITTLE BLACK DRESS in their wardrobe but what essentials are necessary for your WORKOUT wardrobe? There are key pieces that are simply a must for ensuring that you are comfortable and EXCUSE free!
If you are like me, what you wear depends on your MOOD. Put it this way [some days you are more confident than others]. I don't always feel like I can confidently sport these SUPER CUTE HOT SHORTS but they are great to have in your fitness wardrobe especially if you practice hot yoga or work out in the heat like us Florida gals!

Hot shorts are NOT for every body type. If you can wear them then add that to your wardrobe essential list if not, then capri length pants are another great option when the heat is on! We love these Spirit Capri Pants because they are flattering on ANY body type and look super cool and fashionable. They have lots of cool details (see next sentence) and are also available in short length (shorts) and long length (yoga pants).

If super cute contrast stitching, sparkly rivets and real working pockets and belt loops "cute details mentioned above" are not your thing (did I really say that-how silly) then go for a simple basic capri pant such as the Protokolo Basic Capri. It's simple yet with a wide variety of color choices and superior fabric quality these "basics" can be worn with your everyday clothes. We love them under a long t-shirt, tunic or chunky sweater!
The versatility of these basics can be easily incorporated into your everyday wardrobe.

Now let's talk tops! There are some days where you feel SUPER FIT AND FABULOUS and you have no qualms about wearing a tight fitting top and the Ambition Cami is a basic that has some very cool attributes. First, the colors are right on target for the season. Second, the built in bra - HELLO - gotta have that to keep the girls in check! Then let's talk about adjustments. We have the adjustable straps to ensure the perfect fit for your body and the drawstring bust area! Yup, right in the center is a drawstring that you can pull out and tie into a cute little bow showing as much or as little cleavage as you choose. It also adds a nice feminine touch to this basic fitness tank. The figure hugging material smooths and shapes while remaining light enough to wick away perspiration keeping you cool and comfortable while doing what you do!

For days when you need a loose fitting roomy top (like after a weekend of cheat meals, or spending some time on a long vacation where you ate and drank to no end). PalmBeachAthleticWear.com has a few of these that you must add to your workout wardrobe list. The T Back Blouse is perfect to wear over a cute colorful sports bra. Another great option is the Rio top. It's loose fitting and has an adjustable tie at the hem to allow you to wear long and loose or pulled and lifted for a blousing effect. The hand painted rings in back add an artistic and unique look that takes it from boring basic to super fashionable! Choose from a pretty washed blue or classic white. I say get both because it gives you an excuse to wear them more often.
There you have it! Some building blocks for a GREAT WORKOUT WARDROBE! Stay tuned for our next addition to building a great workout wardrobe. Got questions or comments? Let us know and don't forget to check us out on facebook and tweet with us on Twitter!

Embarking On a New Workout Style - Workout Journal Entry #1

2012-08-18T17:35:00.003-04:00

Changing things up a bit on the good ole Palm Beach Athletic Wear Blog. Why am I doing this? Why am I doing what you ask? Why am I writing this blog?

I'm going to start from the EXACT place that I am. If it's all over the place that's because I can't help it - it's one of my many issues.

On July 24, 2012 my friend Teresa and I decided to try a boot-camp style gym. We took a free trial class in which during that first class we had this exchange of words (while running with a GIGANTIC medicine ball on shoulder):

Me (dying)- "Teresa, I FREAKING HATE this."

Teresa (also dying)- "I know me too this sucks, this is NOT for me."

Me (dying more now that I'm talking while doing this) - "It TOTALLY sucks Why are we doing this? Who's stupid idea was this?"

Teresa - "YOURS- Thanks, I hate you."

Me - "I hate you too. Brat."

We left the class that day saying NEVER AGAIN.

Two days later Teresa (by the way I call her Brat- a name she earns on a regular basis) calls me and says, "I have decided to join the Boot-camp gym." I said, "OK I will too."

Why this happened? I have no idea I mean we ABSOLUTELY despised that crazy workout.

Now, you must know that it was a very abnormal decision for me to join this place. I have 2 friends who own these types of gyms. Both are awesome (the friends and their gyms). I have tried a few Crossfit classes over the years but decided these types of workouts will NEVER be for me. Why would it never be for me? I am someone who does or has tried just about every type of workout that exists?

My reasons for NOT wanting to join a Crossfit or Boot-camp style gym:

I have too many injuries from a childhood of competitive gymnastics (bad knees), a few car accidents (bad back, herniated discs in my neck) a torn rotator cuff in right shoulder from a mugger (a very unsuccessful mugger who dragged me through a crowded parking lot from my arm as he drove the car with me hanging and dragging). That's a story I don't have time to tell right now. This blog is long enough.
I'm getting up in the years and my body/metabolism are starting to change and I have to work harder at it. I don't want to get BIG and BULKY. I am tall and have very long, lean arms and legs. I'd like to stay that way and not look like SHE-man, you know He-Man's (master of the universe's girlfriend). No offense to any SHE-man's out there I just don't want my body to look that way. Pilates, yoga, clean eating and good genes have given me the long lean type of body. I intend to try to keep as long as I can hopefully forever.
I've always felt it's kinda like a cult. I can already feel the attacks for saying that. Keep in mind I am now a Crossfitter boot-campy person. Yes, I still don't really know the correct terminology. Feel free to school me on it. I am not opposed to criticism. Alright!
The knee high socks and people saying "IS THIS PALEO?" annoy the HECK out of me. Once again no offence. Maybe someday I will show up with knee high socks that say "Bacon" on the side of them. (doubt it, please punch me if I do). "Jessica D. I know this has you laughing right now."
Price - I will still want to keep my Yoga and Pilates memberships because I love them and all 3 add up to quite a large chunk of dough.

So here's what has happened so far. After workout #7 I got in my car and felt "AMAZING" so "AMAZING" that I called my husband (who WILL NEVER do crossfit for reason #2 see above- he has injuries too) and told him that I just had the absolute best workout EVER. I walked in my front door feeling like a million bucks, made myself an egg white omelet with lots of veggies, took a shower and proceeded to blow dry my hair when IT happened. I thought somebody was stabbing me with a knife in my lower back. I fell to the floor and COULD NOT GET UP, COULD NOT CRAWL, I was stuck there. So much for my awesome day awesome workout AWESOME - NOT! Husband said "SEE I TOLD YOU Kristen YOU have too many injuries!"

I spent 5 days like this- immobile in the recliner, icing my back with my necessary supplies: my kindle, my laptop and my cell phone. When I had to go to the bathroom or get up for any reason I had to use my rolling office chair in which I had to lean forward facing the chair and put weight on it as I wheeled to my destination. I looked ridiculous. (oh and I have to add that the Brat kept going while I was out of commission -WOOT WOOT. Sometimes shes a GOOD BRAT). So proud of the Brat.

Fast Forward 1 week, 3 dr. appointments and 3 massages later. I feel back to normal. Back to the gym I go ready for my WOD (workout of the day). Brat and I continued this week going 4 days in a row and we KILLED IT (at 6:30 Am I might add). YEAH!!!!

Here comes to the part of "Why am I writing this blog?" My clothes are barely fitting.

I call Brat at work. It goes like this:

Me - "Hey Brat, are your clothes too tight? My shirt is too tight, my bras are tighter, my jeans barely fit and right now my shorts that were too big a few weeks ago are now pulling at the sides. What the heck is going on? I'm getting bulky! You are supposed to tell me these things!"

Brat - "Well, funny you should say that because Sexy Rexy (this funny old man who we met when we worked together at a gym years ago) just came in the store and told me that I look like I've put on some weight. He said I was beginning to look a little thin there for a while."

Naturally, since my clothes are getting too tight and the Brat is listening to Sexy Rexy, we don't exactly like what is happening to the APPEARANCE of our bodies. Basically, Brat and I feel like we are seriously bulking up. Our diets are on target- eating super clean, correct portion sizes, etc. I basically eat Paleo with the exception of some cheese and whole grain brown rice on occasion. I may have a cheat meal (not a cheat day) once a week but not more than that. I have been eating "clean" for years so this is easy for me (lean protein, veggies, no sugar etc.). We have both decided that the only way we will really be able to judge the changes in our bodies is to take pictures weekly (for our eyes only at least for now) and compare our results. We will also be keeping track of what we are eating/drinking.

Neither one of us knows what is going on with our bodies. We are not lifting ridiculously heavy weight. We ARE listening to our bodies and doing what we KNOW our bodies will allow us. Maybe our bodies are in shock mode? Maybe we are both about to get a visit from our dreaded Auntie Flow (TMI but we are), maybe we are retaining water (we both have been craving some serious salt and I have never LIKED salt). Regardless of the reason or all of the reasons we are sticking with it. Why? because we do like the way we feel. We both feel better physically and mentally. We like the challenge, the competition. We like not having to "think" about what workout to do. We like pushing ourselves beyond what we thought we could do. We like doing this together as friends and supporting one another to keep going.

This blog is my/our journal of sorts as two friends navigate through new challenges in our attempts to stay fit and healthy and "hopefully" to get in the BEST shape of our lives. Maybe you will want to keep reading, maybe you won't, maybe this will be helpful for other women? Either way you have it, this is our Crazy Fitness Life blog and we will tell it like it is and use this as our workout journal.

Got Bona? -Product Review & Palm Beach Athletic Wear Bona Floor Mop Giveaway!

2012-08-11T07:34:00.000-04:00

It's not everyday that companies ask Palm Beach Athletic Wear to do a product review on our blog. So, when we were asked to try out the New, Bona Hardwood Floor Care Mop for hard surfaces (stone, tile and laminate) we jumped at the opportunity!

Donna Wallerstein, our Marketing and Social Media Manager has been a longtime lover of green cleaning supplies and we knew she would be the perfect person to review this eco-friendly mop. Donna is picky about what she likes to use around her house due to many in her family that have allergies. She prefers un-scented, dye-free laundry detergents and doesn't like to deviate from her favorite cleaning products, (except to try out the latest new, eco-friendly gadget or find). Donna is often the person our Palmbeachathleticwear.com office goes to get the scoop on the next best gadget for our home AND, above all, she has a yoga studio room devoted to working out. A perfect place to test Bona's Stone, Tile & Laminate Floor Mop!

Got a home gym or fitness studio space like Donna? Palm Beach Athletic Wear is giving one lucky blog reader their very own Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaning System for stone, tile and laminate floors!

How to Enter to Win the Palm Beach Athletic Wear Contest Giveaway?
1. Sign up for the Palm Beach Athletic Wear Newsletter here: http://bit.ly/News4U It's Free and filled with workout trend tips, exclusive coupon codes and the latest news and hot item must haves!

2. Comment in this blog post (below). Tell us WHERE, in your home you would get the most use from the Bona Hardwood Floor Care Mop and WHY you want to win a Bona Stone, Tile & Laminate Floor Mop Kit.

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaning Mop for Stone, Tile and Laminate Product Review by Donna Wallerstein for Palm Beach Athletic Wear:

I love working out at home - Yoga is my passion. But, let's face it, with the kids hanging on my ankles and home for the summer, cleaning my home and working out in my fitness studio for a little me-time has fallen short. So, when I received the Bona Stone, Tile & Laminate Floor Mop kit in the mail, I made it my mission to get the gumption and put the extra effort into cleaning a room that hasn't been used in longer than I would like.

If you are anything like me, you love the latest cleaning gadgets and probably own a Swiffer (or two) or even an iRobot/Roomba. I opened the Bona box to unveil an ergonomic cleaning mop to whisk me off to a distant land and help magically clean my bamboo floors. Putting together the Bona mop was super simple. It snaps into place and the cartridge is easy to insert too. I sprayed a little Bona Floor Cleaner on a scuff mark that has been on my floor for waaaayyy too long. (I had tried scrubbing with a Magic Eraser to no avail)! BAM. Gone! As soon as I applied the mop to the mark with a little effort is was gone! I was amazed at how little effort was involved in getting this troublesome scuff mark off my floor. Happiness ensued and I was in love.

Yes, in love with my new, Bona Floor Mop! I mopped the rest of my home gym workout room floor, getting into the MOST hard to reach areas and corners that normally harbor crumbs from one of my little monsters' granola bars (even though food is SUPPOSED to be off-limits in that room, Ugh)! Aside from doing a superior job cleaning my workout gym floor, the Bona Stone, Tile & Laminate Floor Mop continued to clean my tile floors in my hallway, kitchen and bathrooms! It swiveled so easily my wrist didn't feel broken and my back didn't need a Chiropractor afterwards!

I did my homework on this mop, after all, what makes this one special? The Bona Floor Mop is responsible for cleaning many NBA Sports Arena floors and, although the website features a woman cleaning her hardwoods while her kids lie around playing wooden blocks with some random dude, ohh, Dad, (which would NEVER happen in my home -Get outta the way, Momma's Cleaning!) the photo rings true in that it is quiet and simple to use, has a natural, Green cleaning solution and yes, you can even mop around your family (if you MUST). What I like most about my new Bona is that it is Green AND Cleans better than any other floor mop I own. It's a keeper!

After completely mopping most of my home with little effort, I ran back into my workout home gym, locked the door for a full hour and had some me time with one of my favorite yoga DVD's!

Good luck winning the Bona Stone, Tile & Laminate Floor Mop. It's so easy to Enter to Win. Check out our Giveaway Details below & Enter to Win now!

Happy cleaning & workout - XOXO!
