The Preschool & Kindergarten will continue on, under the direction of Mrs. Sifuentes and her team - Mrs. Santos (K), and Mrs. Johnson, and others. For those that attended the graduation, you saw the brand new Kindergarten room!
Thank you to my hard working preschool team -- Mrs. Sifuentes, Mrs. Johnson, and Ms. Stella.

Thank you to Ms. Fabby for all her assistance this week with graduation activities. Thank you to Mrs. Centmeyer and Mrs. Santos for all their hard work with pre-school this year too. (And of course, Ms. Linda and Patsy!)

Finally, thank you to all Palm View students, parents, and staff for making the last 5 years, GREAT!

Please join the Palm View family on Sunday at 10:45 AM to hear Pastor Don Sanderson preach as he begins in his pastoral role and leads Palm View into a new era.

As many of you know, we had attempted to keep the school going by merging with another local Christian school. While that did not happen, it has paved the way for other merger talks.

Life Church, under the leadership of my friend, Don Sanderson, has been asked by our denomination officials to consider merging his congregation onto the Palm View property and becoming the new lead pastor. For those that may remember, Don's youth pastor was our featured graduation speaker 2 years ago. Don has been a chaplain with the Whittier PD since he moved out here from Ohio five years ago. He serves as a sectional presybter and coaches churches through transitions. I see him at community events on a regular basis. Pastor Don Sanderson's capable leadership is what is needed in our church in this season.

For all those that consider Palm View as your first or second home because of the successful 25 year history of our school, I can assure you that Pastor Don and his team will also make you feel welcome.

The church has set aside Sunday, June 27th as the date of the vote affirming a merge. I would ask that all families keep the church in prayer during this time. For those that would like to attend special prayer meetings, please come to the sanctuary on the next two Monday nights.

As that Sunday, June 27th, will be our last day at Palm View as we head to Wichita, KS, we are excited as to the future possibilities that still lay ahead in Whittier.

Sincerely,

Rev. Marvin J. Miller, M.Div
Associate Pastor for Christian Education, Palm View Assembly of God.
Principal, Palm View Christian Schools (PK-8)

The text of the proposed resolution is below.

WHEREAS, the leaders of Palm View Assembly of God, located at 7106 Sorensen Avenue, Whittier, California, and the leaders of Life Church, Whittier, located at 16431 Leffingwell Rd, Whittier, California have entered into discussions regarding a possible merger of the two churches, and,

WHEREAS, these leaders have been in much prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this possible merger, and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the name of the newly merged church be Palm View Assembly of God, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the newly merged church will operate under the current Corporation for Palm View Assembly of God, and the Current Constitution and Bylaws of Palm View Assembly of God, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the current church boards be combined into a single church board (11 total), and that the newly merged church board be authorized to elect its own corporate officers and determine a schedule of rotation for board member elections, and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the merger shall become effective immediately upon receiving an affirmative vote of 2/3rds of all members present and voting by both congregations, at a special meeting of each church called for the purpose of voting upon the merger, and after receiving an affirmative vote of the Executive Presbytery of the Southern California District of the Assemblies of God, and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the corporate officers of the newly merged congregation be authorized to file the necessary documents related to the merger with the Secretary of State for the State of California.

The entire K-8th Grade enjoyed Wendy Velasco, cellist from the Rio Hondo Symphony as she demonstrated different string instruments at Palm View.

Playing a little Haydn and some Brahms, she illustrated the difference between classical and romantic music.

Having some fun with the teachers and students, she played theme songs from current movies. Even though the teachers had first chance to guess the movie, they still lost 5 to 1. Thanks Coach Jer! Otherwise we would have been blanked!

If any student still has a question regarding string instruments, please ask your parents to help you click on this link and email our guest, Wendy Velasco.

Nelles Youth Correctional Facility. (Photo courtesy state Department of General Services)WHITTIER - The state has chosen Brookfield Homes, a national home developer locally based in Costa Mesa, to develop the 73.8-acre now-closed Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility.

Negotiations between Brookfield and the state still must be completed before a final deal would go to the state Public Works Board for approval, said Eric Lamoureux, spokesman for the state Department of General Services.

"They were the ones who had the best offer for the property," Lamoureux said.

Neither the company nor Lamoureux were willing to provide details about the offer.

The property has been vacant since 2004, when the state closed the 113-year-old prison.

The state earlier this year had selected the development team of Lewis Operating Group of Upland and Shapell Homes of Beverly Hills to develop the property, but negotiations fell apart. Officials from the state and the developers declined to talk about what happened.

Brookfield Homes once partnered with other companies and the city to develop the Nelles site. However, the deal never went through.

"We're hopeful this time that it will end in a purchase and development of the property," said Adrian Foley, president of the Southland division of Brookfield.

The final deal is expected to include a significant downpayment with the final sums coming when the city has approved a project, Foley said.

"We've very excited," Foley said. "It's in a wonderful city and location."

Foley said he expects their proposal for the site to be some kind of mixed-use development of residential, commercial and office space.

Whittier City Council members have said they favor a development alternative calling for 45 percent residential, 35 percent commercial and 20 percent other uses, such as medical offices.

Foley said he is aware of the city's expectations and expects that formula to be used as a base to develop a plan.

Jeff Collier, director of community development, said he's happy that the process is now moving forward. "We want to see the deal consummated so we can see this site put back into productivity," Collier said.

Once Brookfield and the state reach a final deal, the city will begin working with the developer on a plan for the property.

"Once we get that plan, we can kick off the environmental impact report process," Collier said.

He said it could take about a year to 18 months from when the city gets a plan until the Planning Commission would hold hearings.

Brookfield Homes is a publicly traded company with $1 billion in assets that builds about 800 homes a year nationally.

The company also builds about 350 homes annually in the Southern California area, Foley said.

"We are building in Irvine, Anaheim, Ontario, Long Beach and Santa Clarita," he said.
