A framed copy of that quote hangs on the wall in Jake Owen's home in Nashville. It's served as a valuable piece of advice in the last few years as he's made the transition from a country newcomer with an infectious first single called "Yee Haw" to a bona fide star with a handful of hits under his belt and an ever-growing and loyal fan base.

Some young artists might buckle under the kind of pressure and distractions that comes with country stardom, but Jake's sophomore album, Easy Does It, indicates he's taking Waylon's words to heart. There's a certain confidence and honesty evident in Jake's performances on all of the album's 10 tracks, eight of which he had a hand in writing. In short, Jake makes it all look, well, easy.

In the past three years, Jake's racked up plenty of reasons to believe in himself and the creative direction he is taking on Easy Does It. The journey began in 2006 with the release of his debut album on RCA Nashville, Startin' With Me. The insightful title cut from that project hit the country top ten, leading to Jake's first ACM nomination for Top New Male Vocalist. An out-of-left-field hit with Sugarland and Little Big Town on the tune "Life in a Northern Town" gave Jake's upward career momentum even more steam, garnering the Florida native his first CMA and Grammy nominations in 2008. With the new project, Jake builds on these successes, using his own life as the catalyst for his songwriting.

WSU Alumni Association 2010 Graduate BBQ Bash May 6th

The Washington State Alumni Association will be hosting the 2010 Graduate BBQ Bash on May 6 at 5 p.m. at the Lewis Alumni Centre. The event is a celebration for 2010 WSU graduates and friends and family are encouraged to attend the BBQ Bash. WSUAA staff will be giving free moving boxes to 2010 graduates while supplies last. There will be door prizes, give-aways, games, music and an appearance by Butch. The cost is free to 2010 graduates and $5 for friends, family and community members. Wouldn't it be great to buy a locally generated gift and have the money stay in this region? Then you must try Palouse Paradise Baskets. Palouse Paradise Baskets (PPB) is a non-profit gift basket fundraising endeavor operating under the umbrella of St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Moscow, Idaho. We have a two-fold mission. We try to buy most of the products for our gift baskets in the Palouse region, and the money raised goes directly into education. More specificially, it goes to the St. Mary's scholarship fund. St. Mary's helps a lot of folks in a variety of ways that go above and beyond educating our young. This is a way you can help support St. Mary's--and get a beautiful gift in return for someone you love.

Take Valentine's Day, for instance. Starting with the premise that Valentine's Day can be about more than chocolate and roses, we've created a "Fat Free" gift mug with hand-knit spa socks, rose fizzies for the bath and jojoba oil. It's all in a 14 oz. heart mug and sells for $20. Or for a few calories more, how about a wooden box of huckleberry chocolates or huckleberry tea, floppy animals, a heart shaped box of 12-tea light candles with white musk and cinnamon scents.... We've got really cute Valentine's Day items, too numerous to mention.

Free classes offered to job seekers countywide

Two classes are now being offered by Whitman County Library’s Occupational Resource Connection program (WORC) to help residents in the process of a job search or those considering a career change.

The first class called Computer Basics and your Job Search teaches participants how to best utilize computers for successful job searches. Presenters will review the basics of the job search process, assist with cover letters and resumes, teach the set up and use of email and also, how to store documents online. High-speed Internet computers will be available for all participants and each receives a free planner to stay organized in the job search process.

The second class called Job Search Tools will introduce the WORC Career Program website. The website is a portal into on-line resources in the areas of career exploration, education and training, applications, resumes and cover letters, interviewing, and community resources. Participants will learn how to access, navigate, and use the resources of the website. As well, individualized assistance and additional work focused computer time will be available.

WORC classes are part of Renew Washington, a program funded by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation through the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

Initial workshops are scheduled in the libraries in the following communities:
