They placed a piano right in the center of the grand hall, and throughout the evening, loved ones took turns performing- guitar, voice, piano. David and Megan even performed together, singing “Grow Old With You” from the Wedding Singer. It was an incredibly special moment.

When families invite me to photograph an Ohav Shalom bar mitzvah, I understand the weight of responsibility that comes with it. This isn’t just another event – it’s a pivotal moment in a young teen’s life, a milestone that represents the transition from childhood to greater religious responsibility within the Jewish community.

My journey with each family begins long before the big day, though! The morning of your child’s bar mitzvah I typically arrive at least an hour before the service starts, and encourage you to invite your family to do so as well. This is wonderful so that while the synagogue is still quiet, I can capture the b’mitzvah practicing one last time on the bimah with the yad. Without restrictions around where I can stand, I can capture candidly those moments from up close and using light stands to professionally light the moment that your son or daughter reviews their Torah portion one final time.

This pre-service period is also when we capture family portraits in the sanctuary, and formal portraits of your son or daughter holding the Torah in front of the ark. I’ve found that starting with these formal portraits allows everyone to relax once the ceremony is finished, and just focus on enjoying each other’s company.

In just 10 minutes we created beautiful candids and formal portraits, professional wedding photos both seated and snuggling, standing, and walking- some with a natural backdrop and others with a more urban vibe- and all without being in eyes of their wedding guests.
