Happy fall, and please let that be a self-fulfilling prophecy in Southern California!

It's been the hottest record on summer on record in my neck of the woods, and while I am no stranger to extreme weather, this one hit us hard.

Happy Summer 2015!

She was a Nosy Neighbor...

She was a Nosy Neighbor...

Shortly after I divorced the Prince of Darkness, I bought the smallest house on the west side of L.A.

My tiny yellow house in Venice, CA.

I quickly discovered that the woman, Lavonne, who lived behind me 'with' her husband, and her special needs daughter, Laura Lynne (pictured here), was the Neighborhood Busybody and tough as nails.

I spent fifteen years in that house. My relationship with Lavonne was never predictable.

She told me about the time the Chinese lady crashed her car onto my side lawn and nearly ran over a lizard. She told me that the couple that used to live across the street was NOT married. And that the son of the very LOUD man who screamed at his wife who lived somewhere down the block had gotten high, and killed his grandmother to steal her money to buy drugs. That man now lived in a prison in Southern California.

Lavonne saw it all, and knew it all.

I befriended Laura Lynn. She'd come over for playtime with the cats, or to hang out. I'd walk her home, thereafter, even though home was one house away. One time Laura asked if she could try my lip gloss. I received a threatening note slipped under my front door that stated, "We DO NOT put cosmetics on MY daughter!" But we did exchange Easter baskets, Christmas presents, Halloween goodies.

Lavonne would occasionally drop a comment, "Gee you sure do talk on your phone a lot in the kitchen." "Um, yes," I said. "How do you know that?" "We spy on you of course. Over the fence. In fact, you could make it a little easier if you left your kitchen curtains opened..."

She was so excited that she and her husband Hank were married for 50 years. "Congrats! What's your secret?" I asked. "He lives in a house up the street," she said. "I don't want to live with him and all his messy art projects. Gah. I feed him dinner and then I send him away at night."

There was the Emergency phone call about the "disease-infested rat" in my backyard. I was instructed to be careful! Panicked, I called Orkin, some other place. No one was available for a rat emergency. So I walked over to Lavonne's house and knocked on the door to get more details.

She ushered me inside what looked like a time machine from the 1960's. Plastic covered furniture, green shag carpeting. An hour later, I had the entire lay of the land. When every tree in the back yard was planted. The branch her dad broke from the tree to whup her when she was bad. Because Lavonne had grown up in that house. About the rat in my backyard? She'd seen it TWO DAYS prior...

Two years ago I moved away. I'd drive by Lavonne's house, pull over, wave, chit-chat. I offered for them to come by and see the new place. But I was gone, an era was over, and she was no longer my nosy neighbor.

I went to work yesterday and drove by her house. Something was wrong. Too many cars in the driveway. Too many people. Other neighbors, the front door wide open, the house dark. I came back from work and knocked on he other neighbor's door.

Now I was the Nosy Neighbor.

Lavonne had tripped and fell in her packrat house, broke her hip, and died in January. Laura Lynn is now living at a home for Challenged Adults somewhere north of L.A. The house is considered a "teardown" and the family is asking 1.3 Mil.

The neighbor told me Lavonne told him she liked to look after me because I was a "single lady who lived alone." He walked me through the house to see if I wanted a desk or something. And I saw the remnants of a life, the green shag carpeting, and all the stuff that remains as the years and the gestures and all those crazy-ass moments came flooding back.

God bless, Lavonne. You were a great mom, and you did a terrific job on Neighborhood Watch all those years. Time to take it easy for a while.

You will be missed.

I tried my hand at vlogging the other day for the first time. This is not 'flogging' like 50 Shades.

It's more like blogging but you blither on a bit. This vlog is about the narration process between Author and Narrator. The narrator for the majority of my Cupcakes' mystery books is Kelly Self.

I like her. She is professional, does a great job and puts a lot of effort into her work.

Mom got the last laugh...

My mom, Susan Marie Timmel DuMond, nagged me for years to lie about my age.

"Your grandmother lied about her age, I lie about my age. You need to start lying about your age," she said.

"But, I don’t want to lie about my age, Mom."

"You’re making the rest of us look bad if you don’t lie about your age."

"Yeah, whatever," I grumbled and continued not lying about my age.

I sold my house late 2012, and was able to go home to see Mom more frequently in 2013. We celebrated her 85th birthday in June, 2013.

After a ‘medical incident’ that happened in the fall, we moved Mom to Our House Assisted Living in November, 2013. She was no longer safe living on her own.

I grabbed an airplane ticket to visit her in late February. I talked to her on Saturday, Feb. 15th — we were both looking forward spending time together. She died the next day, unexpectedly, Feb. 16th, 2014.

To say it was a whirlwind of immense suckiness is a gigantic understatement.

New Years Eve, 2014 I decided I needed to get my refund from Southwest Air before enough time passed, and I lost the money.

So I filled out the paperwork, the flights, the cancellation number, the tracking number for correspondence with Southwest, etc., etc., made a copy of her death certificate, attached it, read it and just —

PAUSED.

Her death certificate said she was 86-years-old at time of death.

No. She was 85-years-old.

Then I did the math.

Mom actually WAS 86 + years-old when she died.

I thought she was 85 because…

She had lied to me about her age…

In a strange way, I felt like she got an extra year. And maybe if she did — maybe I got an extra year with her too.

God bless you, Mom. You had the last laugh, after all.

I love you, I miss you and you will always be…

Is she fictional or a historic person?

Lucy’s a fictional character, but she feels so real because she is 'every girl'.

When and where is the story set?

Part-time Princess is set in present day Chicago as well as in Fredonia: a small, pristine European crown jewel of a country situated in the Alps between Italy, France and Switzerland.

What should we know about Lucy?

She has a heart of gold, she's a hard-worker, she knows how to think-on-her feet and improvise. She is determined.

What is the main conflict? What messes up her life?

Lucy's fired from her job as a cocktail waitress in a biker bar in Chicago. She takes an interesting part-time job impersonating Lady Elizabeth Billingsley of Fredonia. In the mother of all makeovers, she is groomed to the nines, learns how to walk and talk like a lady, get naked like a European lady, perfect the royal wave and curtsey.

She memorizes the list of characters in Elizabeth's life before she flies to Fredonia for a ten day gig that turns into a month nightmare/dream come true. On the flight over, she meets Nicholas - who's had a torrid affair with the real Elizabeth in the past, and wants to take up where they left off.

Awkward.

While Lucy is supposed to keep Prince Cristoph interested in Elizabeth - there's a slight problem when she starts to fall for his brother, Nick.

What is the personal goal of the character?

She believes her personal goal is to be good at her job. She discovers her personal goal is much more than that.

Part-time Princess Book Excerpt - On Nakedness

Except for a quick nap on British Air and passing out, I’d been up for well over twenty-four hours and desperately needed to sleep. Steam wisped from the simmering hot tub waters. It looked so warm and relaxing—it could soothe my aching muscles. I remembered the mineral waters at the Drake Hotel. This spa beckoned me, practically called my name. But I had no bathing suit.

Whatever.

I stripped off my clothes and tossed them on the floor. My underwear would suit me just fine. I leaned down, set the timer for five minutes and the waters bubbled to life. I placed one foot on the first stair that descended into the tub when I remembered Zara and Mr. Philip’s lesson: How to be Naked like a European Lady.

I glanced around. I was completely alone. I listened—didn’t hear a peep. The windows in the room were high on the walls and covered completely by blinds. And I was finally in Europe—now was as good a time as any. I stepped out of the water, unclipped my front-hook bra, pulled the straps down my shoulders, shrugged out of it and tossed it onto my clothes pile. Shimmied out of my panties and pitched them as well.

I was buck naked in the middle of a room I’d never even been in before, in a filthy rich penthouse condo, in a foreign country. I did a quick happy dance to celebrate my progress in conquering my modesty and then stepped into the tub’s soothing waters. “Aah.” I sighed, leaned my head back against the tiled side and flinched when that touched the painful bump on my noggin.

I flipped over onto my stomach, placed my arms on top of the hot tub’s tiled lip, turned my head to the side and rested one cheek as my legs splayed out behind me. I sighed. “The perfect end to my not-so-perfect day,” I said.

“Actually I’d call that the perfect ‘rear-end’ to my almost perfect day,” Nick said.

I snapped my head up and saw him standing in front of me, still dressed in the clothes he wore on the plane, wearing a big fat grin on his face.

“Ack!” I screamed and ducked under the water.

Thanks for hosting me today, Pamela! A little bit about me? Well, I’ve been writing since age eleven, starting with wild adventure stories for my elementary school newsletter, growing up to be a television news journalist whose assignments took me on real life adventures. After traveling most of the world for many years, I segued into the more normal job of public relations, but I’ve never stopped writing. And after having witnessed life's struggles firsthand as a news journalist, I now write romantic fiction because I want my readers to be able to escape into a story guaranteed to have a happy ending! Tell us a little bit about The Disciplinarian’s Daughter

What was your inspiration for this story?

I wrote a story called The Disciplinarian a few years ago in Secrets, Volume 15 that was so wildly popular with readers that they demanded a sequel. I’m happy to say this story is about the disciplinarian’s daughter.

Why—out of all the ideas swimming around in your brain were you compelled to work on this?

I really wanted to give fans of The Disciplinarian the sequel they asked for. Plus, this story completes a trilogy that also includes The Bet in Secrets, Volume 27.

What good things have come to you by working on this project?

I’ve gained some wonderful fans of Victorian romance who have also enjoyed my Roman epic called Conqueror Vanquished.

What regrets/fears have you experienced by working on this project?

None! This story was one I really wanted to write.

Name of one or two people who helped you and why?

A million people help a writer on her way to becoming a published author… teachers, critique group partners, writing contest judges, editors, agents. The list is too long to thank everyone!

If you could give fellow artists/fans/followers key advice from your experience working on this project—what would it be?

As an author, the advice I would give to someone wanting to write (or succeed in any area, actually) is to never give up. What is it that they say? Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration! You have to do the work, put in the effort in order to succeed. To paraphrase Winston Churchill: never, never, never give up!

Your hopes/plans for the future and/or next project?

I’m part of an anthology called Seductive Fortunes, out in September 2014, with a contemporary erotic story called Fear Of Flying.

Well, I’ve won a few awards, but I’m most proud of being featured on NBC Nightly News back in 2009 as part of a story on how the state of the economy affects pop culture (TV, movies, etc) or offers a temporary escape from it (as in the case of romance novels). They even showed two of my book covers!

If you had a super power what would it be and why?

I wish I could fly. That would be awesome.

Favorite Famous Imaginary Boyfriend or Girlfriend? (We can all dream.)

Wow, an answer to this question could get dated so quickly! How about Richard Armitage from back in his Robin Hood days? Totally swoon-worthy!

Personal Hero you DON’T personally know?

J.K. Rowling – her story of being on welfare before selling her Harry Potter books are a perfect example of never giving up!

My dad – he’s shaped my life in so many ways.

Favorite Animal?

Max from How The Grinch Stole Christmas. If I could have a dog as cute as him, I’d definitely clean up the poo.

I felt a new batch of tears welling and I didn’t want to lose it in front of complete strangers. “I’m sorry, miss. I need to make tracks. Are you coming—”

She latched onto my arm and yanked me out of the elevator. I spun around and landed on my ass on the hallway’s lush, tapestry carpeted floor.

What kind of girl would rip me out of an elevator at the Drake Hotel?

“Who are you?” I gazed up at her. “And what do you want from me?”

“I’m Lady Elizabeth Theresa Billingsley of Fredonia. I want to hire you to be my Personal Assistant for a part-time job. I’ll pay you a king’s ransom, I’ll give you a signing bonus and I’ll throw in a makeover and wardrobe expenses. Say yes. I insist.”

Oh my God!

“Yes!”

She smiled and clapped her hands excitedly. “Swell-zies!”

who is a storyteller (writer/director/video editor/camera operator/producer).

Hi Joe!

Thanks for being here today. Can you please tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi! Thanks for having me! I love what you've done with your font.

I started telling stories using the still image. As a photographer, I met lots of different kinds of people because I had a camera around my neck and I heard a lot of stories I never would've without taking pictures. Photography led to me drawing, creating installation art, performance art, acting, doing stand up comedy, screenwriting and playwriting. I've also worked as a private investigator, waiter and bartender, where I met more people, including members of organized crime, and heard even more stories.

After banging my head against the entertainment industrial complex as a screenwriter and actor in Los Angeles, I could see the historical changes happening in telling stories online and decided to go completely indie as a storyteller, making stories with the help of the audience who wants to see them. Since making that decision, I've created two online series (Vampire Mob & PlayShorts), met thousands of people online and have had the most fun I've ever had as a storyteller.

Okay Joe – you’re on my radar because you’re working on something super cool called

Vampire Mob.

True! Vampire Mob is the first series I created (which you can watch watch right now, with swearing http://www.VampireMob.com) and was to have a third season but we lost the great Marcia Wallace (The Simpsons, The Bob Newhart Show) who plays one of the main characters. With a script that is longer than the first two seasons combined and that had numerous scenes including Marcia's character I had to decide to recast her role, rewrite season three to address her character's absence or maybe stop telling the story.

One idea that was floating around was to create Vampire Mob as a graphic novel and that seemed like one that would allow me to keep Marcia's character "alive" and to continue telling the story I wanted to, so that's what's happening, right now!

What was your inspiration for Vampire Mob?

While I was working as a private investigator in the intellectual property field I had a case that involved a mafia-related term and during the investigation I had a conversation with someone who thought I was someone else (part of the job). I said something along the lines of "There's so many vampire stories, and we haven't had a mafia story in a while, where's the vampire mob story?"

None of the vampire stories on screen appealed to me and I thought about trying to find another way into the genre as a writer, to keep some of the basic elements of the mythology, but lose all the mysticism.

I started cooking Vampire Mob as a short film script and the first realization of the story was as a short play called "Craig's Other List," which was performed twice. I continued to see the world growing as I developed VMob and thought telling the story as an episodic would give me the opportunity to tell a bigger story.

I made the first season with my own money and the amazing VMob audience contributed the budget to make the second season of Vampire Mob, which would not exist without their help. It's been one helluva ride making two seasons of Vampire Mob!

After working with 21 actors and a giant dog making Vampire Mob as an online series, I've begun the process of creating Vampire Mob as a graphic novel, working with artist JM Ringuet & creative consultant Corey Blake.

The script for issue 1 is locked-ish and JM has created the cover, which I've been showing parts of on Twitter (@VampireMob).

I will be having parts of the Vampire Mob graphic novel created to show the audience who I will be asking for help to create the first issue, initially digitally and, budget allowing, having copies printed.

Why—out of all the ideas swimming around in your brain were you compelled to work on this?

It seemed like it would be a fun.

Vampire Mob has been a life changing project, one that taught me more than anything I've ever worked on and one that allowed me to find an audience for the stories I tell. It was also a story I wrote with Marcia Wallace in mind, before ever asking her to be in it. She said yes!

I love the giant ensemble of flawed characters who inhabit the world of Vampire Mob. It's still a fun story to tell there's a whole lot more of it waiting to be told. I can't wait!

I started writing non-fiction and essays. I discovered and pitched the Erin Brockovich story which inspired me to attend UCLA screenwriting classes. I wrote a few screenplays that went -- nowhere. I finally saw the light and wrote my first novel - Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys (A Romantic, Comedic Annie Graceland Mystery.) A small press published it in 2010. At the end of my contract in 2012, I decided to leave that press and self-publish. What a great decision!

What am I working on?

In terms of novels I'm working on three very different projects.

Part-Time Princess (Ladies in Waiting #1) is a New Adult Romantic Comedy to be published Spring, 2014. It's a mash-up of Ms. Congeniality and Bridesmaids.

The Messenger (Mortal Beloved,Book Two) is the second book in a Young Adult Time Travel Romantic saga.

It's going to be shopped as a TV show! Yay!

Cupcakes, Bars and Rock Stars (A Romantic, Comedic Annie Graceland Mystery #5) is a snarky mystery about the mis-adventures of Annie Graceland, a slightly psychic baker who not only talks to ghosts but is guilted into solving their murders.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Part-time Princess is New Adult Romance, but it's heavy on the comedy. All my NA romances actually have plots. They're NOT just excuses to write sex scenes!

Messenger has a solid foot in present day but incorporates historical settings and figures. It is filled with romance, packed with adventure, but it is NOT dystopian!

Cupcakes has a little more romance and snarky humor than your average 'cozy' mystery. Cupcakes readers like their guys hot, their cocktails crisp and their humor not all that 'precious'.

Why do I write what I do?

I love writing funny novels. Readers enjoyed the adventures of Annie Graceland in Cupcakes, Lies, and Dead Guys and encouraged me to turn it into a series. (I listened to you all - thank you!)

But I was also dying to write YA genre - hence The Messenger series.

The strong romantic element in Messenger made me want to try my hand at a real romance.

New Adult Romance genre explores the ages between eighteen and twenty-five-ish. It's chock full of angst-filled moments like: leaving home. Finding yourself. Falling in love. Experimenting. NA Romance seemed like the perfect fit for me. I loved writing The Story of You and Me and will continue writing this genre.

How does my writing process work?

I'm definitely more a write by the seat of my pants kind of girl. I do however obsess over details. I needed to nail the history for Messenger and be accurate with medical descriptions for Story. When I write comedy I find I have to layer it in day by day. The humor does not happen over night.

Mama moves to Assisted Living

There comes a time when we've had enough rules, regulations and the should haves of life and love and parents and children and restrictions and society and rules and dogma and religion and politics.

Mama's 86th Birthday

Somewhere in this heart-stopping moment we decide (or don't decide when life interrupts with the unexpected death or huge life-transition of a parent, spouse, a sibling because life decides it for us,) to take a deep breath and...

break FREE, make a run for it and leave home, safety, all that is known, and race toward...

...the fearful, the unthinkable, the unknowable, the hasn't-even-been-imagined yet.

and HOLY CRAP it's so FREAKING SCARY that

our breath catches. Our hearts race. Our brains spin. But maybe, just maybe it will be okay...

Because maybe we will find peace, happiness. We'll discover that 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' was always, really, right here here in the homes we grew up in. In our back yards. On our front lawns.

I spent Sunday afternoon updating my blog and it's getting much closer to looking less befuddled.

Oh wait, that's me.

I have a new Links section, which I'll be updating regularly.

I finally figured out what HTML means. (Well, not really, but I did figure out how to add the Twitter button dealie.)

So now, before I go work out to avoid my head flying off my tight neck like the top of a Pez Dispenser, I thought I'd give you something fun to look at. Just a little eye candy.

My New Adult / Mature YA romance, The Story of You and Me, is set in Southern California. There are four young guys who are 'Drivers'. They help out when USCLA students or friends can't drive because they've partied a little too hard. And... sometimes they help out with other problems for other reasons. When last you heard from me I decided to write a short little New Adult novel and publish it in three months.

It does however have a lot of giggles and plenty of romantic moments.

Her name was Paveena and she was in charge of the newly expanded beauty department at the renovated CVS pharmacy in Marina Del Rey, California.

I met her about three years ago when I was sinking under the weight of two mortgages, the second which I acquired after I shattered my arm, had no health insurance, had to pay medical bills and stay afloat.

I asked this short energetic Filippina woman what she'd recommend for an eye creme that wouldn't break the bank.

"No worries. I'll take care of you." Paveena grabbed some creme, patted it around my eyes, pulled out a hand mirror and held it in front of my face. "See? This one fills in lines AND gets rid of dark circles. If you don't like, bring it back. I will exchange it for you. I'll even give you a coupon. In fact, I'll give you two. Wait..." She dug around under the counter. "I can give you three. That means it's half price today. And I'll give you samples: the refreshing toner, the facial peeler, three kinds of moisturizer." She thrust about 50 vials and packets at me. "You will be so happy."

I'd stop in every couple of months, she'd give me a hundred samples, too many coupons and we'd talk. About life and love and work and family. Paveena went home to visit her mom who had ovarian cancer. Then she went home for her mom's funeral. She was stressed, had back pain and asked me how much I'd charge her for chiropractic treatment. I told her she could pay me in samples. But she was too busy to make it over.

I brought my stepmom to see Paveena, who was so thrilled she gave her a free facial on the spot. "I take care of your step-mommy," she said. "Mommies are important."

I was in the midst of selling my house but needed to see Paveena at CVS. This time, she wore a scarf wrapped around her head. She didn't have any hair. Her eyebrows were penciled in. "I have the cancer," she said. "The same kind as my mommy and my grand mother." I asked how I could help. I offered to give her free chiropractic. I went back, again and again, but her friend said she kept calling in sick.

I stopped by CVS today on my way to work. I didn't see Paveena or any other beauty clerk. I walked behind the counter and saw something else: yards and yards of prayers

and condolences, tributes and shout-outs for Paveena, who passed away on Easter, 2013 from ovarian cancer.

She was in her forties.

So this one's for Paveena - a woman with a big heart, the sweetest soul who made the world a much kinder, more beautiful and gentle place for so many people.

You were an angel on earth, Paveena. I hope you're happy with the angels in heaven. May your beautiful soul Rest in Peace. I will always love you.

ABNA 2013 Quarterfinalist - Cupcakes, Pies, and Hot Guys

Squee! My book Cupcakes, Pies, and Hot Guys (Annie Graceland Mystery #3) made the Quarterfinal cut of the ABNA competition. This is very sweet! (Kind of feels like this.)

Pitching your Novel for TV and Movies

I met with an Entertainment Manager this week. He wants to pitch my novel The Messenger (Mortal Beloved, Book 1) for either a TV series or Movie Franchise. Color me happy! And now I'm delving into learning how to create a PITCH PACKAGE for TV and Movie folks.

Let me share a brief history of how this came about before I'm buried in this new writing process.

The Messenger is a passion project for me. I wanted to write an epic love story about two people who would go to the ends of the earth, even travel hundreds of years through time and risk everything to be together.

But getting this book off the ground hasn't been the easiest. I researched the time period - 1675 during King Philip's War (the bloodiest war in American History) in which book one was set.

I wrote the book. (Hahhah, so easy! The words just flew onto the page! Not.)

Here's the rest of my process which might sound familiar to you: Beta Readers' Notes. I edited ms. Professional Editor's Notes. I edited ms. Queried Agents. Rejected. Entered ABNA. Passed 1 round, cut in second. Self-published. Picked wrong book cover. Re-did book cover. Most readers loved the book. A few haters. Did KDP giveaway - over 15,000 downloads. It hit:

Friends and readers believed in me and the book. Even better, a friend's teenage daughter read the book and LOVED IT. They started chatting with friends and acquaintances in the Entertainment Industry. And the daughter pitched The Messenger to the Entertainment Manager while they were playing tennis.

And now he wants to shop it as a movie franchise and hand it to a TV Showrunner. So I am in new territory learning things like putting together a pitch package that has a short overview of the story, a longer synopsis, a page about me that includes info on the book, distinctions, background on my other books, including artwork, as well as a synopsis for Book #2 and Book #3. (We need 5 books to shop the Movie franchise.)

I'm swimming around in unfamiliar waters but I'm going to do learn how to do this, because every new world comes complete with its own learning curve. And remember, there are no guarantees this pitch will go anywhere, but I have to try.
