Benchmarks Assessments Session #2

Reading Benchmark Testing Session #2 will take place on Monday, Nov. 26-30 during Technology sessions for students in grades 3-8. Math Benchmark Testing Session #2 will take place on Monday, Dec. 3-7 during Technology sessions for students in grades 3-8. The purpose of a benchmark test is to get a snapshot of a student's progress, thus giving an accurate predictor of PSSA score if taken today. Teachers can then use the diagnostic information to direct the curriculum to the areas of need.

Family Literacy Night

What is a Family Literacy Night?

Family Literacy Night is when a school gives families and their children a time, a place, and some helpful guidelines from an experienced teacher to write, read, and share their ideas. Its purpose is for individual enjoyment and build a stronger sense of writing as a benefit to the family and to the school community. There are many forms that a FLN can take, but what they all have in common is literacy and public sharing about a given theme.

Typically, a FLN would consist of:

• A welcome/explanation of what the literacy activities

• Everyone interacts within the activities

• Wrap up and reflection time

• Small group sharing

PanAm will host Family Literacy Night on 11/20/2012 from 5-7 PM.

Having entire families together is a powerful demonstration of commitment to the importance of literacy. A Family Literacy Night that allows all of the authors in the room a chance to surprise and enlighten themselves and others will be a memorable event.

Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade

On September 30th our school will participate in the Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. This year, the Parade will celebrate it's 50th year with an inspiring theme: The Puerto Rican Woman. Watch ABC news coverage of the Parade to catch a glimpse of our spectacular float 'Sculpting the Leaders of Tomorrow'. The float will honor female community leaders from the past to the present, & will showcase our Award Winning Ballroom Dance Troupe. Veteran students that have participated in the program have revamp a routine that is sure to please the judges & crowds on Ben Franklin Parkway.

Picture Day with Life Touch National School Studios

Monday,October 1, 2012 LifeTouch Studios will be at Pan American Academy for Picture Day. Students must be dressed in Pan American Academy Charter School School Uniform.

Boys’ Uniform Grades K-5:
Pants
Navy blue pants - school pants must be worn to full length with a plain black belt. (No jeans, slacks, etc)

Shirt
Oxford style short or long sleeve button down shirt (tucked in at all times).

Tie
A solid navy blue tie must be worn along with the oxford style shirt every day.

Sweater Vest
A solid navy blue sweater vest with the Pan American emblem affixed on the left side must be worn over the oxford style shirt.

Socks
Plain navy blue socks are to be worn at all times, even with the physical education uniform.

Shoes
Plain black school shoes are to be worn every day. Sneakers, boots, or athletic shoes are NOT considered as permissible shoes. All-black sneakers are only permitted on days the students have physical education. No colorful sneakers or sneakers with designs or other colors are permitted.

Girls’ Uniform Grades K-5:

Skirt Jumper

Girls are required to wear a specific, green and navy plaid skirt jumper. The jumper should not be shorter than two inches above the knee. No jeans, sweat pants, leggings or pants may be worn under the jumper. In extremely cold weather, girls should wear thick wool tights.

Shirt

A short or long sleeve white shirt with a peter pan collar (round) will be required.

Cardigan Sweater

A solid navy pocket cardigan with the school logo affixed on the left side. In an effort to prevent loss or theft of sweaters, it is recommended that each student write their name on the inside using a permanent marker.

Socks, Tights, and Pantyhose

Plain navy blue knee socks are to be worn. No designs, ruffles, or balls should be visible. Navy blue pantyhose or tights may be worn. Students may not wear pantyhose or tights with any visible designs or seams.

Shoes

Boys' Uniform Grades 6-8:

In addition to the above mentioned boys’ uniform requirements, boys in middle school are required to wear a navy blue sport jacket with the Pan American Academy Charter School Logo. For middle school boys, the sport jacket takes the place of the sweater vest that the younger students wear. Middle school boys will be required to keep their sports jacket on at all times.

Girls' Uniform Grades 6-8:

Girls in middle school are required to wear a navy blue vest with the Pan American Academy Charter School Logo and a blue and green plaid skirt. The skirt may not be worn shorter than two inches above the knee. For middle school girls, the vest takes the place of the cardigan sweater that the younger students wear. Middle school girls will be required to keep their vest on at all times.

Each year Scholastic Book Fairs, in partnership with schools across the country, hosts more than 120,000 book-sale events that give more than 35 million students and their families access to thousands of affordable and educational products, helping foster a lifelong love of reading.

Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Pan American Academy Charter School starting September 17,2012 though September 21, 2012. It will be held on the third floor in the school's Library. In addition, the Scholastic Book Fair will be open during Back to School night on Thursday, September 20, 2012 5-7 PM.

2012 Grade 3 Math Olympics

Students in the third grade participated in the first annual Math Olympics at Pan American Academy Charter School. Students were split up into four teams: Europe in blue, Asia in yellow, Australia in green and the Americas in red. Students engaged in the Opening Ceremony and Parade of Nations; then following the four events. Events included were the Long Jump, Left Hand Sponge Squeeze, Marble Grab, and the Discus Throw. After all of the events, the third graders partook in a water balloon toss. A big special thank you to the teachers who organized this wonderful event Ms. Ospina, Ms. Cajina & Mrs. Martinez. Thanks to Mr. McShain, Mrs. Rufino, and Ms. Thallmayer for supporting these events.

Silver Medal Ballroom Dancing Superstars

Twelve of our fifth grade students did Pan American Academy Charter School proud by earning silver medal status at the ballroom dancing final competition. Congratulations to all the fifth graders who learned so many dances and to Mr. Camacho and Mrs. Breen for leading such an accomplished group of ladies and gentlemen.
