<title>Telecarrier</title>
<description>Reason: Unfriendly business practices

We do not recommend that you use the services of Telecarrier. There are other, equally effective solutions with much friendlier and customer oriented companies, including Cable Onda.

In our case, we had been clients of telecarrier for almost two years.

We asked to be let out of our contract 4 months early, and asked to come to an agreement on paying an early cancelation fee or possibly reducing services for the remaining duration of the contract (4 months).

Telecarrier would not entertain any offers other than full payment for all remaining months on the contract, regardless of whether we would use any of their services or not.

While completely legal, we feel this is a very unfriendly way to treat customers.

To be fair, the bandwidth we received from Telecarrier was good, though it is very expensive. There are many more options available in Panama City for quality, asynchronous bandwidth.

Should you require such services, we highly recommend you shop elsewhere.

<title>E-Vision</title>
<description>E-Vision is my new favorite place to shop for electronics in Panama City. The store I use on Via Espana is fairly small, but they still have a fantastic selection of items available on their excellent web site.

The web site really shines, especially when compared to clunkers like Panafoto.com. These guys seem to get it. Most products have an associated details page, and most products list the prices. The site is easy to navigate and it responds very quickly.

Service seems to be excellent at E-Vision. I walked in looking for a home theater system with wireless rear speakers. I easily found an english speaking sales rep, and he brought another guy over who really knew the various products inside and out. He helped with translations when I had questions that he couldn't answer. Top notch, friendly, and informative.

They were also willing to deal on the prices. I've noticed that in Panama, most stores won't negoatiate much. I was buying a tripod for my Canon DSLR at Sanborn's at MultiPlaza Mall, and they only had the display model of the one I wanted to buy. The little feet on the bottoms of the tripod legs were falling off, there was no packaging, no manual, and the tripod had a couple of minor scratches. They refused to discount the price at all. Needless to say, I walked away. At E-Vision, they readily gave me a 10% cash discount on a brand new, unopened product, and even carried it out to the car for me. They offered to send a guy over to help set it up if I had any problems, at no charge, if I would just tip the guy a little bit.

They care about satisfying their customers, and it really shows.

As I said above, the store is fairly small. However, you can browse on their web site and send an e-mail to the store, and they will have it pulled and ready to take home, assuming they have it in stock. If not, they'll confirm your order and bring it in. The web site doesn't allow building a shopping cart, but the facilities are there and I'm assuming the functionality will be added soon. It would be very nice to be able to see the amount of stock on hand in real time, as I usually prefer to order on line and pick it up later that same day.

If you like to browse products in the store, PanaFoto still stands out as the best place to do it. To be fair, I have not been to E-Vision's other store in Los Pueblos, but I also know that I have no desire to drive that far out of the city.

All in all, E-Vision meets my buying needs, as I generally research products online before making a decision. Once I'm ready, I check the E-Vision web site, and call to place the order. Simple, efficient and quick.

<title>Sky Gilbar Photography</title>
<description>I first met Sky through a mutual friend. As always, the conversation started with the usual "so what are you doing in Panama?". Sky mentioned he was a professional photographer, world traveler, and several other interesting things.

For the moment, I'm going to focus on the photography.

The first thing you should do is visit the web site, SkyGilbar.com. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Take your time as you browse through the many photos on this site. Ok? Get the idea?

Now, get a cup of coffee and check out his other site, the photoblog, Don't Look Now. I like this site far better. The first one is all flash, and while it does it's job of showing the pics, etc, flash to me has a funky, fake feel, and the navigation is painful to me.

Don't Look Now is very straightforward, delivers the pictures quickly, and doesn't get in the way of the experience. Groovy.

The important thing here is that Sky is a fantastic photographer. He has experience in many areas, including Travel, Journalism, Portraits, Fashion, Glamour, and.. well, just about everything. He is a consumate professional, with a very mature and optimistic attitude that only increases his value.

Look at the Nature Photography here - it's amazing how clean the images are, so crisp you feel like you are there, next to the camera.

Portobello Dancer just blows me away.

Action shots? Try the Construction Workers Protest coverage. I think that takes some balls. Those guys were angry, and pretty emotional that day. Sky mentioned on the site:

So because this was an AP assignment, my best stuff goes to them. These are my &amp;ldquo;seconds&amp;rdquo;, but you can get a taste of the chaos from these.

Well, now I want to see those AP photos!

So if you need a world-class, experienced, multilingual photographer, you've just found your man.

<title>Panama Information - Eye on Panama</title>
<description>Eye on Panama's video and articles give people a free guide to Panama that will help anyone looking to travel, plan a vacation, live, work, retire, or just enjoy the beautiful country of Panama.

I enjoy visiting Eye On Panama because they offer really interesting articles and information on what it's like to live here. Other sites give you boring news or someone's idea of interesting stories ('I bought chorizo this morning for $3.00!!'). Eye On Panama has a very creative team of writers and editors, and they really get into the things you should know about Panama.

For instance, I've lived in Panama City for about 2 years now. I found my new favorite steak resturant by reading Eye On Panama's article about Martin Fierro Steakhouse. I never knew the place existed!

With categories including Activism, Activities, Culture, Food, Living, Nightlife, Retirement, Sex (Woohoo!), and Travel, you can be sure Eye on Panama has something you will enjoy.

Look below for the latest articles from Panama Information - Eye On Panama

<title>Furniture CIty</title>
<description>Furniture City has three stores; one in Panama City, one in Costa del Este, and one in David, Chiriqui.

Great deals, large selection, good service.

The Panama City store has two large floors with everything from office furniture to tables and chairs for your terazza.

The web site works fairly well. As with many commercial web sites in Panama, they don't offer prices online. I still can't figure out why this is. Furniture City has great prices, and I'd think they would want you to know that. Another interesting thing is that they require you to register on the site to simply request a price on an item.

Unlike many e-commerce sites in Panama, Furniture City does display a good number of products on the site. For example, there are 4 pages of chairs and recliners. It does not display everything they have, but it's a good sampling, and it's a heck of a lot better that sites like Do-it Center, than generally show 4 items per category.

The web site is in English and Spanish, and the spelling, etc, is very good.

The important thing is that Furniture City offers good furniture at a good price, with minimal hassles and friendly customer service.

<title>Royal Decameron Beach Resort</title>
<description>The Royal Decameron is an all-inclusive beach resort on Panama's Pacific coast, about an hour and a half from Panama City. The Decameron offers 8 big swimming pools, 10 restaurants (2 big buffet style all-inclusive, 8 order off the menu) and 11 bars, including a night club/disco that was an absolute blast! In addition to the bungalows and beachfront rooms, they have a really nice 18-hole golf course and complete business, meeting and convention facilities. There is a lot more that the Royal Decameron has to offer.

I've only been to the Royal Decameron once. I've been trying to find the time to go back! I had a great time and the price was definately right.

We had bungalows that were back by the golf course. They were nice - no complaints except that's it's a heck of a hike to the main resort area, and they golf cart transportation only seems to come around when the drivers get bored. There really didn't seem to be a reliable schedule. I highly recommend making reservations early, and getting into a beach-front room.

The only other negative was that the food and booze was pretty limited. They only offer well drinks - nothing high-end - and the food is, well, food. The buffett tables seem to get filled only once per meal, so get there during the scheduled hours and get yours before the screaming hordes arrive.

The beach is actually really nice! I've heard over and over that the beaches on the Caribbean side are much nicer that on the Pacific side, but you wouldn't really know it based on what I experienced. The sand wasn't perfectly white, but I'm not into being blinded anything. The beach was, however, very clean and well maintained, and the darn thing is big.

I, being a world-class alcoholic (well, I prefer the term 'sport-drinker'), really enjoyed the night club/disco we attended. I'm not much of a dancer, and I'm *really* not much of a latin dancer. I prefer to stand and watch, moving my hips ever so slightly - I'd hate to spill my drink! The crowd somehow found out it was my birthday, and the women in the place would not let me rest! Yeah - it was fun, but it seriously cut into my drinking time. With an open bar, that's a real shame.

Would I recommend the Royal Decameron Resort? Hellz yeah! Just don't be expecting a 5-star, white gloved experience. It's not at all bad - just has a couple slightly rough edges. It's well worth the money.

One last thing. We here at In Panama City are not shy to discuss the ladies of the evening. If you need company, bring your own. There may be a few single girls there on holidays, etc, but it's doubtful you'll find what you want. Prior Planning Precludes Poor Performance. The 5 P's. Never forget that.

<title>New York Bagel Cafe</title>
<description>I love this place. The New York Bagel Cafe (NYBC) is located in Plaza Einstein in the El Cangrejo neighborhood in Panama City, Panama. NYBC offer something like 18 different bagels and as many cream cheese toppings. They always have at least 6 pots of fresh coffee, from French Roast to Altura blend (my favorite).

NYBC also has a full menu of breakfast foods, sandwiches, soups, desserts and more.

But, I go for the bagels. They mix and bake them on-site daily, and as far as I can tell, they are truly authentic jewish-style bagels. My favorite is the plain bagel with plain cream cheese. Go figure. The cinnamon-raisin with the cinnamon cream cheese is a close second.

NYBC has wireless internet, so yo can kick back in one of their big leather couches and browse the web, read emails, and create the appearance that you are in your office working diligently.

The mood is relaxed and casual. Jon, the owner and operator, keeps a great mellow soundtrack running all day long.

Hours of operation are from:
Mon - Fri, 7am-8pm
Sat. 8am-8pm
Sun 8am-3pm

<title>The Panama Canal - El Canal de Panam</title>
<description>The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) web site. Everything you ever wanted to know about the Panama Canal is here.

The site is surprisingly well made, and has a HUGE amount of content, including multimedia. Check out the media section with photos, both current and historical, animations of how everything works, and videos of the canal in operation. The multimedia section also contains a list of all the live cameras - watch the canal operations in real time!

The site also has extensive information on maritime operations, human resources (looking for a job?) and the canal expansion project.

<title>La Bodeguita (the hooker bar)</title>
<description>[no website that I can find]

It's the end of an era. La Bodeguita closed their doors last week. I've heard they were ordered to close, I've heard there was a lien of some kind on their property and equipment, and I've heard that it all relates to the new hotel next door. Bottom line is that La Bodeguita is, at least for now, closed.

La Bodeguita is a landmark in Panama City. Located at the Avenida Balboa end of Calle Uruguay, La Bodeguita (which actually means "the Bodeguita" in Spanish) is a humble looking little beach-bar looking place, with a fake thatch roof and fake bamboo exterior finishing. It's kinda cool, really. Upstairs is a resturant that serves suprisingly good food, and the staff have great attitudes. There's a little balcony out in front of the resturant, and it's great for watching the prostitutes come and go. Yes, La Bodeguita is a hooker bar!

On any given night you can find the place open and cranking out reggeaton, salsa-rock and other latin rythyms. They have live music now and then, with no appreciable scheduling. The bar itself is fairly small, but no ones seems to mind being mashed up together with hookers. Oh yeah - did I mention the working girls?

This is the place to be if you are looking for an escort for the evening. From the moment you walk in, you know what's going on. The ratio of women to men is probably 3 - 1, and these are some smoking hot women! There's more plastic in this place than in a lego factory. Plastic breasts, plastic butts, collagen injected lips, you name it. Scantily clad and dancing their ass** off, the place is simply full of beautiful women.

There's a cover charge at the dor ($10 US if I remember correctly), and they have a great staff of huge bouncers (who are very friendly) waiters (who are very responsive) and bartenders, who.. well.. bartend really well.

La Bodeguita used to be really smoky, and I loved it. Since Panama banned smoking in bars and resturants, the place has lost some of it's charm. Well, for me, anyway. I mean, what could be better than hanging out in a Colombian disco, drinking Atlas and Balboa beer, smoking a nice fat cigar, while getting mashed up against gorgeous Colombian prostitues? Well, taking them home, of course! Prices are varied, as these are all independant girls, so negotiation is recommended. Early in the evening, your scrumptious delight will probably demand $300 for her time. The later it gets, the more he'll drop the number, bottoming out at around $60 for an hour. Of course, if she's into you, you speak spanish, or negotiate like Samuel Jackson and Kevin Spacey (obscure movie reference), you'll get a better deal.

La Bodeguita (which actually means "the hooker bar" in Spanish) is just about the only place open to really party in Panama City on Sunday nights. Yeah, you can go to the casinos, and there are a few local bars open, but nothing that rocks like La Bodeguita (which actually, really, honestly, means "The Little Wine Cellar". See, 'bodega' means (wine) cellar, and 'guita' kinda means little, so there ya go).

<title>The Visitor / El Visitante</title>
<description>Available all over the place in print format, The Visitor is Panama's best local newspaper offering articles in English and Spanish. I love the Isthmian Update section that gives snippets of the news across Panama, and the Events section that shows just about everything that is happening. I like to read it at the New York Bagel Cafe in El Cangejo on Sunday mornings.

<title>United States Embassy Web Site in Panama City, Pan</title>
<description>United States Embassy Web Site in Panama City, Panama.

The American Citizen Services Section assists people with passport renewals, registration of Americans living in Panama, birth reports for children of American citizens born in Panama, voter registration, income tax forms, notarial services, and emergency services to American citizens. Consular officers and staff provide emergency assistance in the event of arrest, destitution, illness or death of an American citizen, and accept trust funds on behalf of Americans in Panama. Consular officers also pass emergency messages to Americans traveling abroad, and make inquiries on the welfare and whereabouts of Americans in Panama when requested by concerned family members.

In 1938 the site in Avenida Balboa was leased from the Government of Panama for 999 years. The chancery building was constructed under the supervision of the Foreign Buildings Office of the Department of State in 1941. The total cost of the land and construction was $366,719. The first diplomatic mission of the United States of America in the Republic of Panama was established in 1904, the year after Panama achieved independence from Colombia (November 3rd, 1903).

The first American Minister was William L. Buchanan of Covington, Ohio. The American Legation was for many years located at the corner of Central Avenue and Fourth Street. It was raised to the status of Embassy in 1939 and moved to its current location on April 2, 1942.

The United States first established a consular office in Panama in 1833 when Panama was a department of Colombia. It became a Consulate General on September 3, 1884 and was combined with the Embassy on April 6, 1942. Earliest available records of the Consulate date from 1910 when the Consulate was located in the Diario de Panama Building near the Presidential Palace. It was then moved to the Marina Building across from the Presidential Palace. It subsequently moved to several other buildings in Panama City.

Since September 2008, the Embassy is located in its new building #783. Demetrio B. Lakas Avenue, Clayton. All offices, including the Consulate, are located in our new embassy compound.

The Embassy comprises seven sections (see below) under the Department of State. In addition, several other U.S. government agencies have offices in Panama, and constitute part of the larger Embassy community.

<title>Presidencia de la Repblica de Panam</title>
<description>Martn Torrijos credentials make him the most qualified politician to govern the Republic of Panama for the next five years. In 1999, he assumed the leadership of the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD), the most powerful political force with over four hundred and eighty thousand members. Since then, the PRD experimented a profound transformation to become the most democratic political organization of our national history. His commitment to legitimize the political activity as the decisive way to produce the social and economic transformations that the country demands shows up his national leadership.

President Martn Torrijos Espino was born in the city of Panama on July 18th, 1963; he is the son of General Omar Torrijos Herrera and Mrs. Xenia Espino. He obtained two titles from Texas A&amp;M University in Political Science and Economics. He stands out as a businessman and economic advisor to international firms on topics such as communications, construction, agricultural exports and maritime industry. He is married to Vivian Fernndez and has three children: Daniela Mara, Martn Omar, and Nicols Antonio.

Martin Torrijos has the charisma of his father, General Omar Torrijos Herrera, a leader who accumulated national and international prestige for his commitment to social issues and because he headed the most noble causes of the Panamanian people. The pinnacle of the General's work is having achieved Panamanian sovereignty over its entire territory and unified the country under the same flag with the fulfillment of the Torrijos-Carter treaty, an heroic deed that concluded with the reversion of the Canal Zone to Panama.

With this legacy, and as a representative of a new generation of Panamanians, Martin Torrijos has set himself out new national goals and objectives. During his preparation period, he accumulated experience as public servant when he held the position of Vice-Minister of Government and Justice under the presidency of Ernesto Perez Balladares. From this position, he carried out a distinguished work in aspects related to national security, civil aerial navigation, public transportation, telecommunications and modernization of the national penitentiary system. The later made him worthy of appreciation by the United Nations organization (UN) and the Government of Spain.

Martin Torrijos was postulated in May 1999 as candidate for the PRD to the presidency of Panama and later, in August of that same year, he was elected as General Secretary of the same political party.

He was reelected for that same position in 2002. Also, he got elected as Vice-president of the Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPAL).

Torrijos political proposal to build a New Motherland under acquired commitments with every sector of the Panamanian society made him win the presidential elections of May 2nd, 2004, with approximately 48% acceptance from the voting public composed by popular, professional and business sectors.

On September 1st, 2004, he was sworn in as President of the Republic of Panama for a period of five years.

The new president of the National Assembly, Mr. Jerry Wilson, put on him the presidential sash. Mr. Samuel Lewis Navarro and Mr. Ruben Arosemena were sworn in as first and second Vice-presidents respectively as well.

Many important leaders attended the take up ceremony, celebrated at the Anayansi Theater of the ATLAPA Convention Center. Among these leaders were the prime minister of Belice, Mr. Said Musa, the President of the Democratic rab Republic Saharaui, Mohamed Abdelaziz; from Colombia, Mr. Alvaro Uribe; Chile, Ricardo Lagos; Ecuador, Lucio Gutirrez; El Salvador, Elas Antonio Saca; the interim president of Hait, Boniface Alexandre; the president of Honduras, Ricardo Maduro; fromTaiwn, Chen Shui-bian; the princesses of Asturias, Felipe de Borbn and Letizia Ortiz, and the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell.

From this day on, the President of Panama, Martin Torrijos Espino, works in the construction of a New Motherland together with his governmental staff and the help of various different economic and social sectors of the country.
